Team USA takes Great North City Games trophy

NEWCASTLE – U.S. athletes won seven out of ten events Saturday as Team USA took the team trophy, defeating host Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Great North City Games in Newcastle, England.

The exhibition “street games” track meet featured the United States versus Great Britain and Northern Ireland in select track and field events.

Team USA took the first two running events of the day as Bernard Lagat won the men’s 1 mile in 4:06.01 and Dawn Harper (UCLA 2006)took the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.73.

The host team took the next three events as Hannah England took the women’s mile in 4:39.49 and Mo Farah won the men’s 2 mile in 8:37.72, followed by Harry Aikines-Aryeetey clocking 10.27 to win the men’s 100m.

With five events remaining, Carmelita Jeter (Bishop Montgomery HS, Torrance, CA 1998; CSU Dominiguez Hills 2003)put Team USA back on the winning track, taking the women's 150m in a world best of 16.50, while Becky Holliday added to the team tally, winning the women’s pole vault with a height of 4.27m/14’-0”.

Going in to the final three events, Team USA steadily pulled away as Walter Dix took the men's 150m in a time of 14.65 and Jason Richardson won the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.16, while Jeremy Hicks jumped 7.84 m/25' 8¾" to win the long jump.
