Texas A&M wins fourth Big 12 Indoor title
Aggie men place third for second consecutive year

Ames, Iowa - A fourth consecutive Big 12 Indoor championship was claimed by the No. 2 Texas A&M women on Saturday when a surplus of sprinting and hurdling points rolled into a 117-point second day effort at the Lied Recreation-Athletic Facility on the Iowa State campus.
"Since I've been here we've started a trend winning the conference title and I hope it continues," Porscha Lucas stated. "I knew we had the ability to be a great team when I was in my freshman year, but I didn't expect to have this many titles under our belt by the time I was a senior."
Including the outdoor conference meet, the Aggie women have now won seven consecutive titles since earning their first ever league title in this same building during the 2007 indoor season.
The No. 1 Aggie men placed third in team scoring for the second consecutive year, scoring 99.5 points this year compared to the 84 they attained last season. Oklahoma won the men's title with 114 points ahead of Nebraska's 110.
In addition Texas A&M earned a couple of points in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown with Texas, who placed sixth (71 points) in the men's competition and seventh (58 points) in the women's field.
"Across the board if you look at everything the team did, they really got after it today," Aggie head coach Pat Henry said. "It's a tough meet for us to win.
"You can have a really good team and come in here and be third or fourth, but still have a good track team at the next meet. I'm extremely pleased with the overall effort of our team."
Gabby Mayo scored 25 points in the meet for the Aggies and claimed high point honors for the second consecutive year. She won the 60 hurdles in a school record 8.05 seconds and 20 minutes later edged out a win in the 60 meters with a 7.30 clocking. A fourth-place effort in the 200 added five more points to her tally.
"I'm happy to have come out on top," Mayo said. "I'm very pleased to have repeated that double and to be high point scorer again. Hopefully, I'll get even faster by nationals. I'm glad to have this type of competition on my team, it makes us all faster."
Porscha Lucas and Jessica Beard each won their respective event for the third consecutive year. Then the women's 4 x 400 relay finished off the meet by winning for a fourth consecutive year.
"We did a lot of things today that don't happen very often," Henry noted. "Jessica is an amazing human being right now. Gabby is a tremendous talent and anybody who can double and then come back and contribute in another event is a huge performance."
For the men victories in the 200 by Curtis Mitchell and 400 by Tabarie Henry was topped off by a 4 x 400 relay win, the first ever for A&M at a Big 12 indoor meet.
For the weekend the Aggies totaled six individual victories and two relay wins. Six runner-up efforts followed along with five third-place finishes.
Texas Tech led the women's meet by eight points over Texas A&M following the 800. With three event finals remaining the Aggies reclaimed the lead and built a 19-point cushion with a dominating display of speed in the 200.
Lucas led an A&M 1-2-3-4 sweep for 29 points in the 200, winning in a time of 23.12 seconds. The time broke the Lied Center record of 23.16 set in 1998 by Nanceen Perry of Texas. Beard finished second in a NCAA automatic time of 23.18 while Jeneba Tarmoh (Mt. Pleasant HS, San Jose) (23.25) placed third and Mayo (23.43) was fourth.
Tech finished with 115 points while Nebraska placed third with 96 and Oklahoma totaled 65 for fourth.
"I'm excited that I was able to win the 200 again," Lucas said. "We had a plan with Jessica in the 200 and it worked. I told her she could run well in the 200. After the prelims I knew we had the capability to sweep the final."
Beard put on quite the show in the 400 with a winning time of 51.15, the fastest time ever by an American on an oversized track and seventh best in the world. It bettered the conference meet record of 52.23 set in 2004 by Raasin McIntosh of Texas. It also bettered the Lied Center record of 52.11 set by Shauna Smith of Wyoming.
"I really feel blessed to have that type of performance," Beard noted. "I knew I was capable of doing something great, but I didn't know the plan God had for me. I found out today.
"When I saw the time for my 200 I thought, `wow, I hit the auto mark in the 200.' I had a talk with Porscha before the race and told her I'm going to get out fast if I'm in the same section as you. She said we could go 1-4. I'm glad our strategy worked and we came out on top."
The collegiate leader heading into the meet, Beard also broke her school record of 51.77 seconds she established as the NCAA runner-up last March. Beard also set the fastest time in the world this season on any sized track. During the Russian Championships held this weekend a world best time of 51.22 was set by Tatyana Firova.
In repeating her double victory from last season, Mayo defeated teammate Natasha Ruddock (8.11) in the 60 hurdles in a school record of 8.05 seconds and then 20 minutes later claimed the 60 meters in 7.30 over Oklahoma's Scottesha Miller, who also clocked 7.30. The difference between the two sprinters in the 60 - 7.295 to 7.297.
The Aggie women totaled 24 points in the hurdles and 19 more in the 60 meters. Behind Mayo and Ruddock in the 60 hurdles were Vashti Thomas (8.41) finishing fifth and Donique' Flemings (8.53) in seventh. Tarmoh (7.33) placed third in the 60 while Lucas (7.43) finished sixth.
For the women's relay victory the foursome of Tarmoh, Flemings, Andrea Sutherland and Beard won with a 3:33.20 clocking to break the Big 12 meet record of 3:34.29 established by Baylor in 2000.
The fourth consecutive victory in the women's 4 x 400 by Texas A&M matched a four-year cycle by Texas from 2002-2005.
"In the relay we almost hit the NCAA auto mark of 3:33, so we're not far from it," Beard said. "I'm pretty sure that will get us a good ranking for the NCAA Championships."
In the men's relay the Aggie foursome of Demetrius Pinder, Tran Howell, Bryan Miller and Henry won in 3:04.99 to end a 12-year winning streak by Baylor, who placed second in 3:05.57.
"In the relay, like always, we fight hard to the end," T. Henry said. "That's what it takes to be champions. It was great to win this. Those Baylor guys always want to win the relay. To stab those guys in the heart, it feels good."
Oklahoma, who led Nebraska by one point (108 to 107) heading into the relay, placed third in the 4 x 400 (3:08.01) to earn the deciding points for the men's team title. The Sooners totaled 114 points while Nebraska was second with 110.
Tabarie Henry paced a 1-2-4 effort by the Aggie men in the 400, winning A&M's first title in the event with a 46.28 while teammate Pinder placed second in 46.49. Miller finished fourth in 46.81.
"Today I tried some new things that the coaches wanted me to do in the 400," T. Henry said. "I tried it out and the outcome was ok. It's a learning process from here on out."
Curtis Mitchell won the 200 in 20.73, becoming the third A&M champ in the event at a Big 12 indoor meet, as he bettered two-time defending champion Trey Harts of Baylor (21.12) who placed fourth.
Gerald Phiri (21.05) finished third behind OU's Rakieem Salaam (20.80) while Howell (21.56) placed sixth. In the 60 Phiri (6.70) placed second and had a close finish with Salaam, who was awarded the win with a 6.69 clocking.
Sandy Wooten set a school record in the 600 yards attempting to defend her Big 12 title in the event. Wooten finished third in 1:20.88 while teammate Sutherland placed fourth in a career best of 1:21.37.
The men's 600 yards resulted in a 2-3 finish for Joey Roberts (1:09.52) and Michael Preble (1:09.93). Roberts set the third-fastest time ever at A&M.
Ashika Charan (Hometown:West Covina, California; High School:Claremont
produced her best triple jump of the season, reaching a distance of 42-9 (13.03), for second place. Thomas (41-9.75) placed eighth while Tiffany Peters (40-9.75) just missed scoring in ninth place.
The men's triple jump also had a runner-up finish for Zuheir Sharif (Franklin HS, Elk Grove), who led the event during the finals. Sharif, a two-time Big 12 champion, established a mark of 53-9 in the fifth round, but was passed by a 54-0.5 from Texas Tech's Bryce Lamb in the sixth stanza.
Tyron Stewart (52-3.5) placed fourth for A&M in the triple jump while Julian Reid (50-1.25) finished 10th.
Another key fourth-place finish was turned in by Daphne Fitzpatrick as she cleared a personal best of 5-9.25, eighth best on the Aggie all-time list.
Kevin Burnett ran 8:12.83 to place seventh in the 3,000.

Cantwell, Campbell win Visa Championship Series titles at 2010 USA Indoor Championships
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Christian Cantwell and Amber Campbell won the respective men's and women's 2010 Indoor Visa Championship Series titles on the final day of the 2010 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
The USA Indoor Championships are the third and final event of USA Track & Field's 2010 Indoor Visa Championship Series. Top finishing athletes at the championships earn the opportunity to compete at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, March 12-14, in Doha, Qatar.
The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau, along with the New Mexico Sports Authority, the University of New Mexico and USATF New Mexico, are the official hosts for the championships, which will also be held in Albuquerque in 2011 and 2012. For the second consecutive day, Albuquerque filled the Convention Center with a sell-out crowd, with 3,150 fans on hand to watch the action.
Cantwell continues winning ways in Visa Men's Shot Put
2009 World Outdoor men's shot put champion Christian Cantwell, who entered the 2010 season ranked #1 in the world by Track & Field News, won his fourth USA Indoor title with a best throw of 21.13 meters/69 feet 4 inches.
Cantwell, who owns four of the top six throws in the world this indoor season, finished ahead of 2009 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor champion Ryan Whiting, who finished second with a best throw of 21.03m/69-0, with 2009 USA Indoor Championships fourth-place finisher Cory Martin finishing third in 20.60m/67-7.
The 2007 Indoor Visa champion, Cantwell won the men's Visa Championship Series title and a $30,000 bonus from Visa by the narrowest of margins over two-time indoor Visa Champion Terrence Trammell. Cantwell tallied 1,238 points for the win with Trammell finishing as the runner-up with 1,238 points ($15,000) and Bernard Lagat finished third with 1,219 points ($5,000).
Campbell wins Visa Champion title and $30,000
2008 Olympian and former New Mexico resident Amber Campbell truly enjoyed her homecoming by dominating the field in the women's 20-lb. weight throw on Saturday and ending up with the women's Visa Championship Series title on Sunday.
Campbell ended the suspense Saturday on her first throw, which sailed to 24.70 meters/81 feet 0.50 inch, which is the third-farthest throw ever in history and gave her a fourth consecutive U.S. Indoor title.
Campbell's performance gave her the lead in the Women's Indoor Visa Championship Series with 1,213 points, and it held up through Sunday as Campbell was awarded her winner's bonus of $30,000 from Visa.
Finishing as the runner-up was sprinter Carmelita Jeter (CSU Dominguez Hills), who fell just one point short of Campbell's winning tally. Jeter, who earned $15,000 for her efforts, finished just ahead of third place Visa Championship Series finisher Debbie Dunn, $5,000 (1,212 and 1,200 respectfully).
Powell wins Visa Women's 60m hurdles
Two-time USA Outdoor 100m hurdles champion Ginnie Powell (Rainier Beach HS, Seattle, WA 2002; USC) added the first USA Indoor title of her career to her resume by winning the Visa Women's 60m hurdles final in 7.87 seconds.
Powell won a tough battle with three-time USA Indoor champion and two-time USA Indoor Visa Championship Series winner Lolo Jones, who pressed Powell all the way to the finish before finishing as the runner-up in 7.89 seconds. 2008 Olympic Games fourth-place finisher Damu Cherry (High School: Leto (Tampa, Fla.) HS ‘96
College: University of South Florida ‘00) finished third in 7.90.
Trammell wins men's 60m hurdles again
Two-time Olympic Games and three-time World Outdoor Championships 110m hurdles silver medalist Terrence Trammell made it a clean sweep of the three USATF Indoor Visa Championship Series meets with his 60m hurdles win this afternoon in Albuquerque in the world-leading time this season of 7.41 seconds.
Trammell, who also won the hurdles at the 2010 Millrose Games and Reebok Boston Indoor Games, now has five USA Indoor titles, with his previous triumphs coming in 2000, 2001, 2006 & 2009.
Finishing as the runner-up was 2008 Olympic Games 110m hurdles bronze medalist and 2008 USA Indoor champion David Oliver, who crossed the line in 7.54 seconds, and former University of Michigan standout Jeff Porter finished third in 7.62.
Jeter sails to win in women's 60 meters
Two-time World Outdoor Championships 100m bronze medalist and 2007 USA Indoor Championships 60m runner-up Carmelita Jeter got out fast and was never seriously challenged in winning the women's 60 meters in 7.02 seconds, which is the second-fastest time in the world this year.
Jeter, who posted the third-fastest time globally this season of 7.05 seconds earlier this month in Stuttgart, Germany, finished well ahead of runner-up Miki Barber, who crossed the line in 7.15 seconds with Gloria Asumnu, who finished the 2009 season ranked #8 in the U.S. by T&FN, placing third in 7.18.
Camarena wins women's shot put
2008 Olympian Jillian Camarena (Woodland High School, Stanford)was victorious in the women's shot put with a best throw of 18.63 meters/61 feet 1.50 inches. For Camarena it was her fifth career U.S. Indoor title to go along with her triumphs from 2005, '06, '07 & '09.
Finishing as the runner-up was two-time USA Outdoor champion and 2004 World Junior Championships gold medalist Michelle Carter, who had a best throw of 18.03m/59-2.
Williams' season of dominance continues in Visa Men's 60 Meters
2009 USA Outdoor Championships 100m seventh-place finisher Ivory Williams, who posted wins earlier this season at the Millrose Games in New York City and at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, was victorious again today in the Visa Men's 60 meters.
Williams final burst with about ten meters remaining was enough to win the race and his first USA Indoor title in the world-leading time of 6.49 seconds. 2008 USA Indoor champion and 2009 USA Outdoor champion Mike Rodgers was the runner-up in 6.52 seconds, with Trell Kimmons finishing third in 6.56. Two-time Olympic medalist Walter Dix finished fourth in 6.58 seconds.
Hicks wins men's long jump
Former LSU standout Jeremy Hicks, who finished as the runner-up in the long jump at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships and ended the 2009 season ranked #9 in the country by Track & Field News, won his first-ever U.S. national title with a leap of 7.94 meters/26 feet .75 inch.
Jeff Henderson's best jump was the identical distance of Hicks' best leap, but Hicks posted five other legal jumps, while Henderson, who ended up in second place, fouled on his five other attempts, thus making Hicks the victor. Former University of Washington standout Norris Frederick finished third with a best of 7.89m/25-10.25
Uceny upsets Rowbury in Nike Women's 1,500 Meters
Former Cornell standout Morgan Uceny, who finished fourth in the 800 meters at the 2007 USA Outdoor Championships, was victorious in the Nike Women's 1,500 meters in winning her first ever USA Indoor title.
Uceny crossed the finish line first in 4:19.46, just barely edging out 2009 World Outdoor Championships 1,500m bronze medalist Shannon Rowbury (Sacred Heart Cathedral HS, San Francisco; Duke) , who finished as the runner-up in 4:19.48. 2009 USA Outdoor Championships fourth-place finisher Erin Donohue placed third in 4:21.86, with 2005 USA Junior champion Sarah Bowman placing fourth in 4:22.28.
Symmonds captures Nike Men's 800 Meters
2008 Olympian and 2009 World Outdoor Championships finalist Nick Symmonds won the second USA Indoor title of his career when he finished first in the Nike Men's 800m in 1:48.10.
Symmonds, who first won the USA Indoor men's 800m crown in 2007, had been living and training in Albuquerque for the last month and his training came in handy as he faced a strong challenge from former University of Southern California standout Duane Solomon (Cabrillo High School, Lompoc), who finished as the runner-up in 1:48.41. Tyler Mulder finished third in 1:48.53.
Pierce wins women's 800 meters in U.S. leading time
Former U.S. women's 3,000m steeplechase record holder Anna (Willard) Pierce entered the 2010 season ranked #2 in the world at 800 meters and she rose to the occasion in the women's 800m final, winning it in 2:00.84 seconds. For Pierce, she adds this title to the USA Indoor 1,500m crown she won in 2009.
Finishing as the runner-up was Alysia Johnson (Hometown:
Canyon Country, Calif.; High School:Canyon HS), who crossed the finish line in 2:01.45, with Heather Dorniden placing third in 2:02.33.
"Batman" wins men's 400 meters
2008 Olympic Games and 2009 World Outdoor Championships 400m hurdles bronze medalist Bershawn "Batman" Jackson won the men's 400 meters in 45.41 seconds. Jackson, who first won this event in 2005, finished just ahead of 2009 USA Indoor champion Jamaal Torrence, who was the runner-up in 45.76 seconds, with Greg Nixon placing third in 45.77.
2008 Olympic Games 400m hurdles silver medalist Kerron Clement won heat 1 of the two-section final in 46.29 seconds.
Manzano wins hard-fought men's 1,500 meters
2008 Olympian and 2009 World Outdoor Championships 1,500m finalist Leo Manzano won his first career USA Indoor title when he crossed the finish line ahead of the field in the men's 1,500m final in 3:49.16.
It was a three-man battle coming off the final turn between Manzano, 2008 Olympic Trials fourth-place finisher Will Leer and 2009 USA Indoor 3,000m champion David Torrence, but Manzano had too much in reserve in the end to be defeated. Leer finished as the runner-up in 3:49.31, with Torrence placing third in 3:50.08
Dunn does it in women's 400 meters
2009 World Outdoor Championships 4x400m relay gold medalist Debbie Dunn blistered the track in posting the fastest time in the world this year in winning the women's 400 meters (in a two section final) in 50.86 seconds.
2004 Olympic Games 4x400m relay gold medalist DeeDee Trotter finished as the runner-up in 51.23, with two-time Olympic Games 200m silver medalist and three-time World Outdoor champion Allyson Felix (LA Baptist HS) finishing third in 51.37 seconds,
Janson takes Gill Women's Pole Vault
Former Florida State standout Lacy Janson, who failed to clear a height at this event last year, improved considerably on that performance by winning the Gill Women's Pole Vault with a clearance of 4.65 meters/15 feet 3 inches.
2009 World Outdoor Championships silver medalist Chelsea Johnson (Atascadero HS, UCLA) finished as the runner-up by soaring over 4.60m/15-1, with 2003 NCAA Outdoor champion Becky Holliday finishing third by clearing 4.55m/14-11.
Michta captures women's 3,000m race walk crown
Maria Michta of Walk USA won her first career U.S. Indoor title when she crossed the finish line first in the women's 3,000m race walk in 13 minutes 51.33 seconds. Finishing as the runner-up was four-time USA Indoor champion Joanne Dow (14:01.53), with seven-time USA Indoor champion Teresa Vaill placing third in 14:09.42
In masters exhibition competition today, Paul Ossman won the men's shot put with his first round throw of 15.58 meters/51 feet 1.50 inches, and Charles Brown was victorious in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 4.20m/13-9.25.

Jeter sails to win in women's 60 meters
Two-time World Outdoor Championships 100m bronze medalist and 2007 USA Indoor Championships 60m runner-up Carmelita Jeter got out fast and was never seriously challenged in winning the women's 60 meters in 7.02 seconds, which is the second-fastest time in the world this year.
Jeter, who posted the third-fastest time globally this season of 7.05 seconds earlier this month in Stuttgart, Germany, finished well ahead of runner-up Miki Barber, who crossed the line in 7.15 seconds with Gloria Asumnu, who finished the 2009 season ranked #8 in the U.S. by T&FN, placing third in 7.18.
Camarena wins women's shot put
2008 Olympian Jillian Camarena (Woodland High School, Stanford)was victorious in the women's shot put with a best throw of 18.63 meters/61 feet 1.50 inches. For Camarena it was her fifth career U.S. Indoor title to go along with her triumphs from 2005, '06, '07 & '09.
Finishing as the runner-up was two-time USA Outdoor champion and 2004 World Junior Championships gold medalist Michelle Carter, who had a best throw of 18.03m/59-2.
Williams' season of dominance continues in Visa Men's 60 Meters
2009 USA Outdoor Championships 100m seventh-place finisher Ivory Williams, who posted wins earlier this season at the Millrose Games in New York City and at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, was victorious again today in the Visa Men's 60 meters.
Williams final burst with about ten meters remaining was enough to win the race and his first USA Indoor title in the world-leading time of 6.49 seconds. 2008 USA Indoor champion and 2009 USA Outdoor champion Mike Rodgers was the runner-up in 6.52 seconds, with Trell Kimmons finishing third in 6.56. Two-time Olympic medalist Walter Dix finished fourth in 6.58 seconds.
Hicks wins men's long jump
Former LSU standout Jeremy Hicks, who finished as the runner-up in the long jump at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships and ended the 2009 season ranked #9 in the country by Track & Field News, won his first-ever U.S. national title with a leap of 7.94 meters/26 feet .75 inch.
Jeff Henderson's best jump was the identical distance of Hicks' best leap, but Hicks posted five other legal jumps, while Henderson, who ended up in second place, fouled on his five other attempts, thus making Hicks the victor. Former University of Washington standout Norris Frederick finished third with a best of 7.89m/25-10.25
Uceny upsets Rowbury in Nike Women's 1,500 Meters
Former Cornell standout Morgan Uceny, who finished fourth in the 800 meters at the 2007 USA Outdoor Championships, was victorious in the Nike Women's 1,500 meters in winning her first ever USA Indoor title.
Uceny crossed the finish line first in 4:19.46, just barely edging out 2009 World Outdoor Championships 1,500m bronze medalist Shannon Rowbury (Sacred Heart Cathedral HS, San Francisco; Duke) , who finished as the runner-up in 4:19.48. 2009 USA Outdoor Championships fourth-place finisher Erin Donohue placed third in 4:21.86, with 2005 USA Junior champion Sarah Bowman placing fourth in 4:22.28.
Symmonds captures Nike Men's 800 Meters
2008 Olympian and 2009 World Outdoor Championships finalist Nick Symmonds won the second USA Indoor title of his career when he finished first in the Nike Men's 800m in 1:48.10.
Symmonds, who first won the USA Indoor men's 800m crown in 2007, had been living and training in Albuquerque for the last month and his training came in handy as he faced a strong challenge from former University of Southern California standout Duane Solomon (Cabrillo High School, Lompoc), who finished as the runner-up in 1:48.41. Tyler Mulder finished third in 1:48.53.
Pierce wins women's 800 meters in U.S. leading time
Former U.S. women's 3,000m steeplechase record holder Anna (Willard) Pierce entered the 2010 season ranked #2 in the world at 800 meters and she rose to the occasion in the women's 800m final, winning it in 2:00.84 seconds. For Pierce, she adds this title to the USA Indoor 1,500m crown she won in 2009.
Finishing as the runner-up was Alysia Johnson (Hometown:
Canyon Country, Calif.; High School:Canyon HS), who crossed the finish line in 2:01.45, with Heather Dorniden placing third in 2:02.33.
"Batman" wins men's 400 meters
2008 Olympic Games and 2009 World Outdoor Championships 400m hurdles bronze medalist Bershawn "Batman" Jackson won the men's 400 meters in 45.41 seconds. Jackson, who first won this event in 2005, finished just ahead of 2009 USA Indoor champion Jamaal Torrence, who was the runner-up in 45.76 seconds, with Greg Nixon placing third in 45.77.
2008 Olympic Games 400m hurdles silver medalist Kerron Clement won heat 1 of the two-section final in 46.29 seconds.
Manzano wins hard-fought men's 1,500 meters
2008 Olympian and 2009 World Outdoor Championships 1,500m finalist Leo Manzano won his first career USA Indoor title when he crossed the finish line ahead of the field in the men's 1,500m final in 3:49.16.
It was a three-man battle coming off the final turn between Manzano, 2008 Olympic Trials fourth-place finisher Will Leer and 2009 USA Indoor 3,000m champion David Torrence, but Manzano had too much in reserve in the end to be defeated. Leer finished as the runner-up in 3:49.31, with Torrence placing third in 3:50.08
Dunn does it in women's 400 meters
2009 World Outdoor Championships 4x400m relay gold medalist Debbie Dunn blistered the track in posting the fastest time in the world this year in winning the women's 400 meters (in a two section final) in 50.86 seconds.
2004 Olympic Games 4x400m relay gold medalist DeeDee Trotter finished as the runner-up in 51.23, with two-time Olympic Games 200m silver medalist and three-time World Outdoor champion Allyson Felix (LA Baptist HS) finishing third in 51.37 seconds,
Janson takes Gill Women's Pole Vault
Former Florida State standout Lacy Janson, who failed to clear a height at this event last year, improved considerably on that performance by winning the Gill Women's Pole Vault with a clearance of 4.65 meters/15 feet 3 inches.
2009 World Outdoor Championships silver medalist Chelsea Johnson (Atascadero HS, UCLA) finished as the runner-up by soaring over 4.60m/15-1, with 2003 NCAA Outdoor champion Becky Holliday finishing third by clearing 4.55m/14-11.
Michta captures women's 3,000m race walk crown
Maria Michta of Walk USA won her first career U.S. Indoor title when she crossed the finish line first in the women's 3,000m race walk in 13 minutes 51.33 seconds. Finishing as the runner-up was four-time USA Indoor champion Joanne Dow (14:01.53), with seven-time USA Indoor champion Teresa Vaill placing third in 14:09.42
In masters exhibition competition today, Paul Ossman won the men's shot put with his first round throw of 15.58 meters/51 feet 1.50 inches, and Charles Brown was victorious in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 4.20m/13-9.25.

Reubennette Webdell Camarena Spencer, 94, passed away in Woodland on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. She was born on Oct. 4, 1915, to Reuben and Laura (Mills) Webdell in Yuba City. She grew up in Oroville, where she met and married Charles Camarena in September 1932. They moved to Woodland in 1938, where they established the Woodland Bakery until Charles' death in 1956. She married Ellery Spencer in August 1963.
She was employed by Clarence Tracy at Tracy Motor Company from 1949 to 1970 and Elm Ford from 1970 to 1978. She was a charter member of the Woodland Soroptimist Club and a charter member of Woodland Organ Club. She enjoyed family and friends, listening to music, reading, traveling, and spending time at Eagle Lake.
She is survived by her devoted family: Son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Marilyn Camarena; step-daughters, Janice Spencer Crowley and Linda Spencer (Larry) Gilbert; grandchildren, Anthony Camarena, James Camarena (Julie), Christi Camarena (Garey) White, Jillian Camarena (Dustin) Williams, Lisa Camarena (Bill) Fries, Casey Crowley (Sean) Avalos, Karen Crowley (Luis) Rodriguez, Larry II, Steven, Chris, and Scott Gilbert. She is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Charles Camarena (1956) and Ellery Spencer (1980); son, Wendell Camarena; and infant grandson, Michael Camarena.
She leaves behind her faithful friends, Bill and Esther McGrew, and Joy Paulson, and caregiver, Kim Jenkins.
As per her request, there will be no funeral service. Burial arrangements are through the Nautilus Society of Sacramento with internment at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 CR-22, Woodland.

It was awesome. I went out having pr'd three weeks ago. I knew the altitude would be a factor and it was. It hit me at 2,000m. I just finished strong. I felt like I was dreaming the last 100m. It was just so exciting.
Jeremy Hicks, men's long jump winner
Being called a national champion sounds pretty good. This was my third time here at this track and it was definitely my best performance. It was wonderful. I believed in myself and it finally paid off.
Nick Symmonds, men's 800m winner
I was pretty worried for a minute there. When I saw I was a couple of seconds behind at 600m, I was like that's a lot to make up. That last lap I was running scared.
That dead spot in the track is gone. It's a great track and it was a great race.
Leo Manzano, men's 1,500m winner
It was a good race. This is nationals and the best in the nation were here. I knew I had to give it a go and it worked out really well. I hadn't trained at altitude yet so I was at a disadvantage. I just had to go out and compete.

I think my start wasn't what it should have been, I was trying not to jump. I was trying to be aggressive through the first hurdles and I really focus on four and five. I still have time to improve before Doha. I'm not injured, coming off a head cold. I expect the best in Doha.

AMES, Iowa -- Texas A&M's Gabby Mayo was the high-point performer at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships for a second straight year to lead the Aggie women to their fourth straight title Saturday.
Mayo defended her titles in the 60-meter hurdles (8.05 seconds, a school record) and 60-meter dash (7.30) in helping the Aggies to 130 1/2 points. Texas Tech was second with 115.
"I'm happy to have come out on top," said Mayo, who also was fourth in the 200-meter dash. "I'm very pleased to have repeated that double and to be high-point scorer again. Hopefully, I'll get even faster by nationals. I'm glad to have this type of competition on my team, it makes us all faster."
On the men's side, Oklahoma won the last event to win its first indoor crown with 114 points, four more than Nebraska. A&M was third (99 1/2).
A&M's Jessica Beard won her third consecutive 400-meter dash (51.15), which was a Big 12 meet record. Porscha Lucas won her third straight 200 meters (23.12). The Aggies ended by winning the 4x400 meter relay, setting a meet in 3:33.20.
"Since I've been here we've started a trend winning the conference title and I hope it continues," Lucas said. "I knew we had the ability to be a great team when I was in my freshman year, but I didn't expect to have this many titles under our belt by the time I was a senior."
The Aggie men won three events -- Tabarie Henry in the 400 meters (46.28), Curtis Mitchell in the 200 meters (20.73) and the 4x400 relay team (3:04.99).
"Across the board if you look at everything the team did, they really got after it today," A&M head coach Pat Henry said. "It's a tough meet for us to win. You can have a really good team and come in here and be third or fourth, but still have a good track team at the next meet. I'm extremely pleased with the overall effort of our team."
Texas Tech led the women's meet by eight points over A&M after the 800. With three event finals remaining the Aggies reclaimed the lead and built a 19-point cushion by dominating the 200.
Lucas led an A&M 1-2-3-4 sweep for 29 points. Her time broke the Lied Center record of 23.16 set in 1998 by Nanceen Perry of Texas. Beard finished second in a NCAA automatic time of 23.18 while Jeneba Tarmoh (Mt. Pleasant HS, San Jose) (23.25) placed third and Mayo (23.43) was fourth.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Karoline Koehler [Erfurt, Germany (Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium)] won the triple jump and took second in the 60-meter dash to lead the San Diego State track and field team to a third-place finish at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. The third-place finish was the Aztecs' best since 2004.
Koehler captured her first indoor triple jump title with a leap of 43 feet, 10.50 inches, her second NCAA automatically qualifying jump of the season. She also took second in the 60 meters in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.39 seconds and fourth in the 200 in a personal-best clocking of 24.07 (fifth in school history).
Koehler, who also took first in the long jump on Friday, earned the MWC High Point Award after cumulating 33 points over the three-day event. It is the third time Koehler won the high point award (2009 outdoor and 2008 indoor).
"I was very happy with how we competed as a team," first-year head coach Shelia Burrell said. "The only thing on our mind was to compete and go after every point. We had (personal records) all across the board and Karoline (Koehler) had an amazing meet."
Junior Stephanie James [Granite Bay, Calif. (Granite Bay HS)]earned the Co-Outstanding Performance of the meet after winning the pole vault on Friday in a jump of 14-01.25, which set a school record, a MWC all-time record and a MWC championship meet record.

Aztecs earn best team finish since 2004
Karoline Koehler won the MWC High Point Award in the Aztecs' third-place finish at the indoor championships.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Karoline Koehler [Erfurt, Germany (Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium)] won the triple jump and took second in the 60-meter dash to lead the San Diego State track and field team to a third-place finish at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. The third-place finish was the Aztecs' best since 2004.
Koehler captured her first indoor triple jump title with a leap of 43 feet, 10.50 inches, her second NCAA automatically qualifying jump of the season. She also took second in the 60 meters in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.39 seconds and fourth in the 200 in a personal-best clocking of 24.07 (fifth in school history).
Koehler, who also took first in the long jump on Friday, earned the MWC High Point Award after cumulating 33 points over the three-day event. It is the third time Koehler won the high point award (2009 outdoor and 2008 indoor).
"I was very happy with how we competed as a team," first-year head coach Shelia Burrell said. "The only thing on our mind was to compete and go after every point. We had (personal records) all across the board and Karoline (Koehler) had an amazing meet."
Junior Stephanie James [Granite Bay, Calif. (Granite Bay HS)]earned the Co-Outstanding Performance of the meet after winning the pole vault on Friday in a jump of 14-01.25, which set a school record, a MWC all-time record and a MWC championship meet record.

Final Results
NAMPA, Idaho – University of Hawai‘i high jumper Amber Kaufman (Branham High School, San Jose) captured the gold medal for the second consecutive year at the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
For Kaufman, it was her fourth gold medal at WAC meets during her career. The San Jose, Calif., native cleared 6-0 (1.83m) to easily capture the title over teammate Sarah Saddleton Auckland, New Zealand / ACG Strathallan(5-8/1.73m), who finished runner-up for the second straight year. Freshman Sam Balentine (Lodi, CA / Lodi HS), who placed fourth in the pentathlon two days earlier, was sixth at 5-5.75 (1.67m).
Most of UH’s 61.5 team points came from the high jump as the Rainbow Wahine scored 21 points in the event.
Louisiana Tech captured its fifth straight WAC Indoor title with 175 points followed by Utah State (104.5), Idaho (102), New Mexico State (63), UH (61.5), Nevada (55.5), Boise State (51), and Fresno State (49.5).
Newcomer Madara Apine, a Florida transfer, captured the silver medal in the triple jump at her first WAC meet. The Latvian jumped 39-11.25 (12.17m), to extend UH’s silver medal streak in the event to three straight years.
In the weight throw, Anika Borden and Emma MacCorquodale finished fourth and fifth, respectively, earning UH nine team points. Borden, a junior from Honolulu, threw 52-8.25 (16.06m) while MacCorquodale, a sophomore from Nanaimo, British Columbia, heaved 52-6.5 (16.01m) to finish close behind.
UH entered three competitors in the pole vault competition with top finisher Karen Guravska tying for eighth with a jump of 11-7.75 (3.55m). Senior Sam Whitehall picked up two team points for UH in the 800-meter final, placing seventh at 2:19.62.
The Rainbow Wahine capped the meet with a seventh place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Cecelia Durocher, Whitehall, Mariana Monasi (Oceanside, CA / San Diego), and Jamilee Jimenez completed the race in 4:08.07.
Kaufman will next compete in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark. The rest of the Rainbow Wahine will prepare for the outdoor track season which begins in mid-March.

NAMPA, Idaho – University of Hawai‘i high jumper Amber Kaufman (Branham High School, San Jose) captured the gold medal for the second consecutive year at the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
For Kaufman, it was her fourth gold medal at WAC meets during her career. The San Jose, Calif., native cleared 6-0 (1.83m) to easily capture the title over teammate Sarah Saddleton Auckland, New Zealand / ACG Strathallan(5-8/1.73m), who finished runner-up for the second straight year. Freshman Sam Balentine (Lodi, CA / Lodi HS), who placed fourth in the pentathlon two days earlier, was sixth at 5-5.75 (1.67m).
Most of UH’s 61.5 team points came from the high jump as the Rainbow Wahine scored 21 points in the event.
Louisiana Tech captured its fifth straight WAC Indoor title with 175 points followed by Utah State (104.5), Idaho (102), New Mexico State (63), UH (61.5), Nevada (55.5), Boise State (51), and Fresno State (49.5).

"I was cramping on my first jump a little bit. I felt it and knew I had to push through. My first jump ended up being 1cm over what I needed, I watched everyone's mark and tried to stay as together as I could and it all worked out. I didn't have much in me afterwards. In the finals I jumped on my first one and cramped, passed on the second and cramped again. I feel pretty good about how the day went. I like the runway, my training is going really well. I haven't had a US championship title since 2005 outdoor championships and that was my freshman year of college and actually then I was just 1 cm over the standard I needed. I wanted this so bad."

"It got off to a shaky start with a couple of the lower heights and I was in fourth place when the bar changed to 7'7". I knew I had to at least make that height to get on the team. I went ahead and made 7'8". A couple of other guys made it and I knew if I didn't make 7'8" I still may have not made the team because I had a couple other early misses. I knew I had to make 7'8", I made it on the first attempt and I feel really good about it. It was a great competition. I think it was the best competition ever for the USA championships. It was an honor to be a part of and especially to win. I am excited and I really feel that I can get a medal. The Russians have won a lot of things for a long time. Hopefully we can take it to the Russians. I've been training very hard. I had an injury (strained tendon on my jumping foot, just below the ankle) and this is only my second meet of the year. I hope I didn't re-hurt my foot, it's kind of tender right now and it isn't feeling too goo d."

"Today went different. Out of all the 12 championships this is definitely the most topsy turvy race I have ever done. With the altitude you can't just push, you have push and then rest. Once I've taken the lead I have never let it up. This is the first time that I let the lead up. I was frustrated that I took it out so slow. I told myself 'Ok, I'm going to take it,' and I pushed too hard and I had to slow down. It felt like my lungs were burning and I spent three weeks at altitude so I can only imagine how these other guys how bad they felt. This is my 43rd win overall, so it moves me into No. 2 all-time track and field national championship wins. This was my 12th win in indoor, which is the most by any athlete in any event in track and field history."

"This hands down was one of the best series ever. It felt great, the crowd was amazing, the ball was just flying. It felt amazing. (how it felt to open with the her best throw) Fantastic. You can never complain about opening up with your best throw ever. I was trying to focus on the things we have been working on in practice. It was mechanical. I was trying to hit the things that I have been working on, it was very step one, step two, step three. I guess I should do it like that all the time. (on her homecoming) My god parents are here and my uncle, I haven't seen them in years. It really is like coming home."

"This hit my outdoor personal record (PR) but indoor yes that is the closest I have ever come to it. I knew I was over it, I felt it. Maybe I got lazy at the end but I didn't feel like I touched the bar or anything so when it came down it shocked me. But I was happy to be able to get that much height over it. This is the best I have ever jumped this early in the season. My indoor PR last year was 195, this is by far the best. It's really exciting because I haven't PRed since I had my daughter, and she is two and a half now. This is huge for me. When I saw the bar fall, I was excited because I got that high, but it felt like everything had slipped through my fingers. That would have been a good mark for the Visa Series."

"I didn't know how I was going to feel with the altitude. I actually didn't feel anything after about five laps. I just wanted to have fun. I was running on the inside. I wanted to be able to keep an eye on who was going to make a move. I just wanted to win and make the team. I wanted to maintain the lead. I wanted to make sure I was going to be number one. I wanted to win and make the team. That is what I came here for."

"Coach might be mad at me I was supposed to wait five laps and then take off. I could just tell that everyone was putting on the breaks and I thought screw it I'm going to go. I had a really good workout on Tuesday so I had the confidence to continue. In a race situation you don't always know what to do so I just went with my gut. I never quite knew how far the gap was, I was just focused on myself. I had to stay in the moment each lap by lap. I know I have a good kick and as soon as I hit the last lap I knew I was going to give it a run. I didn't know what was going to happen but you have to be confident in yourself whether you win or lose."

"It means a lot. I am still fired up. This is the highest I have jumped in indoors in six years. I felt really good coming into the meet. (competition with the other gold medaler) We are actually really good friends, we helped each other out a lot. But a lot of time during competition I have too much to worry about than to think about other people. I was competing against the event really."

"This hit my outdoor personal record (PR) but indoor yes that is the closest I have ever come to it. I knew I was over it, I felt it. Maybe I got lazy at the end but I didn't feel like I touched the bar or anything so when it came down it shocked me. But I was happy to be able to get that much height over it. This is the best I have ever jumped this early in the season. My indoor PR last year was 195, this is by far the best. It's really exciting because I haven't PRed since I had my daughter, and she is two and a half now. This is huge for me. When I saw the bar fall, I was excited because I got that high, but it felt like everything had slipped through my fingers. That would have been a good mark for the Visa Series."
Bernard Lagat, men's 3000 meter winner
"I didn't know how I was going to feel with the altitude. I actually didn't feel anything after about five laps. I just wanted to have fun. I was running on the inside. I wanted to be able to keep an eye on who was going to make a move. I just wanted to win and make the team. I wanted to maintain the lead. I wanted to make sure I was going to be number one. I wanted to win and make the team. That is what I came here for."
Renee Metivier Baillie, Women's 3000 meter winner
"Coach might be mad at me I was supposed to wait five laps and then take off. I could just tell that everyone was putting on the breaks and I thought screw it I'm going to go. I had a really good workout on Tuesday so I had the confidence to continue. In a race situation you don't always know what to do so I just went with my gut. I never quite knew how far the gap was, I was just focused on myself. I had to stay in the moment each lap by lap. I know I have a good kick and as soon as I hit the last lap I knew I was going to give it a run. I didn't know what was going to happen but you have to be confident in yourself whether you win or lose."

"I had a lot of fun this year. I trained to throw far. I knew I was capable so I just came out here and threw. The tenth best throw ever. It was great."
Lawrence Willis, men's triple jump winner
"The competition was great. Jumping against the regining champion, I knew I had to put up a good mark. It's...I don't even know what to say. After taking a year off, with all the support from my family and friends, this just feels great."
