Cal Sets 11 Provisional and 1 Automatic Qualifiers, 6 School Indoor Records at MPSF Championships

Turner, Patterson, Carey, Coe, Greggor and the men’s DMR run for Cal indoor records!

Feb. 28, 2009

SEATTLE - California set eleven NCAA provisional qualifying times or marks as well as six indoor school records on Saturday at the MPSF Indoor Championships at Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility, where the Golden Bears men finished tied for second placed and the Cal women placed sixth in the overall team standings. Over the two-day conference meet, Cal recorded one NCAA automatic qualifier - by the men's distance medley relay - and 11 provisional qualifiers along with six school indoor school records. The Men’s Distance Medley Relay broke the meet record set last year by Stanford. The Bears also won five events at the MPSF Indoor Championships.

The Cal men compiled 78.50 points to tie for second with Washington State at MPSFs. UCLA (83.50) won the men's team title. The Bears women collected 68.50 points, with Stanford (115) taking the women's crown. The Cal men's finish tied their second-place finish from 2008, while the women wound up two spots behind last year's fourth-place finish.

Cal's men's DMR, consisting of junior Mark Matusak, senior Jake Hanson, freshman Sebastian Sam and sophomore Michael Coe, ran a winning time of 9:29.71 on Friday to set an overall school and meet record and automatically qualify for the national meet. On Saturday, two Bears clocked NCAA provisional qualifiers in winning their events: Senior Ed Wright, who won the men's high jump with a mark of 2.21 meters (7-3.00), and senior Mackenzie Pierce, who won the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.45.

Also on Saturday, Coe won the men's one-mile run with a provisional-qualifying and breaking David Torrence’s school indoor record with a time of 4:00.29. Senior Kellan Patterson won the men's 60-meter dash with a school indoor record time of 6.77 breaking Darren Wood’s 2005 record. Patterson time was three hundredths of a second off an NCAA provisional-qualifying time.

Coe became the fifth-fastest Bear in the men's one-mile run, while senior Mark Matusak became the fourth-fastest Cal runner in the men's 3000-meter run with a fifth-place and lifetime-best time of 8:01.77. One of the Bears Matusak trails on Cal's all-time 3000 list is Coe, who set a school and all-time record of 7:48.05 in that event in the Husky Classic on Feb. 14.

"Matusak did a great job coming back in that race," Cal head coach Tony Sandoval said. "With Coe, things are really coming together for him. He had a great fall. The maturity is starting to kick in, and right now he's one of the hottest runners in the country."

Senior Sean Carey placed third in the men's 800-meter run with a Cal indoor record and provisional-qualifying time of 1:49.65. Carey broke Alex McClary’s 800 meters record set in 2007 MPSF final. Cal senior Inika McPherson posted a provisional-qualifying mark of 1.82 meters (5-11.50) in taking second in the women's high jump.

Three more Bears posted NCAA provisional qualifiers at MPSFs on Saturday: Senior Brook Turner, whose second-place time of 54.31 in the women's 400-meter dash broke Alysia Johnson’s Cal indoor record; sophomore Cherrelle Garrett, who clocked a provisional qualifying time of 7.38 to tie for second place in the women's 60-meter dash; and Sam, who ran a provisional-qualifying 1:49.86 to take fourth in the men's 800.

On Friday, the Bears also hit NCAA provisional qualifiers in the women's 60-meter dash preliminaries, with Garrett taking second and tying her season-best time of 7.34; in the women's 5000-meter run, with sophomore Alison Greggor running a Cal indoor record 16:30.56 to place fourth; and in the women's pole vault, with sophomore Allison Stokke posting a mark of 4.00 meters (13-1.50) to tie for seventh place. Greggor also set the school record in the 3,000 (9:36.26) two weeks ago at the Husky Inv.

Even with all the qualifiers and indoor records Cal set on the final day of the meet, Sandoval lauded his athletes' team effort on Saturday.

"Certainly that was what we were looking for, more than anything else - a team effort to get points," he said. "We were tied for first going into the pole vault, and we got close together today. The provisional marks were just an added bonus for us.

"After the first day, I told them, `There's a lot of the track meet left to be completed. We had ebbs and flows but stay positive. You've got to keep working.'"

Cal is back in action when it hosts a quad meet with Stanford, Fresno State and UC Davis on Saturday, March 7, at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. The NCAA Indoor Championships are schedule for Friday – Saturday at College Station, Texas. Final accepted entries will be posted by the NCAA on Monday March 9.
