INDIANAPOLIS - Molly Huddle has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after breaking the American record in the women's 5,000m Friday at the Belgacom Memorial van Damme, the final meeting of the Samsung Diamond League in Brussels, Belgium.
The 2010 USA Outdoor runner-up, Huddle took .04 seconds off Shalane Flanagan's previous American record when she finished tenth in Brussels in 14:44.76. Her time is also an Area and NACAC record. Huddle has now taken over 30 seconds off the 15:17 lifetime best she had heading into the 2010 outdoor season.
Now in its ninth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
