Olympic and World Championships medalist Darvis "Doc" Patton went to bed one night, and when he woke up the next day, he was old. Doc didn't look any different, didn't feel any different, and he certainly didn't slow down, but he suddenly became known to the press as a veteran athlete, experienced, the elder statesman, or a dozen other euphemisms for old.
"I was thinking, ‘When did I become the old person?' But I love it. You can say old or experienced, but I don't feel it, and if you were looking at my times you wouldn't know that I'm 33," Patton said. "As long as I am having a good time and competing at a high level and having fun, I'm going to keep going."
In May of last year, Doc was running at a meet in Jamaica when he felt a nagging sports hernia flair up that derailed the rest of his season. Some may have gotten the false impression that his days on the track were done, but Doc said, "Retiring never came in my mind. That wasn't how I wanted to go out. I had more motivation to come back than to quit."
After going through surgery to correct the issue that had been troubling him since 2006, and building back through rehab, Doc is back and feeling stronger, faster and fresher than before his injury. While not much has changed on the track since his last full season, there has been a world of change in Doc's life off the track. Doc and his wife Crystal, had a baby girl, Dakota, in June of 2009, and now Doc is facing his first full season as a father.
"It's going to be tough when I have to leave. No matter how manly you are, having two women crying when you leave will break you down," Patton admits. "But Dakota's to the point that she'll point at me when she sees me on TV, and she'll get to watch the meets from home."
But once Doc steps on the track, or has he commonly refers to it as "the office," he is all business and his thoughts are singularly focused on the task at hand. "The track is where I do my work. I get excited because it is me versus seven other people, and it is my hard work versus theirs," Doc said.
On Saturday, when Doc steps on the track of Franklin Field for USA vs. the World, he may not be thinking of where he came from in the past year, how many years he has been competing or how his life has changed since his last full season, but knowing what he's come back from gives his fans and his support team that much more to cheer for.
"Penn is always gonna be special to me," Doc admits."The whole atmosphere and energy make it fun to compete. If that doesn't get you excited, nothing will."

World's #1 sprinters set for epic battles against the World
PHILADELPHIA - With the #1 athletes in the world from the 100m through the 400m - including 2010's dominant stars Allyson Felix (LA Baptist HS) and Carmelita Jeter (Bishop Montgomery HS, Torrance 1998; CS Dominguez Hills 2003) - Team USA is ready to set the track ablaze at the 12th edition of USA vs. the World at the 117th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., at Franklin Field this Saturday.
USA vs. the World serves as the first event of the 2011 Outdoor Visa Championship Series, and will be televised on Saturday, April 30, from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN2. Tickets are still available for this year's event at www.ThePennRelays.com.
Settling the score in the Women's Sprint Medley Relay
The first event of Saturday's USA vs. the World line-up will bring out the best of the women's USA/Jamaica rivalry. Team USA claimed victories the first three years of the sprint medley; however, Team Jamaica has answered with three wins in-a-row. Both teams are bringing their bests to break the series tie.
Team USA newest 2-lap star is likely to anchor, as Phoebe Wright return to Franklin Field for the first time as a professional. The Tennessee native recently won her first USA Indoor Championship and ran on six winning Penn Relays teams during her college career at the University of Tennessee. Team Jamaica is bringing its best anchor as well, with Kenia Sinclair in the relay pool, it is likely she will run the 800m leg for the 4th year in a row. Her past two year's splits have been 1:57.4 and 1:57.5.
With the depth of talent on the women's side for both Team USA and Jamaica, there are many options for the 200/400m legs. Teams from the relay line-ups will not be finalized until Friday night's technical meeting. Teams from Russian, Canada and Nigeria will also bring their best to the track.
World's best in Visa Women's 4x100
Team USA looks to extend it's six-year winning streak in the Visa Women's 4x100m, bringing squads with years of experience both in the collegiate portion of the Penn Relays and the USA vs. the World competition. Allyson Felix has run on the last four winning USA vs. The World 4x100 relay teams, and her teammate of the past two years, Carmelita Jeter returns as well. Jeter has been ranked t#1 in the 100m by Track & Field News for the past two years, and is the current world leader (10.99) as the only female athlete to run under 11-seconds this year. While Felix is better known for her talent in the 200/400m, and ended the 2010 season ranked #1 in the world in both events, she also won the USA Outdoor Championships for 100m, and ended the year as the #6 short sprinter in the U.S.
Lauryn Williams, Bianca Knight and Marshavet Meyers are also in the pool, and the trio has already joined together this year running a world leader in the 4x100m at the Texas Relays in 42.45. Potential relay members also include 2008 USA 100m Champion Muna Lee and 2011 USA Indoor 60m Champion Alexandria Anderson.
Team Jamaica's roster may include the reigning Olympic and World Champion,Shelly-Ann Fraser and Olympic medalists Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson. Teams from Germany, Brazil, the Bahamas and a Caribbean All-Stars quartet will also be on hand to attempt their first win of the series.
Team USA seeks gold in Nike Women's 4x400m
The Nike Women's 4x400m is Team USA's most dominant event of the series. The Americans have won all but one of the 11 contests, and looks to extend the streak. Felix and Sanya Richards-Ross have both run on the winning team four times. Felix has four world or Olympic relay titles to her name, and Richards-Ross boasts five, as well as the 2009 world 400m title.. Felix opened her 2011 season with winning relays at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays, while Richards-Ross returned to the track after her injury-plagued 2010 season with marks of 52.00 for 400m and 23.06 for 200m.
2011 USA Indoor Champion Natasha Hastings has an impressive relay resume of gold-medal wins of the Olympic, World Indoor, World Outdoor and World Junior 4x400m teams. In 2009 she proved that barefoot or not, she could deliver a winning performance after she lost a spike in the exchange zone.
Other available relay members include the current world leader for 400m, Francena McCorory, who set an early-season PR at the Florida Relays in 50.50, and Debbie Dunn, the 2010 World Indoor and USA Outdoor champion.
Team Jamaica is bringing a stellar line-up to Franklin Field. The reigning Olympic and World-Champion 400m hurdler Melaine Walker will be joined by fellow hurdler Kaliese Spencer who ended 2010 ranked #2 in the world.
Relay line-ups will be decided at Friday night's technical meeting and posted on www.VisaChampionshipSeries.com.

Champions Keflezighi, Gebremariam, Kiplagat Announced on ING New York City Marathon 2011 Opening Day
Eight-time Olympic speed-skating medalist Apolo Anton Ohno will make his marathon debut in New York on Sunday, November 6; record number of 140,000 applications received; economic impact of last year's race announced at $340 million
NEW YORK - (April 27, 2011) - On ING New York City Marathon Opening Day 2011, New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg announced the return of a trio of race champions on the broadcast of NYRR Live from Columbus Circle.
Headlining the field on Sunday, November 6, will be 2010 winners Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia and Edna Kiplagat of Kenya and 2009 champion Meb Keflezighi of the United States.
Keflezighi, the first American to win the race since Alberto Salazar in 1982, was joined by three-time U.S. Olympian Jen Rhines and eight-time Olympic speed skating medalist Apolo Anton Ohno on the NYRR Live half-hour show hosted by Today Show personality Al Roker, veteran WNBC sportscaster Bruce Beck and WNBC reporter Cat Greenleaf. Both Rhines and Ohno were also announced by Wittenberg for this year's race.
Seen on tv.nyrr.org, NYRR Live was broadcast just steps from the famed marathon course and featured a special drawing of entrants for the race, along with prizes and giveaways to the live audience of several hundred. NYRR officials anticipate a race-record 140,000 applicants, with a record 90,000 in the drawing for about 45,000 starting spots. At the end of the show, entrants will learn of their acceptance status on the tv.nyrr.org website.
The findings of a NYRR study based on a survey of more than 1,000 participants from last year's race indicates a total economic impact of approximately $340 million for New York City, Wittenberg also announced. This represents a 25-percent jump since the last study, done in 2006, and was accompanied by a growth in the charity program that raised more than $30 million in 2010.
"Opening day, our launch to marathon season, is the starting line for our extended marathon family of professionals like Meb, Gebre, Edna and Jen, our celebrity stars like Apolo, all the runners from around the country and the world who have secured coveted spots in the race, and their friends, family, and fans, who are now all on the road to the finish at the greatest day in running, the ING New York City Marathon," said Wittenberg.
Keflezighi, 35, of Mammoth Lakes, CA, is a New York favorite who will be running the race for the seventh time and has showed remarkable consistency, with five top-10 finishes including his historic triumph in 2009 and last year's sixth-place finish as the top American. He'll get extra attention this year, as he's looking to run both New York and the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston in January 2012.
"Marathons are always challenging, but I'm challenging myself further with my goal to run both the ING New York City Marathon 2011 and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials," said Keflezighi. "This timing and challenge is very similar to 2004, when I won the silver medal at the Olympic Games and was the runner-up in the ING New York City Marathon 70 days later. This experience gives me, Coach Bob Larsen, and the rest of my team the confidence to pursue the goal of winning the ING New York City Marathon again, and making a third U.S. Olympic team."
Keflezighi will match up against the defending champion, Gebremariam, 26, of Ethiopia. Since winning the ING New York City Marathon in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 14 seconds, Gebremariam has runner-up at the NYC Half in March in a time of 1:00:25 and third at the Boston Marathon last week in a time of 2:04:53.
Ohno, 28, of Seattle, is the most decorated USA Winter Olympian of all-time, having skated his way to two gold, two silver and four bronze short-track speed skating medals. He has already demonstrated his excellence off his skates by winning the reality TV show "Dancing with the Stars" in 2007, but running his first 26.2-mile race will be by far one of his biggest career challenges.
"Running a marathon is something that I've never done, and I am super excited to take on this incredible challenge," said Ohno, who took up the challenge by his fellow Subway® enthusiast Jared Fogle, who finished last year's ING New York City Marathon. "I hope my journey can serve as an inspiration for others to meet their health goals, get their nutrition in order, and ultimately make smarter lifestyle choices."
Kiplagat, 31, of Kenya, continued her success after her victory, taking second at the NYC Half in March in 1:09:00. She finished third at the Virgin London Marathon last week, running 2:20:46, a personal record.
Rhines, 36, of Mammoth Lakes, CA, is coming off a five-year marathon hiatus after finishing fourth in the Rome Marathon on March 26, 2006. She competed in the 2004 Olympic Marathon, but has recently focused on shorter distances, including the 5000 meters, which she ran in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Rhines has already won two national championships this year, claiming the half-marathon crown in January and the 15K title last month.
"It is with great excitement and anticipation that I return to the streets of New York this fall," said Rhines, who last ran New York in 2005. "My training this year shows me that I am stronger than ever, and I will be ready to reach a new personal best. I can't wait to be fighting for a place on the podium this November!"
The premier event of New York Road Runners, the ING New York City Marathon is one of the world's great road races, drawing some 140,000 applicants. The race attracts many world class professional athletes, not only for the $800,000 in prize money, but also for the chance to excel in the media capital of the world before two million cheering spectators and a worldwide broadcast reach of 330 million. As any one of the more than 875,000 past participants will attest, crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the great thrills of a lifetime. Saucony Launches "Find Your Strong" Multi-Media Global Brand Campaign
New platform, led by the brand's first-ever national TV ad, inspires and engages consumers to find their personal "strong" through running
LEXINGTON, Mass. - Signaling a continued expansion of its marketing efforts, Saucony, Inc., a leading global supplier of performance athletic footwear and apparel, has announced its new multi-media global brand campaign entitled Find Your Strong.
The campaign, the brand's largest marketing effort to-date, inspires consumers to find their personal "strong" through running. The new platform encompasses multiple touch points, including an immersive digital and social media experience and the brand's first-ever national television commercial. The TV spot broke nationally on Wednesday night, April 27, 2011 on ESPN.
"As runners, we know that people run for intensely personal reasons," said Chris Lindner, chief marketing officer for Saucony. "Whether in honor of a relative, for a charity or medal, or for ourselves, running inspires the human spirit, making us stronger. At the core, this campaign is about just that; it's where and how we train and the people and moments that strengthen us. Ultimately, we're tapping into this emotional connection to create a dialog that we hope will inspire even more people to run."
"The new campaign continues to amplify our brand mission to inspire runners every day. As we confidently emerge as a global athletic brand, we too are finding our 'strong'. Our first national television spot marks a pivotal point for Saucony, signaling a continued expansion of our marketing efforts to further drive brand awareness. The timing couldn't be better as the Kinvara 2, the campaign's featured product, was recently named Best Buy by Runner's World in their annual Summer Shoe Guide," added Lindner.
The new campaign, developed by Mechanica of Newburyport, Massachusetts, includes the following elements:
TELEVISION
The campaign's new TV spot entitled "What is Strong?" was produced by the Emmy Award-winning creative production company Shilo, and directed by Andre Stringer. Filmed at various locations in California's Marin Headlands, the spot depicts a composition of runners finding their "strong" as they run on roads, trails, tracks and playing fields. The diversity of runners featured conveys the premise that finding one's "strong" is an intensely personal experience.
To view all of the "What is Strong?" TV spots, go to: http://community.saucony.com/index.php?page=PressRoom&id=35
DIGITAL
Because runners are both personally motivated and passionately united, "What Is Strong?" the campaign's online destination, allows runners to honor the people and moments that inspire them while drawing inspiration from the "strong" of others. The innovative digital application creates a visual depiction of user-generated "strongs," highlighting those most shared by the community. Additionally, users can share their personal "strongs" through social media channels and personalized tee shirts.
To coincide with the launch of the TV spot, saucony.com/strong went live on Wednesday, April 27th. Boston-based Beam Interactive developed the campaign's digital platform.
PRINT
The national and regional print campaign, shot by famed sports photographer John Huet, was launched this month in vertical running and consumer fitness magazines including Runner's World, Running Times, Men's Health, Women's Health, Fitness, ESPN Rise and the Running Network's regional publications.
IN-STORE
In-store elements at key national retailers include window displays, point-of-purchase, product displays and consumer brochures. A mobile video resource will reinforce the brand's new marketing platform and feature its product collection. Event sponsorships, a national tour and a new expo booth will also support the brand's marketing platform. The Find Your Strong campaign is planned to run throughout 2011, with several new executions for the fall. Saucony will continue to integrate the theme into upcoming marketing initiatives throughout the year.

Cause Marketing is Dead! (Long Live Cause Marketing)
New IEG strategy paper shows nonprofits and corporations how to build relevant and impactful partnerships for a new era
CHICAGO - (April 28, 2011) - In recent years, the amount of "purchase this product and we will make a donation to a worthy cause" promotions has grown to staggering proportions. At any given time, in-store and online, purchasers of consumer and business products and services are faced with numerous transactional cause marketing campaigns.
Not surprisingly, this cause marketing clutter has led to diminishing returns. When nearly every marketer adopts an idea, it becomes a commodity and no longer has the power to motivate interest and behavior.
So where does that leave nonprofits that rely on revenue from marketing partnerships? Where do businesses that want to support causes, and do well by doing good, go from here?
IEG, LLC-a pioneer in partnership marketing strategy, evaluation and research-puts forth the answer in its new strategy paper (im)Proving Cause.
The paper lays out an innovative, thoughtful approach that already is working for some nonprofits and their corporate partners.
This strategic way of thinking about cause partnerships includes several steps, including:
* Segment and qualify the nonprofit's audience
* Sketch the organization's route to mission
* Sketch the corporation's route to market
* Quantify objectives for both parties
* Find areas of opportunity within each partner's objectives
The paper shares examples of how this can be done, as well as examples from current partnerships that have followed this new strategy and achieved success.
The complete paper is available for download at www.sponsorship.com/sector/causes.aspx and author Diane Knoepke, vice president, client leadership for the IEG Consulting Group, is available for interviews on the need to re-invent cause marketing to ensure its survival.
For more information about IEG and the sponsorship industry, visit www.sponsorship.com or call (800) 834-4850 (outside the U.S. and Canada, (312) 944-1727).

Lagat, Symmonds & Manzano lead TEAM USA against the World
PHILADELPHIA - Team USA is bringing together an all-star lineup with the likes of Bernard Lagat, Nick Symmonds and Leo Manzano to lead the hunt for a win in the Nike men's Distance Medley Relay in what is shaping up to be on of the most competitive events of the 12th edition of USA vs. the World at the 117th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., at Franklin Field this Saturday.
USA vs. the World serves as the first event of the 2011 Outdoor Visa Championship Series, and will be televised on Saturday, April 30, from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN2. Tickets are still available for this year's event at www.ThePennRelays.com.
USA seeks gold in Nike Men's DMR
Since the DMR was first added to the relays line-up in 2006, Kenya and the World All-Stars have claimed the top spot every year, making this the only event of the series that the U.S. has yet to win. Last year's race saw all four teams finish within half a second of each other. With the race decided in a sprint to the finish, Kenya took the top-spot in 9:24.97 with USA Blue and Red in second and third.
Team USA's potential athlete pool for the DMR includes nine-time world and Olympic medalist Bernard Lagat. Lagat has not run at USA vs. the World since the first running of the DMR in 2006 where he joined forces with Chris Lukezic, James Carter and Khadevis Robinson to set the American Record of 9:15.63.
The #1 ranked American for the past three years in the 800m, Nick Symmonds also is in the pool, after he opened last year's 1,200m leg in 2:53.0. Also returning from last year's line up is Leo Manzano who anchored the USA White Team. Manzano has found much success at Franklin field, while in college he anchored five of the University of Texas' relay teams to victory in the 4 x mile and DMR.
Newcomer, Russell Brown (Stanford 2008), who turned heads earlier this year at the New Balance Grand Prix when he won the mile over Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis, will look to show he belongs with the World's best, and is the current world leader in the 1,500m. Also in the pool are David Torrence (Loyola HS, Los Angeles 2003; California 2008)who anchored last year's 2nd place team, and Duane Solomon who ran 1:44.3 for 800m on last year's USA White Team.
While Team USA is assembling a top-notch quartet, they will face stiff competition from Kenya, Canada, Austrailia, Morroco and first-time USA vs. the World competitor, Ethiopia.
USA vs. Jamaica in the BMW Men's 4x100m
The USA/Jamaica rivalry will be at its most intense during the BMW Men's 4x100m. Team USA has the winning record with 9 wins in the 11 years of the event; however, Team Jamaica set the Penn Relays record last year with Usain Bolt turning in a blazing 8.79 anchor leg.
Team USA's relay pool includes five out of the top ten sprinters as ranked at the end of 2010 by Track & Field News. Ivory Williams and Mike Rodgers lead the pool with top times of 10.05 and 9.96 turned in over the past two weeks. Both Rodgers and Williams were on last year's runner-up USA Blue team. The 2010 USA Outdoor Champions over 100m and 200m, Walter Dix and Wallace Spearmon are both in the pool, as well as veterans Darvis "Doc" Patton and Shawn Crawford.
Team Jamaica will bring their best to Philadelphia. Steve Mullings is the current world leader in 9.90, and one of only three athletes who have run under 10--seconds this year. Jamaica's roster also includes Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell who won gold at the 2008 Olympics.
USA hurdlers fill the pool for Visa Men's 4x400m
In the USA's most dominate event of the series, Team USA has won 10 out of 11 times. Hurdlers Bershawn "Batman" Jackson and Angelo Taylor return from the winning 2010 USA Blue team. The duo ended the 2010 season with #1 and #5 world rankings respectively. Jackson most recently set the U.S. leader in his win at the Kansas Relays (48.98), and is the defending Outdoor Visa Series Champion. Other hurdlers in the line-up include two-time World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Kerron Clement, Johnny Dutch who was the runner-up at the 2009 and 2010 USA Outdoor Championships, and Michael Tinsley, the 2006 NCAA champion.
The most decorated 400m specialist of the pool is David Neville who won bronze in the 400m at the 2008 Olympics, and claimed gold and the Olympic Record in the 4x400m relay. Other possible relay members include: 6-time NCAA Champion Xavier Carter, Jamaal Torrance, Lionel Larry (Dominguez HS, Compton 2004; USC 2008), Joshua Scott and Quentin Summers.
Drummond named Team USA Relay Coach
Overseeing Team USA relays at Penn will be Philadelphia native Jon Drummond, who this spring was named Team USA relay coach for the 2011 World Championship and 2012 Olympic Games. Drummond was selected by the USATF Relay Coach Selection Committee and approved by the Board of Directors from a pool of 20 applicants. An Olympic and World Championships relay gold medalist as an athlete, Drummond has served as either head or assistant U.S. relay coach at the 2006 World Junior Championships, where Team USA won three gold and one silver in the relays, including a world junior record; and at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Championships, where the U.S. swept all four relays.
More information on relay fields and line-ups will be released throughout the week. For more information on USA vs. the World, visit www.VisaChampionshipSeries.com.

USA vs. the World serves as the first event of the 2011 Outdoor Visa Championship Series, and will be televised on Saturday, April 30, from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m.

Sir Francis Drake has last home meet on Thursday
last home meet for senior track and field athletes on Thursday
Drake 2011 track and field teams
Your coaches will be feeling your events with you on Thursday. This is one of the great rewards of coaching, we get to compete again. But it is through YOU, and it is YOU who are executing the event, putting yourself into a competition where there are winners and losers.
As my friend who died recently of cancer said last November to the Drake undefeated cross country teams when I asked him if he had anything to say to them, the famous Wes Santee struggled with his weak, damaged voice and offered -
"just win".
When I ran with Wes in 1955/56, he was the hottest track name in the country. Along with having held the world 1500 meter record, Wes at one time had run 3 of the 4 fastest "one mile" times in the history of the event.
So, let's see if we can hear the great one again -
"Just win"
And as Richie Boulet (Sir Francis Drake HS, San Anselmo; Cal), another sub-4 minute miler (3:53.26 3R1 Prefontaine Classic, Eugene, Oregon, May 31, 1998) told the Drake cross country team before the state finals last November, "the fun isn't a party, the fun is the race".
Bravo
Bill Taylor (LA Valley JC 1953; USC 1955)

# 1 "passing the baton to Wes Santee when Mr. Taylor was his teammate in the Marine Corps
# 2 Mr. Taylor watched Rod Berry place second in the California state 2 mile final in 1978, same night as Mr. Taylor's Drake mile relay team finished third out of all of the girl's 4 x 440 "MILE RELAY" teams in the state
#3 Drake girls exchange baton in 1978 in the Meet of Champions in Berkeley; they set a new meet record in the prelims on Friday, lost to Berkeley high school in the finals the next day because the Berkeley team anchored with a 53 second leg; at the state, Berkeley did not place, while Drake was third

Do you know that we have three coaches with division one collegiate backgrounds? Bill Taylor was a member of two national championship track and field teams at USC, Rod Berry was captian of the Stanford track team, and Ross Sullivan was a championship pole vaulter at Princeton. Russ Knudsen was a head coach at Marin Catholic for a considerable number of years and is deep in experience. And Sean Gallagher has returned to his familiar rings where he performed for Drake in the discus and shot put.

Shaheed named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Masters athlete and noted jazz musician Nolan Shaheed has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after he broke his own world record in the M60 800 meter race in 2:08.56 Saturday in Los Angeles.
Running at the Tommie "Tiny" Lister Classic, Shaheed lined-up next to collegiate athletes young enough to be his sons or even grandsons. With 200m to go, announcer Bill Fitzpatrick noted that Shaheed needed a 33-second closing 200m to set the world record. With the crowd behind him, Shaheed crossed the line half a second faster than his efforts at the Mt. Sac Relays the previous week.
"The college kids were wonderful celebrating with me and coming up to shake my hand after the race," Shaeed said. "Then I was named the athlete of the meet, and that was really heartwarming because there were hundreds of great college kids running at this meet, and for them to decide that mine was the greatest achievement of the meet was very touching for me."
Shaheed was first introduced to track in high school, but did not compete seriously until his late 20's. While he once clocked 1:46 for 800m, Shaheed has watched his times in the 800 and 1500m creep up by an average of one second each year as he gets older.
"I will be one of the 95-year-old guys running masters races," Shaeed admits. "I never want to retire from track and field; it's good for your body, and it's good for your mind.
Now in its tenth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
Winners: January 5, Bill Tribou; January 12, Tyler Sorensen; January 20, Josh Cox; January 26,Ben Shorey; February 2, Ashton Eaton; February 9, Ashton Eaton; February 16, Bernard Lagat; February 23, Ryan Crouser; March 2, Jillian Camarena-Williams; March 10, Bill Collins; March 16, Miles Batty; March 23, Shalane Flanagan; March 30, John Nunn; April 6, Aries Merritt; April 13, Gunnar Nixon; April 20, Desiree Davila; April 27, Nolan Shaheed
WEEK IN REVIEW -- APRIL 18-24
From USATF Statistician Glen McMicken
WINDY WACO WELCOMES TOP ONE-LAPPERS
Defending world champion Sanya Richards-Ross and 2004 Olympic champ Jeremy Wariner had to fight against fierce winds in Central Texas, but both 400m stars came away winners at the Michael Johnson/Dr Pepper Classic. Richards-Ross held off Texas A&M's NCAA indoor quarter champ Jessica Beard to win in 52.00, while local favorite Wariner, who ran for Baylor in college, opened his one-lap season with a 45.61.
The strong winds aided Sam Houston State's Artis Edwards to an 8.12m/26-7.75 win in the long jump, and also helped Baylor's Nick Lyons to a 78.39m/257-2 javelin win.
MITCHELL'S ACC DEUCE TAKES WORLD LEAD
Florida State's Maurice Mitchell was a surprise world leader after the ACC Championships at Duke, rolling to a 20.19 in the 200m to lead a medal sweep in that event by the Seminoles. He added a 10.03 PR in the 100m with a kindly 2.0 aiding wind to take second.
North Carolina's LaToya James moved atop the U.S. 400m hurdle list with her 55.83 victory, and Clemson's Bridgette Owens took over the No. 9 spot on the all-time U.S. junior women's 100m hurdles list with her 13.16 PR. Team USA's 2010 World Junior 200 gold medalist Stormy Kendrick led the Clemson women to the team title with her 100/200 double.
BATMAN FLIES TO AMERICAN LEAD WITH 400H WIN AT KANSAS RELAYS
Bershawn "Batman" Jackson, who won Olympic and World bronze at the last two international majors, hurdled his way to the U.S. lead in the 400m hurdles with his 48.98 at the Kansas Relays. Other stars at the meet included 2005 World 100m champ Lauryn Williams, who took a windy century win in 11.10, and Kellie Wells, who continued her tear in the 100m hurdles with a breezy 12.75 victory.
2008 Olympic silver medalist Sheena Tosta (UCLA 2005)opened her 400m hurdle season with a 57.04 to win, and former Indiana State NCAA indoor and outdoor pole vault champ Kylie Hutson soared to the U.S. outdoor lead with a 4.50m/14-9 clearance.
Ivory Williams picked up his second-straight Kansas Relays 100m title with a solid 10.05, while Antwon Hicks clocked 13.35 to win the 110m hurdles over 2010 U.S. bronze medalist Ronnie Ash.
RODGERS, KNIGHT SPEEDY DOWN SOUTH
World Indoor 60 silver medalist Mike Rodgers sizzled the Ole Miss track on the way to his second-fastest 100m ever, assuming the U.S. list lead with a 9.96, and he also took top honors in the 200m. Bianca Knight was the star of the women's meet, capturing a 22.68w/52.55 long sprint double.
WIND, WIND, MORE WIND... DUNCAN BLASTS 200 AT LSU
She had the assistance of a generous 3.2 mps tailwind, but no matter how strong the breeze, Kimberlyn Duncan's 200 was blazing fast. The LSU speedster racked up the third-fastest all-conditions collegiate 200 all-time with her 22.18. Zedric Thomas of LSU was also the beneficiary of ample winds in the men's triple jump, spanning 17.05m/55-11.25w, the best all-conditions outdoor mark by an American this year.
WILSON ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL
Former Indiana star Aarik Wilson hasn't triple jumped since the Olympics at Beijing in 2008, so it was a welcome sight to see the defending Olympic Trials champ begin a comeback with a 15.58m/51-1.5 at the Polytan Invitational in Bloomington. Wilson has battled debilitating leg injuries since his stellar '08 campaign.
Molly Beckwith, another former Hoosier star, clocked the best outdoor 800 time in the U.S. this year with her 2:01.49.
LAZAS JUMPS TO NO. 5 ON ALL-TIME JUNIOR DEC LIST
Arkansas freshman Kevin Lazas, who finished 14th for Team USA at last summer's World Junior Championships, overcame tough weather conditions at the McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville to claim the No. 5 spot on the U.S. junior all-time decathlon list with a 7,542-point effort.
ELLIS MEET YIELDS HS STEEPLECHASE HISTORY
New York high schooler Eddie Owens ran the fastest prep 3,000m steeplechase time in 32 years at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton. The Brooklyn Packer runner finished in 8:59.53, also an age-17 U.S. record.
CROUSER MAKING THROWS WAVES AGAIN...MAKE THAT CROUSERS
Oregon has a passel of talented Crousers roaming the throwing circles and runways, and 2011 indoor shot star Ryan Crouser showed that he is ready to make a splash outdoors after his 72-7.5 win in the shot at the Centennial Invitational. That toss gave the 2009 World Youth champ the No. 7 spot on the all-time outdoor prep list.
Sister Haley Crouser grabbed the No. 6 notch on the all-time high school list in the javelin at the same meet with her 173-0. For good measure, Washington prep Sean Keller moved to 10th on the U.S. junior all-time jav list with his 232-1.

Two national leaders at Sacramento Meet of Champions on Saturday
I am going to announce the Sacramento Meet of Champions at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Sacramento City College on Saturday, April 30. We have two high school national leaders in the field: junior Trinity Wilson (St. Mary's College High School, Berkeley) 13.50 100 meter hurdles and senior Ciarra Brewer (James Logan High School, Union City) 42-3 1/2(A)i triple jump. Brewer, who set a personal record of 42-4 1/4 as a sophomore in 2009, is going to Florida. Wilson is the national sophomore class record holder at 13.49.

At the University of South Florida, more than half of the 71 women on the cross-country roster failed to run a race in 2009. Asked about it, a few laughed and said they did not know they were on the team.
The University of California, Irvine, is among at least five California universities that sponsor women’s indoor track teams despite a mild climate and a dearth of indoor facilities. Those universities do not offer men’s indoor track.

UCSD Women Ranked #4, Chico State Men Ranked #12 in NCAA DII
April 26, 2011
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announces the association’s week four National Team Computer Rankings for the 2011 outdoor track & field season in NCAA Division II. Unlike their NCAA Division I brethren, the D-II top teams survived relatively unscathed from the traditional "moving week". Moving week being, week four, where preseason data is thrown out (except for combined events) and only current season marks are used to give teams a ranking score.
Abilene Christian's men and Grand Valley State's women stayed at their top posts for another week. Saint Augustine's men continue to creep up the chart and now stand at a season-best No. 2, just five ranking points behind ACU.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week four national computer rankings for NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field on Tuesday. Traditionally, the largest "moving week" of them all is week four as preseason data gets thrown out and teams are scored based only on the season in question. As a result, a big number of changes swept through the top 25 this week.
On the men’s side, Texas A&M moves up a spot to take over No. 1 for the first time this season. The two-time defending champions are followed by No. 2 LSU who moved to their season-high post after being ranked fifth last week. After winning another ACC title, Florida State moved to a season-best notch at No. 3. Florida, who had been ranked No. 1 since the preseason, slipped to No. 4.
In the women’s rankings, LSU and Texas A&M swaped spots, resulting in the first No. 1 ranking for LSU this season. Two-time defending national champions Texas A&M had been ranked in the top spot since the preseason.
