Corey White's apparent Pac-10 record-breaking javelin throw highlighted USC track and field's efforts today (April 4) in the final day of competition at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas and at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Pomona, Calif.

White, a redshirt senior, won the javelin competition at the Texas Relays with a new school and what appeared to be a Pac-10 record-throw of 272-2 (82.97m). White broke the Pac-10 record of 268-7 (81.86m) set by Esko Mikkola of Arizona in 1998, however, almost simultaneously Oregon's Cyrus Hostetler threw 272-10 (83.16m) in Eugene, Ore. to establish a new Pac-10 record. White did however better his own USC record of 267-10 (81.65m) set last season when he went on to place second at the NCAA Championships. To put in perspective how dominating his win was, White had three different throws that would have won the competition and the second-place finisher threw more than 37 feet shorter than White's throw, despite posting an NCAA Regional qualifying mark.

Also with a good day throwing the javelin for USC was sophomore Kristine Busa. Busa placed third in the women's javelin with season-best throw of 164-8 (50.20m).

The men's 4x400m relay team of freshman Joey Hughes, junior Jason Price, junior Nate Anderson and freshman Duane Walker won the Invitational 4x400m relay with a season-best time of 3:07.56. The women's 4x400m relay team of junior Elizabeth Olear, freshman Dalilah Muhammad, junior Shalina Clarke and junior Myra Hasson ran in the women's Invitational and placed second with a season-best time of 3:35.06.





The women also ran in the University/College 4x100m relay and placed seventh with a time of 45.52. That team was comprised of junior Judith Onyepunuka, freshman Erica Alexander, freshman Aareon Payne and Olear.

The men's distance medley team of freshman Blake Shaw, Price, Anderson and senior Irek Sekretarski placed second with a time of 9:51.32.

The Trojans also faired well in the hurdles, as juniors Nia Ali (13.32) and Clarke (13.55) ran season-best times in the 100m HH to place fourth and seventh respectively. Sophomore Oscar Spurlock placed fourth in the men's 110m HH with a wind-aided PR of 13.72.

Redshirt junior Brandon Estrada set a new PR and placed fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 17-4 1/2 (5.30m). Estrada's previous best had been 17-1. Fellow redshirt junior pole vaulters Derek Scott in the men's competition and Brysun Stately in the women's competition no heighted.

In late action at the Texas Relays on Friday, senior triple jumper Aven Wright placed third in the Section B competition with a PR of 50-4 3/4 (15.36m). In the men's long jump, senior Desmond Hamilton had a season-best jump of 23-4 3/4w to take seventh. Junior Shana Woods placed 11th in the women's long jump at 19-5 1/2 (5.93m). Also, the men's 1600m sprint medley relay team of junior Ahmad Rashad, senior Matthew Palmer, Hughes and Shaw won its heat and placed seventh overall with a time of 3:20.59.

On Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, senior Kenisha Strong won the women's pole vault with a big PR of 12-1 1/2 (3.70m), bettering her previous best by nearly six inches.

Sophomore Shea Wickland won the women's 5000m race with a time of 17:34.99, the top mark by a Trojan female in the event this season. Junior Bridget Helgerson placed seventh in the event with a time of 18:09.21.

Among the other top Trojan female performances on the day at Pomona were: sophomore Allison Rojewski in the 1500m (4th, with a PR of 4:40.23), sophomore Courtney Clayton in the long jump (6th, 18-0 1/2), sophomore Cara Bickers in the long jump (10th, 17-9) and triple jump (9th, 36-5), senior Katalin Mate in the discus (4th, 157-9), freshman Ashley Pyka in the discus (10th, 149-2) and sophomore Marissa Minderler in the hammer (4th, 173-3).

For the men at Pomona, sophomore Sean Jackson placed 11th in both the 100m (11.12) and 200m (22.16). His 200m time was the best by a Trojan this season and his 100m time, the third best.

Among the other top Trojan male performances were: freshman Scott DeYoung in the 400m (5th, 48.60) and 200m (12th, 22.22), senior Andrew Gausepohl in the 1500m (8th, new PR of 3:58.64) and senior Charles Fasi in the pole vault (2nd, with a new PR of 15-9).
