SEATTLE - California's men's distance medley relay ran an NCAA automatic qualifying time, set a school record and set a meet record by winning the race in 9:29.71 on Friday at the MPSF Indoor Championships at Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility. The quartet of senior Mark Matusak, senior Jake Hanson, freshman Sebastian Sam and junior Michael Coe broke the school mark of 9:33.77 Cal set in the 2007 NCAA Indoor championships. The Cal women stand in fourth place and the Bears men stand 10th after the first day of the conference meet.

"That was the third-fastest time behind Arkansas [9:28.35] and Oregon [9:29.39] right now," Cal head coach Tony Sandoval said. "Any other year, that would be the nation's leading time, and we would be the preeminent favorite to win the event [at the NCAA Indoor Championships]. Not this year. Nevertheless, we're excited to run so fast and that we're going to NCAAs."

The Bears also hit NCAA provisional qualifiers in the women's 60-meter dash preliminaries, with sophomore Cherrelle Garrett tying her season-best time of 7.34, the women's 5000-meter run, with sophomore Alison Greggor running a 16:30.56 to place fourth, and the women's pole vault, with sophomore Allison Stokke posting a mark of 4.00 meters (13-1.50) to tie for seventh place. Garrett ran the fastest 60-meter time and qualified for tomorrow's final.

"The first day doesn't mean a lot as far as standings," Sandoval said. "We have a lot of stronger events coming tomorrow, but we did have some surprising performances. Alison Greggor ran a provisional time in the 5000. That was phenomenal. The women's DMR ran very well in third place. We looked pretty good in Kyle Mills-Bunje and Kevin Kuechler in the multis. And Allison Stokke jumped well in the pole vault."

Cal's women's DMR, which consisted of redshirt freshman Taylor Bryson, sophomore Kayla Dixon, senior Francesca Weems and freshman Deborah Maier, ran a time of 11:41.10 for third.

After four events in the men's heptathlon, Mills-Bunje stands in fourth place with 2948 points. Kuechler, a redshirt freshman, is eighth with 2719 points.

The final day of the MPSF Indoor Championships begins Saturday at 11 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, women's triple jump final, men's high jump final and women's shot put final.
