BERKELEY, Calif. – The California Golden Bears on their first day of competition at the Brutus Hamilton Open at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley on Friday. Redshirt senior Scott Esparza set a new personal best in the hammer, placing second with a throw of 211-9. That mark moves him into a tie for third on Cal’s All-Time Performers List with Derek White, who set the same mark last year. The Bears saw two PR’s in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase, as sophomore Megan Bordes improved her time by three seconds, and remains sixth on the All-Time Performers List with a time of 10:43.40, while freshman Elizabeth Flatley clocked a time of 11:21.24, moving from tenth to ninth on the same list.
Several Bears had personal bests on day one of the Brutus Hamilton Open. Freshman Ellis Newton placed second in the men’s 1500-meters, improving on his personal best time by nearly four seconds, clocking a mark of 3:51.04 on Friday. In the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Yohaness Estifanos posted a new PR, finishing third with a time of 9:11.29. Sophomore Nijae Jones also PR’ed on Friday, notching a time of 55.62 in her second place finish in the women’s 400-meters. Sophomore Christine Canning won the women’s high jump with a new personal best mark of 5-8.75, improving on her previous best of 5-7.00 which was set earlier this season. To close the evening, sophomore Khala Taylor also recorded a PR in the javelin, with a throw of 119-11.
The Brutus Hamilton Challenge gets underway Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the women’s Upshaw Family Long Jump, the women’s shot put, the women’s pole vault and the women’s high jump.
