Youth leads the way for Wildcats at Stanford

PALO ALTO – Days like Saturday are why the Chico State cross country program is considered one of the best in the West Region, regardless of division. The Wildcats finished fourth out of 28 teams at the Division I Stanford Invitational, behind only Stanford, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara, and well ahead of some of the other top Division I programs in the West, including Loyola Marymount, UC Davis, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara, Sacramento State, Fresno State, and UC Irvine.
Adrian Sherrod finished 14th, Isaac Chavez 26th, Johnny Sanchez 32nd, Alfonso Cisneros 35th, and Joey Kochlacs 44th to give the Wildcats a total of 139 points. They finished ahead of 14 of the 17 Division I teams in the field and obliterated the next best non-Division I finisher, Pomona Pitzer, which finished 13th with 444 points.
Stanford (ranked No. 1 among Division I teams in the West) won with 27 points, UCLA scored 52, and UC
Johnny Sanchez finished 33rd overall. He was the third freshman to cross the line. Santa Barbara just nipped Chico State for third with 130 points. Loyola Marymount was fifth well back in Chico State’s rearview mirror with 188 points.
The 139 points are the Wildcats’ lowest total since 2008 when they also finished fourth out of 28 teams
with 122 points.
Sherrod covered the eight-kilometer course in 24:23, bettering the finisher not representing a Division I program (Chavez) by 14 seconds. Chavez, Sanchez and Cisneros all crossed the line as well before Cal Poly Pomona’s Ryan Carrell, who was the first Division II athletes to finish that didn’t represent Chico State.
Joshua Linen was the sixth Wildcat to cross the line, a fraction behind the team’s final scorer, Kochlacs. Joseph Rivera was 55th, Dayne Gradone 57th, Anthony Costales 63rd, and Jeremy Brummitt 74th in the 242-runner field.
This marks the seventh time in the last nine years the Wildcats have finished fourth or better in Palo Alto. And they plan to return next year with a team that may even be stronger. The top four finishers this season are all underclassmen. Sherrod’s a junior, Chavez and Cisneros sophomores, and Sanchez a freshman. Brummitt is also a freshman and Gradone is a sophomore.
The Wildcats, who entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the West and No. 5 in the nation among Division II schools, will be back in action next Saturday at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore. The Oct. 15 Santa Clara Invitational will mark the end of the regular season, followed by the CCAA Championships (Oct. 22), NCAA West Regionals (Nov. 5) and NCAA Championships (Nov. 19).

DIII Regional Cross Country Rankings — Week 3
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week three regional rankings for the NCAA Division III 2011 season on Tuesday. No new numbers ones were reported this week.
New to the regional top ten for the first time this week are: MEN - Springfield (Mass.) (New England), UT Tyler (South/Southeast); WOMEN - Illinois College (Midwest), Wesleyan (Conn.) (New England).
NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held on Saturday, November 12. Championship sites.
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by either a single member coach or by polling the region's coaches (each region varies).

DIII Regional Cross Country Rankings — Week 3
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week three regional rankings for the NCAA Division III 2011 season on Tuesday. No new numbers ones were reported this week.
New to the regional top ten for the first time this week are: MEN - Springfield (Mass.) (New England), UT Tyler (South/Southeast); WOMEN - Illinois College (Midwest), Wesleyan (Conn.) (New England).
NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held on Saturday, November 12. Championship sites.
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by either a single member coach or by polling the region's coaches (each region varies).

DIII Regional Cross Country Rankings — Week 3
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week three regional rankings for the NCAA Division III 2011 season on Tuesday. No new numbers ones were reported this week.
New to the regional top ten for the first time this week are: MEN - Springfield (Mass.) (New England), UT Tyler (South/Southeast); WOMEN - Illinois College (Midwest), Wesleyan (Conn.) (New England).
NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held on Saturday, November 12. Championship sites.
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by either a single member coach or by polling the region's coaches (each region varies).

DII Regional Cross Country Rankings – Week 2
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week two regional rankings for the NCAA Division II 2011 season on Tuesday. In the South region, Alabama-Huntsville takes over as the new No. 1 men's team while Central Missouri's men are the new top team in the South Central region.
New to the regional top ten for the first time this week are:
MEN - Molloy (East), Indianapolis (Midwest), Truman State (South Central), Grand Canyon (West)
WOMEN - Seton Hill (Atlantic), Lewis (Midwest), Dallas Baptist (South Central), Incarnate Word (South Central)

DII Regional Cross Country Rankings – Week 2
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week two regional rankings for the NCAA Division II 2011 season on Tuesday. In the South region, Alabama-Huntsville takes over as the new No. 1 men's team while Central Missouri's men are the new top team in the South Central region.
New to the regional top ten for the first time this week are:
MEN - Molloy (East), Indianapolis (Midwest), Truman State (South Central), Grand Canyon (West)
WOMEN - Seton Hill (Atlantic), Lewis (Midwest), Dallas Baptist (South Central), Incarnate Word (South Central)
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Cal’s Women Leap to Tenth from Unranked in Latest National Coaches’ Poll
NEW ORLEANS – On Tuesday, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its week three national cross country coaches’ poll for the 2011 NCAA Division I season. The top five men's teams and the top nine women's teams stood their ground from last week's standing, but a few shifts occurred, including the jump from unranked to tenth by the women of Cal after their tied-first place performance at last weekend's Griak Invitational.
AROUND THE POLLS
MEN
-- Top five remained unchanged for the second-straight week.
-- Season-best positions on the poll were achieved this week by No. 6 Indiana, No. 9 NC State, No. 14 BYU, No. 20 Minnesota, and No. 26 Eastern Michigan. NC State was the winning team at Minnesota's Griak Invitational last weekend over then-No. 10 Portland and then-No. 24 Minnesota.
-- Michigan is in the top 30 for the first time this season, debuting at 28th.
-- Arizona State (tied 29th) returns to the poll for the first time since the preseason.
-- The Big East with six teams in the poll leads all conferences, followed by the Big Ten (5) and Pac-12 (4).
-- This weekend will be a busy one as 27 ranked teams are slated to be in action ... The Notre Dame Invitational is scheduled to have eight ranked teams on hand as No. 3 Stanford, No. 10 Florida State, and No. 12 Princeton headline the group ... Lehigh's Paul Short Run is expected to have eight ranked teams, including a split Princeton group, in tow as well as No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 5 Iona ... Oklahoma is also listed for the Cowboy Jamboree which has six ranked teams on the docket, including top-ranked host Oklahoma State and No. 6 Indiana ... No. 2 Wisconsin will visit No. 8 Oregon for the Bill Dellinger Invitational ... No. 7 Colorado hosts the Rocky Mountain Shootout ... No. 9 NC State stays near home with the Great American Cross Country Festival in Raleigh.
WOMEN
-- The top nine in the poll were unchanged for the second-straight week.
-- Cal leaped from unranked (but receiving votes) to the tenth spot in the poll after managing a first-place tie with No. 8 Iowa State at the Griak Invitational. Cal defeated seven ranked teams, including then-No. 10 Arizona. The ranking is the Golden Bears' highest-ever poll ranking (since 1995), topping their previous best of No. 22 last year. Cal's best showing at the NCAA Championships was ninth in 1988.
-- Arkansas was also unranked last week, but now stands at 18th after defeating then-No. 19 West Virginia and then-No. 29 at last weekend's Toledo Inter-Regional Bubble Buster.
-- Vanderbilt makes their first appearance in the coaches' poll this season and their first appearance in team history (at least since 1995 our records indicate). Vandy placed seventh at the Griak last weekend and topped then-No. 18 Penn State, then-No. 23 BYU, and then-No. 21 NC State.
-- Season-best rankings this week also go to: No. 12 Syracuse, No. 19 Michigan State, and No. 21 Minnesota.
-- The Pac-12 has six teams in the top 30 for the conference lead, followed by the Big East (5) and Big Ten (5).
-- Like for the men, this upcoming weekend will be an important one for women's teams around the country ... Our count has 23 ranked teams heading out this weekend ... Seven ranked teams are expected at Lehigh's Paul Short Run, including No. 1 Georgetown, No. 3 Providence, No. 5 Villanova, and No. 9 Duke ... Cal’s Women Leap to Tenth from Unranked in Latest National Coaches’ Poll
NEW ORLEANS – On Tuesday, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its week three national cross country coaches’ poll for the 2011 NCAA Division I season. The top five men's teams and the top nine women's teams stood their ground from last week's standing, but a few shifts occurred, including the jump from unranked to tenth by the women of Cal after their tied-first place performance at last weekend's Griak Invitational.
AROUND THE POLLS
MEN
-- Top five remained unchanged for the second-straight week.
-- Season-best positions on the poll were achieved this week by No. 6 Indiana, No. 9 NC State, No. 14 BYU, No. 20 Minnesota, and No. 26 Eastern Michigan. NC State was the winning team at Minnesota's Griak Invitational last weekend over then-No. 10 Portland and then-No. 24 Minnesota.
-- Michigan is in the top 30 for the first time this season, debuting at 28th.
-- Arizona State (tied 29th) returns to the poll for the first time since the preseason.
-- The Big East with six teams in the poll leads all conferences, followed by the Big Ten (5) and Pac-12 (4).
-- This weekend will be a busy one as 27 ranked teams are slated to be in action ... The Notre Dame Invitational is scheduled to have eight ranked teams on hand as No. 3 Stanford, No. 10 Florida State, and No. 12 Princeton headline the group ... Lehigh's Paul Short Run is expected to have eight ranked teams, including a split Princeton group, in tow as well as No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 5 Iona ... Oklahoma is also listed for the Cowboy Jamboree which has six ranked teams on the docket, including top-ranked host Oklahoma State and No. 6 Indiana ... No. 2 Wisconsin will visit No. 8 Oregon for the Bill Dellinger Invitational ... No. 7 Colorado hosts the Rocky Mountain Shootout ... No. 9 NC State stays near home with the Great American Cross Country Festival in Raleigh.
WOMEN
-- The top nine in the poll were unchanged for the second-straight week.
-- Cal leaped from unranked (but receiving votes) to the tenth spot in the poll after managing a first-place tie with No. 8 Iowa State at the Griak Invitational. Cal defeated seven ranked teams, including then-No. 10 Arizona. The ranking is the Golden Bears' highest-ever poll ranking (since 1995), topping their previous best of No. 22 last year. Cal's best showing at the NCAA Championships was ninth in 1988.
-- Arkansas was also unranked last week, but now stands at 18th after defeating then-No. 19 West Virginia and then-No. 29 at last weekend's Toledo Inter-Regional Bubble Buster.
-- Vanderbilt makes their first appearance in the coaches' poll this season and their first appearance in team history (at least since 1995 our records indicate). Vandy placed seventh at the Griak last weekend and topped then-No. 18 Penn State, then-No. 23 BYU, and then-No. 21 NC State.
-- Season-best rankings this week also go to: No. 12 Syracuse, No. 19 Michigan State, and No. 21 Minnesota.
-- The Pac-12 has six teams in the top 30 for the conference lead, followed by the Big East (5) and Big Ten (5).
-- Like for the men, this upcoming weekend will be an important one for women's teams around the country ... Our count has 23 ranked teams heading out this weekend ... BERKELEY - After securing a tie for first place at the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday, the Cal women's cross country team moved from receiving votes to 10th in the country in the latest national poll released Tuesday.
The Bears, who matched No. 8 Iowa State top the victory platform, defeated seven ranked teams during the race held in Minneapolis, Minn., including then-No. 10 Arizona and then-No. 11 Washington. According to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Cal's rating is the team's highest ever (since 1995), topping its previous best of No. 22 last year.
The Bears are aiming for their first NCAA Championships berth since 1988 when they placed ninth. Cal's only other trip to nationals came in 1984 with a 15th-place showing.
With six teams among the top 30, the Pac-12 had more ranked schools than any other conference. In addition to No. 10 Cal, others in the poll are: No. 4 Colorado, No. 6 Stanford, No. 11 Arizona, No. 17 Oregon and No. 20 Washington.
The Bears are off from competition until Oct. 14 when they travel to Madison, Wis., for the Badger Invitational.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week three regional rankings for the NCAA Division I 2011 season on Monday. For the second-straight week, no new number ones were named.
New to their respective region’s top 15 this week are the following:
MEN – Loyola Marymount (West).
WOMEN – Oklahoma (Midwest), Air Force (Mountain), East Carolina (Southeast)
The national week three coaches’ poll will be released on Tuesday.
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released week three regional rankings for the NCAA Division I 2011 season on Monday. For the second-straight week, no new number ones were named.
New to their respective region’s top 15 this week are the following:
MEN – Loyola Marymount (West).
WOMEN – Oklahoma (Midwest), Air Force (Mountain), East Carolina (Southeast)
The national week three coaches’ poll will be released on Tuesday.
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
