Editorial notebook: American rebirth from dark times

I read this editorial in the Sacramento Bee this morning. It is well worth your time.

The benefits we appreciate today rest on the shoulders of generations that came before. That reality has appeared broken lately because of the "winner-take-all" and "get-all-I-can" approach of individuals, the financial system and the national government. Hawken said it's time to rebuild a society that's meaningful and places value on the idea that people would want to live their lives for the benefit not just of themselves and their families but for others they don't know and never will meet.
