Beverly Kearney was the head coach for women's track and field and cross country at The University of Texas at Austin. She held this position from 1993 with the Texas Longhorns until her resignation on January 5, 2013 .[1][2] Under her leadership, Kearney guided the Lady Longhorns to six NCAA Championships: Indoor Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2006, and Outdoor Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2005. She was placed on paid administrative leave on November 11, 2012 to investigate issues within the program that were undisclosed at the time.[3] On January 5, 2013, she resigned after admitting to an improper coach-student lesbian relationship that occurred in 2002.[2]

[edit] Early lifeBorn into a challenging family situation, Kearney lost her mother at 17, experienced homelessness and worked multiple jobs at an early age to support herself.[4] She was a standout student-athlete and began her track and field career at Hillsborough Community College where she earned National Junior College All-America honors. Earning scholarships she then moved to Auburn University where she claimed two AIAW All-America honors and was selected the Auburn Athlete of the Year and team MVP as a senior. In 1980, Kearney qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200m before closing out her career at Auburn in 1981 and earning a bachelor's degree in social work.[1][5] She was graduated in 1982 with a master’s degree in physical education at Indiana State University, where she began her coaching career in track and field.

[edit] Auto accidentOn December 26, 2002, Kearney was a passenger in an SUV that flipped over several times, throwing her some 50 feet from the car. The accident left Kearney paralyzed from the waist down. Two friends died on the scene including Ilrey Oliver Sparks, a 40-year-old academic counselor at UT and former Jamaican Olympic track star, and Muriel Wallace the mother of the driver. Three passengers survived including Kearney, the driver Michelle Freeman former Jamaican track & field athlete and Olympic bronze medalist, and Ilrey’s two-year old daughter Imani Sparks. When paramedics found Kearney on the pavement, she was barely breathing. Her spinal cord was badly injured, a chunk of her back had been ripped out, her skull was fractured, and she was bruised all over.[7][8][9]

When doctors explained to her that she'd never walk again she refused to accept it as fact and began her own personal race applying the same lessons she used when motivating her athletes to her own situation; push past limits and see beyond "realistic expectations." After multiple major surgeries, months of substantial rehabilitation and physical therapy, and excruciating pain she achieved her goal. First standing on her own to a crowd of 20,000 cheering people in the Mike A. Myers Stadium during the 2003 Texas Relays, four months after the accident. Within a year of the accident, she had abandoned her wheelchair and one year later, she traded her walker for two canes. After a couple of years, she only needed one cane to keep her balance.[10][11]

[edit] PhilanthropyIn 2006, Kearney founded the Pursuit of Dreams (POD) Foundation a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to reconnecting and assisting individuals with their life’s purpose, passions, and dreams. POD uses proven sports-based “coaching” methods and principals in a broader setting to strengthen individuals and communities. Each spring during the Texas Relays weekend the organization hosts a symposium and networking conference for teaching, inspiring and mentoring student-athletes and the entire community.[12][5] The purpose of the event is to bring together a distinguished group of minorities with stellar credentials from the entertainment, sports and music industries coupled with highly profiled individuals from academia, political and Corporate America to provide minority students with insight on making a successful transition into the corporate world.

Princeton Men's Track Hosts Navy in a Dual Meet this Sunday

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/1/13) - The Princeton men's track team hosts a dual with Navy on Sunday, Jan. 6 at Jadwin Gym.

This will be the 42nd dual meet between Princeton and Navy in the last 55 years, with Princeton holding the 21-20 edge in the series. The Tigers have won the last nine duals, with Navy's last win coming during the 1999-00 season.

Last year Princeton won 107-71, capturing 13 of 17 events.

Tom Hopkins was a double winner, with victories in the 400 and long jump. He ran 48.58 in the 400 and reached 6.95 meters (22-9.75) in the long jump. Senior Ivan Charbonneau won the 60-meter dash at 6.99 and the 60-meter hurdles title went to Rob Mohr at 8.37. Sebastian Steffen won the 200 in a time of 22.41.
Princeton went 1-2-3 in the 800 with Peter Callahan taking top honors at 1:51.91. Bradley Paternostro was second at 1:52.96 and Russell Dinkins is third at 1:53.44. The Tigers did it again the mile with two runners posting personal bests. Joe Stilin crossed the line at 4:07.37 for first place and a PR, Chris Bendtsen was second with a PR of 4:09.58 and Alejandro Arroyo Yamin was third at 4:10.24. Michael Palmisano won the 1k in 2:26.92 and Tyler Udland ran a PR winning the 3k at 8:27.10. Princeton also won the distance medley relay by 18 seconds. In the field events, Dave Slovenski and Garner McCloud won the pole vault and triple jump, respectively.

Navy Men's Track and Field at Princeton Sunday

Navy and Princeton to compete in annual indoor dual meet.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field program will resume its 2012-13 indoor season on Sunday at Princeton. Navy and Princeton will meet in their annual dual meet at 11:00 AM at Princeton's Jadwin Gymnasium. Live results will be available.

The weight throw will begin at 11:00 AM and the first running event will be the 5,000m run at 1:00 PM. Three individuals can be entered per team for each event and scoring will be 5-3-2-1 (Relays: 5-3).

Princeton defeated Navy, 107-71, at Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis last year to take a 21-20 lead in the all-time series. Sunday's dual will be the 42nd meeting in the past 55 years between the two schools.

Senior Joshua Shaw won the 500m dash at the 2012 Navy-Princeton dual with a time of 1:05.14. Senior Christopher Galvin took first place in the 5,000m run at 14:36.08.

Sunday's dual will be the second competition for Navy this season. The Mids hosted the non-team scored Navy Invitational on December 1, winning two events and posting five IC4A Championship qualifying performances.

Freshman Jaie Maness won the pole vault in his collegiate debut, clearing 16-2¾ (4.95m) to lead a Navy group that placed 1-6 in the pole vault. Maness was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for his efforts.

Navy also won the 4x400m relay at the Navy Invitational at 3:17.58. Junior Jeremy Cadiente, Shaw, freshman Austin Batiste Long Beach, Calif./Valley Christian and senior Kolton Kempel teamed up for the victory. Junior Zack Duncavage posted a personal record in the weight throw of 61-0¾ (18.61m) to place second.

Navy will next host American, Mount St. Mary's and VCU in a four-team meet on January 12 at the Wesley Brown Field House.

Lashinda Demus (born March 10, 1983 in Inglewood, California) is an American hurdler who specializes in the 400 meter hurdles.

Her personal best time over 400m hurdles is 52.47 seconds in Daegu, South Korea on September 1, 2011, which is currently the women's 3rd fastest time ever.[1] Demus is the American record holder in 400m hurdles.[2]

She is an alumna of Long Beach Wilson High School where she ran and still holds the national high school record for the 300 hurdles,[3] the only girl to break the 40 second barrier. She ran on the 4x400 relay team that set the national record in 1998, ran the second fastest time in history in 1999, and then broke its own national record in 2001[4] (since surpassed by cross town rival Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 2004).[3] She also competed in the 100 meter hurdles, winning the CIF California State Meet in 2001, on the 4x100 relay team, champions in 2001,[5] as well as many of the sprint medley teams. In 1999 and again in 2001 she was named the named the national Girl's "High School Athlete of the Year" by Track and Field News.[6]

After High School, Lashinda attended the University of South Carolina to work under Curtis Frye. Her top times in college were as follows: 55m H: 7.80; 60m H: 8.32; 100m H: 13.35; 400m H: 54.70; 400m: 51.38; 800m: 2:13.77.[7] While at South Carolina, Demus won the world Junior Championship in 2002, the NCAA Indoor Championship at 400 metres in 2004, the first of three National Championships[8] and a silver medal in the 2005 World Championships. Demus also was a member of the school's first NCAA team national championship when the women's track and field team won the 2002 NCAA outdoor national championship.

Demus qualified for the American team at the 2004 Olympics. In the semi-final, she ran exactly the same time as her teammate Sheena Johnson and .7 seconds faster than Brenda Taylor who qualified in the first semi, but Demus had the misfortune to run in the much faster second semi. Her fifth place did not advance her to the final.

Leaving behind the memory of failure to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics, she won the 2009 US Championships in the 400 m hurdles, with a world-leading 53.78 seconds, gaining herself a place at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics.[9] She improved upon this with a time of 52.63 seconds at the Herculis meeting in July. This was a meeting record and was then the fourth fastest time ever for the event.[10] With that time she was the favorite to win the World Championships but faltered over the last two hurdles as she was passed by Olympic Gold Medalist Melanie Walker of Jamaica who was en route to the #2 time in history, leaving Demus to take home a second silver medal. However, Demus got her revenge at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, when she won the gold medal in 52.47, a new American Record and the third fastest time in history. She beat reigning Olympic Champion and defending World Champion Melaine Walker, who finished second. Heavy favorite Kaliese Spencer who had set the fastest time in 2011, could only finish fourth behind Demus, Walker and 2010 European Champion and former Olympic 400m bronze medalist Natalya Antyukh.[11]

SEC Names 2013 Eastern Division Women's Legends

Updated 1/3/2013 24 0 24 0BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Jan. 3, 2013) – The Southeastern Conference 2013 Class of Women’s Legends showcases former student-athletes from all 14 SEC member institutions.

The conference is announcing the legends from its Eastern Division schools today while the Western Division schools will be announced on January 10. Each legend will then be celebrated individually on each Sunday and Thursday between January 13 and February 28.

The class will be honored at the 2013 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament, March 6-10 in Duluth, Ga. Each legend will be honored during half-time of their teams first game of the tournament, all 14 individuals will also be honored as a group during the half-time of the first semifinal games on March 9. The Greats will then participate in an autograph session on the concourse between the two games. Complimentary posters of the Greats will be available at the session.

Running USA Announces Youth Awards 2012 Criteria



COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (January 2, 2013) - Running USA, the national industry non-profit organization, has announced the criteria for its Youth Awards 2012. In addition, for the first time, the three category winners will receive $5000 each, and past Youth Award winners are eligible to enter. At Running USA 2013: The 10th Industry Conference, the three winners will be recognized and feted at the Youth Awards Luncheon presented by Ashworth Awards on Tuesday, February 26. The annual must-attend conference will be held February 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency Savannah, Georgia.



"Across the country there are many outstanding, impactful youth running programs with dedicated coordinators and volunteers, and we not only want to acknowledge the best ones, but also provide them financial support for their important efforts to keep our kids healthy and fit," said Susan Weeks, Running USA CEO.

Thompson, DiCrescenzo Ring in New Year with Emerald Nuts Wins


NEW YORK CITY - Thousands of runners celebrated the first minutes of 2013 with a chilly run through Central Park in the 2012 Emerald Nuts Midnight Run, produced by the New York Road Runners. But it was Delillah DiCrescenzo and Christian Thompson of the NJ-NY Track Club who started the year off right with victories in the midnight race.


An NYRR annual event since 1979, the four-mile event draws thousands of health-minded people of all ages, fitness levels, and nationalities. The run began at the stroke of midnight with the traditional countdown taking place less than a mile north of the festivities of Times Square, which draw upwards of a million revelers. But the thousands who chose a running start to the new year managed to turn Central Park into their own party. As runners crossed the starting line on the 72nd Street Transverse, a 20-minute fireworks display began in the skies above.



"It was awesome," DiCrescenzo (above, courtesy NYRR), 29, of Manhattan, told Race Results Weekly shortly after she broke the tape in 21 minutes, 7 seconds, one of the fastest times in event history. "It's a really fun atmosphere. I was just having a blast out there. It was a ton of fun."

ING Miami Marathon Records $52 Million Economic Impact


MIAMI - The 10th anniversary ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon®, South Florida's largest marathon, generated $52.2 million in total economic impact for the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County in 2012 according to a study just released by the Sport Industry Research Center (SIRC). The 3-day weekend event, held during the last weekend in January, features races including a 5K, half marathon, and marathon; the event also boasts one of the largest health and fitness expos in the region drawing over 40,000 visitors and participants to the Miami Beach Convention Center for the two days leading up to the race.


The economic impact generated by the ING Miami Marathon® represented a 26.3% increase from 2011's event. The increase can be attributed to the increase in individual spending by international visitors and an increase in the number of non-local participants.

Desiree Davila Out of 2013 Boston Marathon Due to Injury

BOSTON - Desiree Davila, a member of the 2013 John Hancock Elite Boston Marathon Team has withdrawn from the upcoming Monday, April 15 race due to a slow-healing femoral stress fracture of the right leg. The injury occurred shortly before the 2012 London Olympic Marathon in August 2012. Although her recovery is taking longer than expected, Davila (right, PhotoRun) said she is making progress and looks forward to competing in future Boston Marathons.

"Keeping my long term goals in mind, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the running of the 2013 Boston Marathon," said Davila.

Davila placed second at the 2011 Boston Marathon and set a new American course record of 2:22:38

Team USA heads to Great Edinburgh International Cross Country
Following their individual wins in December at the USA Track & Field National Club Cross Country Championships, Jacob Riley and Mattie Suver headline the members of Team USA while Dennis Barker and Dena Evans will lead the teams as coaches for the 2013 Great Edinburgh International Cross Country. Competition is scheduled for Saturday in Scotland.

Team USA will send four squads to Scotland for senior and junior races for both men and women.

With the majority of the selections for the senior teams being chosen at the National Club Cross Country Championships, Riley joins Craig Forys, Elliot Krause, Matthew Forys, Jonathan Peterson and Sean Quigley in Scotland, who all placed in the top six at the national club championships.

On the women’s squad, Suver is joined by Brianne Nelson, Meghan Peyton, Ladia Albertson-Junkans, Addie Bracy and Sarah Boyle, who all grabbed top ten finishes at the national club championships.

Steven Solomon (born 16 May 1993) is an Australian sprinter. He is a two-time defending Australian 400 metres champion. Solomon attended Cranbrook School, Sydney.

After breaking the 30-year old national junior record in the 400 metres in 2011, Solomon was part of the Australian squad in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.[1]

Solomon, who is Jewish, plans to follow his father Michael Solomon into medicine after accepting an athletic scholarship at Stanford University after the 2012 Summer Olympics.[2]
