Running USA's 2011 State of the Sport - Part I: New "Core Runner" Profiles
National Running Survey shows educated, affluent, motivated, half-marathon loving population
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (June 19, 2011) - The 2011 National Runner Survey is a comprehensive study conducted every two years by Running USA. The National Runner Survey assesses the demographics, lifestyle, attitudes, habits and product preferences of the running population nationwide. Results from the National Runner Survey reflect "core runners", that is, active adult participants who tend to enter running events and train year-round.
Today's core runners are highly educated with 77.2% having earned a college diploma (national percent = 29.5%) and affluent with 72.9% reporting a household income of more than $75,000 (national average = 32.4%). Core runners are active participants who train year-round and report running / jogging an average of 213 days and logging nearly 1,269 miles per year. These runners are motivated to run in order to stay in shape (80.7%), stay healthy (77.4%), have fun (66.1%) and relieve stress (64.3%).
The National Runner Survey is distributed electronically to running event participants, running club members, specialty running shoe store visitors, subscribers to running publications and those who frequent the online running community.
Running USA worked closely with more than 60 organizations to help distribute the online survey to various constituency groups between the months of January through May of 2011. A total of 11,893 runners nationwide (53.8% female, 46.2% male) responded to the survey with an 86% rate of completion. Select results from the 2011 study are presented in this summary. World's Fastest Runners Ready to Compete in Inaugural B.A.A. 10K
Talented field features rematch of top three men's finishers from 2011 Boston Marathon; $30,000 prize purse
BOSTON - (June 15, 2011) - The Boston Athletic Association has released its field of top athletes for the inaugural B.A.A. 10K on Sunday, June 26. Highlighting the men's professional field is 2011 Boston Marathon champion Geoffrey Mutai, of Kenya. At the 115th Boston Marathon on April 18, the 29-year old Mutai ran the world's fastest marathon in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 2 seconds. His performance was 57 seconds faster than the world record time of 2:03:59 set by Haile Gebrselassie at the 2008 Berlin Marathon.
Also returning to Boston will be Moses Mosop of Kenya and Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia, the runner-up and third place finishers at Boston this year. Mosop is coming off a 25,000 meter and 30,000 meter world record performance on the track earlier this month, and has a personal best in the 10K of 28:04. Gebremariam brings his road racing expertise back to Boston, trying to better his own personal best of 27:41, set last year. Also in the men's field are Kenyans Simon Ndirangu (27:49) and Samuel Ndereba (28:01), as well as 2009 B.A.A. Half Marathon winner Martin Fagan of Ireland.
The women's field is led by 2011 Boston Marathon champion Caroline Kilel. The 30-year-old Kenyan returns to run her first race since winning the olive wreath in April. Joining her will be New Zealand's Kim Smith, a 2008 Olympian and national record holder at 5K. Smith, whose personal best at 10K is 31:23, led the first 18 miles of the 115th Boston Marathon before a torn muscle forced her to drop out. Now healthy and recovered, the Providence College graduate is coming off of a sixth place finish in the New York Mini 10K, in which she ran 32:32.
Australian national record holder and three-time Olympian Benita Willis has the fastest personal best in the field at 31:17. Gebremariam's wife, Werknesh Kidane, who was the 2003 World Cross Country Champion at 8K is also entered in the race.
"The elite field in the inaugural B.A.A. 10K is filled with accomplished athletes, many of whom have notched their fastest times here in Boston at B.A.A. events," said B.A.A. Executive Director Tom Grilk. "Though we've seen many of these runners compete before, we're anxious to see them compete in this distance, and how they'll do on this course while in direct competition with each other. There should be no shortage of excitement and fast times in our inaugural event."
The B.A.A. 10K includes a prize purse of $30,000 with $5000 awarded to the winners and equally distributed among the top male and female finishers. Race registration remains open at: www.baa.org
The 6.2 mile course is a scenic tour through Boston's Back Bay. Notable neighborhoods and attractions include the legendary Bull and Finch Pub, after which the television show "Cheers" was developed, the campus of Boston University and trendy Kenmore Square.

Monterey Peninsula Wins First-Ever "Outstanding Runner Friendly Community" Designation
Road Runners Club of America shines national spotlight on California's Central Coast for its runner friendly businesses, government, infrastructure and focus on fitness
CARMEL, Calif. - (June 16, 2011) - California's Monterey Peninsula has been named the "Outstanding Runner Friendly Community" by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) in a first-ever competition for the honor.
RRCA, the oldest and largest distance running organization in the U.S., established the competition to recognize communities that help improve the quality of life for residents and visitors through physical activity offerings such as running trails and infrastructure, events, easy access, clubs and organizations and more.
"Monterey Peninsula was a clear standout for this award," said Jean Knaack, RRCA Executive Director. She cited letters of support from the mayor of Monterey, the head of the local Convention & Visitors Bureau, State Parks Superintendent, local business owners and others. "The community is meeting and exceeding our criteria and has set a strong example for others to follow."
The comprehensive application was submitted by the Big Sur International Marathon, a long-time member of RRCA, with support from the local running club. Detailed responses to questions covered many aspects of the local community. "Infrastructure" elements included mention of a scenic 18-plus mile contiguous running path along the Monterey Bay coastline, state-of-the-art running tracks, miles of dirt and paved roads at trails on the former Ft. Ord military base, and others, all with easy access to parking, restrooms and water.
Local government was highlighted as being runner-friendly and encouraging organized runs and walks throughout the various Monterey Peninsula cities. The annual Big Sur International Marathon which takes place along California's Highway One drawing thousands of participants from throughout the world, involves coordination by several state and local agencies, and the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay travels through two popular Peninsula cities, Monterey and Pacific Grove. The local communities also are home to several smaller 10K runs, an annual triathlon, and numerous charity walks along the coastal trail.
"We have a great working relationship with all of our local municipalities," said Wally Kastner, race director for both Big Sur events. "The police and fire departments, city services and city management are all very supportive. They understand that our races bring great economic benefits to the area."
Monterey Mayor Chuck Della Sala highlighted the city's popular Sports Center complex and the recreation trail, noting, "The City of Monterey has built the infrastructure to support many running and athletic activities in our community," and added, "From restaurants to retail shops to businesses that offer places to gather, the Monterey Peninsula is truly a runner's paradise."
Knaack of RRCA, drew attention to "the excellent video" prepared for the application. The six-minute piece features scenes of the running trails in the area and interviews with several local business and government leaders providing on-air interviews. 2008 Olympic marathoner and Monterey Peninsula resident Blake Russell spoke of the variety of running trails and the temperate year-round weather in the area. The video can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LgEjt2yaOc
Other key elements of the Runner Friendly Community designation were local media support for the sport of running, partnerships with area hospitals to focus on health and wellness, a local scholarship fund to outstanding high school runners, and the nationally-recognized JUST RUN youth fitness program, developed by the Big Sur International Marathon and currently in place in schools throughout Monterey County and in 14 additional states throughout the U.S.
RRCA presented the first annual award to Monterey Peninsula at its national meeting held in Fredericksburg, Virginia in late May. Runner-up cities in the competition included Dallas and Wichita Falls, TX and Fredericksburg, VA.
Team USA Minnesota Athletes Give Back
Track team coaches in the Twin Cities schools or college programs this spring
MINNEAPOLIS - (June 19, 2011) - Seven Team USA Minnesota distance runners - Heather Kampf, Jason Lehmkuhle, Matt Gabrielson, Meghan Peyton, Chris Rombough, Jamie Cheever and Megan Hogan - served as assistant track coaches this spring at either high school or college programs in the Twin Cities.
Kampf is in her first year working as the girls' assistant distance coach at Apple Valley High School. "My team is far and away the most positive, close-knit and classy group of young women so coming to practice each day is such a joy," said Kampf. "I'm so proud of who they are as people and what they are accomplishing on the track. It is fun as a coach to see my athletes improving as the season progresses. It makes me feel like I must be doing something right.
"My favorite memory from the year was seeing all of them at the finish line of the USA Road Mile Championships in May in downtown Minneapolis," continued Kampf, who finished second in the race. "They were easy to spot, not only because they were all dressed in their Apple Valley gold team warm-ups, but because they had all picked up cow bells and inflatable clappers and were along the race course. I am quite certain no one had better fans out there."
Lehmkuhle and Gabrielson both are assistant coaches with the Edina High School varsity and junior varsity distance runners, with Lehmkuhle in his sixth year with the school and Gabrielson marking his fifth year. "I love helping - even if it's in a small way - kids become passionate about distance running," said Lehmkuhle, who is a nationally ranked marathoner. "I've now been at Edina long enough that I've watched kids come in as seventh graders and then grow, develop and go on to run in college."
At the college level, Peyton serves as the women's assistant track coach at Augsburg College and Rombough is a volunteer assistant coach with the men's distance and middle-distance squad at the University of Minnesota, with both in their first year of coaching. "Working with the Augsburg women is extremely rewarding," said Peyton. "Helping head coach Dennis Barker (who is also the coach of Team USA Minnesota) foster the girls' growth as both athletes and young women is one of the best feelings. I want to continue to help them grow for years to come and hopefully will inspire them along the way with my own running."
Rombough is coaching at his alma mater, having finished his collegiate career at the University of Minnesota in 2010. "I enjoy working with the men because I know that they are fully committed so it allows me to be fully committed to them," said Rombough. "Our men have been fighting for Big Ten Championships the last three years and to see the joy when we win and the heartbreak when we lose shows their full commitment."
Also helping out at the high school level are new Team USA Minnesota athletes
Cheever, who is assisting at Southwest High School in Minneapolis, and Hogan who has volunteered part-time to help out with the girls' distance team at Eden Prairie High School. "I work with the mid-distance and distance athletes at Southwest," said Cheever, who is a graduate of the high school. "I enjoy sharing my love for the sport and helping the high school students grow as both athletes and people."

Hardee Part of "Tsunami of Talent"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the decathletes line up at the start of the of the 100m next Thursday for the 2011 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, defending world champion Trey Hardee will not be among them. The 27-year-old Birmingham, Ala., native will cheer on Nike teammates Bryan Clay (Azusa Pacific 2002)and Ashton Eaton from the sidelines as they chase after a U.S. title and a ticket to August’s World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
But Hardee is not out of the picture; his spot on Team USA is already secure. Hardee’s victory in Berlin two years ago gives him an automatic bye into this year’s World Championships. The only thing he must do to claim this spot is enter and start one event at the USA Outdoors. For Hardee though, not doing the decathlon will be a new experience.
“I‘ve never been to USA Outdoors without doing the decathlon before,” Hardee said. “I’m going to see all the decathletes out there doing their thing and getting to hang out with one another and compete, and I’m probably going to miss it a little bit.”
For now, Hardee plans to enter the open long jump and hurdle events. And although Hardee may miss some aspects of the grueling two-day, 10-event decathlon, there are definite advantages to the bye.
“A decathlon kind of takes a lot out of you,” Hardee said. “Instead of pretty much setting myself back in training, we’re going to use the competition as training and get to compete against some of the best long jumpers in the world and the best hurdlers in the world.”
Since Hardee has already qualified, the U.S. has the opportunity to send four decathletes, instead of the usual three, to Daegu. With a deep decathlon field at next week’s championship, competition should be fierce for the top three places.
“Usually it kind of happens in waves, but I think right now we have a tsunami of talent in America,” Hardee said.
But Hardee is excited at the prospect of sending an extra decathlete to the world championships.
“The more the merrier,” Hardee said. “The more people we have over there, the more support we all have, the more encouragement we’re going to receive from one another.”
“I think that’s another interesting part of [the decathlon] where you don’t see that a lot with sprinters, and you don’t really see it a lot in distance running. But with us, I don’t think I’ve ever been at a meet where I was competing against Bryan and I didn’t hear him encourage me before a jump or a throw, and the same goes for Ashton. “
The camaraderie among decathletes is just one of many things Hardee loves about the event. As for negatives, he couldn’t name one.
“I don’t really know if there is a bad part about it,” Hardee said. “I’ve been doing this for eight years now, and I think if you’d asked me in the first couple of years, I would have said the training is the hardest part of the doing the decathlon. Then the years after, it probably would have been, ‘Man, the 1,500m just stinks.’ But now I’m at the point where it’s just, this is what I do for a living. I’d probably be looking for another job if there was something I didn’t like.”
After not competing in a decathlon last outdoor season, Hardee is recharged and ready to defend his title as world champion.
“I’ve been healthy all year and been able to train, so I haven’t lost any ground,” Hardee said. “I think if things keep going the way they are, I anticipate having a couple of [individual event] PR’s and hopefully having a personal record [in the decathlon] and staying on top of the podium.”

Florida State’s Men Claims Their First John McDonnell Program of the Year Acclaim
Florida State’s Men Claims Their First John McDonnell Program of the Year Acclaim
Seminoles’ second-place NCAA outdoor team finish secured academic-year performance award
June 14, 2011
NEW ORLEANS – The Florida State men’s program is the winner of the USTFCCCA’s John McDonnell Program of the Year award for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Seminoles were nation’s runner up in the fall at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships and at the past weekend’s outdoor track & field championships. The USTFCCCA Program of the Year award, now in its third year of existence, is given to an institution that had the best combined team finishes in each of the NCAA’s cross country/track & field sports in a given academic year.
Bob Braman’s squad also finished fifth at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the winter. FSU was the only program in the country to record top-five national finishes at each of the championships in the year.
"We are really excited. It was a goal of our team at the beginning of the year - like it is every year - to be the best overall program,” said Braman. “It is really difficult when you have 12 scholarships to split up between cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and track has 21 events. So it's very difficult to balance it out and most universities don't try. They try to load up in one or the other. To receive this honor really means a lot to us. We won by a large margin and I am just so extraordinarily proud of our young men in all three sports."
The Seminole harriers were ranked by the nation’s coaches as the No. 10 team in the country heading into the cross country national championships in the fall, but shocked the field by finishing as the nation’s runner up with a tightly-packed top five, led by senior Ciaran O'Lionaird (18th, 30:14) and junior Michael Fout (28th, 30:21). Only 42 seconds separated the top five Seminoles, who shattered the program's previous best finish of eighth, set back in 1981.
In March, Florida State took fifth at the indoor track & field national championships with 30 points. Ngoni Makusha would win the long jump crown and Maurice Mitchell claimed second-place finishes in both the 60 and 200 meters.
Last weekend, at the NCAA’s outdoor track & field championships, the Seminoles came just one point from a national team title, scoring 54 points to three-time champ Texas A&M.
FSU captured four event national titles, two of which came from Makusha who claimed the 100-meter title in a collegiate- and meet-record 9.89 and the long jump title with a best of 27-6¾ (8.40m). Makusha won a share of a third national crown in the weekend as a member of FSU’s 4x100-relay squad. Makusha was on the end of what could be called an “immaculate baton pass” from leadoff leg Kemar Hyman. Hyman handed the baton to Makusha, but it was flipped in the air by the receiver and was caught by Hyman from mid-air. Hyman still had enough time to re-pass the baton to Makusha before the end of the exchange zone. Makusha would hand to Mitchell who handed it to Brandon Byram who would take the baton to the tape for the victory. Mitchell would also later win the 200 meters in a wind-aided 19.99.
Florida State’s Men Claims Their First John McDonnell Program of the Year Acclaimas the only other squad to record top-ten finishes at each of the NCAA’s championships this year. With 18½ points (4 XC, =8 ITF, 6 OTF), the Cardinal trailied only Florida State’s nine. Stanford also finished second in the award’s standings in 2008-2009.
BYU recorded their first top-three finish in the history of the award in scoring 29 points (18 XC, 3 ITF, 8 OTF).
Two-time defending winner of the award Oregon placed eighth in this year’s standings.
A total of 15 programs recorded team finishes at each of the year’s NCAA championships.
The John McDonnell Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former Arkansas head coach John McDonnell. McDonnell’s Arkansas teams won a combined 40 National Championships and finished in the top ten in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field in 24 of his 36 seasons in Fayetteville. Five of his teams won the NCAA Triple Crown.

Reid, Sutej Claim National Women’s Athlete of the Year Titles in Division I
June 17, 2011
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced that Villanova’s Sheila Reid and Arkansas’ Tina Sutej were the association’s National Women’s Athletes of the Year for the 2011 NCAA Division I outdoor track & field season as voted by the nation’s coaches. Reid became the first woman in NCAA D-I history to win national outdoor crowns at both 1500 and 5000 meters while Sutej claimed the collegiate record in the pole vault.
NATIONAL WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Sheila Reid, Villanova
Reid, a junior from Newmarket, Ontario, became the first woman in NCAA Division I history to win both 1500- and 5000-meter titles at a single NCAA championship this outdoor season. At the national championships, Reid clocked a personal-best 15:37.57 in the 5000 meters, which included a 64.54-second final lap to score her first title of the weekend. On the final day of the championship meet, Reid captured top honors in the 1500 meters with a winning time of 4:14.57, closing from third to first in the final lap with a 62.93-second split.
Reid also claimed BIG EAST crowns in both the 1500 meters and the 5000 meters during the outdoor season.
Overall in 2010-2011, Reid won the NCAA cross country individual title, leading the Wildcats to a second-straight NCAA team crown, and was named the USTFCCCA’s National Athlete of the Year for the season. At the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Reid anchored Villanova to an NCAA championship in the distance medley relay and was the nation’s runner-up in the 3000 meters.
Past Winners:
2011: Sheila Reid, Villanova
2010: Lisa Koll, Iowa State
2009: Jenny Barringer, Colorado
2008: Sally Kipyego, Texas Tech

2006: Virginia Powell, Southern California
NATIONAL WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Tina Sutej, Arkansas

Sutej, who also reset the indoor collegiate record earlier in 2011, was named the SEC Field Athlete of the Year.
At the NCAA Championships, Sutej equaled the NCAA-meet record with a clearance of 14-7¼ (4.45m), but finished second to Oregon’s Melissa Gergel by virtue of misses.
Sutej is only the fourth women in collegiate history to clear the 15-foot barrier. In the 2011 outdoor season, Sutej cleared more than 14-6 (4.42m) on five occasions and, before the NCAA Championships, had won 13-straight competitions combining the indoor and outdoor seasons.

For the Ducks, A Third-Straight Terry Crawford Women’s Program of the Year Nod
Oregon claimed second-straight NCAA indoor crown, was runner-up
June 15, 2011
NEW ORLEANS – The women’s program at the University of Oregon is the winner of the USTFCCCA’s Terry Crawford Program of the Year award for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Ducks, who have been the top-billed team in the program-wide competition for a third-straight year, won their second-consecutive NCAA Indoor Track & Field national team title in March, preceding a runner-up showing at the latest NCAA outdoor meet last weekend. The USTFCCCA Program of the Year award, now in its third year of existence, is given to an institution that had the best combined team finishes in each of the NCAA’s cross country/track & field sports in a given academic year.
The track & field finishes are combined with Oregon’s 12th-place NCAA cross country finish from the fall, giving the Ducks and the program’s director Vin Lananna 15 points -- the best score of the competition.
In March, Oregon (67) produced a 29-point victory over runner-up Texas (38) for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field team championship. It was the largest margin of victory for a team since 1998 as the Ducks would claim three event titles. Sophomore Jordan Hasay lit up the track by winning national crowns in the mile and 3000 meters. Brianne Theisen broke her own collegiate record in winning the pentathlon with 4,540 points.
At the outdoor meet, the Ducks finished second with 45 points to three-time champ Texas A&M’s 49. Sophomore Anne Kesselring claimed the NCAA crown at 800 meters (2:02.15), and senior Melissa Gergel produced top-honors in the pole vault, equaling the championship record with a clear of 14-7¼ (4.45m).
In the fall, Hasay helped the Ducks to a 12th-place team finish at the national cross country championships. Hasay placed third overall in the six-kilometer race, the best finish by a Duck since 1991.
Arizona took second in the overall standings with 23½ points (11 XC, =7 ITF, 5 OTF), notching the best finish in their program’s history and improving from an eighth-place finish a year ago.
Cross country two-time NCAA team champion Villanova placed third overall in the Program of the Year standings with 24½ points. The Wildcats added a 12th-place indoor finish and 11th-place outdoor showing to their cross country crown.
A total of 18 programs scored at each of the NCAA’s championships in 2010-2011; however, none of the squads recorded top-ten finishes in each of the three meets.
The Terry Crawford Women’s Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former Cal Poly head coach Terry Crawford. Crawford has won five NCAA National Championships, and over 20 Conference Championships. Her 1986 Texas squad remains as the only NCAA women’s program to ever win the Triple Crown (cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field titles).
The NCAA Division I Program of the Year Awards are awarded annually to the most outstanding cross country/track & field programs. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division I Championships.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Division I Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
