USA Distance Squad Set for World Championships in Daegu

Olympic medalists Bernard Lagat, Shalane Flanagan headline the U.S. contingent in Korea; prize purse exceeds $7 million; TV schedule
By Ryan Lamppa, Running USA wire

Eight reigning world champions will lead Team USA at the 2011 IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Daegu, Korea, August 27 to September 4. On the roster are a total of 19 World Championships medalists and 16 Olympic medalists. The IAAF World Championships are the third biggest global sporting event after the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup, and the 13th edition will be the largest sports gathering on the planet in 2011.

More than 2,000 athletes from 200-plus national teams, 10,500 officials and volunteers, 4,000 media representatives, 500,000 spectators and an $80 million economic impact are expected at the host city, Daegu, which is located in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula and has a population of approximately 2.5 million. In addition, more than $7 million in prize money will be awarded including $100,000 for a world record.

The Team USA distance squad is led by multi-World Championship medalist Bernard Lagat and 2008 Olympic 10,000m bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan. In 2009 Berlin, Lagat, 36, earned bronze and silver medals in the 1500m and 5000m respectively. In Daegu, the two-time Olympic medalist will run the 5000m, while Flanagan, 30, will contest her specialty the 10,000 meters.

The marathon course starts and finishes at the historic Gukchae-bosang Memorial Park in downtown Daegu and features two 15K loops followed by a final 12.195K lap (most of the previous 15K loop). The 26.2 mile course passes by some of the most scenic and famous Daegu attractions including Suseong Lake (twice).

At the most recent 2009 World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Team USA won a total of 22 medals, well ahead of runner-up Jamaica (13). Of the 22 medals, 10 of them were gold for Team USA, which was also ahead of second place Jamaica (7). At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan, Team USA tied its own record from 2005 by winning a total of 14 gold medals and equaled the best ever for total medals won by an American team with 26.

Below is the U.S. distance team for the Worlds with racing schedules and U.S. medal(s) or best finish at the global championship:

WMM contenders Gebremariam, Kiplagat lead respective fields in Daegu, Korea

As the top track and field athletes from around the world arrive in Daegu, Korea for the IAAF World Championships, marathon runners will compete for World Marathon Majors points in addition to gold, silver and bronze medals. In the men's race, Ethiopia's Gebre Gebremariam, the 2010 ING New York City Marathon champion and third place 2011 Boston Marathon finisher, currently tied for fourth on the leader board with 35 points, would propel himself into the series lead with a World Championship victory. Gebremariam's countrymen Feyisa Lilesa and Bazu Worku, with 10 points apiece, are also poised to climb the series standings with top five finishes in Daegu.

The Kenyan national team features defending world champion Abel Kirui and fellow WMM point-scorer Vincent Kipruto.

Kiplagat will be joined on the start line by her Kenyan teammates Sharon Cherop and Caroline Rotich, the third and fourth place 2011 Boston Marathon finishers.

The Ethiopian squad will be led by Bezunesh Bekele and Aberu Kebede, tied for fourth on the leader board with 25 points apiece. Additionally, Ethiopia's Aselefech Mergia, the 2009 World Championship bronze medalist, and Atsede Baysa could vastly improve their WMM rankings with top finishes at the World Championships.

The 2010-11 WMM series will conclude with the fall series races - the BMW Berlin Marathon on September 25, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 9, and the ING New York City Marathon November 6.

Mack to Defend USA 10K Trail Title

Continental Divide Trail Race again to host off-road national championship; up-and-down challenging course has 1,500 feet of climbing

LAUREL SPRINGS, N.C. - (August 24, 2011) - The Continental Divide Trail Race, on Saturday, August 27, will once again host the USA 10K Trail Championships. With 1,500 feet of climbing and some highly technical sections, some have described it as the hardest race they've ever run, with two big climbs, both ¼ mile with 18.5% and 22+% averages, plus no less than 9 difficult climbs.

The men's field looks strong and ready for the national trail tilt. Bobby Mack, 26, will return to defend his crown. The Raleigh, N.C. resident has already won the USA 8K road championship this year; can he match it with a trail title repeat? Ryan Woods is also back, trying to improve on his runner-up finishes the last two years. Ryan and Jared Scott have been racing against each other since February in the La Sportiva Mountain Cup series; Jared beat Ryan at two races, but Ryan beat Jared when he met him on his home turf in North Carolina. Jared accumulated enough points to come out as the winner of the series. Both are on the 2011 U.S. Mountain Team to compete in Albania. Other men to watch are Joe Moore and Timothy Sykes.

For the Masters men (40 and older), Chris Wiley and Dave Dunham should place high, plus rumor has it that Tim Van Orden is returning to defend his Masters crown from 2010.

On the women's side, Maria Dalzot is coming to Laurel Springs for the first time. She recently competed for the USA and won the NACAC Mountain Championship against some tough competition. Molly Nunn also returns, following her second place finish last year. She is currently ranked high in the 2011 NC USATF Long Distance Series. Tara Mooney, Alicia Parr and Alison Bryant should also be in the mix.

The national championship will also be competitive in the age group categories. These runners race for age group titles in five year increments from 40 and above. Joyce Hodges-Hite, age 74, is back for her third run up, down and around the mountain. There are also Team Championship titles being contested in both Open and Masters divisions.

The NC USATF Association welcomes everyone who is traveling out to the picturesque mountains. The race site, 75 miles northeast of Winston-Salem, sits on the brim of the Blue Ridge Mountains, right along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The race starts and finishes right on the Eastern Continental Divide with the course sending runners on loops off both sides of the divide. Go to www.continentaldividetrailrace.com for more information.

U.S. Marines Repeat MCM Event Series Wins at RunStock 5K

More than 500 participants enjoy evening musical run on Quantico

QUANTICO, Va. - (August 20, 2011) - While savoring an evening filled with peace, love, music and especially running, two local Marines who have won two previous MCM Events this year, made it a close finish at the RunStock 5K on Marine Corps Base Quantico on Saturday.

Maj. Jason Kut, 33, of Quantico led 504 finishers running RunStock's 3.1 mile course in 17 minutes, 53 seconds. Kut also was the lead finisher of the Run Amuck Mud Run held on Quantico June 11, where he completed the four-mile course in 23:09.

Closing in on Kut's heels at RunStock was runner-up Cpl. Craig Clark, 25, a Marine Corps finance clerk, who finished in 18:20. Clark also was the winner of the Irish Sprint 10K held on Quantico on March 26, completing the race in 35:20. In addition, Clark was the top active duty military finisher at the 2010 Marine Corps Historic Half marathon in Fredericksburg, VA, completing that event in 1:20:27. Marine Maj. Billy Ramsey, 41, husband of an MCM staffer, finished third male in 18:43.

Finishing first among RunStock 5K women was Sarah Byers, 41, of Chino Hills, CA, who ran the course in 22:47. Byers, a veteran of 10 marathons, was vacationing with her husband in Washington, DC and seeking a local run.

"I was glad to find RunStock," Byers said. "It was a beautiful course and actually harder than I thought, but a good challenge."

Finishing second among women was Yuko Whitestone, 39, of Springfield, VA, who ran 23:18, while Andrea Laizer, 26, of Alexandria, VA finished as the third lead woman in 23:22.

Participants of all ages completed RunStock's musical course that included five live bands, Mix 107.3 radio, DJ Manny and headliner the School of Rock, which ignited the crowd of runners and spectators at the finish on Quantico's Butler Stadium.
