This weekend in Palo Alto

Hello Everyone,

I received your names from Ernie Lee as running fans in the Palo Alto area connected to the high school running scene through your respective websites. As I’m sure you all know there are some great races on tap at the Cardinal invite this weekend, several of which have Nike athletes shooting for American Records; namely in the men’s 10k and women’s 5k. If one of the records does fall, we’ll be hosting the record-breaker at the new Nike store in Palo Alto (located at 680 Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto CA) for a reception Sunday morning at 9:30 where they will be available for questions and autographs.

Regardless of whether any records are broken, there will be a group run leaving the store at 8:30 with some post-run refreshments. Feel free to let your constituents know about what will hopefully be a great opportunity for them to meet a new American Record Holder.

I’ll send out another email following the races to confirm any events that might be taking place on Sunday. I know it’s short notice today – not to mention a confirmation tomorrow night, so I thank you for any support you can lend.

Let me know if you have any questions and thank you very much.

Wright named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - University of Tennessee senior Phoebe Wright has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after running on three winning relays last week at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.

A two-time NCAA Distance Medley Relay (DMR) champion, Wright ran third-leg on the DMR and anchored the 4x800 and 4x1500 to help UT's women win the distance triple at the Penn Relays for the second straight season.

On Thursday, Wright's 800m leg of the DMR put Tennessee into the lead with a 2:02.12 clocking that was four seconds faster than any other runner. They finished in 10:54.65 and won by more than eight seconds. On Friday, she anchored the 4x1500m to a winning 17:14.91, splitting 4:17.3 in the process. And on Saturday, she anchored the 4x800m to glory in 8:18.22, running the fastest women's 800m split in Penn Relays history, covering her two laps in 2:00.89.

Now in its ninth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

Phoebe Wright named Athlete of the Week

Yap High School in the Federated States of Micronesia needs visual track materials

Duncan MacSwain, former track and cross country coach at Terra Linda
High School in San Rafael, Marin County, has been consulting with the Department of Education and the high school in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia.

The high school track program, which operates without a budget, is
in desperate need of visual materials for the jumps, the discus and
the javelin. YouTube.com immediately comes to mind as a source, but it's not
available in Yap.

If anyone has extra DVDs or tapes that are no longer being used and
which cover these events, and/or any additional events, please contact
Duncan at: Dmacs1@comcast.net.

There is an immediate need for these materials, as the Yap High
School program is preparing athletes for the Micronesia High School
meet, which will be held in Palau this coming August.

Keith Conning: If you are watching "The Pacific" series on HBO you will be interested to know that:

"in World War II, Japanese-held Yap was one of the islands bypassed in the U.S. "island-hopping" strategy, although it was regularly bombed by U.S. ships and aircraft, and Yap-based Japanese bombers did some damage in return."

Olympians Kruger, Kia Davis Highlight New Additions to Division II Athlete Hall of Fame

Six will be honored with ceremony to be held a month from today

April 26, 2010

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday that the Association will induct six new members to their Division II Track & Field Athlete Hall of Fame. Christopher Coleman, Kia Davis, Meredith Davis, Janet Kogo, A.G. Kruger, and Petra Juraskova will be honored with an induction ceremony to be held Wednesday, May 26, in Charlotte, N.C., site of the upcoming NCAA Division II Championships.

Christopher Coleman, Saint Augustine’s

Coleman was a three-time NCAA triple jump champion, capturing back-to-back indoor titles in 1994 and 1995 and an outdoor title in 1995. Coleman earned All-America honors 14 times with the jumps in the span between 1992 and 1995 and was a member of six national championship teams at Saint Augustine’s. Coleman was the founder and is the coach of the Carolina All-Stars Youth Track & Field Team in North Carolina.

Kia Davis, Saint Augustine’s

A six-time Division II national champion, Kia Davis specialized in the 200- and 400-meter events. At the 2001 national outdoor championships, Davis won titles in the 200 meters and with the Falcons’ 4x100-meter relay team. Davis, originally of Raleigh, N.C., was named the CIAA’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2001 after claiming conference crowns in four events. Davis was a 2008 Olympian in the 200 and 400 for Liberia and a World Championship 400-meter participant in 2009. Davis holds Liberian national records in six events which includes her 400-meter personal best of 51.55.

Meredith Davis, Morningside College

The 2001 and 2002 USTFCCCA National Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Davis won NCAA Division II heptathlon titles in both of those years. Originally from Sioux City, Iowa, Davis was also a two-time national runner-up in the long jump and earned a total of 15 All-America certificates. In total, Davis was a 13-time North Central Conference Champion and was responsible for school records in 13 events. In 2002, Davis finished fifth at the USATF Championships in the heptathlon, and, in 2004, Davis participated in the USATF Olympic Trials in the event.

Janet Kogo, Harding

Kogo won three NCAA titles in the 2005 track & field seasons which included a 5000-, 10,000-meter double win at the outdoor national championships in Abilene, Texas. At the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships, Kogo set a then-championships 5000-meter record with a winning time of 16:19.59 and was later named the USTFCCCA Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year for Division II. Kogo, a six-time All-American across all seasons, was also two-time NCAA region champion in cross country. Kogo was a two-time Gulf South Champion, a two-time Academic All-Gulf South honoree, set seven school records, and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

A.G. Kruger, Morningside College

Kruger, originally from Sioux City, Iowa, was the NCAA Division II Champion in the hammer throw in 2001 and North Central Conference Champion in the hammer and discus. Kruger is most widely known for his post-collegiate success, having notched appearances in two Olympic Games and three World Championships. Kruger was the 2008 Olympic Trials champion and has won the hammer at four USATF Championships. In addition, Kruger has won five USATF Indoor Championships with the weight.

Petra Juraskova, Cal State LA

Juraskova, a five-time NCAA Division II Champion, twice swept shot put national titles in both indoor and outdoor seasons, adding a discus crown in 1997. Juraskova was named the CCAA Female Athlete of the Year in 1996 and 1997, becoming the first to win the conference award two years in a row and the second to win it more than once. A 2009 Cal State LA Hall of Fame inductee, Juraskova ranks in the all-time national Division II top 10 in the shot put and discus, claiming collegiate personal bests of 52-0 (15.85m) and 179-9 (54.78m), respectively.

USATF Foundation awards grant to USATF Youth Hammer Throw Development Program

INDIANAPOLIS - The USA Track & Field Foundation has awarded a grant to the USATF Youth Hammer Throw Development Program, Chairman Bob Greifeld and Executive Director Tom Jackovic announced Monday. The program is spearheaded by Harold Connolly, a four-time Olympian, 1956 Olympic gold medalist, former world record holder and National Track & Field Hall of Famer.

The award of $7,500 per year for four years will support training grants for up-and-coming 13-17 year old youths, and could also be used to defray travel and room and board costs at a one-week camp for top male and female throwers.

The Hammer Development program had perhaps its greatest moment when in 2008 Walter Henning and Conor McCullough won gold and silver at the World Junior Championships. Both athletes had been involved in the program since they were 13 years old.

"Harold has combined coaching hammer throwers in his hometown with disseminating his knowledge of the event at national throws coaches clinics and youth throwers camps," said Foundation Director Paul Lilly. "His hands-on coaching skills, his reputation and even his authoritative DVD all have helped advance hammer throwing in the U.S."

"I appreciate greatly the USATF Foundation's approval of our grant application for the continuing development of American youth hammer throwing," said Connolly. "The Foundation's approval is an affirmation of the dedicated volunteer efforts of Bob Gourley and Bonnie Edmondson, my indispensable colleagues in this venture, and an increasing legion of other dedicated volunteers across the country advocating, supporting and giving personal time for the advancement of youth hammer throwing."

Ken Flax, two-time Olympic hammer thrower and Foundation Director, is also pleased with the progress of the initiative. "When you introduce young athletes to the hammer throw in their early teens and you add the passion, experience and knowledge of a coach like Harold Connolly, you have the recipe for success on the world level."

Inquiries regarding the USATF Youth Hammer Throw Development Program may be directed to Harold Connolly at connollyharold@gmail.com.

The USATF Foundation provides a means to attract and guide funds to new and innovative track and field programs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for youth athletes, emerging elite athletes, distance training centers and anti-doping education. Each year, the Foundation awards more than half a million dollars in grants and other support. The Foundation depends upon donations from its Board of Directors and from generous fans of track & field.

YEAH BABY! NCAA'S WILL BE ROCKING AT VILLARD ST. PUB!

All,
You didn't think I forgot about you Did You?? Well, as you may have expected, Bob Jensen and I have been doing some pretty serious Fun Planning for the VSP over the past few months and I wanted to let you know what the hell is going on June 8th-12th at the Villard! Bob (VSP owner) wanted me to first mention how much he appreciates those of you who have stopped by and had a meal or a beverage when you visited Eugene over the past few months. Many of you have mentioned to me that you have made the VSP your "place to go" when you are in town. It is very much appreciated!

Now on to the Festivities:

a. We will be doing a Scaled Back Vendor area (6-8 booths) so if you, or anyone wants to participate please e-mail me back. I have 4 left @ $300. TAFNEWS (Track & Field News), T-Roller (a deep tissue massage tool), and Mt SAC relays are on board!

b. There will be a Hootie Run on Sat Morning

c. Food & Drink specials for the entire Meet, working on some Special Track Themed Mugs for you...

d. Working with Runnerspace to set up Athlete Interview area again since so many of them hang out at the Pub (after their events of course!)

With your help (you using your mailing lists) and us using our pervasive, VS Athletics coaches lists, we will begin getting the messages out to potential attendees. I will be contacting the Oregon State HS Coaches Association through Dave Frank (hear that Frankie?). Ed Fox at TAFNEWS has already said he will put a Heavy Mention in the NCAA Issue, so the "Bible" is on Board! Haven't heard from Eder....
Bob is also working on some cool arrangements with local suppliers to Help Coaches with their thirst and hunger before & after the Meet. Just let me say, that being on the Restaurant, Bar and Hotel Association Board does not hurt these efforts! More on developments as things progress. And, yes, wooden tokens from the Trials and USATF's have been "grandfathered in" for acceptance at the NCAA's!

Well, now you know....more later!

I Hope to See All of You in Eugene June 9-12!

Take Care....

Keith Conning: I have enjoyed stopping by after the meet. You will meet a lot of coaches, both young and old like me. Peanut is the cross country and track coach at El Dorado High School in Placerville. He is a graduate of John Swett High School in Crockett, California, which is near the C&H Sugar Factory on the Carquinez Strait.

"Peanut Harms sports an impressive superstar resume, competing for the Aggies racing team, and having been a longtime track coach, including once being a coach for the Nigerian Olympic team and for the U.S. track team. He is a member of the UC Davis Athletic Hall of Fame. Peanut Harms and the Aggies reserve a special place in San Francisco running history for introducing centipede racing (13 runners linked by nylon banner) to Bay to Breakers in 1978."

Mother knows best for Laguna Creek sprinter Batson

Statement from USATF CEO Doug Logan on LaShawn Merritt's admission to the presence of the banned substance DHEA in an anti-doping sample:

"We understand that Mr. Merritt's case is still ongoing with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, and USATF awaits USADA's decision on the case. Any professional athlete in this sport knows that they are solely responsible for anything that goes into their bodies. For Mr. Merritt to claim inadvertent use of a banned substance due to the ingestion of over-the-counter supplements brings shame to himself and his teammates. Thanks to his selfish actions, he has done damage to our efforts to fight the plague of performance-enhancing drugs in our sport.

"Mr. Merritt has been an integral part of Team USA and the sport in this country. He has now put his entire career under a cloud and in the process made himself the object of jokes. In this day and age, a professional athlete should know better. Personally, I am disgusted by this entire episode."

Johnson and Powell Promoted to Associate Head Track & Field Coaches

Johnson and Powell Promoted to Associate Head Track & Field Coaches
Courtesy: GoDucks.com
Release: 04/21/2010

EUGENE, Ore. -- Veteran assistants Robert Johnson and Andy Powell have been promoted to associate head coaches for the Oregon track and field programs, Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna announced Wednesday. Effective immediately, Johnson assumes the role of associate head coach of women’s track and field and Powell becomes associate head coach of men’s track and field/men’s and women’s cross country.

"Since their arrival on the University of Oregon campus, Robert and Andy have played pivotal roles in the success of our program," said Lananna. "With their promotion, I’m confident that both our men’s and women’s teams will have the day-to-day guidance necessary to remain among the NCAA’s best. They are outstanding coaches with a keen understanding of what makes the University of Oregon and Track Town, USA special. They have been outstanding facilitators of the U of O vision and I enthusiastically look forward to working with them in these enhanced roles."

In their new roles, Johnson and Powell will be responsible for managing the daily operation of the women’s and men’s track and field teams, respectively. They are charged with developing and managing the plans necessary for achieving the program’s athletic success, including oversight of the teams’ athletic preparation and competition strategies, the recruitment of high-caliber student-athletes, and administrative tasks that support the program’s athletic goals.

"I feel extremely honored and blessed that Vin has chosen to promote me to this position," said Johnson. "With the help from a great staff, the program has come a long way and we want to continue to make the University of Oregon relevant in the sport of track and field."

Recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as both the 2010 National Indoor Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2009 National Outdoor Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year, Johnson is in his fifth year at Oregon and concentrates his coaching on sprints, hurdles, relays, long jump, and triple jump. At the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, athletes under Johnson’s guidance contributed 23 team points to the Ducks’ first-ever capture of the NCAA women’s team title.

Led by Pac-10 champions and All-Americans Keshia Baker and Jamesha Youngblood, the women’s team broke 12 indoor and outdoor school records in 2009 in the sprints, relays and vertical jumps and captured three Pac-10 individual titles along the way. The 2009 season saw the Ducks win the Pac-10 championship and finish as NCAA runners-up. School records have continued to fall in 2010 with indoor marks at 60, 200 and 400 meters broken, as well as the school’s 4x400 and distance medley relays and the long jump records. Outdoors in 2010, the 4x100 relay record has already fallen again.

Johnson is a 1996 graduate of Appalachian State, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1996, and was a two-time triple jump All-American (1995, ’96), NCAA high jump qualifier (1996) and school high jump record holder (7-1 3/4). He capped his career as the 1996 Southern Conference triple jump and high jump champion, and was named the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year after he piled up All-Southern Conference honors in the long jump, triple jump, high jump, 200 meters and 4x100 meter relay.

Working in concert with Lananna, Powell has helped guide Oregon to four of the last five Pac-10 titles in track and field and three of the league’s last four cross country crowns. The Ducks have also brought home three NCAA championships during Powell’s tenure, including back-to-back NCAA Men’s Cross Country titles in 2007 and 2008, as well as the 2009 NCAA Men’s Indoor Track and Field crown.

"I am honored to assume this new responsibility," said Powell. "Vin has articulated a bold vision for our program, and I’m confident that together with Robert Johnson and our talented staff we will continue to achieve greatness."

Powell will continue his coaching of the UO men’s distance programs.

Oregon’s distance and middle distance runners have won eight individual and relay NCAA titles combined in the last five years. The distance group, which included 2009 Boweman Award winner Galen Rupp, has produced 10 Pac-10 titles and 41 All-America awards the last five years. The Ducks feature the defending NCAA 800 meter outdoor champion in Andrew Wheating and have won back-to-back indoor distance medley relay crowns for the first time in school history.

As a Stanford athlete, Powell stood out as one of the nation’s top middle distance runners. He still ranks among the school’s all-time best in the 1,500 meters (3:40.65) and was a member of the Cardinal’s 2000 NCAA championship team. As a prep at Oliver Ames High School in North Easton, Mass., near Boston, he won U.S. junior titles as a senior in the 1,500 meters (3:49.81) and 5,000 meters (14:51.81).

His wife Maurica Powell is also a Duck assistant coach and was a decorated Stanford middle distance runner and All-American. The two have one son, Owen.

Penn Relays will honor Ralph Metcalfe, XU champions

April 19, 2010

NEW ORLEANS — Ralph Metcalfe was serving his country in World War II when Xavier University of Louisiana made history at the 1942 Penn Relays Carnival. This weekend the former Xavier coach and the relay team he assembled will be honored at the 116th running of the United States' oldest annual track and field event.
This is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Metcalfe, known as the "World's Fastest Human" in the early 1930s and a four-time Olympic medalist before coaching Xavier's men's track and field teams from the fall of 1936 through December 1941.
Metcalfe resigned from Xavier and joined the U.S. Army soon after the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Giles Wright, an XU assistant coach, replaced Metcalfe, and the relay team Metcalfe recruited — sophomores Herbert Douglas, William Morton and Clarence Doak and senior Howard Mitchell — didn't miss a step. That quartet's time of 41.7 seconds in the 440-yard relay made Xavier the first HBCU (historically black college or university) to win a relay at the Penn Relays.
Metcalfe died in 1978 at age 68 after being elected four times to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat from Illinois' first congressional district. Douglas — the only surviving member of the relay team and a member of the Board of the Friends of the Penn Relays — Xavier President Dr. Norman C. Francis and Metcalfe's son, Ralph Metcalfe Jr., will be at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Saturday for a ceremony to honor the '42 XU relay team and the Metcalfe Centennial.

According to a Penn Relays news release, "The Metcalfe Centennial will be celebrated on Relays Saturday, at 1:25 p.m. (EDT) during the running of the 4x100-meter Relay Championship of America. This stop on the Metcalfe Centennial is sponsored by Joe Cosgrove and Pentec Health, Inc."

--------------------------

Keith Conning: Ralph Metcalfe placed second in the 100 meters in 10.3 at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He tied the Olympic Record as Thomas "Eddie" Tolan won in 10.3.

Team USA prepares for Lightning

Team USA prepares for Lightning

PHILADELPHIA - A storm is brewing in Philadelphia. The world's fastest man, Usain Bolt, will lead Team Jamaica into Franklin Field on Saturday, April 24, and look to give them just their second win in 11 years in the men's 4x100m at the 11th edition of USA vs. the World at the 114th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.

With 12 nations set to compete, including Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, Team USA is out to reclaim their stake as the dominant relay force Saturday during the first event of the 2010 USATF Outdoor Visa Championship Series. USA vs. The World at the Penn Relays will be broadcast on April 24 on ESPN2 from 8-10 p.m. Eastern Time.

Events at this year's USA vs. the World include the Nike men's 4x100m, the Visa women's 4x100m, the Visa men's 4x400m, the Nike women's 4x400m, the men's distance medley relay and the women's sprint medley relay. Other countries set to compete include Australia, Bahamas, Canada, Dominican Republic, Great Britain, Germany, Kenya, Morocco and Russia.

Will lightning strike?

All eyes will be on Team Jamaica and the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt. The world record holder at 100 & 200m will combine with some of Jamaica's best sprint talent to try and break Team USA's stranglehold on the 4x100m title at USA vs. The World. Bolt leads a talented international field that includes the 2008 Olympic and 2009 World Outdoor Championships gold and silver medal winning teams from Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Each team will bring the men who comprised the second, third and anchor legs of these medal winning teams. Jamaica's relay pool also includes former world record holder and two-time World Outdoor 100m bronze medalist Asafa Powell and Michael Frater. Trinidad and Tobago's team will feature Richard Thompson, Marc Burns and Emmanuel Callender.

Team USA's relay pool for the Nike men's 4x100m is led by three-time Olympic medalist Shawn Crawford, 2008 Olympic 100m and 200m bronze medalist Walter Dix, 2004 Olympic 4x100m gold medalist and two-time World Outdoor gold medalist Darvis Patton, and reigning USA Indoor and Outdoor champion and 2010 World Indoor silver medalist Mike Rodgers.

On the women's side, two-time World Outdoor bronze medalist Carmelita Jeter leads Team USA's lineup in the Visa 4x100m. Jeter ended her 2009 campaign world-ranked #1 over 100m by Track & Field News (T&FN) after becoming the second-fastest woman in history and posting the fastest time over 100m in 12 years. Joining Jeter in the pool is three-time World 200m champion Allyson Felix and local favorites Lisa and Miki Barber. Lisa is the 2006 World Indoor champion and 2005 World Outdoor 4x100m gold medalist and Miki was part of the gold-medal winning 4x100m at the 2007 World Outdoor Championships.

They will be faced with the Jamaican contingent that includes reigning Olympic and World Outdoor 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser and Beijing 100m bronze medalist and Berlin silver medalist Kerron Stewart, along with Simone Facey, who was part of the gold-medal winning 4x100 with Fraser and Stewart in Berlin.

Powerful 4x400m lineups
