The Spartans will be in the starting blocks for their first meet in school history.
Head coach Jeff Petersmeyer is taking the first SJSU women's track and field team to Seattle for its debut.
Jan. 30, 2014
The San Jose State University women's track and field team makes its program debut Saturday, February 1, at the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Track on the University of Washington campus.
San Jose State is one of more than 20 West Coast schools with entries in the two-day meet that begins on Friday, January 31.
"We're excited to go to our first track meet. Obviously, it's big for our program. We're excited to see what we can do in the events in which we are entered this weekend," said San Jose State track and field head coach Jeff Petersmeyerwho projects taking 14 Spartans to Seattle. "We have a lot of people in the 60 meter dash and the mile.
"We want to see where we left off from cross country with the distance runners and see what kind of shape we are in and measure where we are at. In the 60, we have some new people that joined us recently and we want to gauge where are at as well.
The UW Invitational is the first NCAA track and field competition for the university since 1988 when the men's program competed for the last time at the Big West Conference Championships in Logan, Utah.
"We have the meet this weekend at Washington. We'll be at Fresno State for their invitational (February 16). Then, we'll have our (Mountain West) conference meet and anybody that qualifies after that, they'll have the NCAA Championships," Petersmeyer said about the 2014 indoor season.

The Bowerman Update: Rupp's Record Book Romp, The Watch List in Action and New Balance Indoor Grand Prix & Millrose Entries
January 31, 2014
NEW ORLEANS – Between former The Bowerman winner Galen Rupp‘s march through the history books and a bevy of former The Bowerman winners and finalists – along with current Watch-Listers – being announced for major upcoming meets, it has been a big news week for collegiate track & field’s highest individual honor.

This Weekend’s Watch List Action
Last weekend 2009 men’s winner Rupp took down the indoor American record for two miles at Boston University’s Terrier Invitational in 8:07.41, breaking Bernard Lagat’s former mark of 8:09.49 from a year ago. The two-mile record came just over a week after he set the indoor American 5000 meters record of 13:01.26 on the very same track.
Rupp was on world-record pace through much of the race, putting up a serious challenge to Kenenisa Bekele’s 8:04.35 from 2008. He ultimately finished as the No. 6 performer on the all-time world indoor two-mile performance list.
His two-mile record is the 21st national record set by former winners of and finalists for The Bowerman in the Trophy’s short five-year history.
You can watch his race, which was broadcast online live on Flotrack Pro, here.
Speaking of world records, Rupp’s coach Alberto Salazar of the Nike Oregon Project told the Oregonian’s Ken Goe earlier this week that Rupp will make a run at the indoor mile world record – 3:48.45 by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1997 – in two weekends’ time on February 15 at the Boston University Scarlet & White Invitational.
Rupp’s current personal-best of 3:50.92 over the mile distance indoors was set last year on Boston University’s track.
He had originally intended to go after the American indoor of 3:49.89, held again by Lagat, at next weekend’s Boston University Valentine Invitational.
Live streaming will be available for a fee through Flotrack Pro.
Should he break the world record, he would become the second world-record-holding men’s winner of The Bowerman Trophy, joining former Oregon teammate and 2010 winner Ashton Eaton (decathlon, indoor heptathlon).
The Bowerman at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix
Inaugural 2009 women’s The Bowerman Trophy winner Jenny (Barringer) Simpson and 2010 men’s finalistRyan Whiting had been previously announced as competitors in the two-mile and shot put, respectively, at February 8′s New Balance Indoor Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston, but an announcement this week added several more fellow The Bowerman alumni to the meet’s schedule.
Two more former winners of The Bowerman Trophy in 2010 men’s winner Ashton Eaton – the world record holder in the decathlon and indoor heptathlon, both events in which he is the reigning world champion – and 2012 men’s winner Cam Levins were added to the meet’s entry list earlier this week, as was 2012 women’s finalist Brianne Theisen-Eaton.
Ashton Eaton will compete in the 60-meter dash, while wife Brianne will long jump and pace the 1000 meters race.
Levins, a newly minted Canadian record-holder at 5000 meters in that same race as Rupp, will take on an impressive field at 3000 meters. Olympics silver medalist at 5000 meters Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia and world junior 3000 meters record-holder Hagos Gebrhiwet will be his top challengers as he chases the win and the Canadian record of 7:40.17 set in 2007 by Kevin Sullivan.
Simpson could also be chasing a national record at the two-mile distance: the American record of 9:23.38 by Regina Jacobs in 2002 on the very same track.
Current Watch-Listers at the Millrose Games
The Millrose Games organizers announced this week the fields for the iconic Wanamaker Mile, and both the men’s and women’s races feature current members of The Bowerman Watch List.
Lawi Lalang of Arizona – a 2013 finalist for The Bowerman – will return to The Armory in New York City for the second consecutive season to contest the Wanamaker Mile. His 3:54.56 in last season’s race was the third-fastest ever by a collegian, though he lost out to collegiate record-holder Chris O’Hare.
Both Lalang – who has stated an intention to break the collegiate mile record this season – and O’Hare are back, along with a stacked field of professionals including Matthew Centrowitz, Nick Willis and American outdoor mile record-holder Alan Webb in his final track race.
The women’s race will feature Florida’s Cory McGee against teen phenoms Mary Cain and Alexa Efraimson, Morgan Uceny and 2013 indoor mile NCAA champion Emma Coburn.
Previously announced The Bowerman alumni competing at Millrose include 2010 men’s winner Ashton Eaton, 2012 men’s winner Cam Levins, 2009 men’s finalist German Fernandez and 2012 women’s finalistBrianne Theisen-Eaton.
This Weekend’s Watch List Action
This is the final weekend of action before the February editions of the men’s and women’s Watch Lists for The Bowerman are unveiled next Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, and a handful of current Watch-Listers will be competing this weekend to secure those spots against heavy opposition.
Six of the top 10 men on the Preseason Watch List and four of the top 10 women – along with a pair of men and five women also receiving votes – are slated to compete around the country with a majority of the action taking place at the Division I National Meet of the Week: the Arkansas Razorback Team Invitational.
Arkansas Razorbacks Team Invitational
Seven total men from the Watch List and one woman Watch-Lister will compete in Fayetteville, including the weekend’s only head-to-head match-up between members of the Watch List.
Quarter-mile specialists Deon Lendore of Texas A&M and Arman Hall of Florida are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the nation right now, and the duo will square off at approximately 2 p.m. ET/1 CT.
This will be the second consecutive head-to-head The Bowerman showdown for Hall, who defeated Oregon’s Mike Berry (also receiving votes) at last week’s Kentucky Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational.
Making her debut at 400 meters will be Texas A&M Kamaria Brown.
A pair of current members of the Watch List will face considerable resistance from opponents who could potentially replace them on the Watch List in their signature events.
Wayne Davis II of Texas A&M will likely square off with Florida’s Eddie Lovett – a member of the Watch List in 2013 — in the 60-meter hurdles in Saturday’s final at 3:30 p.m. ET/2:30 CT. Davis was the outdoor 110-meter hurdles champion in 2013 to Lovett’s runner-up finish, while indoors Lovett was the 60 hurdles winner to Davis’ runner-up showing.
Davis is currently No. 6 in the nation, while Lovett is No. 3 coming off a win over top-ranked Demoye Bogle.
Texas’ multi-event athlete Johannes Hock will also contest the 60-meter hurdles in the opposite prelim of Davis and could force another head-to-head The Bowerman match-up.
Florida State’s Dentarius Locke (also receiving votes) was the preseason No. 1 at 60 meters and is currently No. 3 on the qualifying list, but he will have to face current No. 1 Prezel Hardy, Jr., of Texas A&M, who is also the collegiate leader at 200 meters. Both Locke and Hall will square off with Hardy over that distance.
Defending indoor long jump champion Marquis Dendy of Florida will make his season debut in his signature event, as well as the triple jump. He was the preseason No. 1 in both events, and will face preseason No. 2 Raymond Higgs of Arkansas in the LJ and current collegiate leader Jonathan Reid of Florida State in the TJ.
Two-time reigning indoor pole vault champion Andrew Irwin will look to jump-start his 2014 campaign at home after not clearing 17 feet in either of his first two competitions.
Washington Invitational
Lawi Lalang of Arizona – a 2013 The Bowerman men’s finalist – made a statement at the Arkansas Razorback Team Invitational last season with third third-fastest 3000 meters race in collegiate history, and this year he will look to top his mark in the same event at the Washington Invitational on Saturday.
Boise State’s Emma Bates (also receiving votes) will contest the women’s 3000 meters in Seattle on Saturday after racing at 5000 meters Friday.
Elsewhere Around the Nation
Fresh off the third-fastest indoor mile in collegiate history and the seventh-fastest in American history, Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino will be part of a team effort at the Penn State National Friday evening to post a strong qualifying time for the Big Green’s distance medley relay squad.
Two-time defending outdoor 400 meters champion Ashley Spencer of Texas will make her 2014 indoor debut at her signature event at Iowa State on Saturday.
Defending outdoor pole vault champion Beth (Buell) Firsick of South Dakota (also receiving votes) will contest the pole vault. She is currently ranked No. 6 on the national qualifying list.
Meanwhile in the Midwest, 2013 indoor pole vault national champ Natalia Bartnovskaya of Kansas (also receiving votes) will compete at the Wichita State Varsity Apartments Invitational on Friday evening.
Texas Tech’s Cierra White (also receiving votes) will compete at 200 meters at her home Masked Rider Invitational.
Rounding out the Watch List action is San Diego State’s defending outdoor triple jump champion Shanieka Thomas making her 2014 debut at Houston’s Howie Ryan Invitational.

The Warm-Up Lap: What to Watch in College T&F This Weekend
The Warm-Up Lap: What to Watch in College T&F This Weekend
January 31, 2014
NEW ORLEANS – Arkansas, Grand Valley State and UW-Whitewater are the sites of this weekend’s USTFCCCA National Meets of the Week — the creme of the crop in a weekend with more than 80 collegiate meets around the country.
World-class match-ups await fans of collegiate track & field in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday and Saturday at theDivision I National Meet of the Week Razorback Team Invitational, where seemingly each and every sprints, hurdles and jumps event features at the very least one top-ranked competitor and sometimes the top two in the nation
Speaking of the top two, that’s exactly the match-up that will be taking place in Allendale, Mich., on Saturday as the No. 1 Lincoln (Mo.) women take on No. 2 Grand Valley State at the GVSU Five-Way in the Division II National Meet of the Week.
On the opposite side of Lake Michigan, UW-Whitewater will on Friday be hosting the men’s Leonard "Squig" Converse Invitational and on Saturday the women’s Warhawk Classic Invitational, which combine as the Division III National Meet of the Week. Among the numerous top-ranked teams slated to compete are defending indoor men’s champion No. 1 UW-La Crosse and women’s champion No. 4 UW-Oshkosh.
And be sure to take a look at the latest list of times/marks made by 2013 college football players during the 2014 indoor season, which could come in handy during your Super Bowl viewing experience this Sunday.
Also on the horizon next weekend are the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Though the USTFCCA doesn’t keep a list of top marks by student-athletes who split between indoor track & field and ice hockey, we can report that Hannah Jaiven of Hamilton in Division III is not only competing in both but excelling at both. Not only is she the school’s pole vault record holder, she has scored two goals and notched two assists on defense this season for the hockey team.
She pulled off perhaps the most unique double of the season two weekends ago, competing at Colgate in the morning with the track & field team before returning to campus in the afternoon for a home hockey game against Williams.

Defending men’s indoor national champion No. 1 Arkansas and the Razorbacks’ No. 7 women will play host this weekend to a bevy of ranked programs – albeit in varying levels of participation – at its Razorback Team Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Both No. 2 squads will be in town as the second-ranked Florida men bring a significant contingent of its team and the second-ranked Texas women will split its squad between Fayetteville and Iowa State.
Other ranked teams in the men’s competition include No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 6 Florida State, No. 10 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Texas and No. 20 Stanford. Top-25 women’s teams scheduled to compete are No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Florida, No. 9 Stanford and No. 17 Florida State.
As they typically do in SEC Country, the sprints and jumps are expected to take center stage in Fayetteville with match-ups reminiscent of conference-championship level competition.
That list is topped by the men’s 400, which features The Bowerman Watch-Listers Deon Lendore of Texas A&M and Arman Hall of Florida – ranked No. 1 and 2 in 2014, respectively – up against No. 3 Neil Braddy of Arkansas and six other top-20 performers in 2014.
It will be Hall’s second match-up against a rival Watch-Lister in as many weeks after taking down Oregon’s Mike Berry (also receiving votes) last week at Kentucky.
Hall also figures to be a major player at 200 meters, where the third-ranked Gator will take on another collegiate leader from Texas A&M in Prezel Hardy, Jr., and three other top-10 sprinters in Tulsa’s No. 6 Bryce Robinson and A&M’s No. 7 Michael Bryan and No. 10 Shavez Hart.
Hardy has already equaled the 2013 time of preseason No. 1 at 60 meters, Dentarius Locke of Florida State, and the two will line up against one another this weekend.
Though not as deep as some of the other fields, the 60-meter hurdles features a showdown between The Bowerman Watch-Lister/outdoor 110-meter hurdles champ Wayne Davis II of Texas A&M and defending indoor 60-meter hurdles champ Eddie Lovett of Florida. Davis was runner-up to Lovett indoors, while Lovett was second to Davis outdoors.
The women’s sprints match-ups are equally captivating, especially at 200 meters. No. 3 Regine Williams of Arkansas will battle No. 4 Ashton Purvis and No. 8 Olivia Ekpone of Texas A&M, and also No. 10 Ebony Eutsey of Florida.
The Bowerman Watch List member Kamaria Brown will have her hands full in her 2014 400 meters debut, with No. 2 Eutsey of Florida, No. 7 Chrishuna Williams of Arkansas and No. 8 Save Watson of Florida State also on the start line.
In the field, The Bowerman Watch List member and defending men’s indoor long jump champion Marquis Dendy of Florida will compete in his signature event for the first time this season. He will be joined by rival preseason No. 2 Raymond Higgs of Arkansas and No. 7 Stefan Brits of Florida State, both of whom are also debuting.
Dendy is also the preseason No. 1 in the triple jump, an event in which he will also make his 2014 debut. Florida State’s Jonathan Reid has staked his claim as the No. 1 in 2014 with a 53-3¾ (16.25m) mark identical to Dendy’s best in 2013.
Top-ranked women’s triple jumper LaQue Moen-Davis of Texas A&M is set to duel with No. 2 Ciarra Brewer of Florida. Moen-Davis is also No. 6 in the long jump, up against No. 2 Robin Reynolds of Florida and No. 9 Der’Renae Freeman of Florida State.
Competing in his first heptathlon of the season is 2013 national champ Kevin Lazas of Arkansas. His outdoor rival, The Bowerman Watch-Lister and outdoor decathlon champ Johannes Hock of Texas, won’t compete in the full heptathlon but is entered in the open long jump and 60-meter hurdle events.
Highlighting the distance events are the men’s 800 – which features preseason No. 1 and No. 4 Tomas Squella and Patrick Rono of Arkansas against the Florida duo of Sean Obinwa and Andres Arroyo – and the men’s 3000. Contesting the 3k are preseason No. 2 Kirubel Erassa of Oklahoma State, No. 16 Stanley Kebenei of Arkansas and No. 17 Ryan Dohner of Texas.
Arkansas’ duo of former National Athlete of the Week Dominique Scott and Grace Heymsfield headline the women’s mile, while Texas Marielle Hall of Texas tops the women’s 3K.

There’s nothing like settling – at least for the time being – a tight National Team Computer Rankings battle with some good ol’ fashioned head-to-head competition. Throw out the rankings, put away the descending order lists and get out your popcorn: the women of No. 1 Lincoln (Mo.) and No. 2 Grand Valley State – the two most dominant women’s programs in recent history — are set to square off this weekend.
Lincoln (Mo.)’s women, powered by their sprints, hurdles and jumps, have either won the NCAA indoor team title (2009, 2010) or finished runners-up (2011, 2013) in all but one of the past five seasons.
GVSU, coming off its second straight cross country title in the fall, has won two of the past three national titles indoors (2011, 2012) and finished runner-up the two years prior (2009, 2010).
That match-up alone is enough to merit "National Meet of the Week" status, made even better by the rest of the women’s field and the men’s field, which includes No. 4 GVSU and No. 11 Lewis – at its best national rank since the beginning of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2010.
Neither Lincoln or GVSU appear to be pulling many punches if the entry lists are any indication, with numerous events featuring top-25 individuals going head-to-head with one another. Generally speaking, Lincoln draws its strength from the sprints, hurdles and jumps while GVSU is powered by its strong distance and throws corps, but there are overlaps that will provide for very intriguing match-ups.
GVSU’s Kalena Franklin is the nation’s top-ranked 60-meter hurdler at this point in the season, and she’ll have to prove her mettle against the Lincoln trio of No. 4 Ladonna Richards, No. 8 Juneille Barker and No. 11 Shakiesha Miller.
The script is flipped in the mile distance, where Lincoln’s Twishana Williams (No. 12 nationally) could potentially take on GVSU’s top distance runners in Jessica Janecke (No. 2, 5000 meters), Allyson Winchester (No. 8, 3000 meters) and Hannah Osborn (No. 9, 3000 meters). Also expected to be in the thick of it is Hillsdale’s sixth-ranked Molly Oren.
If the meet isn’t settled by the time all the individual events have finished, it will come down to the 4×400 meter relay finale, an event in which Lincoln and GVSU are, very fittingly, ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
Events to watch on the men’s side include the 800 meters and the high jump. Though nation-leading 800-meter man Ethan Barnes of GVSU is stepping up to the mile for this meet, a top-10 tussle is still in the cards with No. 5 Jeremy Wilk of GVSU, No. 8 Matt Jemilo of Lewis and No. 9 Jermaine Blake of Lincoln (Mo.).
The high jump is headlined by a pair of men tied at No. 5 in the nation in GVSU’s Trent Chappell and Lewis’ Isaac Jean-Paul, who both cleared identical heights of 6-10¾ (2.10m) last weekend.

Division III National Meet(s) of the Week
UW-Whitewater Men’s Leonard "Squig" Converse Invitational/Women’s Warhawk Classic Invitational
Friday, Jan. 31 / Saturday, Feb. 1 | Full Schedules: Men / Women | Kachel Fieldhouse – Whitewater, Wis.
Five of the top eight men’s teams in the most recent USTFCCCA Division III National Team Computer Rankings and four of the top 15 women’s teams will be in action this weekend in Whitewater, Wis., as UW-Whitewater hosts the men’s Leonard "Squig" Converse Invitational on Friday and the corresponding women’s Warhawk Classic Invitational Saturday.
No. 1 defending men’s champion UW-La Crosse headlines a deep and talented men’s field that also features host No. 4 UW-Whitewater, No. 5 UW-Oshkosh, No. 7 North Central (Ill.) and No. 8 Monmouth (Ill.). Only six different programs have won national indoor DIII titles since the first championships in 1985, and three of them – UW-La Crosse (16), North Central (4) and UW-Oshkosh (1) – will be represented Friday.
Both the track and field events will be loaded with superb match-ups, but keep an especially close eye on the long jump and pole vault. Division III long jump leader James Wilson of Monmouth is up against a field that includes No. 5 Kyle Schueller and No. 7 Jonathan Jordan of UW-Oshkosh and No. 9 Justin Bowers and No. 10 Cory Zaeske of UW-Whitewater.
In the pole vault, No. 2 Michael Bennett of Chicago – a former National Athlete of the Week – will take on the three-headed UW-La Crosse vaulting monster that is No. 3 Jeffery Hill, t-No. 4 Bryan Klister and t-No. 4 Rob Rohe, along with t-No. 4 Jake Dickmann of UW-Oshkosh.
The men’s mile will feature a convergence of top distance runners as UW-La Crosse’s Sean Royer (preseason No. 1 at 800 meters), North Central’s John Crain (currently No. 2 at 5000 meters) and preseason No. 9 miler Dawson Miller of UW-Whitewater square off.
Four men are within six-tenths of a second of one another at 60 meters, headlined by No. 3 Corey Broussard of UW-Whitewater. He will take on No. 6 Alex Koenen of UW-La Crosse and a pair of men tied at No. 13 in Kiante Green of Monmouth (Ill.) and Naji Allan of UW-Oshkosh.
Headlining Saturday’s team competition are defending national indoor champion No. 4 UW-Oshkosh, No. 6 UW-Whitewater, No. 12 North Central and No. 13 Monmouth.
Reigning National Athlete of the Week Melanie Brickner of UW-Oshkosh headlines the throws, which are shaping up to be the meet’s most tightly contested events. As the ninth-best weight thrower in Division history, she will take on fourth-ranked No. 4 Shelby Mahr of UW-Whitewater and No. 9 Raven Robinson of Monmouth.
She is the underdog in the shot put at No. 6, behind No. 2 teammate Jecel Klotz, No. 3 Ebony Stallworth and No. 4 Mahr of Whitewater.
Highlights on the track include the 800 and 60 meter races. Preseason No. 4 Amanda Brom of UW-Whitewater will go up at 800 meters against current No. 6 Kylee Verhasselt of Oshkosh and No. 15 Brittany Kozlowski of St. Norbert; while at 60 meters preseason No. 7 Lexie Sondgeroth of Whitewater will take on current No. 6 Felicia Carlson of Beloit and No. 8 Liz LeCaptain of St. Norbert.

Arkansas Razorback Team Invitational

FOLLOW LIVE: Video | Results

Los Angeles to host 2016 Olympic Team Trials For Men's and Women's Marathon -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOS ANGELES –The City of Los Angeles will host the Women’s and Men’s 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon, USA Track & Field, the U.S. Olympic Committee, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and LA MARATHON LLC announced Wednesday. The 2016 Olympic Trials will be held Feb. 13, 2016. With separate starts, the men’s and women’s races both will be carried in their entirety on NBC. “We are thrilled with what Los Angeles will provide to our athletes, the Olympic movement and the sport of long distance running by hosting this event,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “With television coverage on NBC and incredible public and private support for the race in one of the world’s biggest media markets, everything is in place to continue to elevate the Olympic Trials and give our athletes a platform on which they can truly shine.” “I'm happy and honored USA Track & Field and the U.S. Olympic Committee have chosen Los Angeles as host city for the 2016 Olympic marathon trials,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “With its iconic landmarks and decades of experience hosting world class sporting events, Los Angeles is the ideal location for America’s elite marathoners to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.” “The U.S. Olympic Committee is pleased to be returning to Los Angeles with this amazing event,” USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said. “As the host of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, Los Angeles has a tremendous Olympic legacy and L.A.’s status as a global center of sport and culture make it an exceptional host for the Olympic Trials.” Making history In winning the bid, LA MARATHON LLC proposed a February race date that accommodates an NBC broadcast and ensures athletes optimal time to recover should they choose to run in the 2016 Olympic Trials for Track & Field in June. The LA Marathon will follow a day later, on Feb. 14, 2016, providing a weekend festival that celebrates road racing on all levels. “Securing the privilege of hosting the Olympic Trials Marathon could not have been accomplished without the tireless partnership and commitment from business and civic leaders across Los Angeles, including the LA Sports Council,” said Tracey Russell, CEO of LA MARATHON LLC. “It truly seems appropriate that today, some 30 years after Joan Benoit Samuelson’s 1984 triumph in the first Olympic women’s marathon here in this city, we’re announcing once again that America’s Olympic marathoners will create history and find glory on the streets of Los Angeles. By securing the Olympic Trials, Los Angeles is now set to deliver this city’s biggest running weekend since that iconic victory, providing our LA Marathon participants and fans with a rare opportunity to be part of an Olympic Trials celebration.” “Congratulations to Mayor Garcetti, to our team at LA MARATHON LLC, and to all of our partners involved in the 2016 Olympic Trials bid,” said Frank McCourt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of McCourt Global, who in 2008 acquired the operating rights to the LA Marathon. “Today’s announcement clearly illustrates the positive impact that smart people and effective public-private partnerships can deliver for the community and for the sports we’re passionate about. We hope that today marks the start of a very long and productive relationship between LA MARATHON LLC and USA Track & Field.” National Tour Hosting the 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles continues a national tour for the event: In 2004, the women’s Olympic Trials were in St. Louis and men’s in Birmingham, Ala.; the 2008 Olympic Trials were held in Boston (women) and New York (men); and 2012 saw both races together for the first time in Houston. USATF entertained bids for the 2016 Olympic Trials from three cities: Cincinnati, Houston and Los Angeles. “Houston did a phenomenal job hosting the first combined men’s and women’s marathon Olympic Trials in 2012,” Siegel said. “In Los Angeles, we will continue to grow that model and help elevate the excitement for the Olympic Trials throughout the country.” Start times and specifics on the criterium courses for both the men’s and women’s races will be determined in coming months. # # # USA Track & Field (USATF) is the National Governing Body for track and field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States. Oregon Women Take Over Division I Indoor National Team Computer Rankings
January 28, 2014
NEW ORLEANS – Behind breakout first-year campaigns for a pair of young Ducklings, four-time defending women’s team champion Oregon jumped to the top spot in the first regular-season edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Team Computer Rankings released Tuesday, while the defending champion Arkansas men remained No. 1.

Though such veterans as National Athlete of the Week Laura Roesler and Phyllis Francis – both members of the Preseason Watch List for The Bowerman – and Jenna Prandini already living up to preseason expectations, Oregon flew three spots up the rankings to No. 1 for the first time since the end of the 2012 regular season after starting the season at No. 4 largely because of the emergence of first-year Ducks Jasmine Todd and Sasha Wallace.
Todd, with just two collegiate competitions under her belt, is already the collegiate leader in the long jump and ranked No. 2 at 60 meters, while Wallace is fourth in the nation in the 60-meter hurdles. Neither were taken into account in the preseason rankings.

The season is still young, but Oregon is now projected by the computers as the favorite to claim the NCAA Division I Indoor title for the fifth consecutive year. Only LSU’s women from 1993 through 1997 has accomplished that feat indoors.
Other than Oregon’s ascension to No. 1, both the men’s and women’s top-fives remained relatively unchanged. The Ducks’ move pushed the former top-three teams each down one spot: Texas to No. 2, Texas A&M to No. 3 and Florida to No. 4. Georgia remained No. 5.

On the men’s side Arkansas held steady atop the rankings, followed by No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 5 Texas A&M.
The national team rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. For the preseason ranking and early-season rankings, data will be taken from previous seasons as well as the current season.
The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points. A full description of the rankings can be found here.
The USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings should not be referred to as a "poll” as no voting occurs during the process.
Women’s Rankings
Despite winning its fourth-consecutive national team crown indoors last year, Oregon did so having not been ranked as the No. 1 team at any point during the 2013 season. This marks the first time atop the rankings for the Ducks since they had Division I indoor rankings in a stranglehold for 20 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team from the middle of the 2010 season through the end of the end of 2012.
With 190.08 rankings points, the Ducks now hold an approximately 20-point advantage over formerly top-ranked Texas at No. 2.
As previously mentioned, the duo of Todd and Wallace were behind the Ducks’ rise to No. 1, accounting for 53.3 points between three events in Oregon’s 64-point improvement of its preseason mark.
No. 2 Texas, which has yet to fully open competition as a complete team, may have dropped a spot but its score remained relatively steady – within five points – at 170.50.
In-state rival No. 3 Texas A&M also fell one spot in the rankings, but actually marginally improved its rankings score to 159.91 to drawn nearer to Oregon and Texas. Sprinter Olivia Ekpone played a large role in the gain, as she improved to No. 5 in 2014 at 60 meters and No. 8 at 200 meters, as did sixth-ranked weight thrower Brea Garrett.
No. 4 Florida slipped both in terms of position and rankings score, falling six points for a score of 140.70, while SEC rival No. 5 Georgia closed what had been a nearly 40-point gap between itself and the No. 4 spot to approximately nine points with 131.05. A pair of first-year student-athletes came through big for the Bulldogs in newly minted American Junior indoor pentathlon record holder Kendell Williams and second-ranked high jumper Leonita Kallenou.
Rounding out the top-10 were No. 6 Kentucky (105.83), No. 7 Arkansas (95.41), No. 8 LSU (68.10), No. 9 Stanford (67.37) and No. 10 Kansas (59.23).
Just outside the top 10, No. 11 Providence was up one spot to its highest indoor rank since the beginning of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2008. Also attaining their highest ranks since 2008 were No. 13 Dartmouth and No. 14 Purdue.
Baylor made the biggest advance of all the women’s teams, jumping seven spots to No. 19.
Men’s Rankings
Top-ranked defending champion Arkansas saw its rankings score advantage over No. 2 Florida shrink ever so slightly since the preseason rankings in early January, but the Razorbacks still remained nearly 46 points clear of the Gators with a score of 219.84.
This week marked the 15th time in the past 18 editions of the rankings in which Arkansas has been the top-ranked team, and the 10th time in a row.
Florida, national champions in the three years prior to Arkansas’ most recent 2013 title, held steady at No. 2 with 174.08 rankings points.
Marking time at No. 3 was Oregon with 155.55 points.
Separated by only a point in the preseason, both No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 5 Texas A&M improved their rankings scores by approximately 15 points to 113.88 and 113.74, respectively.
The Badgers were boosted by Michael Lihrman’s jump to No. 2 in the weight throw, while the Aggies’ former National Athlete of the Week Prezel Hardy, Jr., powered Texas A&M with the nation’s top raw performances at 60 and 200 meters.
No. 6 Florida State moved up one spot from the preseason, swapping places with now-No.7 Penn State. Arizona jumped nine spots to No. 8, dropping Nebraska back one spot to No. 9. Oklahoma State held steady at No. 10 to complete the top 10.
The appearance in the top 10 is the first for the Arizona men since the beginning of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2008.
Just beyond the top 10 was No. 11 Arizona State, which improved 10 spots. But it wasn’t the Sun Devils, or even No. 16 Cornell which improved 12 spots, that claimed the honor of biggest top-25 gainer. That honor went to No. 24 Houston, up 19 spots from early January.
No. 13 UTEP improved nine spots for its highest ranking since the inception of the USTFCCCA rankings. The Miners were joined in that category by No. 16 Cornell, No. 17 Alabama (tied its best), and No. 24 Houston.
