I enjoyed watching this meet. The athletes run according to the grade they are in. Coach Mike Davis (Monte Vista High School, Danville) puts on a very well organized meet. The athletes and their parents seem to enjoy themselves.
Oak Hill Park offers a quiet country setting with a spectacular Mt. Diablo backdrop, an idyllic location for family picnics, weddings, and other special occasions. This 43-acre park is the site of many special events that are sponsored by the Town of Danville, including a youth day camp and the Music in the Park summer concert series.

Senior Jackson Crose (Livermore), who won the junior race last year in 11:04.71, won the senior race in 10:43.41, the fastest boy's time of the afternoon. Senior Peter Schlachte (Amador Valley, Pleasanton), fourth in the junior race last year in 11:14.61, was second in the senior race in 10:45.17. Junior Tom Robey (Las Lomas, Walnut Creek), who won the junior race in 10:55.97, had the third best time.

Newton Running Athletes Dominate the Kauai Marathon & Half
KAUAI, Hawaii - The 6th Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon featured over 1,800 participants and over 130 youth runners in the 2nd Keiki Run sponsored by Wilcox Health. The Aloha State was well represented with 921 local registrants, of whom 651 were from Kauai, the most ever. Runners from 43 states and 16 countries enjoyed the magic of the Garden Isle. Additionally, there were 67 participants who ran the full or half marathon for the 6th year in a row.
The performance of the day went to Nicole Chyr (pictured, right), 36, of Englewood, Colo., who won the marathon in 3 hours flat, 24 seconds. She was followed by the top male finisher, Goya Hidemasa
of Japan, who clocked 3:01:30.
Tyler McCandless, 27, from Boulder, Colo., rewrote the half-marathon course record during his winning run with a time of 1:07:17. McCandless, also sponsored by Newton Running, shared the excitement of his victory.

Ritzenhein Leads U.S. Men at Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon
PHILADELPHIA - Three-time U.S. Olympian and 2009 IAAF World Half-Marathon bronze medalist Dathan Ritzenhein ("Ritz") will lead the U.S. men at the 2014 Rock 'n' Roll Running Festival Philadelphia on September 19-21, 2014. The event, now in its 37th year and renowned throughout the world, is known for its record performances as the scene of five world records, five U.S. marks and numerous age-group records.
Ritz joins a weekend line up of world-class athletes in Philadelphia this year. The men's half-marathon field includes Kenyans
Geoffrey Mutai,
Cyprian Kotut and
Bedan Karoki, who have all run under an hour for the distance. The women's race will feature the two fastest Americans at the half-marathon (13.1 miles) distance in history Deena Kastor and Kara Goucher. Headlining Saturday's first ever Rock 'n' Roll 5K is U.S.
Olympian Bernard Lagat, one of the world's all-time great distance runners.
"Philadelphia is one of the most famous half-marathons in the U.S. and we have a world-class field to match a world-class event," said Matthew Turnbull, Elite Athlete Coordinator for the event. "While it's a shame we've lost our defending champion Stanley Biwott to injury, Geoffrey is training well in defense of his New York Marathon title and he knows it's going to be a fast race. Runners Celebrate Labor Day at the Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon
WILLIAMETTE VALLEY, Ore. - Runners from near and far participated in the fifth running of the Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon presented by Newton Running and produced by Destination Races on Sunday, Aug. 31.
Two Oregon runners took home top honors as
Dan Kremske of Eugene topped the men's field and broke the course record in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 28 seconds, and Eva
Vail of Portland won the women's race in 1:19:54.
The fifth edition Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon started at Stoller Family Estate in Dayton, Oregon at 7am, with a course weaving 13.1 miles past vineyards, farms, and wineries before finishing at Ken Wright Cellars in Carlton, Oregon. The sold-out field of runners celebrated their achievements at the popular post-race Wine + Music Festival, where runners sampled local food and wine from over twenty wineries.

Corner Store Country Run Debuts in Little Rock
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Little Rock Marathon race officials announced it will partner with the Corner Store and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arkansas to host the inaugural Corner Store Country Run
to be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. in front of War Memorial Stadium and is part of an eight-city race series. The race benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arkansas and Little Rock Parks & Recreation.
"At Corner Store, we believe in giving back to the communities we serve," said Kim Bowers, CEO of CST Brands, the parent company of Corner Store. Eggleston, Marita win 2014 Rock 'n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - August 31, 2014 - Saturday's cool ocean breezes gave way to a steamy Sunday, morning in Virginia Beach at the 14th edition Rock 'n' Roll Running Festival on Labor Day Weekend. While American Jeffrey Eggleston outlasted his competition, he couldn't outlast the conditions narrowly missing his sub-65 minute goal to break the tape with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes and 67 seconds.
"It went pretty well, I'm happy to get the win," said Eggleston. "I've been trying to build on my success going back to Boston finishing 8th and then running 2:10 in July, I focused my training and regrouped as I build up for the fall. Today was a really good step forward. I wanted to go out and win, and look forward to running faster."
Eggleston, who recently ran a marathon personal best of 2:10:52 at the Gold Coast Marathon, tucked in with a lead pack of four athletes running an opening mile of 4:49. The threesome of North Carolina-based Kenyans Simion Chirchir, Betram Keter and Abraham Chelanga; pushed the sub-5 minute pace through five miles with a split of 24:45, when Eggleston began contemplating what would be a decisive move at a water station near mile six.

NEW ORLEANS - Cross country season is back, and with it, too, is the weekly National Athlete of the Week award presented by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday.
Who stood out this opening weekend? Damian Roszko of Mississippi State and Raquel Hefflin of UC-Riverside took the honors for Division I men and women, respectively, while Dillon Farrell of Moravian and Brianna Hickey of Chicago earned the men's and women's awards, respectively, for Division III.

National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to six collegiate cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions).
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
Beginning next week, all three NCAA Divisions will be recognized. The NCAA Division II cross country season doesn't begin until later this week.
Damian Roszko, Mississippi State - Division I Men
Senior | Bialystok, Poland
There's nothing quite like taking down an in-state rival to kick off your senior cross country campaign, and that's exactly how Damian Roszko of Mississippi State started his final season under the lights at the Memphis Twilight Invitational. Just nine days after arriving in America from a summer home in Poland, he held off runner-up Ole Miss frosh Mark Robertson by five seconds to win the individual four-mile race in 20:02.56.
With Roszko – a 3:39 1500-meter runner who plans to take on the 5000 meters this year in track – leading the way, Mississippi State tied rival Ole Miss atop the team standings at 49 points each, with Ole Miss ultimately taking the title on a tiebreaker.
The win was his first in a Mississippi State uniform since arriving in Starkville, Mississippi, a year ago. He chatted with Flotrack about his race, his running history and his goals this year following his big win. The Bulldogs are in action again September 13 at the Vanderbilt Classic.
Raquel Hefflin, UC-Riverside - Division I Women

In her first race in nearly a year, Raquel Hefflin of UC-Riverside earned the season-opening USTFCCCA Division I National Athlete of the Week award. She did so by winning the Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic in a 4k course record time of 14:06. Hefflin finished 23 seconds clear of a field that featured three regionally ranked teams: Mountain No. 7 Nevada and No. 10 Utah, and West No. 8 UCLA. Keeping with a growing and welcome national trend, the race was held under the lights on Friday evening.
Hefflin’s last race before redshirting the 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons was the 2013 West Region cross country championship, where she finished 36th. Her strongest mark on the track is a 2:08 800m, but her stellar season opener may be a harbinger of success at a distance nearly eight times 800 meters on the trails this fall. Dillon Farrell, Moravian - Division III Men

No stranger to success at the Lehigh Invitational – he was third there to open his 2013 junior campaign – Dillon Farrell of Moravian took it up another notch to start his senior season in 2014 as he claimed the individual win in a kick to the finish. The two-time Landmark Conference cross country champion edged out Division I Lehigh senior Nick Ward at the line by less than a second in 18:26.61 over the 6K course, crossing the finish ahead of a string of Lehigh competitors.
His performance was nearly 40 seconds quicker than his third-place showing in Bethlehem a year ago. His Moravian squad finished runner-up among six teams to team winner Lehigh.
Brianna Hickey, Chicago - Division III Women

For her efforts in winning the Elmhurst College Early Bird meet, Brianna Hickey of the University of Chicago is the season’s first USTFCCCA women’s Division III national cross country athlete of the week. Hickey outkicked Aurora’s Emily Paull to win a battle of two track All-Americans (Hickey in the mile, Paull in the steeplechase) by a second. Hickey and Paull finished 24 seconds clear of the rest of the field in Friday evening’s 4k, with Hickey coming out on top in 14:58.
It was the second time in the junior’s career that she finished as the No.1 runner for the Maroons.
Hickey talked with Flotrack in May about her rise from a 5:12 high school miler to a 4:32 collegiate 1500 runner. Last fall, she finished 10th in the UAA, 16th in the Midwest, and 60th in the nation for a Chicago team that took its first-ever ascent of the podium steps with a fourth place NCAA finish.
The preseason poll has Hickey and her teammates tipped to repeat that fourth place; next up is a race at NAIA Olivet Nazarene next Friday evening.

Preseason Division II Regional Team Rankings Announced

NEW ORLEANS – Could 2014 be a year for a "changing of the guard" at the regional level in Division II cross country? Depends whether you’re looking at the men’s or women’s Regional Team Rankings released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Three of the eight regions in the men’s rankings were topped by teams that finished third or lower in their respective regions a year ago, while just one region on the women’s side – the West Region – was absent a champion from its No. 1 spot.
American International‘s men finished fourth in the East Region last year but are projected as the early-season favorites behind last year’s fourth-place national finisher Michael Biwott, while the Shippensburg and Saint Leo men were tabbed preseason Nos. 1 in the Atlantic and South regions, respectively, following third-place finishes a year ago.

In those three men’s regions, the reigning regional team champs were ranked no lower than third – the minimum threshold for teams that qualify to the NCAA Division II Championships from each region – but the Alaska Anchorage women find themselves in a much more precarious situation.
The Seawolves are without their top four runners from their 2013 squad, and are consequently ranked No. 7 in the West, which is headed by last year’s regional runner-up Chico State. Going in the opposite direction was Cal Baptist, which moved up eight spots from its ninth-place 2013 showing to No. 2 in the preseason.
Such changes at the top were lacking in the other regions, particularly in the South Central and Midwest regions, homes to the reigning men’s and women’s national champions, respectively.
The Adams State men, winners of five of the past six national cross country team crowns, will begin 2014 at No. 1 in its region, while the Grand Valley State women, themselves champions in three of the past four years, open up their campaign atop the Midwest.
Adams State‘s women and Grand Valley State‘s men — both national runners-up a year ago — also claimed the No. 1 spots in those regions.
Rounding out the top-ranked men’s teams by region were Augustana (S.D.) (Central Region), Mount Olive (Southeast Region) and Chico State (West Region).
By women’s region, Edinboro (Atlantic Region), Minnesota Duluth (Central Region), Stonehill (East Region), Tampa (South Region) and Wingate (Southeast Region) all came in at No. 1 for their respection segments of the nation as reigning regional champions.
The preseason National Coaches Polls will be released Wednesday.
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Zagreb (pronounced [zǎːɡreb];[5] names in other languages) is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia. Huddle, Mecheso Race to USA 20 km Championship Titles

INDIANAPOLIS – Molly Huddle won her second consecutive USA Running Circuit title Monday morning at the USA 20 km Championships in New Haven, Connecticut, hosted by the New Haven Road Race. The Olympian and U.S. 5,000m record holder set the pace early and never looked back, while Girma Mecheso used a furious finishing kick to upset the men’s field and win his first U.S. title.
The USA 20 km Championships are the ninth stop on the USA Running Circuit, which concludes this fall with the .US National Road Racing Championships. The top ten finishers at each race on the circuit qualify to compete in the 2014 .US National 12k Race which takes place Sunday, November 16 in Alexandria, Virginia.
From the gun, Huddle (Providence, Rhode Island) pushed the field, hitting the first 5k split in 16:41, trailed only by Lindsey Scherf (Fayetteville, North Carolina) and Providence teammate Amy Hastings. The chase pack laid off the early pace, allowing Huddle to make enough of a break that by mile four Huddle and Hastings were 50 meters up on the field and extending their lead with every step.
Huddle and Hastings would run stride for stride until mile 7, when Huddle pushed the pace, hitting the next mile in 5:00 to put a 20 meter gap between herself and Hastings. While Hastings maintained her pace, Huddle stretched the lead to nearly 50 meters by mile 10 and never looked back. Into the final stretch, Huddle soaked in the ardent crowd of supporters, crossing the finish line victoriously in 1:08:34, twenty seconds up on runner-up Hastings.
While Huddle and Hastings dominated from start to finish, fellow Olympian Blake Russell (Pacific Grove, California) ran a tactical race and put space between herself and the chase pack over the back half of the race, pulling away over the final miles to place a somewhat surprising third in 1:10:38. Russell edged out USARC veteran Brianne Nelson (Fort Collins, Colorado), who also dipped under the 71-minute barrier with her 1:10:54 finish.
Huddle’s win gives her another 15 points in the USARC standings, placing her fourth overall with 30 points. While Sara Hall (46 points) of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Mattie Suver (37) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, remain 1-2, Kellyn Johnson Taylor (Flagstaff, Arizona) ran to a fifth place finish in New Haven, finishing in 1:11:46 to earn a big six points and now sits a single point behind Suver in third.
Rounding out the top ten, veteran road racer Clara Santucci (Dillner, Pennsylvania) finished sixth, leading a relatively tight pack of talent in 1:12:34, while fellow top ten U.S. marathoner Becky Wade (Dallas, Texas) placed seventh in 1:12:42, just ahead of Wendy Thomas in eighth with a mark of 1:12:52. Scherf slid back to ninth overall in 1:13:02, while Iowa resident Samantha Bluske (Ames, Iowa) placed tenth in 1:14:45.
On the men’s side, a comfortable early pace kept over a dozen runner in the lead pack through the first 5k split, as Matt Llano (Flagstaff, Arizona) pushed the group through in 15:15. By mile five, Llano upped the pace, running mile four and mile five in 4:52 and 4:50, whittling down the lead pack to eight.
The group of eight remained in tact for the next few miles, as Llano, Girma Mecheso (Lilburn, Georgia), Luke Puskedra (Beaverton, Oregon) and USARC standings leader Christo Landry (Ann Arbor, Michigan) traded leads. Just after the 9 mile mark, Mecheso started to push the pace, as Llano and Ahmed Osman (Flagstaff, Arizona) dropped off the back.
As the pace continued to quicken, Sean Quigley (Boulder, Colorado), who had been sitting at the back of the pack, started to drop off, leaving Mecheso, Puskedra, Scott Bauhs (Mammoth Lakes, California), Diego Estrada (Flagstaff, Arizona) and Landry to duke it out over the final 5k. Heading into the mile 11 split, Mecheso’s torrid pace dropped Estrada and Bauhs, leaving Landry and Puskedra as his only followers.
Into the final mile of the race, Landry made a move to take over the lead, hoping to break Mecheso and Puskedra, a move he’d used throughout the USARC season, the main reason he leads the circuit in commanding fashion. While Puskedra started to fade, Mecheso hung stride for stride and in the final 200m overtook Landry and sprinted away to victory, 1:01:26-1:01:27. Landry’s runner-up performance adds 12 more points to his USARC lead, giving him 76 points on the season.
Behind Mecheso and Landry, Puskedra finished strong to place third in 1:01:32. Puskedra’s been fairly quiet on the racing front over the past few months and a return to action bodes well for further fall racing. Puskedra gained a solid 10 points in the USARC standings, moving into a tie for third place overall with Mecheso and Chris Derrick (Portland, Oregon) with 27 points a piece.
Estrada showed improvement on his season with a fourth place effort in 1:01:41. The 2012 Olympian continues to learn how to race on the roads, as he turns his focus for the USA 5 km Championships later this month. Bauhs rounded out the top five, hanging tough over the final miles to finish in 1:01:56.
USA 7 Mile Champion Quigley placed sixth overall in 1:02:05, as his effort pushed him into second place in the USARC standings with 29 points. Llano, who’s preparing to debut in the marathon, finished seventh in 1:02:17, pulling ahead in the final miles from Osman, who finished eighth in 1:02:48. New pro Jared Ward (Kaysville, Utah) finished ninth overall and experienced veteran Fernando Cabada crossed tenth.
The USA Running Circuit moves into the final stages of this year’s series, as the USA 5 km Championships take place September 21 in Providence, Rhode Island.
About the USARC
The USARC is a USA Track & Field road series featuring USA championships from one mile through the marathon and consistently attracts the best American distance runners with more than $500,000 to be awarded in total prize money. A total of $43,000 in prize money was awarded at the USA 20 km Championships.
The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with those earning the most points receiving prize money at the end of the series.
The mission of the USARC is to showcase, support and promote U.S. runners. Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $7 million to U.S. distance runners.

Eggleston, Marita win 2014 Rock 'n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - August 31, 2014 - Saturday's cool ocean breezes gave way to a steamy Sunday, morning in Virginia Beach at the 14th edition Rock 'n' Roll Running Festival on Labor Day Weekend. While American Jeffrey Eggleston outlasted his competition, he couldn't outlast the conditions narrowly missing his sub-65 minute goal to break the tape with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes and 27 seconds.
"It went pretty well, I'm happy to get the win," said Eggleston. "I've been trying to build on my success going back to Boston finishing 8th and then running 2:10 in July, I focused my training and regrouped as I build up for the fall. Today was a really good step forward. I wanted to go out and win, and look forward to running faster."
Eggleston, who recently ran a marathon personal best of 2:10:52 at the Gold Coast Marathon, tucked in with a lead pack of four athletes running an opening mile of 4:49. The threesome of North Carolina-based Kenyans Simion Chirchir,
Betram Keter and Abraham Chelanga; pushed the sub-5 minute pace through five miles with a split of 24:45, when Eggleston began contemplating what would be a decisive move at a water station near mile six.

Arciniaga Wins Disneyland Half Marathon
ANAHEIM, Calif. (August 31, 2014) - Nick Arciniaga, originally from Fountain Valley, Calif., won the Disneyland Half Marathon in record fashion Sunday, finishing in 1 hour, 7 minutes,:48 seconds. Arciniaga, 31, led the field of 16,056 registered runners virtually from wire to wire to win easily after placing 7th in the Boston Marathon earlier this year finishing as the second American in 2:11.47.
"I don't get very many hometown wins since I don't race around here very much but running at Disneyland is something that is pretty close to my heart," said Arciniaga, who currently resides in Flagstaff, Ariz. "My aunt works here. I came here pretty much a couple times a year growing up so Disneyland is a huge place for me."

Outward Bound Trail Run Debuts Sept. 13
BALTIMORE - Corrigan Sports Enterprises, Inc. announced it will host the company's first-ever trail run on Saturday, September 13. The inaugural Outward Bound Trail Challenge 5K in Leakin Park includes mixed terrain with technical dirt trail, a boardwalk trail through the wetlands, several bridge crossings over the Dead Run stream as well as some pavement.

2014 State of the Sport - Part IV: Largest Road Races
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - (August 27, 2014) - The tremendous growth in the popularity of competitive distance running for fitness and health over the last 13 years is further illustrated by the results of Running USA's latest
State of the Sport Report.
A comprehensive analysis of finisher totals at the nation's Largest Road Races, the report analyzes available finisher data for 2013. Fueled by the tremendous popularity of the half-marathon distance, the data shows that participation in the nation's largest road races grew 73 percent over 13 years, quantifying running's exponential growth as a recreational sport and fitness regimen.
"This year's Largest Road Race totals are no surprise to those who have followed the Second Running Boom since its early days," said Rich Harshbarger, Running USA CEO. "Each year, more Americans are inspired to take up running for health and wellness, and they have a wide selection of exciting race events to choose from."
The number of U.S. race finishers has increased nearly 300% since 1990, and female representation has grown from just 25% to an all-time high of 57% in 2013, according to Part III of the State of the Sport series.
