Member Profile: Joplin Memorial Run

The Joplin Memorial Run was originally the Boomtown Run and operated under that name for 10 years. The 2011 event was cancelled when, 10 days prior to the run, an EF5 tornado ripped through the heart of Joplin, killing 161 people. The Boomtown Run was named one of Runner's World Heroes of Running for 2011 when, in lieu of the run, participants flooded Joplin to help with debris clean up following the devastation caused by the tornado. It was with that spirit that the run was rebranded the Joplin Memorial Run in 2012 and became a way to honor the 161 people who lost their lives in the tornado. The executive committee wanted to provide hope to the Joplin community while also staging a first class event for runners from all over the country.

This year's Joplin Memorial Run will take place the weekend of May 10, 2014. On Friday evening, May 9, there will be the Expo, a Walk of Silence and the annual Kids Run. On Saturday, May 10, there will be the Half Marathon and 5k. As always, the Half Marathon and 5k will feature entertainment along the route (local bands, cheerleaders, radio stations and more) as well as a post-race party and beer garden.

The Walk of Silence is a new event for 2014. Open to the public at no charge, the Walk will begin at 7:00 p.m., Friday for participants to walk the 11 blocks housing the 161 banners that name and honor each of the victims killed in the May 22, 2011 tornado. This will be a time of remembrance for the entire community.

Participants in the Half Marathon and 5k will receive an official men or women's cut tech shirt and a custom designed finisher medal. Kids Run participants will receive an official Joplin Memorial Run Kids Run shirt and finisher medal.

Returning Premier Sponsor for the Joplin Memorial Run is Freeman Health System and the event is presented by American Family Insurance. For more information, visit joplinmemorialrun.com or find us on Facebook at facebook.com/joplinmemorialrun.

All Member Profiles will also be featured on our website for one full week following the publication in Running USA Industry E-News. To be featured in this section, contact nancy@runningusa.org.
