Feb. 1, 2014

SEATTLE, Wash. - Praise Adesida set a school record in the shot put, Alycia Cridebring broke the Aggie mark in the 3,000-meter run and freshman Holly Tokarhad an impressive debut in the pole vault, as the UC Davis women's indoor track and field team opened the season strong at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor.

In all, eight Aggies set marks that rank them on the program's top-five career leaders list. The meet, hosted by the University of Washington, featured a field comprised of top collegiate and professional competitors.

The Aggies also capped the meet with a win in the 4x400 relay, going 3:46.43 and beating BYU and Washington, among others.

"Each indoor season the women continue to raise the level of performance, and if today is any indication, 2014 will continue that trend," said head coach Drew Wartenburg.

Sprinter Ashley Marshall led a strong sprinting effort from UC Davis, finishing second in the 200 (24.72) and third in the finals of the 60 (7.47). The Aggies had a strong showing in the 200 - one of the meet's first events on Friday afternoon - with Leslie Reed (25.18) and Cekarri Nixon (25.21) placing fourth and fifth, respectively, and Holly Miller(25.79) finishing 12th.

Adesida launched her school-record shot put mark of 48 feet, 10.25 inches on her second throw on Saturday, eventually finishing fifth. It broke the previous mark of 48-9 set by Chidinma Onyewuenyiin 2011.

Cridebring later set a school mark of her own, besting alumna and Olympian Kim Conley'srecord in the 3,000 (9:19.16) when she posted a 10-second PR by finishing eighth in the invitational heat at Washington in 9:16.39.
Erika Barr also had a PR in the event, crossing in 9:39.07 and moving into fifth all-time at UC Davis. Christine Hoffman was timed in 9:41.35, posting another solid mark for the Aggies. Another great distance effort came from Raquel Lambdinwho was ninth in the invitational mile, clocking a mark of 4:48.70, which jumped her to No. 2 on the Aggies' all-time list.

Besides Adesida, the Aggies' performances in the field events included two other outstanding marks, including one by Tokar, a freshman from Ventura. She cleared 12-6 on her second attempt, coming just a half-inch shy of the school record set by Emily Bushin 2012.

Nixon continued her strong meet with a third-place showing in the invitational 400, finishing with a PR in the 400 in 55.73, an improvement on her No. 2 all-time mark of 55.87. Shanie Landenhad another career-best showing with her 10th-place in the invitational 800 in 2:09.09. It was an improvement on her No. 3 all-time position.

Catherine Li had a PR in the triple jump of 38-2.25, moving her into fifth on the Aggies' top-five list.

Nixon, Reed, Marshall and Landen then teamed on the 4x400 relay, winning in 3:46.43. They beat BYU (3:47.06) and host Washington (3:47.37) who grabbed the next two spots.

"Emphasis this weekend fell first and foremost on simply putting a uniform on and adopting a competitive attitude," Wartenburg said. "We were fortunate to have athletes put themselves in position to contend, and while we don't chase marks in our program, it's always a pleasing side-benefit when school records fall and the all-time performance lists are rearranged.

"This group heads home with some strong opening efforts and with clear areas where we can make gains moving forward in preparation for to return to Seattle two weeks from now. "

UC Davis will return to Dempsey Indoor for the Husky Classic on Feb. 14-15.
