Augie Argabright Announces Retirement

Release: 11/03/2011

Augie Argabright coached the Spartans to more than 1,000 victories as the Spartans cross country coach.

After six decades of coaching local cross country runners locally, nationally and internationally, San Jose State University's Augie Argabright is retiring from coaching. Marie Tuite, the Spartans' deputy director of athletics, made the announcement.

Considered a pioneer specifically in women's cross country circles, Argabright spent the last 18 seasons as the Spartans' first women's cross country coach. He added the duties of men's cross country head coach in 1997 when the university reinstated the sport after a nine-year absence.

"Everyone connected with San Jose State athletics congratulates Augie on a distinguished coaching career. From his days coaching the San Jose Cindergals AAU championship teams to starting the San Jose State women's cross country program and re-establishing the men's program, Augie was a positive influence on the lives of countless young men and women. We wish he and his wife, Kathy, the best in their future plans," says Tuite.

HIS SAN JOSE STATE LEGACY

At San Jose State, his women's teams won the Cross Country only national invitational championships in 1999 and 2005. His overall win-loss record leading the two Spartan programs was 1,052-941-1. The Spartans earned 18 All-Western Athletic Conference honors and finished in the top-10 at the conference women's championship meet seven times.

His student-athletes earned more than 100 Academic All-WAC honors while he was head coach.

"I told many our athletes, if you're All-WAC academically, it's going to look just as good on your resume as if you're All-WAC athletically," Argabright says.

A NATIONAL FIGURE IN HIS SPORT

Before taking the San Jose State position, Argabright formed the San Jose Cindergals AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) team in 1967 and was its director and head coach for 15 years. The Cindergals won nine AAU national championships with Argabright in charge. Twice, he was appointed to coach the USA national cross country team. Five-time U.S. Olympian Francie Larrieu is his best-known protégée.

"We (he and his wife Kathy) will do some traveling. One of our goals is to visit all the major league ballparks. We'll be able to spend a lot of time with our four grand-daughters, because they are within a 15-minute walk from where we live," says Argabright.

"I appreciate all the runners who have run for us. They've all worked really hard, were very dedicated and many of them have gone on to successful careers in their field."

Argabright's final meet as San Jose State's cross country head coach will be at the NCAA West Regional Championships, Saturday, November 12, on the Stanford University course.

Keith Conning: Thank you Augie for all the things you have done for our sport over the years. We will miss you. Augie was a railroad train engineer. In 1992 I gave Augie and his wife a ride in my rental car from the New Orleans Airport to their room at Tulane University for the Olympic Trials.

Augie Argabright embarks on his 18th season as the San Jose State University cross country head coach. The women’s head coach since 1994, he added the duties as the men’s head coach in 1997 when the program was reinstated.

His student-athletes have earned 14 All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) honors, 115 Academic All-WAC accolades and two Cross Country Only national championships. In addition, two of his women’s teams were honored for academic excellence by the Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association.

During his five-decade professional career, he has coached 12 high school cross country All-Americans, 10 U.S. cross country champions and seven high school state track and field
champions.

A pioneer in women’s cross country circles, he formed the San Jose Cindergals Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team in 1967 and was its director and head coach until 1982. The Cindergals were recognized as one of the world’s top teams under his direction and won nine AAU national championships.

“Augie is one of those very rarest of coaches who combines science and knowledge, with passion for what he does to help young people better themselves,” said Brooks Johnson, former Stanford University and USA national team track and field coach.

Argabright coached five-time U.S. Olympian and 1992 Opening Ceremonies flag bearer Francie Larrieu and two-time U.S. Olympian Cyndy Poor. He was a three-time coach of the U.S. Track and Field team and a two-time coach of the U.S. National cross country team.

The 1971 San Jose State graduate established the cross country and track and field programs at West Valley College in 1977. West Valley won two state championships in cross country and two in track and field. He was named the 1980 California Community College Coach of the Year.

“This is a great place to run if you want to be successful in the classroom and on the course,” said Argabright. “With our main schedule in the fall and our lighter schedule in the spring, you can take more classes or harder classes in the spring. If you want to run in college, academics must come first. Then, this is the best place to come.”

Argabright and his wife, Kathy, reside in San Jose. They have two grown children, Jeff and Meg.

Keith Conning: I stayed in the University of Oregon dormitories during the 2008 Olympic Trials. I recommended it highly. The only drawback is that there is no toilet or sink in the room. You get three very good meals per day at no extra cost. The cost is $89 for a single and $59 for a double. You are billed immediately on your credit card. You will meet track fans from all over the United States. Many of the spectators are runners and coaches.

Gillettes Sweep to Victory at 48th Atlanta Marathon

Inaugural Atlanta Marathon Relay draws 300 teams; Atlanta Track Club's Adopt a Marathon Mile program raises money for local nonprofits

By Tracy Lott, ATC

ATLANTA - (October 30, 2011) - Nearly 1,200 marathon participants and 300 relay teams toed the line at the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay on Sunday morning. The event started and finished at Atlantic Station near Midtown Atlanta. 2011 marked the 48th running of the Atlanta Marathon, which was previously held in conjunction with the Atlanta Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day, as well as the inaugural running of the Atlanta Marathon Relay.

"From the sell-out of the inaugural Atlanta Marathon Relay, to the near perfect weather conditions and fantastic course support from our volunteers and the 18 Atlanta-based nonprofit organizations that were part of the Atlanta Track Club's Adopt a Marathon Mile program, we couldn't have asked for a better event," said Tracey Russell, Executive Director of the Atlanta Track Club.

In a first for the Atlanta Marathon, the husband and wife duo of Justin Gillette and Melissa Gillette, both 28 of Goshen, Ind. took home the titles in 2 hours, 33 minutes, 45 seconds and 3:01:40 respectively. Justin took the lead early in the race around mile three and was able to maintain his lead throughout, crossing the finish nearly seven and a half minutes ahead of runner-up Charles Slick of Atlanta. Melissa drew her motivation to tackle the hilly, Atlanta course from the crowd support along the way which contributed to her nearly six minute lead over second place finisher Patricia Coppel of Atlanta.

The Atlanta Track Club Men's Open Team made up of Cory Baumann, Mike Gerber, Andrew Mearns and Piotr Witczak took top honors in the men's relay division with a time of 2:23:28 at the Atlanta Marathon Relay, while team "birthday CAKE" made up of Anna Collins, Kay Crawford, Clara Easterlin and Elyse Ensor claimed first in the women's relay division with a time of 3:23:59.

Throughout the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay participants were treated to aid station and cheer zone support from 18 metro Atlanta based nonprofits that were selected to be part of the Atlanta Track Club's Adopt a Marathon Mile program.

The various organizations each adopted a mile of the course and provided a minimum of 30 volunteers to support an aid station and cheer zone within their mile. Organizations that met the minimum requirements during the event will receive a $3500 - $7500 donation from the Atlanta Track Club based on each organization's level of support.

Macias, Mallon Set Course Records at Wine Country Half Marathon

In sprint finish Macias edges Reyes at 4th edition; Mallon's third California series title earns Vertical Flight Award

From Matt Dockstader

HEALDSBURG, Calif. - (October 29, 2011) - It turned out to be a picture perfect, and fast, day at the fourth running of the Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon on Saturday morning. Defending champion and Mexican citizen Mario Macias from Alamosa, Colo. and Julia Mallon of Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa HS 1997, Stanford) both set course records and took home $1000 in cash, a 3 liter bottle of Coppola wine and a Ball Watch.

Mallon, 32, a previous winner of the Napa-to-Sonoma and Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathons, captured her third series title, thus earning the Vertical Flight Award for winning all three California races. The Stanford grad finished in a course record time of 1 hour, 17 minutes, 34 seconds, defeating women's runner-up Madeline Kramer of Berkeley (1:19:24).

For Macias, it was a battle from start-to-finish with 2009 race champion Sergio Reyes of Palmdale, Calif. The pair ran together for the entire 13.1 miles, often exchanging the lead but ultimately running side-by-side. In the final yards, Macias, 26, edged Reyes at the tape, with a course record time of 1:04:34 vs. 1:04:35 for Reyes. By nearly a minute, both were under Macias' course record time of 1:05:30 set in 2010.

"We both felt very good and could not seem get any distance between us," Macias recounted. "At mile eleven we knew it was going to come down to the final sprint and we both had some kick left so I did not even know who won until we saw the results. What an amazing race on a beautiful day!"

More than 1,800 runners from 40 different states completed the Halloween and wine harvest themed race that starts at Francis Ford Coppola Winery and finishes at the base of Lake Sonoma. Many runners came dressed in costume and enjoyed the various offerings on course, including the Sauvignon Blanc and peanut butter pretzels served at mile seven.

The post-race Wine and Music Festival featured top wines from the region and two bands on a perfectly warm, sunny day. The top three finishers in each age division won bottles of wine at the awards ceremony and prizes were also given to the two top teams and top three costumes. The monkey Curious George and her handler took top honors for best costume.

The Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon is produced by Destination Races of Sonoma, California. The Wine Country Half Marathon series consists of five races including Santa Barbara wine country, Northern Virginia, Napa-to-Sonoma, Oregon (Willamette Valley) and Healdsburg.

Spencer Castro (Sonora HS 2007, Stanford 2011; UC Merced) follows The Conning Tower

Spencer Castro is entering his first season as the inaugural cross country coach at UC Merced.

The 2011 Stanford University graduate developed his interest in coaching as a counselor at Stanford’s Nike Camp of Champions, while running for Stanford cross country and track and field teams. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology and Society.

In 2011, as a senior, Castro contributed to Stanford’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor track and field championship with a fifth-place finish on the anchor leg of the 1,600-meter relay. He also helped the Cardinal to a fourth consecutive win over rival California at the Big Meet with a third-place finish in the 800, and he helped the 1,600 relay team place 22nd during Stanford’s sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In 2010, Castro participated in a cross country season that led to a Pac-10 cross country championship for the Cardinal, but he competed in only one race during the track season due to injury.

Castro placed 13th in the 800 at the 2009 MPSF Indoor Championships with a career-best run of 1 minute, 52.77 seconds. As a freshman, he finished 26th at the MPSF Championships in the 400, ran a collegiate-best time of 49.40 seconds in the 400 at the University of Washington Invitational, and ran season outdoor bests in the 200 (22.86) and the 400 (50.69) at the Davis quad meet.

While at Sonora Union High School, Castro helped capture the 2005 Sac-Joaquin Section team title, then took the 2006 section titles in the 800, 1,600 and 1,600 relay. He also helped Sonora to second place in the 2006 cross country section meet and was named Athlete of the Meet at the Gold Rush Elite Invitational that same year.

Castro is a native of the Yosemite foothills, northeast of Merced. He is also a research associate, conducting interdisciplinary research with faculty in the Cognitive and Information Sciences program in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, with an eye on graduate school in the future.

Here is what he wrote on my blog.

About me
I am a student at Stanford University and am looking forward to graduating in June. I run on the Track and Field and Cross Country Teams here, and will be graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Science, Technology, and Society. My family and extended family tend to live and work around Yosemite National Park because my father and his brothers and sisters are descendants of the original inhabitants of Ahwahnee. They claim both Paiute, of the Eastern Sierra, and Miwok, of the Mariposa area. As Southern Sierra Miwok becomes a moribund language, and the two or three speakers left age well into their 90's, it is well past the time to preserve and spread our existing knowledge of this culture. Currently our tribe is seeking federal recognition from the BIA, and my family is helping to build a traditional village upon the site of my father's, grandfather's, and great-grandfather's home in Yosemite Valley. Also, faculty at the University of California Merced plan to create a virtual interactive replica of the original village with my ancestors as avatar guides through their home. I hope to document the process and spread awareness for preservation of the true history of Yosemite Valley.

Wisconsin, Florida State Now Are Atop National Coaches Poll in DI

November 1, 2011

NEW ORLEANS – Wisconsin's men's cross country team is the new number one squad in the country according to the nation's coaches. After a very busy conference championship weekend, the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll for NCAA's Division I reflect those who made the best case for a spot among the nation's elite. The focus will shift to NCAA Regional Championships in the coming days as Wisconsin takes over the men's top spot for the first time since 2007 and Florida State's women retain the No. 1 position for the second-straight voting week.

AROUND THE POLLS

MEN

* Wisconsin takes over as the new No. 1 team in the land. The Badgers won the Big Ten Championship on Sunday, and for the 13th-consecutive time, with a commanding performance, in scoring just 17 points. Wisconsin claimed seven of 12 first-place votes in the poll and are on top of the national poll for the first time since September 25, 2007.

* No. 2 Oklahoma State topped No. 5 Oklahoma for the Big 12 Championship title, 30-43. The Cowboys, the two-time defending NCAA Champions, had been ranked No. 1 since the preseason.

* No. 3 BYU unseated No. 8 Portland from their 32-year perch atop the West Coast Conference podium with a 25-32 win over the Pilots. The Cougars joined the WCC for the first time in July.

* No. 4 Colorado has reached a season-high ranking after winning the Pac-12 title, over then-No. 4 Stanford, 46-53, in their first-ever appearance at the league meet. The Buffs joined the Pac-12 for the first time this summer after enjoying a successful stay in the Big 12.

* Reaching season highs in the poll this week are No. 13 Villanova, No. 19 Michigan, and No. 25 North Carolina. Villanova scored a big victory, 43-94 over Georgetown for the Big East crown. Michigan tied for third with Minnesota at the Big Ten meet. And, North Carolina was third at the ACC Championships where No. 11 NC State took the title for the second time in three years.

* The Big East and Big Ten share the helm as the conferences with most teams in the top 30 with five. The Pac-12 and Big 12 each have four squads in the top 30, followed by the ACC (3).

WOMEN

* No. 1 Florida State dominated the ACC Championships in scoring just 20 points for their fourth-straight league crown.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field announced Tuesday the selection of all-time track and field greats Gail Devers (Sweetwater HS, San Deigo 1984; UCLA 1989), Maurice Greene (UCLA), Vince Matthews, and Clarence Demar, along with standout coach Bob Timmons, into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.

The five will be inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame, along with 2010 Hall selection Craig Virgin, on Saturday evening, December 3, at the Jesse Owens Hall of Fame Banquet, which will be held in conjunction with 2011 USATF Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Mo.

USATF today (Tuesday) will host a teleconference with Devers, Greene, Matthews and Virgin. For dialing information and specifics, see the bottom of this announcement.

Devers, Greene selected as “moderns”
Devers, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, Greene, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder, and Virgin, a two-time World Cross Country individual champion, all made the Hall of Fame as Modern Athletes, which include those retired less than 25 years. Virgin was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2010, but deferred his induction until this year when the Annual Meeting was scheduled to take place in St. Louis, near his current hometown.

Matthews, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and Demar, a seven-time winner of the Boston Marathon, will be inducted as Veteran Athletes as each has been retired for longer than 25 years.

Timmons, who coached seven Olympians, 16 world record holders and mentored Jim Ryun to the first sub-4-minute high school mile, will be inducted representing the Coaches.

The National Track & Field Hall of Fame is located at The Armory Foundation, at 216 Fort Washington Avenue in Washington Heights, N.Y. For more information please visit http://ny.milesplit.com/pages/Hall-of-Fame

About the National Track & Field Hall of Fame

The finalists from each category are selected by a committee from a list of nominations. Members of the selection committees examine the nominations and evaluate their merit based on a set of criteria. Elections for Modern and Veteran athletes are held each year. Elections for Coaches are held in odd numbered years with Contributors elected in even numbered years. Hall of Fame inductees, members of the National Track & Field Hall of Fame Board and Committees and members of the media all vote on elections for the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Class of 2011 biographies
Modern Athletes

Gail Devers
Born: November 19, 1966

The career of Gail Devers was one of perseverance and dominance in women’s track and field. A career that saw her compete until the age of 40, Devers is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and 13-time World Indoor and Outdoor medalist. In 1991, near the beginning of her career, Devers was diagnosed with Graves Disease and began radiation treatment as doctors threatened to amputate her feet. Devers recovered to become one of the most dominant sprinters and hurdlers of her time. She won the 1992 Olympic gold medal in the 100m along with gold medals in the 100m and 4x100m in 1996. At the World Outdoor Championships she won three gold medals in the 100m hurdles (‘93, ‘95, ‘99) along with a gold medal in the 100m in 1993 and 4x100m in 1997. She won World Indoor Championships gold three times in the 60m (‘93, ‘97, ‘04) and one in the 60m hurdles (‘03). In 2007, at the age of 40, Devers won the 60m hurdles at the Millrose Games in 7.86 seconds, which was the fastest time in the world that year. A 10-time USA Outdoor 100m hurdles champion, she is a two-time winner of the ESPY for Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Maurice Greene
Born: July 23, 1974

Already a world champion, Maurice Greene became one of the all-time greats when he establish a world 100m record of 9.79 in 1999. From that point, Greene would collect four Olympic medals (two gold) and another six World Championships Indoor and Outdoor gold medals. 1999 was a breakthrough season for Greene. He won three gold medals at the World Outdoor Championships (100m, 200m, 4x100m) and the 60m gold medal at the World Indoor Championships. The world indoor record holder at 60 meters, he traveled to Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games and came home with gold in both the 100m and 4x100m. Perhaps his most memorable race occurred at the 2001 World Outdoor Championships when he injured his leg 60m into the final race and yet held on for the win. The injury nearly ended the brilliance of his career, but at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Greene he added a silver medal in the 4x100m and bronze in the 100m. By career’s end, Greene ran under 10 seconds in the 100m a total of 53 times, which was more than any other sprinter in history at that time. After retirement, he was known for competing in the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars.

Craig Virgin
Born: August 2, 1955

In the late 1970s and early 1980s Craig Virgin established himself as one of the best distance runners in the the world. His most impressive accomplishment was becoming the only American to win an individual World Cross Country championship, which he did twice (‘80, ‘81). The 1976 NCAA Cross Country champion, Virgin set seven U.S. national records on the roads and in track events. Virgin broke Steve Prefontaine’s national high school two-mile record before attending the University of Illinois. At Illinois, he won nine Big Ten Conference championships and eventually became the only American to qualify three times for the Olympic Games in the 10,000m (‘76, ‘80, ‘84). A three-time USA Outdoor champion (‘78, ‘79, ‘81) and 1980 Olympic Trials champion, Virgin broke Prefontaine’s American 10,000m record at 27:39.4 in 1979, which was also the second-fastest time ever run in the world at that time. Virgin is also a member of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame.

Veteran Athletes

Vince Matthews
Born: December 16, 1947

One of the more prominent long sprinters of his generation, Vince Matthews won a pair of Olympic gold medals in his career. Developing a fierce competition with Lee Evans in the 400m, Matthews was a member of the 1968 gold medal 4x400m relay, which established a world record of 2:56.16. It was a record that would stand for 24 years. Matthews was at his best in 1968. At a warmup meet prior to the Olympic Trials, he broke the world record in the 400m by running 44.4, but the time was not allowed due to his use of brush spikes. However, it was his performance during and following his gold medal run in the 400m at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich that most people remember. Following his gold medal race, in a continuation of the civil rights protests of John Carlos and Tommie Smith from 1968, Matthews and teammate Wayne Collett, who had won silver, paid little attention to the American flag and were visiting with one another during the playing of the national anthem at the medal ceremony. For their actions, both athletes were banned from Olympic competition by the IOC and therefore unable to defend their gold medal in the 4x400m. Matthews attended Johnson C. Smith University.

Clarence Demar
Born: June 7, 1888; Died: June 11, 1958

Until the day he died, Clarence Demar never quit running or quit fighting. In 1910, he was advised by doctors to give up running because of a heart murmur. That was one year before Demar won his first of a record seven Boston Marathons, a record that still stands today. He competed in a total of 33 Boston Marathons with his final one coming at the age of 65. His first Boston Marathon victory came in 1911 and his final win was in 1930. An athlete far ahead of his time, Demar was known for weekly running from Keene, N.H., to Boston and back, which was a total of 90 miles. For the past 33 years, Keene has hosted the Clarence Demar Marathon. In addition to his feats in Boston, Demar was the bronze medalist in the marathon at the 1924 Olympic Games. He also qualified for the 1912 Olympic Games. He was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in 2000.

Coach

Bob Timmons

Few people influenced more athletes than Bob Timmons. When his Hall of Fame career finally came to an end, Timmons had coached seven Olympians, 16 world record holders, 77 NCAA All-Americans and 24 NCAA champions. Some of his more famous protégés included Jim Ryun, who he coached at Wichita East High School, and Al Oerter, who he mentored at the University of Kansas. Under Timmons’ tutelage, Ryun, in his junior season, became the first high school runner ever to break four-minutes in the mile. Timmons then left for the track and field program at his alma mater of Kansas where he coached Oerter, who would win four Olympic gold medals in the discus. His coaching career at Kansas spanned 22 seasons and included four NCAA championships, 13 Big 8 indoor conference titles, 14 outdoor conference titles and four cross country conference titles. At the high school level, Timmons won 17 state titles in swimming, cross country and track and field. Always expecting the most from his athletes, Timmons is also a member of the University of Kansas Hall of Fame, the Drake Relays Hall of Fame, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, the Kansas High School Activities Hall of Fame and the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame.
