Lewis-Smallwood sets new American discus mark
Illini alum wins DecaNation title

Aug. 30, 2014

VALENCE, France – Former Illinois women’s track & field standout Gia Lewis-Smallwood (1998-01) set a new American record in the discus at the French-sanctioned DecaNation meet on Saturday.

The Champaign, Illinois native won the event with a throw of 69.17 meters (226’ 11”), besting the field by over six meters. Lewis-Smallwood’s toss surpasses the previous American record of 67.74 meters, set by Stephanie Brown-Trafton in the spring of 2012.

“It’s really remarkable what she has been able to do,” commented events coach Mike Turk. “It’s really a testament to her work ethic and the support she has from her family and the community.”

Lewis-Smallwood, the two-time defending champion in the women’s discus at the USATF Outdoor National Championships, had a previous personal best of 67.59 meters set at the Glasgow Diamond League earlier this year.

Lewis-Smallwood, who finished second in the IAAF Diamond League standings, will next compete at the Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco on September 13-14.

STANFORD OPENS CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

Cardinal second and third at USF Invite

SAN FRANCISCO – Stanford’s top-five ranked cross country teams opened the season at the USF Invitational in low-key fashion, earning the women’s team victory and finishing second among the men.

The Cardinal took a measured approach to the meet, which began and ended at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park, concentrating on team running and achieving certain splits, rather than going all-out. In addition, many of the Cardinal’s top runners rested.

The results reflected Stanford’s approach. The Cardinal’s top five women finished as a pack, in third through seventh, to score 25 points to runner-up Cal’s 52. Vanessa Fraser was the top Cardinal finisher, running 18:02.4 over the 5K course (3.1 miles). The Stanford women are No. 4 in the USTFCCCA coaches’ rankings.

The top five Stanford men finished together, in fourth through eighth, scoring 30 points to first-place Cal’s 25. The Golden Bears took the first three places, with Garrett Sweatt heading the Stanford pack in fourth, running 25:26.4 over the 8K course (4.97 miles). The Cardinal men are ranked No. 5.

The meet signaled the collegiate cross country debuts for several sophomores who redshirted as freshmen -- Fraser and Emma Fisher for the women; and Jack Keelan, Sam Wharton, Tom Coyle and Patrick Gibson for the men. Keelan and Wharton were second and third at the U.S. junior national championships earlier this year. No true freshmen competed for Stanford on Saturday.

The team reported Thursday, raced Saturday, and leaves Sunday for a high-altitude training camp at Mammoth Lakes, Calif. (elevation 7,880 feet), on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada range, through Sept. 19. The fall quarter begins Sept. 22.

Andrew Bumbalough (born March 14, 1987) is a middle/long distance runner for the United States. After graduating from Georgetown University,[1] Bumbalough went to train in Oregon with Coach Schumacher and fellow athletes Tim Nelson, Matt Tegenkamp, Evan Jager and Chris Solinsky.[2] Bumbalough finished fourth in the 5000m at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships behind Bernard Lagat, Galen Rupp and teammate Chris Solinsky. Even early in his career, Andrew Bumbalough has posted times that rank him with elite distance runners in American history.

While running for Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee,[1] Bumbalough set men's state records in track and cross country, including the 3200 meter run in 2004 (8:46.47)[3] and the 1600 meter run in 2005 (4:05.75).[3]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Bumbalough

Richie Boulet, a man of honor and fame

by Bill Taylor, the coach of Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo

special report

DRAKE CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER CHOSEN FOR MARIN "HALL OF FAME"

It was learned yesterday that one Richie Boulet will be inducted into the Marin "Hall of Fame" in November. He will be the fourth Drake cross country runner to be so honored. Boulet's recognition is for both cross country and track. Athletes and coaches are not usually considered until twenty years after their senior high school season. Boulet graduated from Drake in 1991.

Richie made it to the state finals twice in cross country, twice in track. In 1990 it looked like he was going to win division II/III cross country final with 200 yards to go, but two competitors made it by him by the chute. I said something like, "he kicked too soon". A Stanford "Olympic" coach said to me, "you can always smooth out the kick."

When a junior on the track, Richie was down to around 4:20 for the mile when we went over to Hayward for a NCS regional meet. In the field was a 4:13 miler, ranked 13th in the nation by time. I was told when I arrived that some of the East Bay coaches had placed some "bets" on the mile. Richie was told told to strike at 300 yard. The "4:13 miler" casually led the way after three laps. Then precisely with 300 yards to go, Boulet turned on the jets and ran away from the entire field. This was the break out race in the young life of Richie Boulet.

What track fans know him by today is his 3:53.26 mile in Oregon in 1997. Two Kenyans led the way in the "Prefontaine Classic", running about 1:52 at he half mile. Richie was last, or close to last. But he kept moving up, up, up and placed third behind the Kenyans. All of the best U.S. milers were in the field. He also reached a 1:48.90 time over 800m in a European meet one summer, qualified by times for the World Indoor and Outdoor meets, and ran 13:32 or so over 5000 meters.

Olympics? When he up-ed his mileage, and went high for altitude, hip and Achilles trouble resulted. In the immediate years before the Olympic trials, Boulet would have very likely made the U.S. team. But the "excessive" mileage cost him dearly. I have a picture of him which he doesn't like. He is down, on hands and knees, after missing making the U.S. Olympic team in 2000. Boulet always gave fully of himself. He was a rare one.

Bill Taylor

Today? Richie owns two running shoe companies in East Bay, is married to U.S. Olympic marathoner, 2004, Magda Louey Boulet. And has an 8 year old son called, Owen.

I ordered two new pairs of shoes from him yesterday.

The Warm-Up Lap: Cross Country 2014 is Here – Info to Get You Started

NEW ORLEANS—Knowing you aren’t the best is hard. In my job, I know it; I just read Spencer Hall’s annual college football preseason essay, and I know that is the best thing anyone will write before a college fall sport starts.
If you’re a 15:30 or 14:30 or even, in this era, a 13:30 5k man, you know it too. The gorgeous Matrix that is TFRRS makes sure you know exactly where you stand, for better or worse. The surety of that knowledge is ridiculous: in 2014, if you were a Division I woman with a very respectable 4:35 1500 PR, you know you didn’t crack the nation’s top 500 times listed in the database.
In a sport that’s been mostly bleached of any messy subjectivity, cross country remains wonderfully untamed and unknowable.
Today is opening day of cross country season for Divisions I and III, and it is a stone cold lock that in some 4k or 6k in some corner of the country, a callow harrier will lead a national contender for hundreds or even thousands of meters before staggering to an exceedingly painful finish. Because he or she just didn’t know.
Track & field is spectacular, but you can’t help knowing. “What’s his split?!”, the eternal refrain of the track fan or coach. No one cares about splits in cross country. It’s pretty difficult to know them accurately, or at least to observe them in real time. Speed ratings, polls, and past times remain pretty unhelpful in predicting races held on grass in the future, and that’s a beautiful blind spot.
Cherish the one tiny slice of the running calendar left for Not-Knowing.
Some bookmarks you should index as the season starts today:
Here’s everything you need to know about NCAA championships qualifying criteria.
While all three divisions have slightly different processes for picking their national qualifiers, all use regional championships. Regional championship central gives you dates, locations, and history for every region in every division.
You don’t have to be a coach or sports information director to nominate an athlete for the National Athlete of the Week award. Every Monday at 4:00 PM eastern time, the USTFCCCA recognizes the top male and female performers from all three NCAA divisions, so get those nominations in by Mondays at noon eastern. (Next week, you have an extra day to nominate athletes)
Every Friday morning, check Infozone for a list of the weekend’s biggest meets, and every Monday morning (or Sunday if you’re so inclined) check TFRRS XC for results from across the country
The Regional Team Rankings and National Coaches Polls will come out every week here.
Preseason National Coaches Polls

Speaking of the polls, the preseason poll for DI and DIII dropped this week; the NAIA put out their own rankings, and we’ll have DII next week. DII is a week behind because their national championship is two weeks later than the other two divisions. You DII fans can slake your thirst for now with Kyle’s individual previews for men and women.
DIVISION I PRESEASON – 2014
MEN WOMEN
1. Colorado 1. Michigan
2. Northern Arizona 2. Oregon
3. Oregon 3. Florida State
4. Oklahoma State 4. Stanford
5. Stanford 5. Georgetown
6. Indiana 6. Michigan State
7. Portland 7. Arkansas
8. Syracuse 8. Colorado
9. BYU 9. Iowa State
10. Villanova 10. Virginia
Division I
The men’s pollsters mostly preserved last November’s status quo. Defending champ Colorado is a unanimous preseason No. 1, and the top four teams in the poll (the Buffs are joined by Northern Arizona, Oregon, and Oklahoma State) all finished in the top five at NCAAs last year.
The women’s poll, topped by Michigan, is much more anarchic. Defending champ Providence tumbled to No. 18 and 2013 runner-up Arizona wasn’t even among the 41 teams to receive a single point. Five different teams (Michigan, Oregon, Stanford, Georgetown, and Arkansas) got at least one first-place-vote, and the Wolverines won a plurality to come out with their first No. 1 ranking ever.

DIVISION III PRESEASON – 2014
MEN WOMEN
1. St. Olaf 1. Johns Hopkins
2. North Central (Ill.) 2. Williams
3. Williams 3. Middlebury
4. UW-Eau Claire 4. Chicago
5. Central (Iowa) 5. Oberlin
6. MIT 6. MIT
7. Johns Hopkins t7. Calvin
8. UW-La Crosse t7. Willamette
9. UW-Platteville 9. NYU
10. Washington (Mo.) 10. SUNY Geneseo
Division III
Johns Hopkins received all twelve first-place votes in the women’s poll. Though Hopkins loses three of its top six from last year’s team, the Jays have earned the benefit of the doubt after winning the last two national titles in blowout fashion. They’re trailed in the poll by No. 2 Williams and No. 3 Middlebury, which combined to win eight of 11 national titles from 2000-10.
On the men’s side, St. Olaf receives its first-ever No. 1 ranking after winning its first-ever national title last year. The Oles received two more first-place votes than No.2 North Central (Ill.), which has been the first or second place team at NCAAs 29 out of the last 40 years.

NAIA PRESEASON – 2014
MEN WOMEN
1. Oklahoma City 1. Biola (Calif.)
2. Southern Oregon 2. Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)
3. Olivet Nazarene 3. Dordt (Iowa)
4. Aquinas (Mich.) 4. Olivet Nazarene
5. St. Francis (Ill.) 5. Northwest Christian (Ore.)
6. British Columbia 6. Carrol (Mont.)
7. Shawnee State (Ohio) 7. Taylor (Ind.)
8. Concordia (Ore.) 8. Shawnee State (Ohio)
9. Cal State San Marcos 9. St. Francis (Ill.)
10. Tennessee Wesleyan 10. The Master’s (Calif.)
NAIA
The Oklahoma City men start at No. 1 after winning the national title a year ago; the only thing that got between the Stars and a unanimous top ranking was one coach casting a first-place vote for No. 2 Southern Oregon.
After taking third at nats last fall, Biola ascends to the top spot in the women’s poll. The Eagles are followed by No. 2 Lewis-Clark State and No. 3 Dordt (Iowa).

Winchester & Martin Lead a Talented Young Group of DII Women’s XC Returners

By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA
August 28, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – With the past two individual Division II women’s cross country champions having exhausted their eligibility in 2013-14, the door is now open for freshman phenoms from each of the past three years to stake their claim to the spotlight.
Jennifer Agnew of U-Mary, who won the XC crown a year ago but didn’t have any remaining track eligibility, and Alicia Nelson of Adams State, who didn’t have any remaining XC time after winning in 2012 but dominated the distance events during track in 2014, have now both taken their final bows and exited stage left.
Adams State senior Lauren Martin – understudy to Nelson in Alamosa, Colorado – now leads a cast of women who have all experienced success at the highest level ever since their first years as collegians.

20 – All-Americans Returning
60 – Top-100 Finishers Returning
(Based on listed 2013 eligibility)
A two-time cross country All-American and two-time 2014 track champ, Martin is still the comparative "late bloomer" next to the rest of the top five returners – all because she wasn’t an All-American in her first collegiate season.
Top returner senior Allyson Winchester of Grand Valley State, No. 3 returner sophomore Breanna Hemming of Metro State, No. 4 returner sophomore Samantha Rivard of Minnesota-Duluth and No. 5 junior Jessica Janecke of GVSU have all earned All-America honors each and every time they competed the weekend before Thanksgiving.
The youth of the top five returners is microcosmic of the larger youth movement among the 20 returning All-Americans, as 11 of them are only sophomores or juniors this year.
While the youth permeates the returning slate of runners, there’s no replacing the veteran experience the top two returners Winchester and Martin have in abundance.
Winchester especially has thrived in the fall, returning as the only three-time All-American in the country. She went from 22nd her freshman year all the way to sixth in 2012 and third a year ago, leading the Lakers to their second national title in a row and their third in the past four years.
Her road to the top-three finish wasn’t always the smoothest – just one other time was she the top runner for GVSU in 2013, although that could be more of a testament to the depth of a team that returns six top-50 finishers from last year – but when it counted most she came up clutch.
She held her composure in the front of the chase group that was consistently more than 10 seconds behind Agnew, and ended up with the fifth-fastest second half of the race.
Her regular-season track campaign was low-key compared to those of her returners, but she was able to come up clutch again to finish third at 5000 meters on her home track at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in a career-best 16:36.39.
The No. 2 returner Martin, however, followed up her breakthrough cross country campaign – from 72nd as a frosh to 38th in 2012 to sixth last fall – with an even bigger track season. The Grizzly, guided by her father Damon, the legendary ASU coach, won not one but two national titles at 5000 meters indoors and 10,000 meters outdoors, and finished as an All-American outdoors at 5000 meters and indoors at 3000.
For as close as the distances are between the 6k cross country championships and the indoor 5000 meters, relatively few women have been able to translate their indoor 5000 titles to cross country crowns the following fall. Neely Spence of Shippensburg and Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific did it in 2010 and 2009, respectively, but you have to go all the way back to Kasia Arient of Lewis in 1997 to find the only other woman who has done the indoor 5000/XC double in that order.
Outdoor 10,000-meter champions have even less frequently doubled back to win in the fall, with Arient in 1997 being the last to have achieved the outdoor 10k/XC double in the same calendar year after Tumaini Urio of rival Western State in 1995 and Christie Allen of Pittsburg State in 1992.
Martin would join Arient as the only women to win the indoor 5000, outdoor 10,000 and cross country titles in the same calendar year.
As Martin and Winchester are the standard-bearers for the senior class, so Hemming and Rivard appear to be for the future of Division II distance running. As freshmen a year ago, Hemming was seventh overall to Rivard’s eighth-place showing with just over a second separating the two. Their rivalry extended to the track, producing perhaps the year’s biggest "thrill of victory, agony of defeat" moment as Rivard claimed the indoor mile national title after Hemming – leading at the time – tripped on the final straight.
Hemming was particularly impressive in her NCAA Cross Country Championships debut, running the second half of the race faster than all but five other women and moving up 10 spots from her position at the 3k split. That jump was the second-biggest of any top-10 finisher, bested only by the 12-spot jump by Bentley’s fourth-place Tara Dooley, who will most likely redshirt the 2014 campaign after finishing fourth as a junior (per her coach).
She then went on to finish eighth in that devestating indoor national mile final and sixth outdoors at 1500 meters.
Rivard‘s trajectory to her exceptional XC finish was the inverse of Hemming’s, as she ran the slowest second half of the race of any top-12 finisher but managed to end up holding at No. 8 from the 3000-meter split to the finish.
Not to worry, because she blossomed into one of the Division’s rangiest championship runners on the track during the winter and spring. Not only did she win that indoor mile, but at the same meet she finished third at 3000 meters, and then was the national runner-up outdoors at 5000 meters and the 10th-place finisher over 10,000 meters.
Only one other woman has ever parlayed an indoor mile title into a DII cross country crown: Seattle Pacific’s Pixler in 2007, 2008 and 2009. After winning the indoor mile as a freshman, Pixler would win the next three cross titles. Could Rivard follow that trend?
Rounding out the top five returners is Winchester’s GVSU teammate Janecke. Now a junior, Janecke was even more impressive as a frosh than either Hemming or Rivard, finishing fourth in her NCAA XC debut in 2012. She notched another top-10 showing last year with a ninth-place finish as the second of four GVSU runners in the top 20.
Three times she was an All-American on the track in 2014, finishing third on her home track over 10,000 meters outdoors and notching two indoor All-America accolades at 5000 and 3000 meters with fourth and seventh-place showings, respectively.
Others to keep an eye on:
Julie Pack, Western State – Ninth as a freshman in 2013 and 35th in 2013, she largely missed the 2014 track campaign
Mara O’Brien, Adams State – 15th as a redshirt freshman, runner-up in the indoor mile
Emily Short, Saginaw Valley State – Two-time All-American, 18th in 2013 and 20th in 2013
Jessica Young, Winona State – Two-time All-American, 28th in 2013 and 35th in 2012
Hannah Osborn, GVSU – Two-time All-American, 31st in 2013 and 26th in 2012, and a fifth-place finisher indoors at 3000 meters

Loaded Field of Returners Set to Vie for Division II Individual Men’s XC Crown

NEW ORLEANS – Looking for the most hotly contested individual title race of the 2014 cross country season? You might want to give the Division II men a shot.
Five of the top 12 returners from last year’s NCAA Championships race in Spokane, Washington, are back at it again in 2014 – and they’re more highly credentialed than ever.
Defending individual XC champ senior Tabor Stevens of Adams State – also the two-time defending DII steeplechase champion – is just the tip of the iceberg. Standing an imposing 6-5, he is head-and-shoulders above the field in stature only, despite his impressive resume. Just take a look at the group who’s chasing him.
Along with junior Mike Biwott of American International (fourth in 2013), senior Aaron Dinzeo of California (Pa.) (fifth), junior Johnnie Guy of Southern Indiana (ninth) and junior Kevin Batt of Adams State (12th), those five combined last year for four national track titles, three runner-ups and three more third-place showings.
Here are their top-five accomplishments since departing Spokane:
Tabor Stevens NCAA steeplechase champ (defended)
Outdoor 5000 meters – runner-up
Indoor 3000 meters – 3rd
Mike Biwott Outdoor 10,000 meters – runner-up
Aaron Dinzeo Outdoor 10,000 meters – 3rd
Outdoor 5000 meters – 5th
Johnnie Guy Outdoor 10,000 meters champ
Outdoor 5000 meters – 3rd
Indoor 5000 meters – 4th
Kevin Batt Indoor 5000 meters champ
Outdoor 5000 meters champ

As last year’s top runner for the national championship team at Adams State – the winners of five of the last six national team titles – there is no shortage of pressure on Stevens from individual, team and program legacy perspectives. But he does have the unique opportunity to become the most decorated cross country runner in school history should he repeat as national champion – a feat, remarkably, none of the other four ASU men’s XC champs ever achieved.
His 11 second victory over last year’s runner-up Vegard Olstad of Western State – who has since transferred to Oklahoma State – after coming through the midpoint of the race in fourth was a brilliant display of the strength that has made him among the best DII steeplechasers in history. He very nearly negative split the race, 14:54 and 14:56, while most other runners experienced a double-digit drop-off from the first half of the race to the second.
The Grizzly – who was also the indoor mile champ in 2013 – would be the 10th man in Division II history to repeat as the king of cross country, and the first since Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian won his fourth in a row in 2007. Incidentally, it was Stevens who smashed Naimadu’s former Division II Championships steeplechase record of 8:36.84 this past spring with an 8:35.05 of his own.
Obviously "Tabor Flav" is already a proven XC winner, but historically speaking, Stevens is in the minority of DII steeple champions who also won a national XC title later that year. Only three other men have done that: Reuben Mwei of Adams State in 2009; Naimadu in 2005, ’06 and ’07; Samson Obwocha of Texas A&M-Commerce in 1985; and Mike Vanatta of Southeast Missouri State in 1984.
Returner Spotlight:
Johnnie Guy, Southern Indiana

Q: How’s your summer training been going getting ready for this cross country season?
A: I’ve probably had my best summer ever for running. I’ve been working a lot, so I’ve been really busy and it’s kind of hard to get the mileage in, but I’ve managed to train pretty hard. I’m doing the most mileage I’ve ever done, and I feel stronger than I ever have coming into a cross country season, so I’m pretty excited.
Q: What impact has your first national title – a 10,000 meters crown outdoors this spring – had on your outlook approaching your junior XC campaign?
A: I think it’s huge, honestly. It’s a big confidence booster knowing I won a national title last spring, knowing I can run with anybody out there right now. I got a lot of experience winning a race like that. I know what works best for me, when I need to make moves in the middle of races. But cross country is a little bit tougher because everyone is in the same race instead of splitting up into all the different distances.
It will be more challenging, but I definitely think I put a big target on my back, too. I think I was kind of under the radar this track season. No one really knew who I was until I won, and now everyone’s going to be looking at me. It’s another thing I’ve got to watch out for. I don’t think anyone’s going to be messing around now. If I take the lead, people are going to go because they know I’m going to try to go for it.
Q: What are your expectations for yourself and your team this year?
A: My goal is to win nationals. I think that’s definitely reasonable, but it’s also the goal for 10-15 runners around the country and it’s definitely reasonable for them, too. I know it’s not going to be easy, but I also just want to put myself in position to give our team the best opportunity to score as high as we can. We have a great group of guys right now, and we have a couple of guys graduating next year so we’re really looking to finish strong this year.
Historically, the winners of the outdoor 5000- and 10,000-meter races at NCAAs have had much more success carrying over their momentum to the fall – good news for Stevens’ roommate Batt and Southern Indiana’s Guy (see the sidebar interview with him here), respectively.
Nine men have won the 5000 meters outdoor title and proceeded to claim the individual XC crown in the fall a combined 12 times – most recently Micah Chelimo of Alaska Anchorage in 2012 – while eight men have pulled the 10,000 meters/cross country double a combined 11 times (some double track champs may overlap).
Batt, the reigning indoor and outdoor 5k champ and a sub-4 miler indoors for the all-time DII record, is also the only active DII man who’s been able to beat Stevens head-to-head. Though he is the No. 5 returner this year after a 12th-place showing in 2013, the Australian who competes internationally for Ireland was the national cross country runner-up in 2012 by a tenth of a second over Stevens in 2012 and last fall was runner-up ahead of Stevens’ third at Roy Griak.
On the track, Batt topped Stevens in both of the national championships in which they both competed: the indoor 3000 and the outdoor 5000.
Guy had a breakthrough outdoors to win the national 10,000 meters crown, surging late in the race to defeat Biwott of American International – the No. 2 returner from last fall – while also finishing third at 5000 meters behind Batt and Stevens. As such, he now knows he is a man with a target on his back for this upcoming fall, especially when combined with the fact that his ninth-place finish a year ago makes him the No. 4 returner.
His display of strength in the closing stages of the outdoor 10,000 meters race this spring bodes well for the Screaming Eagle junior. While he held steady in last fall’s race at ninth place from the midpoint split to the finish line, 26 of the 40 All-Americans ran the second half of the race faster than Guy.
Plus, Guy has some pressure to kindle a winning streak by twins at the Division II cross country championships: last year’s women’s winner Jennifer Agnew of U-Mary was also a twin. Johnnie’s brother, Josh, also runs for USI and was 51st a year ago.
While Stevens didn’t even win a meet prior to winning the whole shebang in Spokane – although an impressive third in the DI race at Roy Griak certainly counts for something – American International’s diminutive Biwott was perhaps the Division’s most prolific runner during the regular season. He registered five wins – plus a runner-up showing in the DI race at Paul Short – before finishing fourth at NCAAs.
Biwott led the way through much of the early stages of last fall’s championship race, crossing the 5-kilometer halfway point in the lead with 10 other guys within four seconds before slipping back to fourth. He cooled off a bit during the track season, with a runner-up showing to Guy of Southern Indiana at 10,000 meters outdoors highlighting a campaign that also included seventh-place national showings at 5000 meters both indoors and outdoors.
The No. 3 returner from a year ago, Dinzeo of California (Pa.) may not have had an indoor track season, but he was able to effectively carry the momentum of his fifth-place finish at XC nationals – up from 20th in 2011 before missing the 2012 championships – into the spring.
In just his second outdoor meet, he finished fourth at 10,000 meters in the Stanford Invitational against largely Division I and pro competition in 28:40 for the 12th-best time in DII history, before going on to ultimately finish third at the DII championships in that event. He was also fifth at 5000 meters.
A non-exhaustive list of others to keep an eye on:
Matt Daniels, Adams State – Did not run at NCAAs last year but finished fourth behind Batt and Stevens in 2012 for a 2-3-4 ASU finish.
Derek Alcorn, Colorado Mines – A three-time All-American who finished 33rd a year ago
Brayden Burgleigh, Shippensburg – Finished 47th a year ago but won the indoor mile title in 2014
Victor Samoei, Alaska Anchorage – Last year’s only freshman All-American in 32nd place
