NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships – Men's 800 meter run

This is a list of the NCAA outdoor champions in the 880 yard run until 1975, and the metric 800 meters being contested in Olympic years starting in 1932. Metrication occurred in 1976, so all subsequent championships were at the metric distance. Hand timing was used until 1973, starting in 1974 fully automatic timing was used.

Track VFL & All-American Willie Thomas Passes Away at 67

Willie Thomas was a two-time NCAA champion, winning the 800m in 1972 and the 880y in 1974

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- VFL and former Tennessee track standout Willie Thomas passed away this week in Chicago at the age of 67 after battling cancer.
Thomas was a three-year letter winner from 1972-1974, and a member of Tennessee's 1974 NCAA outdoor championship team.
In his time as a Vol, Thomas was also a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA champion and five-time SEC champ.
Thomas played a big part of Tennessee securing its 1974 NCAA outdoor championship as he won the 880-yard run in 1:48.72, a mark that still stands as the second-best in UT history.
In 1972, Thomas' 800-meter championship helped Tennessee to a 10th place NCAA outdoor finish.
On the SEC stage, Thomas was a part of the indoor 4x800 meter relay championship team in 1972 and 1973, and also won the 800-meters at both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1973.
Thomas was also inducted into UT's athletic hall of fame in March of 2016.
Thomas, a Chicago native, came to UT in 1972 by way of transfer from Florida A&M following his freshman season. Before that, he was a high school All-American at Englewood High School in Chicago. Following his career with the Vols, Thomas returned to Chicago, where he worked as a city employee, and later, as an employee for the University of Chicago.
Thomas' life will be celebrated on Friday in Chicago.

Brian Simpson of Harrisburg Missouri Dies in Terrible Bus Crash

Harrisburg, Missouri- When the sound of ambulances and fire trucks ring through the air, it can literally take your breath away. Instant prayers go out by the hundreds following the first responders to the scene of an accident.
Many of us are now mourning the loss of a great man, Brian Simpson of Harrisburg, Missouri.
Brian was a wonderful teacher and coach at Harrisburg R-VIII. He also was a loving husband, father and friend. Brian was killed in a terrible car crash yesterday while driving a bus with students, to a cross country track meet in Moberly.
Hundreds of friends and family gathered at the baseball field last night to pray for Coach Simpson and his family. The lives, Brian and his family have touched, are abundant.
Brian was a history teacher and coached baseball and cross country for the school district. The school district has cancelled all activities this week including school today. There is no doubt, they are making Brian’s family and their students, top priority. Brian leaves behind a loving wife and daughter.
According to the crash report, the driver of the truck involved in the two-vehicle crash is Brandon Brill, 26, of Clark Missouri. Accident investigators say that Brill was in the wrong lane and swerved into the bus. The bus caught fire after the crash and Brill was flown to the hospital with serious injuries after being extricated from the truck.
Six people were on the bus, including Brian Simpson. The other five people were girls on the Harrisburg cross country team. The five girls have minor to moderate injuries. One of the girls was transported to the hospital for treatment of her moderate injuries.
The fatal crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Route F in Boone County between Route 22 and Everett Carr Road.
Our prayers and condolences go out to the family of Brian Simpson, to the entire staff, faculty and student body of the Harrisburg school district and to the Brill family.

Harrisburg coach killed in school bus crash; four students sustain minor injuries

A Harrisburg Public Schools teacher and coach is dead after a pickup truck hit the bus he was driving head-on Thursday afternoon on Route F in northern Boone County.
The crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. just west of the intersection with North Everett Carr Road when a westbound four-door Dodge Ram pickup truck crossed the center line and hit the bus, Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp said. The bus was taking five girls, three middle school students and two high school students, on the Harrisburg track team to a cross-country meet in Moberly when the crash happened, Blomenkamp said. Both the bus and the pickup were lying on their sides just south of the road after the crash.
Harrisburg Superintendent Steve Combs said in an emailed statement that the crash killed Brian Simpson. Simpson was a history teacher and coached the district’s baseball, cross-country and quiz bowl teams.
“School will not be in session” Friday “as we will work together to support the Simpson family, as well as the needs of our students and staff,” Combs said in the statement. “We will have additional counselors at the schools tomorrow who will be available to support any student or staff member as needed. We will also continue to provide counseling next week.”
Counselors also will be on hand next week, Combs said. The school district’s website said parent-teacher conferences set for Monday will be rescheduled.
Four girls escaped the bus through the rear door and the escape hatch on top of the bus, Blomenkamp said, and one was pulled out by a firefighter while the bus was on fire. Four were taken to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the Ram was taken by helicopter with serious injuries to University Hospital after firefighters cut off the roof of the truck to get him out.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The name, age and condition of the truck driver were not immediately released.
Gary Anderson, who lives just west of the crash site, said he was getting out of his car after work when he heard a sound he thought was an object that had fallen inside his home. He went into his house and emerged a short time later to see bystanders and first responders on the road. Anderson said he saw firefighters pull a conscious, young man with a bloodied head from the pickup truck, and firefighters were asking the man if his leg felt better. Many bystanders stopped to help before the fire department arrived, Blomenkamp said.
Blomenkamp said it didn’t appear the Ram braked before the crash, but the cause of the crash was not immediately known. The crash caused a small fire in the bus’ engine block, but firefighters were able to extinguish it quickly.

Amador Valley High named National Blue Ribbon School

Winners to be recognized at ceremony in November

Amador Valley High has been named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School.

Amador Valley High School has been named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School, one of only 25 schools in the state to receive the honor.

The U.S. Department of Education announced all 342 winners Thursday. The recognition is based on a school's overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps, officials said.

Amador Valley is one of two schools in Alameda County -- along with Albany Middle School -- to earn the distinction this year.

"Congratulations to the Amador Valley High staff, students, and families for being distinguished as a National Blue Ribbon School," PUSD superintendent David Haglund stated. "This honor is an impressive accomplishment and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Amador community."

Added Amador principal Mike Williams, "This recognition belongs to the amazing staff, students, and families who contribute to the success and incredible culture of Amador Valley High School each and every day."

This was not the first time Amador has been named a Blue Ribbon School. Foothill and Amador received the honor in 2006. Vintage Hills Elementary also earned the distinction in 2015.

This year's National Blue Ribbon Schools will be honored at a U.S. Department of Education ceremony in November, when educators will receive a plaque and flag for their school.
