NEW ORLEANS – The final significant weekend of head-to-head NCAA Division II cross country action before conference championships two weekends from now fittingly resulted in some significant shifting in the Regional Rankings announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Regional Rankings Summary PDF | Division II XC Rankings Central
Week-by-Week All-Time Regional Rankings
QUICK LINKS: Men’s Regions | Women’s Regions
Two new No. 1 teams emerged in the South Region for each gender, while rankings in the South, East, Atlantic, and Central regions were jumbled up from a week ago. The time to live up to these rankings is fast approaching as Regional Championships will be held around the country on November 7.
The men of Lee (Tenn.) reclaimed their spot atop the South Region from Saint Leo after a third-place finish among non-Division I schools at the Queens Royals XC Challenge. Nova Southeastern jumped up two spots into the all-important third spot in the three-bid South Region.
Only three teams from the men’s South Region will advance to the NCAA Championships on November 21 in Joplin, Missouri. Each region is allotted a certain number of qualifiers based on its teams’ performances at last year’s NCAA Championships.
Fret not, Saint Leo fans, as your Lions ascended to No. 1 in the women’s South Region. The Saint Leo women toppled formerly No. 1 Tampa – winner of the last eight South Region titles – 83-89 at the 5K Disney Classic Presented by New Balance. The Spartans fell to No. 2 in the region.
The South may have been the only region with changes at the very top, but numerous other regions saw new teams jockey into qualifying position based on the weekend’s results.
In the men’s East Region, only top-ranked Stonehill remained steady while all nine teams beneath it shuffled around. American International moved back to No. 2 in the three-bid region, displacing No. 3 Roberts Wesleyan and No. 4 Franklin Pierce.
The three-bid women’s Atlantic saw Shippensburg move to No. 2 behind Bloomsburg, pushing down Edinboro and Slippery Rock.
A five-spot drop to No. 9 by MSU Moorhead in the five-bid women’s Central Region opened the door for No. 4 Harding to move up one spot and No. 5 Missouri Southern to join the qualifying picture with a two-position increase.
Many teams took advantage of this final weekend of significant regular-season competition to move into the regional rankings.
New to the men’s charts were: Minnesota Duluth [Central], Michigan Tech [Midwest], North Alabama [South], and Young Harris and Flagler [Southeast].
Joining the women’s rankings were: Philadelphia [East], Nova Southeastern [South], Augusta, Limestone and Mount Olive [Southeast], and Cal State San Marcos [West].
NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held around the country on Saturday, November 7 with the NCAA Championships happening two weeks later in Joplin, Missouri, on November 21..
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams’ strength with current season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
