Returning heptathlon champions highlight Day 2 of Youth Champs

LISLE, Ill. - Day Two of the 2010 USA Youth Outdoor Championships featured more exciting performances in relay and multi events at The Sports Complex on the campus of Benedictine University.



Multis



Returning heptathlon champions Kanellar Carney (Continental T-Belle, Madison, Tenn.) and Kendall Gustafson (Together Elite, Los Angeles, Calif.) completed the second half of their two-day multi events with repeat wins. Carney won the Young Women's event with 4,356 points and Gustafson took the title with 4,494.



Erwin Jones (Phoenix Bobcats, Phoenix, Ariz.), improved on his third-place finish at the 2009 Youth Championships, to win the Young Men's Decathlon with 5,768 points while George Wayda (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) pulled ahead on the second day to win the Intermediate Boys with a score of 5,247. Jewell Bolden (Wichita, Kan.) and Kellon Taylor (Track Express, Hyattsville, Md.) won the Midget Girls (2,702) and Boys (2,258) pentathlons, and Kalyah Williams (Long Beach Sprinters, Lakewood, Calif.) and Jaiden Woodbey (Speed City Track Club, Fontana, Calif.) finished first in the Bantam Girls (1,157) and Boys (855) triathlons.



Relays



Several 4 x 800m relay teams turned in top performances today with several of the races decided in the last hundred meters. The midget boys' Peak Performance team (Omaha, Neb.) of Kupre Mitchell, Da Shawn McGary, Cedrick Smith- Henderson and Michael Knowles battled back and forth with Miami Northwest Express and finished just a few seconds ahead with a time of 10:20.72.



Track Houston took two relay titles today in the Youth (8:50.36) and Intermediate (8:17.85) Boys' relays, and the Jenks America (Jenks, Okla.) Intermediate Girls' team of Abby Hoover, Regan Ward, Jordan King and Madison Brown was also victorious after holding off Motor City to win in 9:23.50. The Young Women's team of Samantha Levin, Landon Wachter, Colleen Riley and Natalie Pattin from St. Louis Lightning denied Track Houston their third relay win today when they won a close race with 9:16.66 over Track Houston's 9:17.74.
