A Message from the President/Chair
An "Official" Thank-You
We all know that USA Track & Field exists because of the efforts of many types of contributors. But it is all too rare that we are in the same place, at the same time.

Three times per year, all the many constituencies of USA Track & Field do come together in a single location. At our Annual Meeting, membership, athletes, coaches, volunteers, agents, officials and staff convene to meet and strategize. It’s an important gathering, but only the administrators are truly in their element.

At the USA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, it’s a different story. As we saw in Albuquerque, athletes are there to compete, coaches to coach, volunteers to volunteer, officials to officiate, and so on down the line. Even our Board of Directors takes the opportunity to get down to business and meet in person. The USATF New Mexico association and the city of Albuquerque were gracious hosts for the second straight year.

Of course, the athletes are the stars of the show. Even in a so-called “off” year for indoor track, we still saw American records by Jillian Camarena-Williams in the women’s shot put and Jenn Suhr in the women’s vault, a surprising victory by Janay DeLoach in the women’s long jump, a meet record by Natasha Hastings in the women’s 400, a middle-distance double by Jenny Simpson and another great duel between Bernard Lagat and Galen Rupp in the men’s 3,000 meters.

But our veteran athletes, especially, will tell you that the people who really make the show run once the meet has begun are the Officials. When we are watching a meet in an arena or on television, officials are almost invisible, in spite of their red blazers or colorful polo shirts. But for the athletes, the opposite is true. They know the officials by their first names – especially field-event athletes, who can spend more than an hour interacting with their event officials at every meet. Watch closely next time and you’ll see throwers and jumpers shaking hands with officials at the end of competition. They are all on a first-name basis.

For running events, you’d better believe that athletes know officials as well. Even when I was an athlete, all those years ago, we knew exactly which starters were quick with the gun and who would hold us in the blocks.

In Albuquerque, I spent some time in the athlete warm-up and clerking areas. It’s where athletes, coaches, agents, official and shoe company reps spend can most often be found mingling. I saw warm welcomes between people who see each other a few times a year, at meets just like this one. I saw longtime official Karen Krsak greet a retired athlete and refer to him as her son. For his part, he called her his mother. She even took the opportunity to chastise me for not getting permission from my track Mom and Dad (she and her husband, official Len Krsak) to marry again. That is the spirit that sustains the sport.

Why do officials do it? Why do they fly across the country, often on their own dime, for little more than a new shirt and, if they are lucky, a hotel room? Like the rest of us, they love track and field and want to be of service to our great sport. And they’re not out there only for the professional meets. These are the same people who officiate local youth, high school, college, all-comers and masters meets as well.

As an organization, we cannot take them for granted; we must remember to applaud their commitment to helping all of our athletes achieve some level of success. The average age of our officials isn’t getting any younger. One of our strategic priorities should be focused on how we can attract new officials to fill in for those who retire. Additionally, we must make sure new officials are mentored and encouraged to achieve certification through USATF, to guarantee that we maintain the quality and expertise that exist in our officials’ ranks today. And we must ensure they are diverse – geographically, in terms of their event specialties, even in their demographics.

Most of all, like our athletes, we all must remember to thank them.

So to all of our dedicated officials, let me say to you what we can’t possibly say enough:

2008 Olympian joins Keflezighi, Hall, Abdirahman in his first 13.1-mile pro race on March 20



NEW YORK - (March 2, 2011) - U.S. Olympian, two-time U.S. 10,000 meter champion and U.S. indoor 5000 meter record holder Galen Rupp is the latest addition to a galaxy of American stars at the NYC Half on Sunday, March 20, it was announced by New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg.



In his first 13.1-mile race ever and only his second professional road race, Rupp will join the previously announced powerhouse trio of U.S. Olympians Ryan Hall, Meb Keflezighi and Abdi Abdirahman, along with standouts Patrick Smyth and Jason Lehmkuhle. The women's field features U.S. Olympian and World Championships bronze medalist Kara Goucher and USA Half-Marathon Championships runner-up Serena Burla.



"This is one of the most significant debuts the sport has seen," said Wittenberg. "We have cheered Galen through high school and college, and now it is our turn to cheer for him on the streets of New York, and look forward to many more opportunities to come."

Rupp, 24, of Portland, OR, earned back-to-back victories in the 10,000 meters in 2009 and 2010 at the USA Championships. He also set the American 5000m indoor record of 13:11.44 on February 19. Rupp is second on the all-time U.S. list for the 10,000 meters in 27:10.74. He competed in the 2008 Olympics in the 10,000 meters, where he finished 13th overall.



"I am excited to be able to participate in the NYC Half. With an emphasis on strength in my training this winter, I feel like this is a great time to try and tackle a longer distance," said Rupp. "The half-marathon will allow me to challenge myself in new ways, both mentally and physically. I am thrilled for this opportunity, and couldn't be happier that my first half-marathon will be in the streets of New York."



Growing up in Portland, Rupp was first coached by Alberto Salazar during high school. This helped lead him to a strong NCAA career at the University of Oregon that included holding all five distance titles during the 2008-09 season: cross country, 3000 and 5000 meters indoors, and 5000 and 10,000 meters outdoors. He is the only athlete in NCAA history to achieve this feat.



"As Galen's coach, the NYC Half appealed to me because Galen had done a tremendous amount of training with much higher mileage than normal to prepare for a 10K in Christchurch in February," said Salazar. "Due to the tragic earthquake, that meet was cancelled. I believe that it will be in Galen's interest to compete in a race out of his normal comfort zone against some of the best half-marathoners in the world. This experience and what he learns from it will make him better on the track this summer."

This will mark Rupp's first time racing professionally in New York City. In high school, he competed at the Armory, and while redshirting in 2008, he competed in the Millrose Games.



The NYC Half will again offer the largest half-marathon prize purse in the United States: $100,000. The men's and women's champions will each earn $20,000, the largest first-prize checks for a non-marathon race in the country. The race continues to attract leading professional athletes and recreational runners from around the world.

On a course designed to celebrate New York City, the NYC Half will take runners on a loop through Central Park, down Seventh Avenue through Times Square, across 42nd Street, and along the expansive West Side Highway to Battery Park in the heart of the city's financial district, finishing with a view of the Statue of Liberty.

K-State sophomore has high jumped over 7-7¾ this season

NEW ORLEANS – The Bowerman Men’s Watch Committee in conjunction with the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday their second update of the men’s watch list for collegiate track & field’s biggest award – The Bowerman. Kansas State sophomore Erik Kynard was added to the watch in this update.



Kynard leaped on to the scene with a 7-7¾ (2.33m) clearance in winning the high jump at the Tyson Invitational on February 12. Only two other collegians (Hollis Conway and Brian Brown) in indoor history have jumped higher than Kynard. The sophomore has won all five competitions in which he has entered this year, including the Big 12 Championships. Kynard has won each of those competitions by clearing at least 7-3¾ (2.23m).

IN 2011: In his first 5k of the indoor season, Chelanga recorded a then world-leading and current collegiate-leading time of 13:41.35 on his home 200-meter, flat track on January 29. Chelanga notched a would-be collegiate leader of 7:48.24 in the 3000 meters at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix where he finished fourth in a professional-loaded field. Because no collegians were involved in that competition. Chelanga tallied a 7:50.92 clocking at 3000 meters in placing fifth overall at the Flotrack Husky Classic. Chelanga added to his tally of Big South Championships with a Mile crown (4:16.88) this season.





Will Claye, Florida

IN 2011: Claye stand second nationally in the triple jump with a season’s best of 56-4 (17.17m) achieved in finishing runner up to teammate Christian Taylor at the SEC Championships. Claye is also eighth in the country in the long jump, having notched a season best of 26-1 (7.95m) in taking third at the Tyson Invitational. Claye added a third-place showing in the long jump at the SEC meet, placing behind only Arkansas’ Tarik Batchelor and LSU’s Zedric Thomas – both members of the national top five of the event this year.





Jeff Demps, Florida

IN 2011: After opening the season with a 6.57 in winning the Virginia Tech Elite, Demps has twice more clocked sub-6.60 in the 60 meters, including when he won the SEC title in the event for the second-straight year with a 6.55. Demps ranks No. 2 nationally in the 60, behind only Oklahoma’s Mookie Salaam (6.54).





Mason Finley, Kansas

IN 2011: Finley has three wins in the books so far in 2011 in his signature event – the shot put. His opener, a 67-11½ (20.71m) heave to win at the Missouri-Kansas dual leads the rest of Division I by more than two feet feet. Last weekend, at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, Finley was upset by Nebraska’s Luke Pinkelman who now stands No. 2 on the descending order list (65-10¼, 20.07m).





Walter Henning, LSU

Senior, Throws, Kings Park, N.Y. (St. Anthony’s HS)



IN 2011: Henning continues not to miss in the weight throw. The LSU strongman has won ten-straight against collegiate competition with the 35-lb. weight – four of which has come from 2011 season, which included his third-straight SEC crown. At the LSU Twilight on Feb. 18, Henning notched his season’s best throw of 76-6¼ (23.32m). Henning’s personal best in the event is 78-1 (23.80m).





Kirani James, Alabama

Sophomore, Sprints, Gouyave, Grenada



IN 2011: On every occasion in which he has stepped on the track for the 400 meters this season, Kirani James has set a new world leader. Starting on Feb. 12 when he ran 45.47 (oversized) to win Notre Dame Meyo Invitational, then on Feb. 26 for the preliminary round of the SEC Championships when he ran 45.37. And, for the trifecta, James, who is only 18, clocked 44.80 in the SEC final to not only set another world record, but it also set a new world junior all-time best. The time places him in the top five of the all-time world indoor list and only Kerron Clement’s (Florida)world record of 44.57 set in 2005 stands as a better all-time collegiate mark.





Erik Kynard, Kansas State

IN 2011: Kynard leaped on to the scene with a 7-7¾ (2.33m) clearance in winning the high jump at the Tyson Invitational on February 12. IN 2011: Taylor sent quite a message in winning the SEC Championship triple jump on his final attempt. With a mark of 56-11½ (17.36m) that not only won the event for the third-straight time and set a new SEC record, he became the third all-time best collegian indoors in the event. Only Charlie Simpkins (Baptist, 17.50m, 57-5, 1986) and Mike Conley (Arkansas, 17.40m, 57-1, 1985) have jumped farther in indoor collegiate history than Taylor. The Gator also finished eighth at the SEC meet in the long jump and has a season’s best in the event of 25-0 (7.62m), good for the national top 25.





The Bowerman Advisory Board appointed four of its members to comprise The Bowerman Men’s Watch Committee and another four of its members to make up The Bowerman Women’s Watch Committee. The committee will release their next men’s update on Wednesday, March 16. The three men and three women finalists will be named late June.

Nation’s best to compete at USA Masters Indoor Champs in Albuquerque

INDIANAPOLIS – More than 800 of the nation’s finest masters athletes featuring 77 reigning World Indoor champions, 34 current World Outdoor champions and numerous Olympians will compete March 4-6 at the 2011 USA Indoor Masters Track and Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

The meet will feature athletes ranging in age from 35-96 in a display of speed, strength, and endurance for all ages. Track events will range from 60 meters to 3,000 meters, while field events will include the full range of indoor jumps and throws. All-time great Raschker headlines the field

Standout performers slated to compete at the championships include Two-time Sullivan Award Finalist, Philippa Raschker. The Hall of Famer from Marietta, Georgia —twice over the past six years a Sullivan Award finalist as America’s top amateur athlete—along with Apolo Ohno, Lebron James, and Michael Phelps -- and the most decorated masters athlete in history — made news off the track in late 2010 by posing nude (tastefully) for ESPN the Magazine’s second annual Body Issue. She won ten gold medals at the 2007 World Masters Championships and nine medals at the 2010 Indoor Worlds, which included seven gold medals. She’s entered here in the W60 age-group in seven events (60m, 200m, 60m hurdles, high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump).

Another featured athlete to watch this weekend is M60 Nolan Shaheed, who is a world class jazz musician that played lead trumpet for all-time greats Dizzie Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. Shaheed earned Southern Californian male USATF Masters Athlete of the Year honors in 2010 (along with Ralph Maxwell) and should duck under the 5-minute barrier in the mile, where he holds the world indoor record of 4:57.06. He’s already run 4:58.21 this season. He’s also entered in the 800m and 3,000m.


Olympians entered in the championships include:

W45 Patricia Porter of Albuquerque, who tied for eighth in the high jump in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 as University of Oregon alumna Trish King. She is married to 1984 and 1988 10 km Olympian Pat Porter. Here she’ll compete in the shot put, high jump, long jump and 60m hurdles.

M45 Christopher "Chris" Faulknor: An Olympian for Jamaica in 1988, Faulknor ran the leadoff leg of his 4x100 relay team, which took fourth and set a national record. He’s the founder of the Southern California Running Cougars youth track team and coaches at Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, Calif.

Age is no factor!


The oldest athletes entered are both legends: San Diego’s Leland McPhie, 96, and Betty Jarvis of Aberdeen, N.C, 95, who hold dozens of records between them. McPhie boasts world records in the high jump, long jump and triple jump in his age group. Jarvis holds 13 American age-group records in the throws.

ATHLETES TO WATCH IN ALBUQUERQUE, By Age Group:

M45 Chris Bates: Oregon resident set a stunning world indoor record of 3,979 points in the pentathlon at Kamloops a year ago. He’s entered in that event here as well as the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump.

M50 Bruce McBarnette: Virginia resident is the defending world outdoor and indoor champion. A 2010 inductee to the USATF Masters Hall of Fame, he has raised the age-group American record in the outdoor high jump at least 11 times. It’s currently at 1.94 meters/6 feet 4.25. He also holds the indoor M50 record of 1.93m/6-4.

M60 Bill Collins: Moving into a new age group, the Texan who boasts several world masters sprint records, will go after new age-group bests in the 60, 200 and 400m. Outdoors, he owns world 100m records in three age groups. He’ll try to add the M60 indoor 60m record to his M55 world record. In 2007, Collins was named World Masters Athlete of the Year.

M65 Stephen Robbins: An Ohio resident and business-management textbook author, Robbins is a 2005 inductee in the USATF Masters Hall of Fame, having won countless sprint titles on the world level and set many records. He’s entered in the 60m and 200m, and holds the American record in the 60m of 8.04 seconds. He is also entered in the 200m.

M90 Ralph Maxwell: Texan shared Male USATF Masters Athlete of the Year award in 2010 after setting world records in the indoor 60m hurdles and the outdoor 80m and 200m hurdles. At Albuquerque, he’ll run the hurdles as part of the pentathlon and also is entered in the 60m, 200m, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault and shot put.

M90 Orville Rogers: Another Texan will challenge Maxwell in the 60m, 200m and shot put, and also will compete in his better events — the 400m, 800m, mile and 3,000m. Rogers holds M90 world indoor records in the 800m (4:19.97) and mile (9:56.58).

W45 Renee Henderson: A New Jersey resident and a Lahti world champion in 2009, Henderson is the top-ranked America in all sprint events and is entered in the 60m and 200m. She holds American indoor records in the 60m, 200m and 400m and American outdoor records in the 100m and 200m.

W50 Liz Palmer: Northern Californian set American outdoor record in the 80m hurdles last summer and will be going after Phil Raschker’s age-group American record in the 60m hurdles of 9.38 seconds. At an outdoor all-comers meet in February, she ran the 60m hurdles in 9.36. She’s also entered in the 60m and 200m.

W50 Oneitha “Neni” (pronounced knee-knee) Lewis: The New Yorker was named overall USATF Masters Athlete of the Year in 2010 on the strength of an incredible debut year in the W50 age group. She shattered world records in the hammer, weight and throws pentathlon. She also topped the American records in the superweight and ultraweight pentathlon. She’s entered in the shot put, weight throw and superweight — and will face competition from world champion Carol Finsrud.

W55 Rita Hanscom: The San Diegan broke the world heptathlon record, won a fistful of gold medals at the Lahti world championships in 2009 and finished that season by being named IAAF Masters Athlete of the Year. She resumed her title chase in 2010, winning four gold medals and a silver at Kamloops. Here she’s entered in the 60m, 200m, 400m, 60m hurdles, high jump, pole vault, long jump and pentathlon.

W65 Nadine O’Connor: The suburban San Diegan and Hall of Famer holds the world record in the outdoor 100m, and her vault marks are so off the charts that she regularly beats women 15 years her junior. In 2009, she scored the highest point total in the decathlon of anyone on earth: 10,234 points under an old scoring system. Here she’s entered in the 60m, 200m, 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and pentathlon.

W70 Kathy Bergen: The Southern Californian and Hall of Famer set world records in the high jump in 2010. Better known for her prowess as a sprinter, Bergen is the fastest woman over 70 in the world and her 2010 world outdoor record for 100m (14.76 seconds) was run into a wind. Here she’s entered in the 60m, 200m and high jump.

W75 Mary Harada: The Massachusetts resident and Hall of Famer ran an indoor mile in 8:21.50 in January — 5 seconds under the listed world record. Her outdoor world age-group record of 7:55.74, set last June, shows she has potential to go sub-8 in Albuquerque. She’s also entered in the 800m and 3,000m.
