POLL NOTES: Middlebury’s women takes over the nation’s top spot this week, returning for the first time since being voted the unanimous number one on September 23, 2009. Last year, the Panthers of Middlebury, Vt., placed fourth at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. Middlebury has won a total of five NCAA Division III team championships in cross country, each of which have been won since 2000 and the last being in 2008 … Pollsters have been impressed by Middlebury’s consistency throughout the season. Last weekend, the Panthers were the winners at Williams College’s Purple Valley Invitational. This weekend, they host the Vermont Intercollegiate Championships.

Women’s No. 6 UW Oshkosh took a big leap, up 15 spots from last week’s pirch at No. 21. The Titans scored big wins in taking top honors at last weekend’s Griak Invtiational in the Maroon III Division. Oshkosh (65) knocked off then-No. 1 UW Eau Claire (89) and then-No. 11 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (115) to make voters take notice.

On the men’s side, Augustana (Ill.) gained 14 spots this week, landing at No. 14, after taking second at their home Brissman/Lundeen Invitational. The Vikings (55) finished behind then-No. 17 UW Stevens Point (23), but ahead of then-No. 14 UW Whitewater (88) and then-No. 16 Grinnell.
