Running USA Annual Marathon Report

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - (March 23, 2014) - With the spring marathon season opening, it is time for Running USA's annual
Marathon Report. Despite several cancellations due to weather and the Boston Marathon terror attack, 2013 was another record year for the classic distance with more than 1,100 marathons run across the country generating 541,000 finishers with a breakdown of 57% men and 43% women (a new high).

Last year, we reported that the estimated number of U.S. marathon finishers had declined from a record high 518,000 finishers in 2011 to 487,000 in 2012 (a 6% decrease), but like 2001, most of the decline was attributed to a unique situation; in 2001, it was post-9/11 travel impacting fall marathons, and in 2012, the ING New York City Marathon, the world's largest 26.2 mile race with 47,000-plus finishers, was cancelled due to the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. If the NYC Marathon had been held in 2012, there is no doubt that the 2012 overall marathon finisher total would have exceeded the 2011 record of 518,000 marathon finishers.

2013 was also another year of unlikely perils impacting U.S. marathons. On April 15, the Boston Marathon's finish line area suffered an act of terror, 4 hours, 9 minutes, 43 seconds into the race. In addition, two large-scale December events, the MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon and St. Jude Memphis Marathon were cancelled due to inclement weather, both the same weekend. The result of those unable to finish the Boston Marathon as well as event cancellations was approximately 13,000 fewer marathon finishers for 2013 in those events. But the return of the New York City Marathon (left, PhotoRun) with its record 50,266 finishers helped push the aforementioned 2013 number to a new high.

Kastor Shines, Kiptoo Edges Lowe At RNR Dallas
DALLAS (March 23, 2014) - Deena Kastor took the streets of Dallas by storm on Sunday morning. Amid chilly and windy conditions, the 41-year-old three-time Olympian and American record-holder turned in the fifth-fastest half-marathon time by a U.S. runner in 2014 with a new course record at the
Rock 'n' Roll Dallas Half Marathon on Sunday. Kastor, the Olympic bronze medalist in the marathon in 2004, covered the 13.1-mile course in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 57 seconds. Along the way, she also set new U.S. masters records for 10 miles (55:13) and 20K (1:08:18). She narrowly missed the U.S. masters half-marathon record (1:11:50) set by
Colleen De Reuck in 2006.

Julius Kiptoo, a 36-year-old Kenyan who lives in Ohio, took first place in the men's half marathon, crossing the finish line in 1:06:02-just 2 seconds faster than second-place finisher
Colby Lowe, a former Oklahoma State All-American runner from Southlake, Texas.

Defending Champ, Top American to Battle at 2014 Carlsbad 5000
CARLSBAD, Calif. - March 18, 2014 -
Dejen Gebremeskel (right) will attempt to make history at the Carlsbad 5000 on Sunday, March 30 by winning for the fourth consecutive time. However,
Bernard Lagat, his old nemesis - literally and figuratively- will try to block his historic attempt.

"I realize I will make history if I win a fourth race in Carlsbad," said Gebremeskel, who won the silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2012 London Olympics. "It's a special race for me and a special race in American road racing."

The 24-year-old Gebremeskel and the 39-year-old Lagat have met several times in recent years. Each time, the native-born Kenyan has preceded the Ethiopian across the finish line. Their rivalry began in 2009 when Lagat finished second and Gebremeskel was third in the 5000m at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. They met a year later over 3000m at the Boston Indoor Games, with Lagat winning and Gebremeskel the runner-up. In 2011, Lagat won the silver medal in the 5000m at the IAAF World Championships and Gebremeskel was third. And earlier this month, they again finished 2-3 in the 3000m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Sopot, Poland.

This will be Lagat's debut in the Carlsbad 5000 and the naturalized American has his sights set on breaking the U.S. record of 13:24 set by Marc Davis in 1996.
