COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior Chris Gowell won the 800 meters and met NCAA provisional standards, while junior Robbie Knorr ran away with a victory in the 5,000 meters at the Texas A&M Reveille Invitational in College Station, Texas.
Gowell, a 2009 All-American, picked up right where he left off, sprinting to a nearly two-second victory in the half-mile with a time of one minute, 48.87 seconds. Gowell's time was well under the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1:50.50.

In the 5000 meters, Knorr led a strong group of Bears that finished in three of the top five spots, including a 1-2 finish. Knorr crossed the line with a time of 14:24.36, ahead of teammate Jeff Sadler, who clocked a time of 14:48.05. Brandon Reed rounded out the top five in the event with a time of 15:24.43 in fifth place

"It was a really good opener for us," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We had a lot of nice, solid performances. Chris Gowell had a nice opener for us in the 800, and Robbie Knorr and Jeff Sadler each had really nice races today, too. "

For the women, Skylar White had the performance of the day, crushing the previous Baylor shot put record by more than two feet. White unleashed a toss of 46 feet, 11 inches to break Rachel Rossler's eight-year old record of 44-8. White finished fourth at the meet with her school-record throw.

"Skylar White had a great personal best breaking the school record," Harbour said. Overall, we had a lot of good performances."

Sophomore Samantha Patty was one of two Bears in the top four of the women's 5,000 meters, finishing second with a time of 17:59.07. Teammate Renae Van Wyhe placed fourth, clocking a time of 18:18.17.

Baylor's track and field team will be back in action on Jan. 16, 2010 at the Texas A&M Invitational at the Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium.
