SEATTLE - The stage is set for an outstanding Saturday of track and field action in the Dempsey, as the first day of the UW Invitational delivered a number highlights this evening. The bulk of the races and field events await tomorrow when action begins bright and early at 8:40 a.m
First up today was the multi-events, with the women completing the pentathlon over several hours today, and the men finishing up four of seven events in the heptathlon. Two-time U.S. Olympian Sharon Day rolled to another tremendous effort, as she won the pentathlon with a final tally of 4,462 points, the best mark in the U.S. thus far in 2013. Sophomore Jaleecia Roland and junior Shelby Williams were 15th and 16th out of 30 finishers, with Roland scoring 3,357 points and Williams netting 3,350.

The 200-meter dash was the first open track event of the evening, and freshman Quadelle Satterwhite of Tacoma continued to show a ton of promise, as he placed third out of the 36 entries in a time of 21.94 seconds.

The first distance medley relays of the Dempsey season were held tonight, with both Husky teams looking strong led by some new faces. Freshman Maddie Meyers anchored the women's DMR to a fourth-place finish in a time of 11:25.72, just missing the Husky top-10 list by .05 seconds. Sophomore Joelle Amaral led off then passed to sophomore Gianna Woodruff, who split 55-seconds for the 400. Sophomore Baylee Mires, the 800m leg on UW's championship team last season, ran a 2:08 leg for the Huskies tonight to pass to Meyers, who closed in about 4:43 for the final 1,600-meters.

The men's DMR was up next, and led off with junior Brad Whitley, who last year was the 800m leg on the fastest DMR in UW history. Whitley passed to freshman Derrick Jones for the short leg, who gave to Kyle Blume, and then Gareth Gilna took the baton to finish. Two Oregon teams led most of the way, but Gilna tracked down one Duck on the final lap and nearly caught the second, winding up second in 9:49.25.
