Potts Indoor Invitational Meet Information and Schedule

The University of Colorado track and field teams start an exciting era as the 2012 season marks the first year as a member of the Pac-12 Conference (outdoor) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (indoor). The Buffs start the season by hosting the Potts Indoor Invitational on January 19-21 at Balch Fieldhouse. It is CU's only home meet of the indoor campaign. The Buffs will host a pair of outdoor meets, the Potts Outdoor Invitational, March 16-17, and the Colorado Invitational, April 13-14, at Potts Field.

DISTANCE

Colorado has made a name for itself as a distance school under the direction of head coach Mark Wetmore and assistant coach Heather Burroughs. The Buffs are fresh off winning the inaugural Pac-12 Conference Cross Country Championships (men and women). The men also placed third at the NCAA Cross Country Championships while the women were 11th overall.

The men have a strong core group that will lead the team in seniors Richard Medina (Grand Junction HS, CO), Christian Thompson (Candor HS, NY) and Andy Wacker (Pinecrest HS, Pinehurst, NC), as well as junior Joe Bosshard (Crested Butte Academy, CO). Bosshard was a world champion logroller for the 6 and under division. Medina is a two-time All-American, earning the honor in 2010 in the 5k and in 2011 on the cross country course. Wacker has been an All-American on the cross country course twice (2010 and 2011) and Bosshard is a five-time All-American, twice in cross country and three times on the track. He was sixth in the 10k in 2010 and in 2011 was a second team selection in the 5k (13th). He was eighth in the 10k for first team honors in 2011.

Thompson redshirted the 2011 outdoor season and looks to make his mark on the steeplechase, his signature event, in his final season of eligibility. Thomson competed at the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase, finishing 20th overall in 2009. He will have some help from junior Aric Van Halen, who placed fourth at the Big 12 Championship in 2011, and junior Jonny Stevens who was ninth at the conference meet.

NCAA and USATF Steeplechase Champion Emma Coburn will lead the Buffs in her final season. She earned All-American honors in 2011 in the indoor mile, placing eighth overall, and won the 2011 NCAA Steeplechase crown. In total she has four All-American honors to her name, including one from this past cross country season. She will be joined by junior Shalaya Kipp, who has earned four All-American honors (two in cross country and two in the steeplechase). Kipp placed third in the steeplechase in 2011.

Junior Camille Logan scored for CU in the 10k at the final Big 12 Outdoor meet, placing sixth overall. Jessica Pixler, will return for her final season of eligibility during the outdoor season. She has a great deal of range, competing at a high level in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000 and will play a big part in the Buffs' outdoor success.

MIDDLE DISTANCE

Coaches Wetmore and Burroughs have a talented group of middle distance runners as well. Junior Matthew Biegner and senior Steven Kasica once again will lead the men's group. Both have shown a great deal of improvement through the years. Kasica has become one of CU's top 800-meter performers, currently ranking fourth on the indoor list and 10th outdoors.

The women also look quite strong in the middle distances. Junior Elizabeth Tremblay ranks second on Colorado's indoor 800-meter performers list and is third on the outdoor 800 list. She was second at the Big 12 Indoor Championships (800 meters) and placed third at the outdoor meet. Senior Katie Cumming is strong in the mile and the 1,500 and will look to pick up a lot of points for CU in those events. Junior Staci Foster helped CU last season during the indoor season, placing seventh at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.

JUMPS/COMBINED EVENTS

Assistant coach Lindsey Malone is in her fifth year at the helm of the combined events and jumps program. Senior Adam Salzmann, one of her first two recruits at CU, will return for his final season, competing only in the decathlon during the outdoor campaign. Senior Eddie Taylor will also be in his final season, although he has both indoor and outdoor seasons to compete.

Senior Katie Dreher and redshirt juniors Brianne Beemer and Alyssa Frank will lead the women. All three have been showing a great deal of improvement over the last few years and are on the cusp of scoring for CU. Beemer earned All-Big 12 honors in 2010, finishing seventh in the pentathlon and heptathlon and will look to add some Pac-12 honors to the list this spring.

SPRINTS/HURDLES

Assistant coach Drew Morano is in his third season at the helm of the Buffalo sprinters and has a group of athletes that are led by juniors Joe Morris and Kyle MacIntosh. Morris was a second-team All-American in the indoor 60, finishing ninth at the NCAA Championships. MacIntosh has been part of CU's relays which have done quite well in recent years. He will look to score his first points individually for the Buffs. Matthew Butcher, a senior transfer from Oregon, could make an immediate impact for CU. He was an All-American in 2010, helping the Ducks' 4x400-meter relay to a sixth-place finish at the indoor championships.

The women are very young with six freshmen and two sophomores. Amber Rozier is the lone senior and will be expected to lead the young group. Lindsey Hubbard and Rachael Opgenorth are the two sophomores and their experience will be valuable as they help Rozier lead the freshman class.

THROWS

Casey Malone, a 2004 and 2008 Olympian and two-time USA Discus Champion, will lead the Buff throwers for the 12th season. Senior Niklas Cederstrom, juniors Dane Chobanian and Cameron Hutchins and sophomore Alex Kizirian are all looking to have breakout seasons for the Buffs this spring. They have made huge improvements during the offseason and hope to have that momentum carry into the 2012 campaign.

The women will be led by junior Emily Hunsucker, who became the second best CU performer in the hammer throw and the fourth best CU performer in the weight throw last season. Senior Kirsten Wicks and sophomores Kajsa Bank, Adrienne Lettow and Kellie Lind will help Hunsucker build the throws program this season.

THE MEET SCHEDULE

CU officially kicks off the indoor season at the Potts Indoor Invitational and will stay on the Front Range for most of the indoor season. A group of athletes will compete at a pair of meets at the University of Washington and some will compete at the New Mexico Classic.

Washington will host the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Seattle, Wash., February 24-25. CU joined the MPSF as the Pac-12 does not host an indoor championship for track and field. The following weekend CU will send athletes to a variety of last chance meets to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship, March 9-10, in Boise, Idaho.

As soon as the indoor season is over, the Buffs will switch gears to the outdoor campaign, hosting their first of two meets at Potts Field, March 16-17, the Potts Invitational. The second home meet is the Colorado Invitational, April 13-14.

As usual CU will compete at several meets along the Front Range in Fort Collins, Colo. and at the Air Force Academy. The Buffs won't just stay regional as several athletes will have the opportunity to compete at a pair of meets at Stanford and the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays.

Oregon will host the inaugural Pac-12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The combined events portion of the meet will be contested May 5-6, while all other event areas will compete May 12-13. Texas will host the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, May 25-26, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship is June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa, with Drake University hosting the championships. The U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials will be hosted by UO June 22-July 1.
