Running on Empty: An American Sports Tradition Fades
THE announcement this week that Bill Rodgers would shutter his last running store, in Boston's Faneuil Hall, was a sad farewell to a bygone era of great American runners. Rodgers was the four-time Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon winner and, along with Frank Shorter and Alberto Salazar, ruled the roads in the 1970s and early '80s. (In large part because of their achievements, it is estimated that the New York City Marathon brings $340 million to the city, making its cancellation an economic - as well as an athletic - bust.) Yet the men, like the store, are creaky with age, and no fountain of youth renews them.

Milton Gray Campbell (born December 9, 1933, at Plainfield, New Jersey; died November 2, 2012 in Gainesville, Georgia[1]) was an American decathlete of the 1950s. In 1956, he became the first African American to win the gold medal in the decathlon of the Summer Olympic Games.[citation needed]
At Plainfield High School he competed in track and swimming.[2] He then enrolled at the Indiana University (Bloomington), where he played football and track.[3] While a student at Plainfield High School, Campbell won a place on the 1952 Olympic team in the decathlon. Although just 18 years old, Campbell finished second to Bob Mathias in the decathlon.[citation needed]
Campbell set New Jersey state records in the high and low hurdles and in the high jump, and scored 140 points as fullback in football. He was inducted into the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1997.[3]
In 1956 at Melbourne, Campbell won the gold medal. He narrowly missed a world record. Many observers believe he would have set the record if not for a subpar performance in the pole vault.[citation needed]
Campbell was also an excellent swimmer as a youth. An all around athlete, Campbell briefly played in the National Football League for the Cleveland Browns[3] and in 1959 for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League.[citation needed]
Among Campbell's 3 children, his son Grant is a winner of the World Karate Championships.[citation needed]
In 2008, a degree of Doctor of Public Service, honoris causa, was conferred upon him by Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey.[citation needed]
In 2012, Campbell was voted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.[4][citation needed]

1956 NCAA Men's Track and Field Championships
I attended this meet with my father, who was a track fan. I was 15 years old. We lived in San Francisco. I had just completed the first semester of my sophomore year at Lincoln High School, where I ran the 660 yards in the "B" classification. Classification was based on age, weight, and height. Unfortunately, I just missed being classified as a "C". The 660 yards started in the tunnel at Kezar Stadium, the home of the S.F. 49ers.

The 1956 NCAA Track and Field Championships were held in Berkeley, California in June 1956. UCLA won the team title, ending a seven-year streak by the University of Southern California. Nine NCAA meet records and one American record were broken at the event.[1]
Bobby Morrow of Abilene Christian led all athletes with 20 points in the meet. Morrow won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.[1] Morrow went on to win three gold medals in the 1956 Summer Olympics.
Rafer Johnson led the scoring for team champion UCLA. Johnson scored 16 of UCLA's 55-7/10 points with second-place finishes in the broad jump and high hurdles.[1] Johnson went on to win the gold medal in the decathlon at the 1960 Summer Olympics.
The one American record that was broken at the meet was in the 800-meter run. Arnie Sowell of the University of Pittsburgh set the new American mark with a time of 1:46.7.[1]

The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field sport, similar to the long jump, but involving a "hop, bound and jump": the competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. The triple jump has its origins in the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympics event since the Games' inception in 1896.

The 1956 NCAA Track and Field Championships were held in Berkeley, California in June 1956. UCLA won the team title, ending a seven-year streak by the University of Southern California. Nine NCAA meet records and one American record were broken at the event.[1]
Bobby Morrow of Abilene Christian led all athletes with 20 points in the meet. Morrow won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.[1] Morrow went on to win three gold medals in the 1956 Summer Olympics.
Rafer Johnson led the scoring for team champion UCLA. Johnson scored 16 of UCLA's 55-7/10 points with second-place finishes in the broad jump and high hurdles.[1] Johnson went on to win the gold medal in the decathlon at the 1960 Summer Olympics.
The one American record that was broken at the meet was in the 800-meter run. Arnie Sowell of the University of Pittsburgh set the new American mark with a time of 1:46.7.[1]

Arthur DuffeyArthur Francis Duffey (June 14, 1879 - January 23, 1955) was an American track and field athlete who competed at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. He was an alumnus of the Class of 1899 of Worcester Academy and Georgetown University. He was originally from Boston, Massachusetts and after his athletic career was a sports writer and editor and settled in the Boston area.
Duffey competed in the 100 metres event in the 1900 Summer Olympics, placing fourth overall. He won his first-round heat with a time of 11.4 seconds, dropped to 11.0 seconds to win his semifinal, and took an early lead in the final before pulling a muscle in his leg. This injury forced him to withdraw from the race as the other three runners in the final took the medals.
In 1905, he confessed that he had been accepting sponsor money since 1898, and the AAU ordered all of his records expunged.
Later, Duffey became a columnist for the Boston Post.

Pat McDonald (Patrick Joseph "Babe" McDonald, born McDonnell; July 29, 1878 – May 16, 1954) was born in Doonbeg, County Clare, Ireland. He competed as an American track and field athlete in a variety of the throwing events. He was a member of the Irish American Athletic Club and of the New York City Police Department, working as a traffic cop in Times Square for many years. He was part of a group of Irish-American athletes known as the "Irish Whales."

Pat McDonald Memorial at White Strand, Doonbeg, County Clare, IrelandHe competed for the United States in the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm, Sweden in the shot put where he won the gold medal. He also took part in the shot put (both hands) competition where the distance thrown with each hand was added together. This was the only time this event was held in the Olympic program, and McDonald finished second behind teammate Ralph Rose who had finished second to him in the shot competition.
McDonald returned 8 years later after World War I to compete in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. Here he won the Gold medal in the 56 lb weight throw in the second and final time this competition was held in the Olympic program.
Pat McDonald died in 1954 at age 75 and was interred at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.

Pat McDonald (Patrick Joseph "Babe" McDonald, born McDonnell; July 29, 1878 – May 16, 1954) was born in Doonbeg, County Clare, Ireland. He competed as an American track and field athlete in a variety of the throwing events. He was a member of the Irish American Athletic Club and of the New York City Police Department, working as a traffic cop in Times Square for many years. He was part of a group of Irish-American athletes known as the "Irish Whales."

Pat McDonald Memorial at White Strand, Doonbeg, County Clare, IrelandHe competed for the United States in the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm, Sweden in the shot put where he won the gold medal. He also took part in the shot put (both hands) competition where the distance thrown with each hand was added together. This was the only time this event was held in the Olympic program, and McDonald finished second behind teammate Ralph Rose who had finished second to him in the shot competition.

Kim Batten (born 29 March 1969 in McRae, Georgia, U.S.) is a retired female American 400 meter hurdles champion. She was the 1995 world record holder in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Batten graduated from the Florida State University in 1991, the same year she won her first national championship - the U.S. National Championships, the first of six national championships (1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998).
Batten is 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 m) tall.
Batten's finest year came in 1995, when she won Gold in the World Athletics Championships breaking the World Record for the 400m Hurdles in a time of 52.61 seconds. Batten also came first in the Pan American Games and first in the national indoor championships.
In 1996 she won silver in the 1996 Olympic Games and in 1997 won bronze in the World Athletics Championships. She was also a member of the 2000 US Olympic track team.
In 1999 an injury to a nerve in her foot caused her to miss most of the season. Batten retired at the end of the 2001 season.
Batten currently resides at Atlanta, GA.

Barely recruited out of high school, the future Olympic champion never qualified for the Texas High School Championships. Austins prep coach called Rock Light of Southwest Texas to ask him to take a look. Light liked what he saw and Austin enrolled at Southwest Texas State. Austin faced a difficult time when tendonitis that had been building up since 1990 crashed his 1993 season. By then, his knee was shredded. Austin had surgery in July 1993 after being told he would never jump again otherwise. He bounced back to win the Olympic gold in 1996 after a daring pass and two misses at 7-9.25...he had to clear an Olympic Record 7-10 with his one remaining leap... sons Camron (born 1990) and Alex (born 1993)...shares custody of them with his ex-wife; says, When Im not training, Im spending as much time with them as I can...ranked #1 in U.S. 4 times in his career...is beginning work on his MBA...consults with coach Sue Humphrey...friends and family call him Snake.

Charles Austin (born December 19, 1967) is an American athlete who won the gold medal in the men's high jump at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He is the owner of So High Sports and Fitness a sports performance and personal training company. He opened his So High Sports and Fitness Studio in 2002 and his So High Sports and Fitness Performance Center in 2008. Both are located in San Marcos, Texas. Charles is also the author of the book, Head Games: Life's Greatest Challenge.
[edit] Career Charles Austin has achieved a level of success of which most people can only dream. An Olympic gold medalist, Austin is the American and Olympic high jump record holder, two-time World Champion, and a nine-time national track and field high jump champion. Raised in Van Vleck, Texas, Austin was the youngest of 10 children. He was a senior in high school without any way to pay for college, when some friends convinced him to try high jumping for the track team. He cleared six feet on his first try to make the team and finished the year with a personal best of 6' 11".
Austin's success landed him an athletic scholarship at Southwest Texas University (now Texas State University). After a difficult first few years, he climbed the ranks in the NCAA, shattering school records and his senior year, won the NCAA Outdoor Championship in 1990 and was the number one college high jumper in the country.
In 1991, Austin graduated with a degree in business administration. Within the year he was the American Record Holder (2.40m - 7'10 1/2") and gold medalist at the 1991 World Championship and was a contender to win in the Olympics. However, when he arrived at the 1992 Olympic trials there was speculation on whether or not he should compete, due to a knee injury. He pushed forward, making it on to the U.S. team, but his confidence was shaken and a poor performance cost him a medal. He finished in eighth place.
The trouble continued, forcing Austin to have major surgery and threatening to end his career. He was left to watch from home as his fellow athletes competed in the 1993 World Championship. But while his knee healed, Austin's passion continued to grow. In 1994, he began his journey back to the top of the world high jump ranks. Within a few years, he had regained his strength and was once again performing at a high level.
When he returned to the Olympics in 1996, he did so with a new determination and mental focus. His gold winning jump of 7' 10" was a new Olympic record and still stands today.

USATF announces 2012 Hall of Fame class
INDIANAPOLIS – USA Track & Field announced Thursday that all-time track and field greats Charles Austin, Kim Batten, Pat McDonald and Arthur Duffey along with Millrose Games legends Fred and Howard Schmertz make up the 2012 class of the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.
The group will be inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame on Saturday, December 1, at the Jesse Owens Hall of Fame Banquet as part of the 2012 USATF Annual Meeting in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Austin, the 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the high jump and American record holder, and Batten, the 1996 Olympic 400-meter hurdles silver medalist and former world record holder, will be inducted as modern athletes, which include those retired within the past 25 years.
McDonald, the 1912 Olympic gold medalist in the shot put and 1920 gold medalist in the weight throw, and Duffey, a former world record holder in the 100-yard dash, will be inducted as veteran athletes, which include those retired more than 25 years.
The father-son duo of Fred and Howard Schmertz, who were both instrumental in the growth of the Millrose Games, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as contributors.
About the National Track & Field Hall of Fame
The finalists from each category are selected by a screening panel from a list of nominations. Panelists examine the nominees and evaluate their merits. Elections for modern and veteran athletes are held each year. Elections for coaches are held in odd-numbered years with contributors elected in even-numbered years. Class of 2012
Charles Austin
Born: December 18, 1967
Charles Austin’s career began as a high school athlete who fell short of qualifying for the Texas high school state championships. It finished with an Olympic gold medal, world championship and American record. Austin became as dominant as a high jumper can be in the latter part of the 1990s by winning six consecutive USA Outdoor championships from 1995-2000. But his proudest moment came when he won the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, the last time a member of Team USA has done so. His career was also one of longevity. When he won his last USA Indoor championship in 2003, it was 12 years after his first world title and the year he set the American record (2.40m/7-10.5). Austin’s career also included World Indoor gold, a World Cup title, an Olympic record and a total of nine combined USA Indoor and Outdoor titles.
Kim Batten
Born: March 29, 1969
During her time at Florida State University, Kim Batten needed to make a choice of which event she would focus on as a professional. She chose the grueling 400-meter hurdles. It proved to be a wise choice as she set a world record while becoming the 1995 World Outdoor champion. Her time of 52.61 remains the fourth-fastest time ever run. A two-time Olympian and the 1996 Olympic silver medalist, Batten won six USA Outdoor titles between 1991 and 1998. She burst on the scene in 1991 when she upset Sandra Farmer-Patrick to win the USA Outdoor title while just 22 years old. Batten is also a member of the Florida State University Hall of Fame where she was a nine-time All-American and earned the 1996 ESPY award as Women’s Track and Field Performer of the Year.
Arthur Duffey
Born: June 14, 1879; Died: January 25, 1955
For half a decade at the end of the 1800s and early 1900s, Arthur Duffey was considered the fastest man in the world. In 1902 he became the first person to set the world record in the 100-yard dash at 9.6 seconds (9 3/5 second at the time). He was the favorite to win the 1900 Olympic Games in the 100 meters, but did not finish in the final due to a pulled muscle. His greatest accomplishment was winning four consecutive AAA titles in England from 1900 through 1903. He also won the IC4A 100-yard title each year from 1901 through 1903 while competing for Georgetown University. Duffey ran into controversy with AAU President James Sullivan over his amateur status and Duffey’s AAU records and IC4A titles were erased. The British AAA, notoriously more strict about amateurism than the AAU, chose not to delete Duffey’s name from their list of champions. Following his competitive career, Duffey spent much of the rest of his life as a sports writer with the Boston Post.
Pat McDonald
Born: July 29, 1878; Died: May 16, 1954
Pat McDonald is recognized as the oldest Olympic champion in history, winning the 56-pound weight throw at the 1920 Games at the age of 42. However, his career was far from over as he won the last of his incredible 16 AAU titles in the weight throw in 1933 at the age of 55. McDonald also won the 1912 Olympic gold medal in the shot put and a silver medal in the men’s two-handed shot put. The latter event, which featured recording the total distance a person threw the shot put with each arm, was only contested in 1912. Born in Ireland, McDonald moved to New York City where he competed for the Irish-American A.C. and the New York A.C. and worked for the New York Police Department, spending much of his time patrolling Times Square.
Fred and Howard Schmertz
Fred – Born: November 10, 1888; Died: March 25, 1976
Howard – Born: June 9, 1925
There has never been a running of the iconic Millrose Games, which first started in 1908 and will be held for the 106th time in 2013, that either Fred or Howard Schmertz has not been involved with on some level. Fred was one of the founding members of the meet before taking over as meet director in 1934, serving through 1974. At that point, his son, Howard, a New York City lawyer, took over the position until 2003, when he was appointed meet director emeritus. During their run, the Millrose Games have come to be the most enduring indoor international track meet in the world. Both Howard and Fred are also members of the Millrose Games Hall of Fame and Howard a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

NEW ORLEANS – The NCAA announced several future championship sites for all divisions on Thursday morning. Cross country championships sites were set for the 2013 Division III run and all track & field championships in all divisions are set for the 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons.

Hanover (Ind.) will host the 2013 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships, marking their third time as national-championship host. The school also hosted in 2003 and 2008.
In Division I, the indoor track & field national championships in 2014 will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., at the Albuquerque Convention Center and hosted by the University of New Mexico. It will mark the first time the meet will be held in The Duke City and, at 5,312 feet (1,619 meters), the first time the meet will be held at statistical “altitude” (over 1,000 meters, 3,280 feet). Albuquerque has served as hosts of the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships and the USATF Indoor Championships since 2010.
North Florida will serve as hosts of the 2014 DI East Preliminary Round for the outdoor season.
The Division II indoor meet in 2014 will be held in Salem, N.C., and hosted by Winston-Salem State. During the outdoor season, the national championships will stay in the Tar Heel State as Saint Augustine’s will host in Raleigh.
Division III will hold their indoor national championships in 2014 in Lincoln, Neb., at the University of Nebraska’s Devaney Center. Nebraska Wesleyan will serve as hosts of the indoor meet while Ohio Wesleyan will take over those duties for the outdoor championships in ’14.

Tyler Sickler is not only hoping for a return trip to the California Interscholastic Federation state cross country meet, he's hoping to have some company.

Air Force brawl: Unofficial Academy tradition results in melee, 27 injuries
Six cadets were taken to an off-campus hospital after the Oct. 25 ruckus and have been released, the academy said Wednesday. The others were treated at a cadet clinic.
