LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The California cross country teams finished competition at the prestigious NCAA Pre-National Invitational at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park with good looks at how the team stacks up against the best programs in the country heading into the final weeks of the season.
The Golden Bear men finished seventh as a team with 300 points with top 50 finishes from Chris Walden and John Lawson. Colorado won the men’s team title with 89 points, followed by Oregon and Arkansas. The individual winner was Thomas Curtin of Virginia Tech.
The Cal women finished 11th out of 45 teams with 461 points with freshman Marissa Williams standing out with a time of 20.27.1 to place 17th individually. Michigan won the women’s team title with 131 points, followed by Colorado and Oregon. The individual winner was Erin Clark of Colorado with a time of 20:00.5.
Williams had a great second showing for the Cal women this season in claiming 17th individually out of a total of 311 runners from the best cross country programs in the nation. Williams was the second-fastest freshman at the meet and came just 27 seconds shy of taking the individual champion honors.
Transfer Georgia Bell competed for the first time this year and crossed the line 56th overall at 20:52.1. Mariel Mendoz (21:13.9), Jordyn Colter (21:14.4) and Megan Bordes (21:32.7) also scored for the Bears at the meet.
On the men’s side, Walden and Lawson came within two seconds of each other to earn their top 50 finishes. Walden was 42nd at 23:51.9, and Lawson was 45th at 23:53.8. Leland Later, Trent Brendel and Robert Brandt also scored for the Cal men at the meet.
The Golden Bears are off next week before competing at the Pac-12 Championships in Colfax, Wash., on October 30.
