Goucher named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Kara Goucher has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after finishing third in the Boston Marathon Monday in Boston, Mass.
The 2007 World Outdoor 10,000m bronze medalist, Goucher took third in the women's marathon in 2 hours 32 minutes 25 seconds. It was the top finish for an American woman since Kim Jones took second in 1993.
Now in its eighth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

Team USA seeks redemption at USA vs. the World
PHILADELPHIA - The relay match-ups that you didn't get to see at the 2008 Olympic Games are on their way to Philadelphia. On Saturday, April 25, at the 10th edition of USA vs. the World at the 113th Penn Relays, Team USA will look to take their first steps towards redemption in the men's and women's 4x100m relays.
With a record 13 nations set to compete, including Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, Team USA is out to reclaim their stake as the dominant relay force Saturday during the first event of the 2009 USATF Outdoor Visa Championship Series. USA vs. The World at the Penn Relays will be broadcast live on ESPN2 from 4-6 p.m. Eastern Time.
Events at this year's USA vs. the World include the Nike men's 4x100m, the Visa women's 4x100m, the Nike men's 4x400m, the Visa women's 4x400m, the men's distance medley relay and the women's sprint medley relay.
The races that could have been
2008 Olympic 100m and 200m bronze medalist Walter Dix, 2004 Olympic 4x100m gold medalist and two-time World Outdoor gold medalist Darvis Patton and three-time Olympic medalist Shawn Crawford lead Team USA Nike men's 4x100m relay pool that will take on the 2008 Olympic Games gold and silver medal teams from Jamaica and Trindad & Tobago, respectively. Each team will have three of the four team members from Beijing with Jamaica bringing Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell (former world record holder) while Trinidad & Tobago's team will feature Richard Thompson, Marc Burns and Emmanuel Callender. Also in Team USA's pool is two-time Olympic 110mH silver medalist Terrence Trammell.
On the women's side, two-time Olympic 200m silver medalist Allyson Felix and 2004 Olympic 100m silver medalist and two-time World Outdoor medalist Lauryn Williams lead Team USA's lineup that also includes 2005 World Outdoor 4x100m gold medalist Muna Lee and 2000 Olympic bronze medalist and two-time World Outdoor 4x100m medalist Torri Edwards. They will be faced with the Jamaican contingent including 2008 Olympic 100m gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser and Beijing 100m bronze medalist Kerron Stewart. Stewart was on the receiving end of a botched baton exchange in Beijing that forced the Jamaican's out of medal contention. Also in the mix for the Visa women's 4x100m will be Nigeria, who is bringing three of four team members from the bronze-medal winning team at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Potent 4x400m lineups
The 2008 Olympic 400m gold medalist, LaShawn Merritt leads a Nike men's 4x400m lineup that includes two-time Olympic 400mH champion Angelo Taylor and surprise 2008 Olympic bronze medalist David Neville, all of whom were part of the gold-medal winning 4x400m in Beijing. Also in the mix are 2008 Olympic 400mH silver medalist and 2007 World champion Kerron Clement and 2004 Olympic and two-time World Outdoor 4x400m gold medalist Darold Williamson. They will be challenged by the Bahamas who are bringing all four members of their silver medal-winning team from Beijing.
In the Visa women's 4x400m, Team USA brings 2008 Olympic 400m bronze medalist and #1-world ranked Sanya Richards, Allyson Felix and Natasha Hastings. Team USA seeks redemption at USA vs. the World
PHILADELPHIA - The relay match-ups that you didn't get to see at the 2008 Olympic Games are on their way to Philadelphia. On Saturday, April 25, at the 10th edition of USA vs. the World at the 113th Penn Relays, Team USA will look to take their first steps towards redemption in the men's and women's 4x100m relays.
With a record 13 nations set to compete, including Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, Team USA is out to reclaim their stake as the dominant relay force Saturday during the first event of the 2009 USATF Outdoor Visa Championship Series. USA vs. The World at the Penn Relays will be broadcast live on ESPN2 from 4-6 p.m. Eastern Time.
Events at this year's USA vs. the World include the Nike men's 4x100m, the Visa women's 4x100m, the Nike men's 4x400m, the Visa women's 4x400m, the men's distance medley relay and the women's sprint medley relay.
The races that could have been
2008 Olympic 100m and 200m bronze medalist Walter Dix, 2004 Olympic 4x100m gold medalist and two-time World Outdoor gold medalist Darvis Patton and three-time Olympic medalist Shawn Crawford lead Team USA Nike men's 4x100m relay pool that will take on the 2008 Olympic Games gold and silver medal teams from Jamaica and Trindad & Tobago, respectively. Each team will have three of the four team members from Beijing with Jamaica bringing Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell (former world record holder) while Trinidad & Tobago's team will feature Richard Thompson, Marc Burns and Emmanuel Callender. Also in Team USA's pool is two-time Olympic 110mH silver medalist Terrence Trammell.
On the women's side, two-time Olympic 200m silver medalist Allyson Felix and 2004 Olympic 100m silver medalist and two-time World Outdoor medalist Lauryn Williams lead Team USA's lineup that also includes 2005 World Outdoor 4x100m gold medalist Muna Lee and 2000 Olympic bronze medalist and two-time World Outdoor 4x100m medalist Torri Edwards. They will be faced with the Jamaican contingent including 2008 Olympic 100m gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser and Beijing 100m bronze medalist Kerron Stewart. Stewart was on the receiving end of a botched baton exchange in Beijing that forced the Jamaican's out of medal contention. Also in the mix for the Visa women's 4x100m will be Nigeria, who is bringing three of four team members from the bronze-medal winning team at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Potent 4x400m lineups
The 2008 Olympic 400m gold medalist, LaShawn Merritt leads a Nike men's 4x400m lineup that includes two-time Olympic 400mH champion Angelo Taylor and surprise 2008 Olympic bronze medalist David Neville, all of whom were part of the gold-medal winning 4x400m in Beijing. Also in the mix are 2008 Olympic 400mH silver medalist and 2007 World champion Kerron Clement and 2004 Olympic and two-time World Outdoor 4x400m gold medalist Darold Williamson. They will be challenged by the Bahamas who are bringing all four members of their silver medal-winning team from Beijing.

INDIANAPOLIS - The USA Track & Field Foundation has presented Elite Athlete Development Grants to ten athletes, Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic and Chairman Bob Greifeld announced Tuesday.
Athletes receiving $5,000 grants include Adam Kuehl (Tucson, Ariz. - discus throw), Alice Schmidt (Coronado, Calif. - 800 meters) and Suzy Powell (Modesto, Calif. - discus throw).

"One key aim of the USATF Foundation is to encourage American athletes to pursue their dreams of Olympic greatness," said USATF Foundation Director Chris Borch. "In the difficult process of selecting athletes to receive grants, we've seen there is never a shortage of talent or the willingness by athletes to sacrifice or work hard. Instead, the shortfall is almost always financial."
The Foundation Elite Athlete Grant Program contributes to the pursuit of world-class performances by American post-collegiate track and field athletes. Athletes must meet minimum performance standards to be eligible and must also participate in the Win With Integrity youth outreach program.
The USATF Foundation provides a means to attract and guide funds to new and innovative track and field programs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for youth athletes, emerging elite athletes and anti-doping education. The Foundation depends upon donations from its Board of Directors and from generous fans of track & field.

Goucher, Hall both third at Boston Marathon
BOSTON - Kara Goucher was third in the women's race and Ryan Hall third among the men Monday in the 113th running of the Boston Marathon, marking the first time in 24 years that Americans appeared on both podiums at this historic race.
Olympic fourth-place finisher Deriba Merga of Ethiopia won the men's crown in 2:08:42, followed by Daniel Rono of Kenya in 2:09:32 and Hall in 2:09:40. Salina Kosgei of Kenya won the women's race in a dramatic sprint finish, hitting the line in 2:32:16, one step and one second ahead of defending champion Dire Tune of Ethiopia in 2:32:17 and Goucher third in 2:32:25. Kosgei and Tune bumped elbows several times in the final meters, and Tune - who won hereby only 2 seconds in 2008 - collapsed just two steps after the finish.
Goucher was the first American woman to place in the top three since Kim Jones was second in 1993, while Hall matched 2004 Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi's third place from 2006.
In 1985, a total of five Americans finished in the men's and women's top three in much less international and significantly slower races. Gary Tuttle (2:19:11) and Mark Helgeston (2:21:15) went 2-3 in the men's race and American women swept the top 10 places, led by Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach (2:34:06), Lynne Huntington (2:42:15) and Karen Dunn (2:42:27). American men occupied eight of the top 10 spots in that year.
Tactics rule women's race
The women's race began resembling nothing so much as a training run, with the entire elite pack coming through 1 mile in 6:25 and two in 12:28. Elva Dryer, Colleen De Reuck and Kara Goucher ran at or near the lead for much of the race as the pack came through 10 km in 37:05, 10 miles in 59:47 and the half marathon on 1:18:12.
Goucher remained with the leaders as De Reuck and Dyer dropped off the pace, but between miles 16 and 17, De Reuck came back to take the lead, shadowed by Goucher. After passing 18 miles in 1:47:05, Goucher took the lead five minutes later. Over the next six miles, the pace quickened as the pack shrank from 10 to five at 23 miles, which Goucher led in 2:15:29 after a 5:20 mile. The American threw down a 5:08 24th mile to make it a three-woman race between herself, Tune and Kosgei.
The final mile provided dramatic moments with nearly every stride. The two-time defending Millrose Games champion in the mile, Goucher ran at the head of the three-woman pack as they gathered themselves for a final sprint down Boylston Street. Just before the turn onto Boylston, Goucher appeared to begin laboring, drawing a groan of concern from the press room as she moved back to third.
With just over 800 meters to go, Goucher tossed off her gloves in her attempt to catch Tune and Kosgei. Although she expected to have kick left in her legs, Goucher could not match the strides of her competitors. At the finish, she was not consoled by her top-three placing.
"I'm proud of what I did," said Goucher, who held back tears as she described the amazing support received from family, friends, her coach and Nike. "I wanted it so much for them. I'm proud of how I did, and I raced the best I could. I just wanted to be the one who won for everybody."
A 45-year-old, four-time Olympian, the ageless De Reuck also finished in the top 10, finishing eighth in 2:35:37 as the top masters woman.
Quick start to men's race
The men's race developed in a way that sharply contrasted with their distaff counterparts. Unafraid of a fast pace, a looming headwind, a field that included a four-time champion and the potentially punishing downhills in the early miles, Olympic Trials champion Ryan Hall took the lead from the first step. The 6-0 Californian posted sub-4:50 miles early on and came through 5 km in 14:34, well under course-record pace. The 10km mark passed in 29:28, or 4:46 pace, as 13 men occupied the lead pack.
It wasn't until mile 8 that anyone started a concerted effort to take the lead from Hall, when Gashaw Asfaw of Ethiopia and four-time champion Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya began to push. At 15 km, the pack was still on 2:05 marathon pace (44:45), but by the half they had slowed to 1:03:39.
Merga began his race in earnest in the last half. He worked with countryman Solomon Molla through 16 miles, passed in 1:18:11, after which point Hall had dropped as far back as ninth.
Merga, Molla and Rono continued to roll at the front, but Hall began to claw his way back. By 20 miles passed by Merga in 1:37:57, Hall had moved to third, ahead of Molla and roughly 30 seconds behind Merga. The Merga-Rono-Hall running order remained intact through the finish and Merga enjoyed a one-man show in the final miles.
Hall was pleased with his third-place finish . "I definitely felt like a rookie out there," he said. "I was learning as I went. I've been on the course before and got to jog the last 20 miles, but jogging it and racing it are two different things. I was in a lot of pain the last 10k. I've got some work to do but I'm young and I'll be back. I learned a lot."
"My plan was to run my own race from the get-go. I like to run fast, and I was like, I'm going to use these downhills and I'm going to find my right effort level. It was a tough day out there for everyone. The wind was in your face the whole way."
Fellow Olympian Brian Sell was the second American at Boston, placing 14th in 2:16:31.

Cody Cunnington (Sir Francis Drake, San Anselmo) 15-6
Cunnington soars over 15 feet 6 inches
finishes second in Mt. Sac Invitational
Very few athletes from our county have ever won an event at in Los Angeles at Arcadia or Mt. Sac. The competition is similiar to a state final. Cody Cunnington of Drake has now joined those few from Marin who have succeeded. His 15 foot 6 inch clearance is the second best vault in county prep history, just 1 inch from the top mark.
Cody had two good vaults at 16 feet. He is no longer is wondering if he will clear that height this season. Cody thinks he should have made it on Saturday night.
Cunnington isn't just a vaulter. He ran a strong 100 meter relay leg early in the afternoon, then enjoyed moving Drake into first place after the third leg in the 4 x 400m relay with a 51.2 time. This moves Cody well up on the Drake "all-time" list.
Oh, the time was 10:20 p.m. Or close to that. His 15 foot 6 inch clearance came a couple of hours earlier.

PROUD HARVARD DAD
It's not everyone who becomes a Harvard Dad at 68 years of age.
My son Andrew Conning, 37, has been admitted to the Doctor of Education program in the Education Policy, Leadership and Instructional Practice concentration at the Harvard Graduate School of Eduacation to pursue full-time study for the 2009-2010 academic year.
He will be part of a cohort of students who bring with them not only impressive professional experience and excellent academic training, but also dedication to the profession of education.
Andy wants to become a college administrator working with foreign students.
Andy graduated from Berkeley High School in 1989. He ran cross country and track for me for three years at Berkeley High. He graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University in 1994. He received a Masters Degree in Anthropology in Mexico City. He has lived outside the United States since his graduation from Georgetown. He has studied and/or taught in Mexico, Japan, and China.
His grandfather and great grandfather were Professors at the University of California in Berkeley and Davis. His grandfather, Dr. Percy Munson Barr, was a Professor of Forestry at Berkeley. His great grandfather Dr. Frank Adams founded the Commonwealth Club of California.
His uncle Dr. Donald Barr is an Associate Professor (Teaching) of Sociology at Stanford.

Three track Hall of Famers nominated for U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
Three members of the National track & Field Hall of Fame have been nominated for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and Allstate Insurance Company on Thursday announced a star-studded nominee list of 15 individuals, five teams and five Paralympians, including Olympic track and field legends Michael Johnson, Valerie Brisco-Hooks and Willye White.
The current world and American record holder in the 400 meters and the 200m American-record holder, Michael Johnson became the first man in history to win both those events at the same Olympics in 1996 at Atlanta. He became the only man to repeat as Olympic 400m champion when he won the gold in 2000. Johnson, who set the 200m world record on two occasions, is a three-time Olympian and four-time gold medalist. A five-time World Outdoor Championships team member, Johnson won the 200m gold medal in 1991 and '95, the 400m gold medal in 1993, '95, '97, '99, and World Outdoor Championships 4x400m gold medals in 1993, '95, '99. A five-time USA Outdoor 200m champion, Johnson won the USA Outdoor 400m title four times, and he won a quartet of USA Indoor 400m titles as well. He was world ranked 11 times at 200m (#1 five times), and 400m (#1 10 times).
More than a decade before Michael Johnson galvanized world attention with his 200m/400m doubles, Valerie Brisco-Hooks became the first person to perform that feat in the Olympics. Her stage was ideal: the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, just miles from her home at that time. She set American records in both individual events, running 21.81 in the 200m and 48.83 in the 400m. She won her third gold medal that year when she anchored the U.S. 4x400m relay team that set an American record with its time of 3:18.28. In 1988, Brisco-Hooks won her fourth Olympic medal when she ran the third leg on the 4x400m relay team that broke the world record but finished second to the USSR team. She became the first American woman to break 50 seconds in the 400 meters with her time of 49.83. In 1985, she set an indoor world record of 52.99 in the 440-yard run, and she was the national champion in the outdoor 400m in 1986. In 1987, she won a relay gold medal at the Pan American Games and a bronze medal as a member of the 4x400m relay at the World Outdoor Championships.
The first woman to compete for the U.S. in five Olympics, Willye White was the top American long jumper during the 1960s. She was a sophomore in high school when she first appeared in Olympic competition at Melbourne in 1956, taking the silver medal. After enrolling at Tennessee State University under Hall of Fame coach Ed Temple, she appeared in the 1960 Olympics in the long jump but did not make the final. Four years later, she won a silver medal in the 4x100m relay after a 12th-place in the long jump. She was 11th in the long jump in 1968 and 1972, her other two Olympic appearances. She competed in three Pan American Games, finishing third in 1959, first in 1963, and third in 1967. A veteran of 34 international teams (including 11 consecutive years of competing in the USA-USSR dual meet), White won a dozen National AAU long jump titles, 11 outdoors. She also set the national long jump record on seven occasions. A member of the Black Sports Hall of Fame and the Women's Sports Foundation Hall of Fame, she established the Willye White Foundation in 1991 to help young girls develop self-esteem and become more productive citizens within their communities.
From now through June 16, fans can cast their votes for the 2009 class of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame online at www.teamusa.org. The inducted class will include five individuals, one team and one Paralympian, as well as three additional individuals: a coach, veteran and special contributor. The inductees will be revealed in early July and will be honored at a black-tie induction ceremony on August 12 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame presented by Allstate is the only national sports Hall of Fame that includes fan voting.
The August 12 induction ceremony will honor the 2009 U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame class and introduce a new international award - the Olive Branch Award - given to an individual or individuals who best represent the international ideals of the Olympic Games by working to build a peaceful and better world through sport. Also new to 2009, the induction ceremony will feature a special fundraising banquet to benefit Chicago 2016, Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Three track Hall of Famers nominated for U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
Three members of the National track & Field Hall of Fame have been nominated for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and Allstate Insurance Company on Thursday announced a star-studded nominee list of 15 individuals, five teams and five Paralympians, including Olympic track and field legends Michael Johnson, Valerie Brisco-Hooks and Willye White.
The current world and American record holder in the 400 meters and the 200m American-record holder, Michael Johnson became the first man in history to win both those events at the same Olympics in 1996 at Atlanta. He became the only man to repeat as Olympic 400m champion when he won the gold in 2000. Johnson, who set the 200m world record on two occasions, is a three-time Olympian and four-time gold medalist. A five-time World Outdoor Championships team member, Johnson won the 200m gold medal in 1991 and '95, the 400m gold medal in 1993, '95, '97, '99, and World Outdoor Championships 4x400m gold medals in 1993, '95, '99. A five-time USA Outdoor 200m champion, Johnson won the USA Outdoor 400m title four times, and he won a quartet of USA Indoor 400m titles as well. He was world ranked 11 times at 200m (#1 five times), and 400m (#1 10 times).
More than a decade before Michael Johnson galvanized world attention with his 200m/400m doubles, Valerie Brisco-Hooks became the first person to perform that feat in the Olympics. Her stage was ideal: the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, just miles from her home at that time. She set American records in both individual events, running 21.81 in the 200m and 48.83 in the 400m. She won her third gold medal that year when she anchored the U.S. 4x400m relay team that set an American record with its time of 3:18.28. In 1988, Brisco-Hooks won her fourth Olympic medal when she ran the third leg on the 4x400m relay team that broke the world record but finished second to the USSR team. She became the first American woman to break 50 seconds in the 400 meters with her time of 49.83. In 1985, she set an indoor world record of 52.99 in the 440-yard run, and she was the national champion in the outdoor 400m in 1986. In 1987, she won a relay gold medal at the Pan American Games and a bronze medal as a member of the 4x400m relay at the World Outdoor Championships.
The first woman to compete for the U.S. in five Olympics, Willye White was the top American long jumper during the 1960s. She was a sophomore in high school when she first appeared in Olympic competition at Melbourne in 1956, taking the silver medal. After enrolling at Tennessee State University under Hall of Fame coach Ed Temple, she appeared in the 1960 Olympics in the long jump but did not make the final. Four years later, she won a silver medal in the 4x100m relay after a 12th-place in the long jump. She was 11th in the long jump in 1968 and 1972, her other two Olympic appearances. She competed in three Pan American Games, finishing third in 1959, first in 1963, and third in 1967. A veteran of 34 international teams (including 11 consecutive years of competing in the USA-USSR dual meet), White won a dozen National AAU long jump titles, 11 outdoors. She also set the national long jump record on seven occasions. A member of the Black Sports Hall of Fame and the Women's Sports Foundation Hall of Fame, she established the Willye White Foundation in 1991 to help young girls develop self-esteem and become more productive citizens within their communities.
From now through June 16, fans can cast their votes for the 2009 class of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame online at www.teamusa.org. The inducted class will include five individuals, one team and one Paralympian, as well as three additional individuals: a coach, veteran and special contributor. The inductees will be revealed in early July and will be honored at a black-tie induction ceremony on August 12 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame presented by Allstate is the only national sports Hall of Fame that includes fan voting.
The August 12 induction ceremony will honor the 2009 U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame class and introduce a new international award - the Olive Branch Award - given to an individual or individuals who best represent the international ideals of the Olympic Games by working to build a peaceful and better world through sport. Also new to 2009, the induction ceremony will feature a special fundraising banquet to benefit Chicago 2016, Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Hall, Goucher lead U.S. hopefuls at 113th B.A.A. Boston Marathon
INIDANAPOLIS - The B.A.A. Boston Marathon has seen a great deal of running history in 113 years and Monday's race will no doubt see more. The top U.S. entries, Ryan Hall (Big Bear Lake, Calif.) and Kara Goucher (Portland, Ore.) have already made marathon history of their own but will look to add to their list of accomplishments as they make their bids to be the first American man or woman to win the famed race from Hopkington to Boston since 1985 when Lisa Larsen Weidenbach took the women's title. Greg Meyer was the last American man to win in 1983.
Following in the footsteps of legends such as Bill Rodgers and Joan Benoit Samuelson, Hall and Goucher have already created some of their own marathon history. With only five total marathons between them, both started their marathon careers by turning in the fastest debut marathon ever by an American man or woman.
From there Hall ran an Olympic Trials Marathon record in only his second attempt and then went on to run the second fastest time ever (2:06:17) for an American at last year's Flora London Marathon.
Though Boston will be only her second run at the distance, Goucher's marathon debut at last fall's ING New York City Marathon got the world's attention as she ran a remarkable 2:25:53 to become the first U.S. women to finish in the top-three at New York in 14 years.
Despite their obvious talent and ability at the marathon distance, Hall and Goucher will each face competitors that that have made Boston history of their own.
The men's field will feature four-time champion and course record holder Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot of Kenya while the women's field will feature defending champion Dire Tune of Ethiopia who won last year's race by a mere two-seconds, the closest finish in the history of the women's race.

Ena Johnson (Florida High) disqualified for raising arm at the finish line
Florida High's Ena Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles (14.98) and 300 hurdles (44.82) and also appeared to win the 100 meters. But her district-winning time was disqualified because she raised her arm at the finish line, and by rule her gesture was considered unsportsmanlike.
Johnson said she was simply tired from previous races and didn't think she had a chance to win the 100 meters. She said without thinking she raised her arm in celebration.
"They took it as taunting; that's not how I meant it," Johnson said.

GROUND BREAKING RESEARCH INTO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MARATHON
The Association of Road Racing Statisticians {ARRS} are proud to announce
that the ongoing research undertaken by their network statisticians into
the development of the Marathon has reached a significant milestone.
The Annual Marathon Rankings Project , led and co-ordinated by Andy
Milroy, has now documented the last 70 years. Annual lists - usually 200
performers deep - for the years 1940-2009 are posted on the ARRS website.

The Yearly Marathons Project, led and co-ordinated by Ken Young, has now
produced well developed draft lists for EVERY known marathon held during the
years 1940-2009. http://www.arrs.net/MaraList.htm
Together these two projects take marathon research far beyond what has
previously been attempted. The ARRS network statisticians from across the
globe have pooled their research and knowledge to create the most complete
picture of the event which has come to dominate long distance running in the
latter half of the twentieth century and into the twenty0first.
Ken Young, who manages the database and website for ARRS, said "The work
done thus far is a huge achievement, particularly bearing in mind that ARRS
has only been in existence for a little over five years."
"The intention is to extend the research back to 1900 and earlier, and
excellent progress is already been made towards achieving this."
In addition to the Marathons projects, the ARRS website also documents
hundreds of long held marathons, road , track and cross country races,

California renews its rivalry with Stanford in the 115th annual Big Meet on Saturday, April 18, at Stanford. The Invitational kicks off with the women's javelin at 11:50 a.m. The running events begin at 2 p.m. with the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. The Golden Bears hope to break its current losing streak to the Cardinal, as Stanford has swept the last two Big Meets. The Cal men are currently ranked No. 19 in the USTFCCCA rankings.
Last Time Out: Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite
Highlighting last weekend's Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational was the record-setting performance by junior Ryan Young in the javelin. Young set both the school and the meet records on Friday when he posted a record-setting mark of 250-10 (76.45m) to take the top spot overall. Young's performance earned him this week's Pac-10 Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors. Senior Martin Maric also earned a regional-qualifying mark in the javelin.
In Saturday's action at the Invitational, the Bears earned three more regional qualifiers as junior Kimyon Broom qualified in the 100-meter hurdles (13.52), sophomore Cyrena Giordano qualified in the women's pole vault (12-07.50, 3.85m) and freshman Sebastian Sam qualified in the 800 (1:49.85). Girodano became the third Cal women's pole vaulter to regionally qualify this season. Sam's time was a personal best and Cal's best 800 time this season.
Last Year's Big Meet
Highlighting the 2008 Big Meet for Cal was Katie Morgan and Thomas Mack. Morgan took top honors in the pole vault when she set the new school record and a new Big Meet record with her score of 13-5.75. Mack secured his own Big Meet record in the 110-meter hurdles. He tied his personal best in the event when he clocked a 13.74. The Stanford men defeated the Cal men, 96-67, while the Stanford women were victorious by the score of 87-76.
Brutus Hamilton Invitational - NYRR Distance Invitational
At the 2009 Brutus Hamilton Invitational from April 24-25, Edwards Stadium will go under the lights for the New York Road Runners Distance Invitational on April 24. Sixteen Olympians will be participating, including 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials 1500-meter champion Shannon Rowbury, two-time Olympic steeplechaser Anthony Famiglietti, and 2008 U.S. 10,000-meter Olympian Jorge Torres.
An international field of athletes will be attempting to achieve qualifying times at 5000 meters, 10,000 meters, and the 3000-meter steeplechase for the IAAF World Championships later this summer in Berlin. In partnering with Cal to host the NYRR Distance Carnival, NYRR will arrange pacemakers for the seeded heats of the men's and women's 5000- and 10,000-meter races.
NCAA Regional Qualifiers
Cal currently boasts 25 NCAA regional qualifiers, 14 on the women's team and 11 on the men's team.
