A Quiet Weekend Yields Little Change to D1 National Rankings, Teams Gear for Big Conference Weekend

A Quiet Weekend Yields Little Change to D1 National Rankings, Teams Gear for Big Conference Weekend
The top 10 remains unchanged in the men’s national team rankings

February 23, 2010

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday the fifth weekly update of the NCAA Division I National Team Rankings for indoor track & field. As a result of a relatively quiet weekend around the nation, the men’s top 10 remained unchanged and the women’s top 10 moved slightly. A large majority of the nation’s conferences will host conference championships this weekend which will make this upcoming weekend a must-see for many in the track & field world.

This week’s national team rankings are compiled using only data from the 2010 indoor season. The only exception is combined event marks from 2009 which will factor in this week’s rankings but not the next.

Texas A&M’s men (182.08) remains on top of the national leaderboard for the fourth-consecutive week. The Aggies travel to Ames, Iowa, this weekend for the Big 12 Indoor Championships to be held Friday and Saturday. The Big 12, as always, will prove to be a hefty battleground as defending champ Texas, who despite not being in the national top 25 all season, is fourth in the South Central regional index this week, the second-best among conference foes. No. 8 Nebraska is the top-ranked team in the Midwest region and No. 9 Texas Tech is the highest-ranked team in the Mountain region. And, No. 10 Baylor and No. 12 Oklahoma also bring a lot to the Big 12 party.

No. 1 Oregon (198.11) on the women’s side travels to Seattle, Wash., for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships this weekend. No. 16 Arizona will join the Ducks in Seattle and sits behind UO in the West region index. The No. 2 Oregon men will be challenged by No. 5 Arizona State, No. 14 Stanford, and No. 18 Arizona for top spots in the MPSF. Regionally, Oregon is followed by Arizona State, Arizona, Stanford, and UCLA in the West.

The SEC Indoor Championships will be held in Fayetteville, Ark., beginning Friday. The men’s conference title will be battled amongst seven nationally ranked teams including No. 3 LSU, No. 4 Florida and No. 6 Arkansas. However, No. 25 Georgia could be in the mix as well as they are the top-ranked team in South region ahead of Florida and Tennessee.

On the women’s side, five of the nation’s top 10 reside in the SEC with No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Tennessee, No. 5 LSU, No. 6 Arkansas, and No. 9 Auburn taking shots at the league crown. Auburn, followed by Florida and Tennessee hold the top three spots in the South region index while Arkansas and LSU are 2-3 in the South Central.
