Stanford Sweeps The Jim Heuval Twilight Invitational

Reno, Nev. - The Stanford cross country teams got the season underway Friday night under the lights by sweeping both races in a rare night cross country meet. Both teams took the Jim Heuval Twilight Invitational title raced at Shadow Mountain Park.

The women were led by Alexandra Gits [SR Edina, MN (Edina)], who took the individual title with a 4,000-meter time of 14:54. The Cardinal scored just 27 points to easily outdistance UC Riverside who had 45. Stanford ran only five runners in both races, leaving most of its top runners behind at Lake Tahoe where the annual preseason training camp is taking place this year.

Other top-5 performances for the women came from Georgia Griffin [JR Norwich, VT (Hanover)] and Madeline Duhon [RS JR Wassenaar, The Netherlands (The American School of the Hague)]. Griffin was fourth in 15:26, while Duhon was fifth in 15:39. Victoria Pennings [RS SO Warwick, NY (Warwick)]finished just behind her teammates in sixth with a time of 15:52. Rounding out the five was Emilie Amaro [RS SO Cooper City, FL (Cypress Bay)], who placed 15th with a time of 16:37. Amaro is returning from a redshirt season last year with an injury after having an outstanding freshman season.

On the men's side, the Cardinal squeaked out the victory with 34 points, while second-place UC Riverside had 37. The No. 1 team in the country ran nowhere near its top team, but still managed to win the meet.

All-America steeplechaser, J.T. Sullivan [RS JR Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (Trabuco Hills)] led the men with his second-place finish. He covered the 20:04. Also running well was a pair of redshirt freshmen, making their debuts in cross country. Tyler Stutzman [RS FR Charlottesville, VA (Western Albermarle)] and Andrew Berberick [RS FR Littleton, CO (Mullen)] placed third and fourth overall in 20:09 and 20:21, respectively.

Rounding out the Stanford team were Tyler Valdes [RS FR San Juan Capistrano, CA (Dana Hills)] who placed 10th in 20:49 and Dylan Ferris who was 15th in 21:51.

The Cardinal will now head back to Lake Tahoe for the completion of the preseason training camp. The first time Stanford will race full teams will be at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 25.
