Bear Women Second, Men Fifth in Cross Country Race

STANFORD - Junior Deborah Maier took runner-up honors at the Stanford Invitational Saturday, helping the Cal women's cross country team to a second-place finish in the team standings in the 37th annual competition held on the Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bear men, led by Michael Coe's fifth-place result, were fifth.
"I thought our results were very encouraging," head coach Tony Sandoval said. "We demonstrated that we have a solid group on both sides. We know we have some strategic adjustements to make before we go to the Pre-NCAA meet in three weeks."
Maier, a first-team All-Pac-10 performer for Cal last season, covered the 6000-meter course in 20:10, just four seconds behind winner Kathy Kroeger of Stanford. UCLA's Shannon Murakami was 24 seconds in back of Maier in third in 20:34.
The Bears placed two other runners in the top 20, with sophomore Laurynne Chetelat taking 19th (21:23) and senior Rowena Tam 20th (21:26). Chetelat was competing on her former home course, as she transferred to Cal from Stanford after her freshman year.
Taylor Dutch (24th, 21:33) and Michelle Davis (30th, 21:44) also contributed points for the Bears, while Chelsea Reilly (39th, 21:56), Heather Cerney (40th; 21:57), Taylor Bryson (69th, 22:37) and Crystal Esparza (85th, 22:50) rounded out the Cal lineup.
Stanford claimed the team title with 41 points, followed by Cal with 86 and Long Beach State with 127. The Bears, who won their first two meets of the season - the USF Invitational and the Sac State Hornet Jamboree - also finished second to Stanford in last year's race.
Coe, a senior in his first cross country race since 2008 after redshirting last season, crossed the line in 23:29 after 8000 meters. Senior Kari Karlsson was the only other Bears in the top 20, placing 20th in 24:18. Sophomores Cody Schmidt (41st, 24:40) and Matt Petersen (51st, 24:57) were next, followed by senior Steve Sodaro in 60th (25:04). The remainder of the Cal results included Simon Schmidt (78th, 25:15), Maxime Chevee (84th, 25:21), J.P. Slater (131st, 25:58) and J.J. Solorzano (132nd, 25:58. There were a total of 231 individual competitors in the race.
Stanford also captured the men's crown with 31 points. Arkansas was second (43), followed by Northern Arizona (123), UCLA (130) and Cal (151).
"The women, at this point, are farther along than expected," Sandoval said. "The men's team is in recovery from a bout of sickness this past week and we know they are a quality team. Deborah Maier and Michael Coe ran exceptionally well and both can be in the national picture, individually. We'll need their leadership to get us to nationals."
The Bears return to action at the Pre-NCAA Invitational Oct. 16 in Terre Haute, Ind., site of the NCAA championships in November.

Stanford, Calif. - In the first big race of the season for the Stanford cross-country team, the Cardinal showed that it will be a force to reckoned with this season by sweeping both races. The No. 1 Cardinal men scored just 31 points in defeating a pair of ranked teams, while the No. 14 Cardinal women cruised to a victory with 41 points.
"I was really pleased with both teams," said head coach Jason Dunn. "They did a really good job of running and competing as a team together."
The Cardinal men looked strong throughout, running as a team and building strength over the 8,000-meter course. Last season's national runner-up, David McNeil of Northern Arizona, took the race out hard, but instead of following him, Stanford hung back and ran as a team. Chris Derrick, Elliott Heath and Jacob Riley ran shoulder to shoulder, controlling the pace of the chase group.
The Cardinal battled with No. 15 Arkansas for the team title, but pulled away over the last three kilometers. Stanford finished with a 31-43 advantage over the Razorbacks, despite it being much closer midway through the race. No. 4 Northern Arizona placed third with 125 points, but did not run its full `A' team.
Derrick ran with McNeil at the NCAA meet last year, but instead of trying for an early season showdown, chose to help pace with his teammates. McNeil built a lead of as much as 30 seconds, but the Stanford crew closed hard over the final three kilometers and finished just four seconds back. Heath, Riley and Derrick placed 2-3-4, all with identical times of 23:22.
Placing just out of the lead group was Benjamin Johnson who was eighth. Johnson hung with the leaders most of the way and closed hard to finish with a time of 23:41.
Rounding out the scoring runners was Miles Unterreiner who placed 15th with a time of 24:05. He finished side by side with Stanford freshman Erik Olson, who ran unattached.
Other runners in the top 25 for Stanford were Andrew Berberick and J.T. Sullivan who finished 24th and 25th. They ran identical times of 24:26.
In addition to Olson, the Cardinal got great runs from unattached freshmen, Graham Bazzell and Micheal Atchoo who placed 37th and 55th. Redshirt freshman Tyler Stutzman placed 50th, running with a Stanford jersey for the first time.

After placing third last season in her first collegiate race, Kathy Kroeger was even better this season, taking the individual title. The sophomore covered the 6,000-meter course in 20:06 defeat Deborah Maier of California by four seconds.
"It was a great first race for Kathy," added Dunn. "She has come in really fit."
Finishing as Stanford's No. 2 runner was Georgia Griffin who placed fifth overall with a time of 20:45. Griffin placed 12th each of the last two years and ran the fastest 6K time of her career.
The next four Cardinal runners were packed tightly together, finishing between 10th and 15th. Placing 10th and 12th were a pair of young runners, sophomore Alex Dunne and freshman Jessica Tonn. Dunne ran 21:02, while Tonn was just behind in 21:05. Veterans Alex Gits and Stephanie Marcy placed 14th and 15th with time of 21:12 and 21:14.
The seventh Stanford runner was Tate Murray, but she ran unattached, making Emilie Amaro the actual No. 7. Amaro placed 41st in 22:01, while Murray was 37th in 22:01. Madeline Duhon just missed the top seven, placing 42nd, just one second behind Amaro.
Overall it was a great day for both Cardinal teams, establishing themselves as national contenders. It was a good mix of returning runners showing continued improvement as well as several freshmen breaking onto the scene and performing well.
"The freshmen really stepped up," said Dunn. "Jessica Tonn ran great and our men's freshmen class is going to be really good."
The Cardinal will not compete for three weeks and next be seen at the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on October 16. The annual preview of the NCAA course will be a great chance to see how the Cardinal stack up against the rest of the nation.

Chevron Houston Marathon's Run for a Reason Program Surpasses $11 Million Milestone for Charity
HOUSTON (Sept. 24, 2010) - The Houston Marathon Committee announced today that the Chevron Houston Marathon's Run for a Reason charity program surpassed the $11-million mark since its inception in 1995. In a mere two months since fundraising began on July 27, more than $650,000 has been raised for the 52 official charities.
This most recent milestone follows a record-breaking 2010 event which generated $1.8 million for 46 charities.
"Since January of 2008, our event has helped local charities raise more than $4.8 million," said Wade Morehead, executive director of the Houston Marathon Committee. "The rapid growth of this program during a difficult economic climate can be directly attributed to the passionate runners in this community and their philanthropic spirit."
Linking runners with participating nonprofits, the Run for a Reason program provides an avenue for race participants, individuals and organizations to collect donations on behalf of an official charity. In addition, the program offers a platform for charities to raise awareness and educate others about their cause.
As the success of the Run for a Reason program continues to grow, so has interest from the nonprofit sector as charities are learning more about the program's benefits. The Houston Marathon Committee received more than 120 applications to become an official 2011 charity and more than 85 requests for the 2012 program since June.
The 39th annual Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon and El Paso Corporation 5K will take place January 30, 2011.

Mr. English is the head coach of the Eisenhower Cross Country team. He has been coaching Cross Country and Track & Field since 1978. He spent his fist 7 years coaching at Carroll High School where he coached 3 girl's teams and 1 boy's team to State Cross Country titles. He has been coaching at Eisenhower since 1985 where he has added 5 more State Cross Country titles (4 girl's, 1 boy's) and a girl's State Track & Field title to his record. Mr. English is currently ranked 9th on the Washington State All-Time Coaches list (based on state XC performances) and was named the National High School Girls Coach of the Year in 2001. Mr. English is a science teacher at Eisenhower teaching honors biology and anatomy.
Mr. English started competing in running events in Ireland at the age of 14. In 1971 he was the Irish School's National Steeplechase Champion and in 1974 he was the Irish Men’s Steeplechase Champion. In 1974 he received an athletic scholarship to attend Washington State University where he competed in 4 NCAA cross country seasons from 1973 to 1977.

Pac-10 Edges Out Big 12 and SEC in Statistical Analysis
BARRINGTON, R.I. (September 21, 2010) -- The Pac-10 Conference earned top honors as the No. 1 Division I women's track & field conference in a statistical analysis done by RunInCollege.com.
The analysis looked at the first and sixth place performance in every individual event at this year's Division I Outdoor Conference Championship meets. RunInCollege.com then ranked all 30 conferences in every event, taking an average ranking of each conference to determine the final rankings.
The Pac-10 finished with 142 total places (average ranking of 3.74), one spot ahead of the Big 12 at 143 total places (average ranking 3.76) and three spots ahead of the SEC at 145 total places (average ranking of 3.82). (See complete rankings below)
"We looked at 38 sets of data in determining this ranking," said Steve Turgeon, founder of RunInCollege.com. "We looked at both the top performance and the sixth-place performance so we could take into account the strength of the field. And after all that, it's amazing that the top three conferences were separated by only three points."
RunInCollege.com also ranked the conferences in the sprints (100, 200, 400), the distance races (1500, 5K, 10K) and throwing events (Hammer, Discus, Shot, Javelin). The SEC ranked first in the sprints, followed by the big 12 and the ACC. In the distance rankings, the Pac-10 was No. 1 followed by the Big 10 and the Big 12 tied at No. 2. Stanford cross country is set to host the 37th edition of the Stanford Invitational this Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course. The annual meet is one of the largest cross country meets of the season with its combination of high school and collegiate competition. This year's collegiate races should be highly competitive with several ranked teams, including the No. 1 Stanford men and the No. 13 Stanford women. The 8,000-meter men's collegiate race will take place at 10:50 am, while the women's 6,000-meter collegiate race is at 11:30am. High school races begin at 9:00am and will go throughout the day.
THE FIELD
The No. 1 Stanford men swept the meet last season, but will have a much more difficult time this season as No. 4 Northern Arizona is also in this year's field. Northern Arizona is led by national runner-up from a year ago David McNeil and has a deep and talented team. McNeil and others are entered, but it remains to be seen if NAU will indeed run their full `A' team. If they do, it would be an early showdown of two of the favorites for a national title on the men's side. Other ranked teams entered on the men's side are No. 15 Arkansas as well as UCLA, California, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and Long Beach State who are all ranked in the top-15 in the West Region. On the women's side, the No. 13 Cardinal will look to once again win their home meet. The Cardinal are the only nationally ranked team in the field, but will see good competition from several teams ranked in the West Region. California, UC Davis, San Francisco, Loyola Marymount, UCLA, Cal Poly and Long Beach State are all ranked in the top-15 in the region.
LAST SEASON AT THE STANFORD INVITATIONAL
Last season both the men and women took care of business in convincing fashion at their home meet. The men scored a perfect 15 points, while second place California had 101 and UC Davis had 102. Chris Derrick took the individual title, but finished in a group with teammates, Benjamin Johnson, Jacob Riley and Brendan Gregg in 23:54. Miles Unterreiner rounded out the top five with a time of 24:10. On the women's side, Stanford scored 24 points compared to 100 for California who placed second. Unnatthaced runner Tara Erdmann took the individual title, while Kathy Kroeger (20:35) led Stanford with a third-place finish. Also in the top ten were Kate Niehaus (20:39) who placed fourth, Alex Dunne (20:44) who was sixth, Alex Gits (20:50) who was seventh and Stephanie Marcy (20:53) who was ninth.
STANFORD COURSE RECORDS
The men will run the 8,000-meter course, which has a record time of 23:03.1 set by Galen Rupp of Oregon at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships. The Stanford record on the 8K course was set by Neflatem Araia with a time of 23:15.4, also at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships. For the women's 6,000-meter course, Stanford's Arianna Lambie has run the two fastest times. Her time of 19:29.3 at the 2005 NCAA West Regional is easily the record. Lambie not only holds the two fastest times by anyone, but the four fastest times by a Stanford athlete.
OPENING MARKS
While the full Stanford teams will be making its debut on Saturday, a small group did run at the Jim Heval Twilight Invitational at Nevada on September 4. Despite running just five runner per race, the Cardinal won both the men's and women's races. Alex Gits took the individual title on the women's side to lead Stanford to just 27 points. On the men's side, J.T. Sullivan placed second overall to lead the men. The Cardinal finished with 34 points, compared to 37 from second-place UC Riverside.
MEN'S NOTES
The Stanford men return six of the seven runners from last season's team that competed at the national championships. The Cardinal were ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of last year, before inexplicably falling to 10th at the NCAA meet. With that as a memory, the Cardinal are dedicated to returning to the NCAA meet to win an NCAA title this season. Stanford has not won an NCAA title on the men's side since 2003, but has the talent to do so this season. The Cardinal have five All-Americans on its roster, including Chris Derrick who placed third at the NCAA meet last season. Elliott Heath was also an All-American in cross country, while Derrick, Heath, Jacob Riley, J.T. Sullivan and Dylan Ferris earned All-America honors on the track. In addition, Brendan Gregg, Benjamin Johnson and Miles Unterreiner were each in the top five in cross country at different times last season.
WOMEN'S NOTES
The Cardinal women are now two years removed from its run of three consecutive national titles. After losing so many talented runners to graduation, the women have been young and rebuilding the past two years. Now, they appear ready to return to national prominence this season. The Cardinal return five of seven runners from last year's NCAA meet, including Stephanie Marcy and Kathy Kroeger who earned All-America honors during the track season. In addition, senior Alex Gits is back for her final year as the final link to the 2007 national title team where she was a scoring runner. Also returning are Alex Dunne who had an outstanding freshmen season and veterans of the NCAA meet, Georgia Griffin and Emilie Amaro.

Elliott Heath was also an All-American in cross country, while Derrick, Heath, Jacob Riley, J.T. Sullivan and Dylan Ferris earned All-America honors on the track. In addition, Brendan Gregg, Benjamin Johnson and Miles Unterreiner were each in the top five in cross country at different times last season.
WOMEN'S NOTES
The Cardinal women are now two years removed from its run of three consecutive national titles. After losing so many talented runners to graduation, the women have been young and rebuilding the past two years. Now, they appear ready to return to national prominence this season. The Cardinal return five of seven runners from last year's NCAA meet, including Stephanie Marcy and Kathy Kroeger who earned All-America honors during the track season. In addition, senior Alex Gits is back for her final year as the final link to the 2007 national title team where she was a scoring runner. Also returning are Alex Dunne who had an outstanding freshmen season and veterans of the NCAA meet, Georgia Griffin and Emilie Amaro.

Rick Milam Memorial Service

The memorial service for Rick Milam was held in the Los Gatos High School gymnasium on Sunday, September 19.
The gymnasium was nearly filled to capacity.
Tony Nunes, who was Rick's employer at NBN Sports, welcomed everyone.
Mike Dudley, co-meet director of Los Gatos meets; Willie Harmatz (-24:37), who hosted the CCS Top 8 meet for 32 years with Rick; and Rick's older brother Leroy Milam (25:55-) gave their remembrances.
25:17- Don Bowden, American's first sub-four minute miler, was introduced by Tony.
There was an open mike. Some of the speakers included:
