Senior Carrie Verdon (Campolindo, Moraga) and Karlie Garcia (Oakmont, Roseville) met twice during the 2011 cross country season. Verdon won by 9.8 seconds at the Stanford Invitational and by 0.8 at the State Meet. Unfortunately, Verdon sustained a stress fracture at the State Meet, which prevented her from going to the Foot Locker West.

Assistant Coach
Experience: Fifth Season
Graduated: Idaho State, 2003
Paul Litchfield enters into his fifth year as an assistant coach for the Bengals after volunteering during the 2006-07 season. He competed four years for the Bengals in the multi-events and pole vault earning four Big Sky titles in the pole vault (two indoors and two outdoors) and one title in the decathlon.
He earned All-American honors in 2002 for his fourth-place performance at the NCAA National Championships in the pole vault and still holds both the indoor and outdoor ISU school records in the event.
After graduating, Litchfield stuck around to train and compete. During the 2005 season, Litchfield competed at the USA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships placing third and ninth respectively. In 2008 he was an Olympic Trials finalist taking 10th place, putting only seven athletes between Paul and his Olympic dream.
Litchfield is originally from Auburn, Calif., where he attended Bear River High School. Auburn is the same home town as ISU’s own Stacy Dragila. Paul met Dragila and Coach Nielsen at a pole vault clinic in California and knew instantly that Idaho State was the place for him. He earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Idaho State University in 2003.
Litchfield’s passion for the vault has taken him all over the world to compete and study the different coaching philosophies and practices used by various respected national coaches and athletes, giving him a unique perspective into an individual’s needs for such a complicated event.

Holiday Indoor Pole Vault Meet @ The Factory in Woodland
Here are "official" results from yesterday's (Dec19) first ever Holiday Pole Vault Competition at The Factory in Woodland, California which is the winter training facility for Yolo Striders, a Yolo County track and field club. Although 19' world class American Paul LItchfield from Auburn was on hand and did not take part in the festivities, three top women SJS Masters finalists from 2011 were on hand as well as CIF state champ Ian Rock who is now a full-ride scholarship track and field athlete with Duke University as a freshman.

We are pleased to invite your boys and girl’s track and field teams to the twenty third annual Mt. Pleasant Relays. As you know, this is a participation meet. You have to have numbers to compete. With this in mind we have invited schools with strong programs and large turnouts. All teams entered are among the best in California. There will be 16 full teams participating in the meet,. Every event including field events will be a relay. The following will give you the specifics of the meet. Our facility has 2 Vault areas, 2 shot rings, and 2 discus areas, 2 high jump areas
Place: Mt.Pleasant H.S.
Date: Saturday March 3,2012
Time: 8:00-3:00 (Cost: $400 Per School $200boys/$200 Girls Make check payable to Mt.Pleasant High School.
Format
1. Every event is a relay requiring 4 participants of the same sex (including Jumps and throws.)
2. Scoring will be 10-8-6-4-2-1.
3. There will be a team trophy for 1st place boys, 1st place girls and 1st place combined. Watches will be given to all members of winning relay teams
We have no set time schedule. The first running event will begin promptly at #11:00 with the girls running first then boys. We will follow the order of events to conclusion. 1 heat of all events (except Shuttle hurtles/4x400 and shorter events) Meet should be over around 3:00 P.M.:
1. 4x100m/110 mHH
2. 4x 1600 Relay 1 heat boys/girls
3. 4x100 meter Relay
4. 4x800 meter relay 1 heat boys /girls
5. 4x300mIH Shuttle relay
6. 4x200 meter Relay
7. 4x3200 meter Relay competitors will run together in both races like X- C
Combined times determine place.
8. Weightmens/women’s 400 Relay (must have thrown the shot or disc in the meet to be eligible) **(if shot/Disc not complete this will move to after 4x400)
9. 4x400 meter Relay
***Any incomplete teams must inform clerk of course at coaches meeting 10:00 or at start line to reseed heats.
Field Events:
1.Throwing Events will begin at 10:00; competitors will throw in flights by school. Girls will throw the Shot, Boys the Disc. Everyone will have 4 throws.
3. In the LJ/TJ There will be 2 pits the long jump will begin at 8:00 (and the Triple jump will follow (approx 11:30?). The Boys will jump in front of the visiting grandstands. The girls in in the pit near the home grandstands. Athletes will jump in flights by school and each jumper will have 4 jumps. If jumper scratches or you only have 3 jumpers, those marks that are legal will be added for the team score.
4. The HJ, will begin at 9:00(2 pits) with the bar at 4’0 for the girls 5’ for the boys .The bar will go up 4” at a time till 5’0(girls) 6’0”(boys) where it will then be raised 2” at a time.
5.The Pole Vault will start at 9:00. The bar will be set at 6’ (girls) 8’ (boys), The bar will be raised at 1-foot intervals till 9’(girls), 12’(boys) where it will then be raised in 6” intervals. ***The vault official may change this height rule. *. (Track events will not be underway and you may run through on the track.)
6. Remember in all field events each team should have four entrants. The best mark of each entrant will be used to compute the total team mark. Should 1 of your athletes foul or you don’t have four athletes the remaining athletes’ scores will comprise the teams score.
7. Clerk of the course; All teams will be entered and should report to the start line when called it is assumed all teams are entered in all relays. Clerk will reseed heats at the line if needed.
8. Coaches meeting (New) We will need 1 rep from each team in the center of the field at 10:00 to discuss meet format and possible scratches to to early reseed of relays/Shuttle hurdles
Miscellaneous Information; track requires 3/16 inch spikes anything bigger and you will trip. There will be no locker rooms available, but bathrooms will be open. There will be a ($5.00) charge for all spectators over the age of 10.Parking will be in the student@ faculty parking lots, and on the street. Buses may park at Boeger Jr High across from the track. There will be a concession stand open, and there will be meet t-shirts available for $15. You may bring your Entry fee (Made out to Mt. Pleasant H.S. with you to the meet or mail it to me at school.
This meet will be run rain or shine and there will be no refunds of entry fees.

3. In the LJ/TJ There will be 2 pits the long jump will begin at 8:00 (and the Triple jump will follow (approx 11:30?). The Boys will jump in front of the visiting grandstands. The girls in in the pit near the home grandstands. Athletes will jump in flights by school and each jumper will have 4 jumps. If jumper scratches or you only have 3 jumpers, those marks that are legal will be added for the team score.
4. The HJ, will begin at 9:00(2 pits) with the bar at 4’0 for the girls 5’ for the boys .The bar will go up 4” at a time till 5’0(girls) 6’0”(boys) where it will then be raised 2” at a time.
5.The Pole Vault will start at 9:00. The bar will be set at 6’ (girls) 8’ (boys), The bar will be raised at 1-foot intervals till 9’(girls), 12’(boys) where it will then be raised in 6” intervals. ***The vault official may change this height rule. *. (Track events will not be underway and you may run through on the track.)
6. Remember in all field events each team should have four entrants. The best mark of each entrant will be used to compute the total team mark. Should 1 of your athletes foul or you don’t have four athletes the remaining athletes’ scores will comprise the teams score.
7. Clerk of the course; All teams will be entered and should report to the start line when called it is assumed all teams are entered in all relays. Clerk will reseed heats at the line if needed.
8. Coaches meeting (New) We will need 1 rep from each team in the center of the field at 10:00 to discuss meet format and possible scratches to to early reseed of relays/Shuttle hurdles
Miscellaneous Information; track requires 3/16 inch spikes anything bigger and you will trip. There will be no locker rooms available, but bathrooms will be open. There will be a ($5.00) charge for all spectators over the age of 10.Parking will be in the student@ faculty parking lots, and on the street. Buses may park at Boeger Jr High across from the track. There will be a concession stand open, and there will be meet t-shirts available for $15. You may bring your Entry fee (Made out to Mt. Pleasant H.S. with you to the meet or mail it to me at school.
This meet will be run rain or shine and there will be no refunds of entry fees.

California State Indoor HS Meet
Nine qualifying meets to be held January 7th and 14th
There will be 8 qualifying meets held on January 7 & 14, 2012 around California for the January 21st meet. There will be four meets in Southern California and two meets in Northern California and one in Central California and one in San Diego. The entry fee at the 9 qualifying meets will be determined by the meet director at the specific location.

Bryan Fetzer was named Virginia's director of track and field/cross country on Tuesday (Dec. 20) and spoke with VirginiaSports.com shortly after being hired. This is the first section of a multi-part interview with the Cavaliers' newest head coach.
Question: How does it feel to be named Virginia's director of track and field/cross country?
Fetzer: It is absolutely amazing. I feel very blessed, honored and humbled. I am so excited to hit the ground running and try to make UVa better than it already is.
Question: What is your coaching philosophy and what you stand for?
Fetzer: My coaching philosophy is to communicate, to motivate and foster an environment that is filled with a passion for excellence. We're going to make sure everyone is on the same page, that the athletes and coaches understand what is expected of them and they know what we're trying to do and where we're trying to go.
Communication with my student-athletes is important; I'll always have an open door to talk and share our thought process. My job is to motivate, be positive and have a good attitude, not only with my students, but my staff and the folks that work with us.
Fostering an environment with people who have a passion of excellence. I want to be the best and I will always be a lot harder on myself than anybody else will. I will constantly expect and push our team to do their absolute best, no matter what it is. Whether it's in the classroom, the weight room, on the track, at a meet or doing community service. I want people to look at our program and say, ‘Wow!'
Question: What attracted you to the University of Virginia?
Fetzer: It's the total package. It's an incredible academic school and a storied athletics' program that's in one of the great conferences in the country. It's a no-brainer. I think the things we can accomplish can be great, but at the same time it can be very challenging. Having an opportunity to guide this program, I'm ecstatic about it.
Question: What are your goals for this program?
Fetzer: We're going to graduate student athletes, get better every day, win championships and we're going to be on the podium, which is top four in the country. Those are my big goals, but my first goal for the program is to create a team environment. I want everyone to realize that were all in this together. From every single athlete, men and women, from every event, all the coaches on staff to every single support staff member, from sports information, strength and conditioning, equipment and across the board and we all will function this team as a family. That's the first goal, we accomplish that first goal, those big goals will come into place.

Michael Dunne Named Track & Field Assistant Coach

SAN DIEGO - Michael Dunne, who coached the South Coast Cross Country Elite team to back-to-back USA Junior Cross Country championships in 2009-10, has been named an assistant track and field coach at San Diego State, head coach Shelia Burrell announced today. Dunne will coach the Aztec mid-distance and distance runners, including the cross country team in the fall.
"We are thrilled to add Michael to our coaching staff," Burrell said. "His addition will help our recruiting and alumni relationships with the distance community."
Dunne comes to Montezuma Mesa after a successful six-year stint at San Clemente High School and a four-year term with the SCXC Elite squad. This past season at San Clemente, Dunne guided the Tritons to the CIF Division I State Championship title. Dunne also coached a pair of third-place teams (2008-09) and the individual champion in 2008. He made his presence know right away at San Clemente, helping the Tritons finish eighth in the state in his first year (2006), just one season after they were last in Orange County.
Dunne had even more success with the SCXC Elite, guiding the club team to Junior USA Cross Country national titles in 2009-10 and a third-place finish in 2008. Additionally, Dunne coached the third-place individual finisher at the 2009 USA Cross Country national championship as well as a Footlocker National Championship finalist in 2009.
At the international level, Dunne helped his SCXC Elite athletes qualify for 12 junior national team spots, competing internationally in six countries. Dunne also has coached at four world championships, including two cross country events (2009 and 2011) and two mountain running events (2008 and 2010). Two of his SCXC athletes have won world mountain running championships (third place in 2008, second place in 2009).
"I can't put into words how fortunate I feel to have the opportunity to coach at San Diego State University," Dunne said. "Coaching at the Division I level is a dream come true for me and the chance to do it at SDSU is perfect for my talents and program development. With the athletic facilities, staff, infrastructure, administrative support and athletes all in place, we will have a structured, comprehensive distance program that will propel us to the next level."
Dunne, who received his bachelor's degree in biology from Cornell in 1974 and a master's in exercise physiology and biomechanics at UCLA in 1981, is a certified exercise physiologist, a certified USATF Level 2 Coach, a certified AAF Advanced Track and Field Coach and a certified CIF Coach. Additionally, Dunne is a USATF/USOC Elite Coach in the distance and sprinting events. He also has coaching experience with the USA Disabled Cycling Team (1994-95) and the American Youth Soccer Organization (1996-06).
Over the years, Dunne has coached and worked at over 25 coaching clinics. Dunne was also a featured speaker in sports nutrition at the past two National Coaches Academies.
As an athlete, Dunne was an AAU distance runner from 1978-83 and a member of the USA National Cycling Team in 1988, 1992 and 1993. Dunne competed at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Cycling Road Trials and cycled in Europe from 1992-93. A four-time California state cycling champion on the road and the track and a member of the Olympic Development Program (1986-88), Dunne also competed in the Masters World Championships in 1992 and 1993 in Austria, winning the title in 1993.
