Preseason Regional Rankings for Division III Cross Country Announced

Preseason Regional Rankings for Division III Cross Country Announced
August 27, 2013

NEW ORLEANS - With the 2013 Division III season on the proverbial starting line awaiting the starter’s gun, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released Tuesday the preseason 2013 DIII Regional Rankings.

Many of the regional champion teams from a year ago will once again enter as their region’s preseason favorites for the upcoming season, which officially kicks off Friday, August 30. The defending women’s champ is the preseason No. 1 in seven of the eight regions, while five of the men’s champions will start 2013 the same way they finished 2012: on top.

The National Coaches Poll for the preseason will be revealed Wednesday.

Regional Rankings Summary PDF | Division III XC Rankings Central

Defending NCAA DIII men’s team champion North Central (Ill.) of the Midwest Region is chief among the 2012 regional champs returning as 2013 preseason favorites in a region that features two of last year’s top five national teams in UW-La Crosse (fourth) and Washington (Mo.) (fifth).

National runners-up Calvin and Haverford will start 2013 atop the preseason rankings in the Great Lakes and Mideast regions, respectively. Also reprising their positions atop their regions are NYU (Atlantic Region) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (West).

A trio of teams overtook — at least in the eyes of the rankers — their regions’ top positions: Bowdoin (New England, runner-up at 2012 regionals), Central (Iowa) ( Central Region, runner-up in 2012), and Emory (South/Southeast, fifth in 2012).

Defending women’s DIII team champion Johns Hopkins of the Mideast Region is the most prominent of seven regional champion teams from 2012 that will begin 2012 as preseason favorites. Only Oberlin (Great Lakes Region, runner-up at 2012 regionals) was able to usurp its region’s defending champ.

National runner-up Wartburg (Central Region), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (West) and UW-Eau Claire (Midwest) will all begin as preseason regional favorites after claiming regional crowns and top-five national finishes in 2012.

MIT (New England), St. Lawrence (Atlantic Region) and Trinity (Texas) are also back at No. 1 in their respective regions after claiming titles a year ago.

NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held on Saturday, November 16.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by either a single member coach or by polling the region’s coaches (each region varies).]
