Mark Matusak Runs 3:58 Indoor Mile to Set Cal Record at Husky Classic
Michael Coe Also Posts NCAA Automatic Qualifying Time in 3000 meters

Feb. 13, 2010

SEATTLE, Wash. - Senior Mark Matusak ran the first sub-4-minute indoor mile in Cal history and junior Michael Coe had an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 3000 meters to lead the Golden Bears during Saturday's competition at the Husky Classic.

Matusak completed the mile in 3:58.36, breaking the NCAA automatic qualifying standard and snapping the old school mark of 4:00.29 set by Coe at last year's MPSF championships on the same Dempsey Indoor Stadium surface. Matusak finished third in the race behind Adrian Blincoe (New Balance), who finished in 3:57.05, and Oregon's Mac Fleet, who was clocked in 3:57.70.

Matusak becomes the fifth Golden Bear to break four minutes in the mile indoors or outdoors, and his time was the second fasest for a Cal runner under any circumstances, passed only by Coe's 3:56.18 outdoor mile last year. Other Bears to run a sub-4-minute mile outdoors are David Torrence (3:58.62, 2007), Don Bowden (3:58.7h, 1957) and Andy Clifford (3:59.59, 1979).

In the invitational 3000, Coe was sixth overall in 7:52.14, more than two seconds under the NCAA automatic time of 7:54.50, and about four seconds shy of his school record in the event established last year.

In addition to Matusak and Coe, Cal athletes recorded five NCAA provisional qualifying marks - Kimyon Broom in the women's 60 hurdles, Allison Stokke in the women's pole vault, Sofia Oberg in the women's 800, Connor Landry in the men's pole vault and Sebastian Sam in the men's 800. All five had already provisionally qualified in their events earlier this season, and all but Broom improved on their season bests.

Broom, who has set the school 60 hurdles record twice already in 2010, was second in the hurdles Saturday, finishing in 8.33 seconds, just 0.03 off her Cal mark.

Stokke led three Cal vaulters in the top six, tying for third in a season-best 13-3.75. She had cleared 13-1.50 in Cal's opening meet in Albuquerque, N.M., back on Jan. 23. On Saturday, both Theresa Raub and Cyrena Giordano tied for sixth at 12-10.00.

Placing 15th in a strong field, Oberg bettered her previous collegiate PR by finishing in 2:07.97 in the invitational 800.

In the men's pole vault, Landry had only one miss at his first four heights to tie for third in a personal-best 17-5.50. Justin Miller also PR'd with a clearance of 16-11.50, with Michael Morrison going 16-5.50 and Ryan Shuler 15-11.75.

Sam was 19th in the invitational 800 and improved on his NCAA provisional mark by posting a time of 1:50.04, a third-of-a-second faster than his time two weeks ago and two-tenths of a second off his PR.

Among other PRs established during the day were by Aaron Burney in the 60 hurdles (8.13), Tom Blocker in the 400 (49.70), Hammed Suleman in the triple jump (49-6.25) and Patrick Kowalsky in the shot put (58-0.75). Nick Porter also ran a season-best in the 200, sprinting to a time of 22.41 seconds.
