Up next, the Sun Devils travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31.
QuotesDirector of Track and Field Greg Kraft“Obviously it was an outstanding team competition. Texas A&M provided a wonderful event for ourselves, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech. From a team standpoint, it was a great learning experience for us. This was the first time this year we tried to collectively put the team together with our distance runners. On the women’s side, the start of the meet was Shelby Houlihan. She and Adriana Olivas both had outstanding performances in the 3000m. Olivas was wire to wire with the two young ladies from Texas A&M and that bodes very well nationally. Payton Schutte started her season off with a win in the mile, while Alex Hartig did very well in both her events in the throws. On the men’s side, we had a variety of performances, especially from our newcomer in the throws, Ahmed Hassan, who demonstrated great composure considering he has so recently joined the program all the way from Egypt.”
Assistant Coach Louie Quintana“Obviously the women’s 3000m was a great effort. The plan was to come here and run 36-second 200s, and Shelby accomplished that, and it’s apparently a national dual or quad meet record, which is huge. Obviously it’s a very good start. I also think that Adriana (Olivas) has run the 10th fastest time in ASU history, it’s just a great opener, and it really leads me to believe she’s got a great 5k in her over the next month, which we will see at the Husky meet.
“The guys obviously were great. That 3000m CJ ran was a real balanced race, it was smart, a personal best, was competitive, trying to go for the win for the team. And Herson did what Herson does. He goes to the front, the middle, runs 2:38 in the middle 1000m, which I think affected his finish over the last three laps, but he was still competitive and raced well. It’s a great opener for him, even off the pace where guys aren’t running in the seven-minute range. Both CJ and Ryan are very valuable runners to this program.”
Redshirt Sophomore Distance Runner CJ Albertson
“I had a good opener today, got third, a new personal best. I’m feeling like I’m in pretty good shape right now, would have liked to have pushed a little harder for this race, but it was a good test for me today to see where I’m at.
Senior Distance Runner Shelby Houlihan“I felt really good today, ran a PR by two seconds at 9:03. It felt really easy, I ran consistently with 36s through every lap. It was good to get out there and open up fast, have more confidence going into where I am in training right now.
