National Club Cross Country titles on the line this weekend
INDIANAPOLIS - Defending women's team champions Boulder Running Company/adidas and two-time men's national team titlists ZAP Fitness (Blowing Rock, N.C.) will join more than 100 USATF clubs Saturday at the 2009 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships at Masterson Station Park in Lexington, Ky.
The 12th annual USATF National Club Cross Country Championships features America's top post-collegiate club teams from across the United States vying for top honors and bragging rights as the nation's top cross country team. More than 1,000 competitors are expected at the event, which features a 10-kilometer men's race and a 6-kilometer women's race. Clubs will compete for a total prize purse of $30,000, with $25,000 going to the top open teams.
Looking to win their third team title, ZAP Fitness will have to contend with a strong squad from the Asics Aggie Running Club (Martinez, Calif.), Club Northwest (Seattle, Wash.) and 2000 team champions Wisconsin Runner Racing Team (Madison, Wis.).
Challenging for the individual title will be David Jankowski of Zap Fitness, who recently finished third at the historic Manchester Road Race. Jankowski will face the Aggie's Sergio Reyes and Phil Reid as well as the Boston Athletic Association's Lucas Meyer.
On the women's side, 2009 World Championships marathoner Tera Moody will lead the women of the Boulder Running Company/adidas as they defend their national title. Challenging for the women's team title will be the ladies of the Boston Athletic Association as they seek their fourth team crown. The women of McMillan Elite (Flagstaff, Ariz.) are also expected to contend for the team title.
Moody will also be in contention for the individual title along with Kasie Enman of the Boston Athletic Association, and Lindsay Allen of McMillan Elite.

Flanagan enters USA Half Marathon Championships
U.S. long distance running standout Shalane Flanagan (Pittsboro, N.C.), who won a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, will make her half-marathon debut on January 17 at the 2010 USA Half Marathon Championships hosted by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.
The 28-year-old Flanagan has been one of the best middle-distance runners in the U.S. over the past six years, making two Olympic teams and setting American records on the track at 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Flanagan was the USA champion at 5,000 meters in 2005 and 2007, before winning the U.S. Olympic Trials at 10,000 meters in 2008. That victory sent her to Beijing, where she became only the second American woman in history to medal in that event at the Olympic Games. Her American Record of 30:22:22 run in China still stands.
Joining Flanagan on the starting line at the championships will be the top two finishers from the 2009 national championships. Magdalena Lewy Boulet (Oakland, Calif.), who crossed the finish line in 1:11:47, will be back to defend her title, and runner-up Kelly Jaske (Portland, Ore.) also will be among the top seeds in the race.
Among the men currently committed to run in the National Championship race are 2008 Half Marathon champion James Carney (Lafayette, Colo.), along with Josh Moen and Patrick Smyth (both Minneapolis, Minn.), who finished second and third respectively in the 2009 USA 10 Mile Championships.
Gotcher steps up to marathon
Brett Gotcher (Flagstaff, Ariz.), who finished third in the 2009 USA Half Marathon Championships, will return to Houston in January, but will move up in distance. The 25-year-old Gotcher will make his marathon debut as one of the top seeds in the 38th running of the Chevron Houston Marathon.
The former Stanford University All-American at 10,000 meters won his first national road title in September, claiming the 20 km crown in 58:57 in New Haven, Conn.
Houston is hosting the men's half marathon championships for the sixth consecutive year, while the city is home to the women's title race for the fourth straight time.

Lutz named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Marcus High School junior Craig Lutz (Dallas, Texas) has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the Nike Cross National Championships Saturday in Portland, Ore.
The Texas Class 5A state cross country champ, Lutz won the men's title in a course record 15 minutes 9.2 seconds. After taking the early lead in the race and then falling back into the pack, a late surge in the final few meters of the race saw Lutz edge past New Jersey's Joe Rosa for the win. Lutz's next race will be this weekend at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.
Now in its eighth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

Cal Men's Recruiting Class Ranked No. 4 in the Country
Cal Men's Recruiting Class Ranked No. 4 in the Country
Track & Field News Recognizes Incoming Group of Golden Bears
Incoming disntance runner Collin Jarvis was a consistent member of Cal's top five in cross country during the fall.
Nov. 30, 2009
BERKELEY - California's men's track & field recruiting class for the upcoming 2010 season has been ranked as the fourth best in the country by Track & Field News, the magazine announced in its January issue.
The group of Golden Bear incoming athletes signed by head coach Tondy Sandoval and his staff includes a pair of California state high school champions, a sub-four-minute miler and a multi-event All-American.
Track & Field News tabbed Hammed Suleman, out of Deer Valley High School in Antioch, "the top prep catch." The 2009 California state champion in the triple jump with a winning leap of 49-7.50, he owns a best of 51-2 in the event, which earned him the No. 2 spot in the magazine's prep rankings. Suleman also has a best of 24-1 in the long jump, which was just two inches shy of the top high school mark in the country last year.
Chase Wheeler will add to Cal's jumps depth after claiming the state championship in the long jump. Wheeler, who attended De La Salle HS in nearby Concord, went a distance of 25-2.25. He also owns bests of 10.70 in the 100 meters and 21.68 in the 200.
James Brewer, a transfer from the University of Bath in England, joins the Bears after running a 3:54.80 mile at the Aviva London Grand Prix on July 25. The runner-up at the European Under-23 Championships in the 1500 meters this past summer, he owns a best of 1:47.92 in the 800m and 3:39.01 in the 1500m. Brewer was the European Junior runner-up in the 800 in 2007. Brewer was named to the UK's National team and will be in Berlin for the 2009 World Championships.
Adding to Cal's distance corps is Collin Jarvis out of Rancho Buena Vista HS, who was the state runner-up in the 3200m with a time of 8:53.78. He also posted a time of 4:12.02 in the mile, which was the fourth-fastest mark among California high school runners in 2009. This past fall, Jarvis was a consistent member of the Bears' top five in cross country.
Michael Morrison, who has transferred from the University of Florida, earned All-American honors at the 2008 NCAA indoor championships in the heptathlon and was the 2007 SEC Indoor and Outdoor Freshman Athlete of the Year. He captured the 2008 Mt. SAC Relays title in the decathlon (career-best 7,803) and has also cleared 16-10.75 outdoors in the pole vault. Morrison has a HS best of 17-6.25 in the pole vault.
The Bears have brought in several others who were state finalists, including Thomas Blocker (400m), who has a best of 47.69 at the distance, and Charles Saseun (runner-up in 100m as a junior), who has run 10.52 in the 100 (wind-aided 10.47) and 21.68 in the 200. Sprinter Dash Oliver brings 10.63 speed in the 100, as well.
The rest of the class includes Maurice Valentine Jr. (high jump, 100mHH), Chad Jones (triple jump, high jump, 110mHH), Matt Petersen (distance), brothers Cody and Simon Schmidt (distance), Iona transfer Chris Vizcaino (distance), Mike Tracy (high jump), Jeff Butler (throws), Andres Diaz (distance), Renaud Poizat (distance), J.P. Slater (distance), Cal Poly transfer Connor Landry (pole vault) and Ethan Mark (middle distance).

Larsen receives Giegengack Award
INDIANAPOLIS- Legendary track and field, cross country and long distance running coach Bob Larsen on Saturday was honored with USA Track & Field's Robert Giegengack Award at the Jesse Owens Awards and National Track & Field Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Indianapolis. The event was held in conjunction with the 2009 USATF Annual Meeting.
Named in honor of former Yale University coach and 1964 Olympic Team head coach Robert Giegengack, the award goes to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and success of USA Track & Field and the larger community of the sport. In the past, the award has gone to coaches, officials, Association leaders, administrators, and others from all segments of USATF. The USATF Board of Directors votes to select each year's winner.
Larsen, who retired in 1999 as head coach of the UCLA cross country program after 21 seasons, and who led the Bruins track and field program for 15 seasons, became a co-founder of the highly successful Team USA Running Group. Now known as the Mammoth Track Club, the Mammoth, Calif.-based elite team's goal has been to bring U.S. distance running performances back to the level of international success that was seen in the 1970s and 80s.
Since beginning operations in March of 2001, the Mammoth Track Club has produced multiple national champions, set numerous records and has placed a number of its athletes on U.S. Olympic and world championship teams.
Larsen's star pupil is 2004 Olympic men's marathon silver medalist and U.S. 10,000m record holder Meb Keflezighi, who Larsen began mentoring when both were at UCLA. As a Bruin, Keflezighi won four NCAA titles as a junior in 1997 -- cross country, indoor 5000m, and outdoor 5000/10,000m (becoming the eighth athlete in NCAA history to win this double) -- and he became the third athlete in NCAA history to win the outdoor double and the cross country title in the same season (1997).
Keflezighi received worldwide attention when earlier this year he became the first American man since 1982 to cross the finish line first at the ING New York City Marathon. Keflezighi ran a brilliant strategic race, pulling away from four-time Boston Marathon Champion Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya in the final two miles to win in a personal-best time of 2:09:15. The win gave Keflezighi the USA Marathon Championship and his fourth national title of the year. His performance also placed him atop the USA Running Circuit rankings for 2009.
At UCLA, Larsen was the head cross country coach for 21 seasons and head track coach for 15 seasons. His track and field teams won two NCAA Outdoor titles, and he was named national coach of the year in 1987, 1988 and 1995. The nine-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Larsen was named the NCAA National Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1980.
Under Larsen, the Bruins had a remarkable dual meet record of 118-3-1; 12 unbeaten seasons, including five of his last six years (the Bruins were 10-0 in 1998, '97 and '96, 8-0 in 1995 and 9-0 in 1994), with home dual winning streaks of 31 (1971-76), 32 (1979-83), 39 (1984-89) and 51 (1991-99). During his 15 years as head coach, Larsen never lost to archrival USC in dual competition.
"Bob Larsen is one of the most respected and deserving coaches in our sport," said USATF Chairman and President Stephanie Hightower. "I am proud to have this opportunity to recognize him for his many accomplishments."

Eric Capelle captured the men's 60-meter dash title as well as helping his 4x400-meter relay team to a win on Saturday.
NAMPA, Idaho - In the second day of the 2009 Jacksons Open, the Boise State track and field team closed out their season opener with many successes. The Bronco men snagged five individual event titles while the women captured four event wins on the day at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center.
Carrying over from the first day of competition, the men's heptathlon was completed on Saturday morning with the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000-meter dash. Bronco Kurt Felix never surrendered his lead from day one, finishing second in the 1,000-meters, third in the hurdles and fourth in the pole vault. With his successful day, he totaled 5,346 points which is good for an NCAA provisional mark (5,325 is the standard).
Eric Capelle led a trio of Broncos in the 60-meter dash, clocking a time of 6.92 seconds to win the event. Per Strandquist placed second in a time of 7.07 seconds while Marlon Douglas took third in 7.08 seconds. Capelle joined Jeff Daw, Mikio Island and Paul Roberston in the men's 4x400-meter relay to capture another first place finish, running in a time of 3-minutes, 22.31 seconds.
Also capturing two wins on the day was senior Zacharias Arnos, winning the long jump and triple jump. He captured the long jump title with a jump of 24-feet, 1 ½-inches. His triple jump mark of 51-feet, 6 1/2-inches was good for the win, but 2-inches short of the NCAA provisional mark.
Continuing Bronco sweeps, the Boise State women went 1-2-3 in the 200-meter dash with Taryn Campos leading the pack with a 25.52 second mark. Destiny Gammage clocked a time of 25.61 seconds for a second-place finish while Joi Glass placed third with a time of 25.74 seconds.
In the 500-meter dash, Emily Funkhouser captured a win in a time of one-minute, 18.25 seconds while Chrystal Moore took second-place with a one-minute, 27.54 second finish.
The Boise State "B" relay team had a surprise win in the women's 4x400-meter relay, edging out the Boise State "A" team for the win. The "B" team, made up by Glass, Funkhouser, Erica Hill and Sam Alderman, broke the tape at 4-minutes, 0.40-seconds to earn the win. The "A" team, Campos, Moore, Marjani Maldonado and Lacy Hopkins, ran a time of 4-minutes, 8.53-seconds for the second-place finish.
Earning the final win for Boise State was a three-way tie between Broncos BreAnna Craig, Heidi Dorling and Annelise Bertleson. The trio cleared a height of 11-feet, 11 ¾-inches and recorded the same number of misses, allowing the three-way tie.
Boise State was joined by Portland State, Northwest Nazarene and Concordia (Ore.) as well as a handful of track clubs and unattached athletes in the 2009 Jacksons Open.
The Broncos will take over a month off from competition, before returning to the Jacksons Indoor Track when they host the Boise State Duals on Jan. 23, 2010.

Navy tops five-team field at 2009-10 season opener
Sophomore Amanda Phelps led Navy's efforts in both the shot put and 20-lb. weight throw in Tuesday's opener
Dec. 1, 2009
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 2009-10 Navy women's track and field season got off to a successful start as the Midshipmen (4-0) topped the five-team field at the season-opening Lid-Lifter meet Tuesday evening at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
Navy produced five individual event wins en route to dual-scored victories over Morgan State (239-110), Mount St. Mary's (248-133), Towson (230-207) and American (265-76).
"We are happy to get this first meet under our belts and get the year underway," said Navy head coach Carla Criste. "It's a long season, but we put up some good times for this stage of the year and were encouraged by what we saw out of our girls tonight."
Senior Erica Ziel (Saginaw, Mich.) opened the meet by cruising to victory in the 5,000 with a time of 17:52.03 - a full 23.7 seconds ahead of the next fastest competitor.
Fellow senior and 2009-10 Navy indoor team captain Abby Gesecki (Nanticoke, Pa.) also contributed an individual victory in the 800, crossing the finish in 2:19.34.
Meanwhile in the 3,000, sophomore Mollie Hebda (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the top scoring performer with a career-best 10:11.84 effort.
Sophomore Christine Scales (Monte Sereno, Calif.) took home top honors in the pole vault with a successful clearance of 11'3¾"(3.45m), matching her career-best effort. Senior Jessica Schlaegel (Nashport, Ohio) earned a share of second behind Scales, clearing the bar at 10'4" (3.15m).
In the high jump, freshman Kristin Smith (Harleysville, Pa.) was victorious in her collegiate debut with a winning clearance of 5'5" (1.65m).
In the 20-lb. weight throw competition, sophomore Amanda Phelps (Oceanside, Calif.) was Navy's top performer, achieving a new career-long with a 49'11" (15.21m) toss to place second. Phelps' previous best of 48'8-1/4 (14.84m) came in a third-place effort during last February's Star Meet victory over Army. Phelps also added a runner-up finish with a 40'2"(12.24m) showing in the shot put.
Navy will return to action in a little over a month's time at the Delaware Invitational on Jan. 8, in Newark, Del.

Seaman, Vaill named outstanding U.S. Race Walkers of the Year
INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field has announced that Tim Seaman and Teresa Vaill have been named the 2009 recipients of the Captain Ron Zinn Awards that honor the outstanding U.S. male and female race walkers of the year. Formal presentation of the awards will take place December 5 in ceremonies held in conjunction with USATF's Annual Meeting in Indianapolis.
These awards commemorate the achievements of Capt. Ron Zinn, who lost his life in combat during the Vietnam War. Zinn was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team during the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo, and his sixth-place finish in the 20 km event is one of America's all-time top international race walking performances.
This year's men's winner is two-time Olympian Tim Seaman, who won the USA men's 20 km title for the sixth time in his career, and he also dominated the USA Race Walk Grand Prix. In winning the USA 30 km title on October 18, Seaman captured his 41st career U.S. race walk crown. Only National Track & Field Hall of Famers Ron Laird (65) and Henry Laskau (42) own more national race walk titles in U.S. history than Seaman. A resident of San Diego, Calif., Seaman was also the recipient of the Ron Zinn Award in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2005.
2004 Olympian Teresa Vaill won the U.S. women's 20 km race walk title for the sixth time of her career in 2009, and also finished atop the overall USA Race Walk Grand Prix standings for women. A resident of Tallahasse, Fla., Vaill was also the recipient of the Ron Zinn Award in 1994, 1995, 2004, 2005 and 2007.
Barron, Chin win Laskau Awards
Trevor Barron and Allison Chin have been named the 2009 recipients of the Henry Laskau Awards, presented annually to the top Junior (19 and younger) race walkers in the U.S.
Barron and Chin, both 17-years old, dominated the junior scene in their respective gender during the 2009 season. Both individuals won the two major race walk competitions on U.S. soil for juniors, the Americas Race Walk Cup Trials in Pharr, Texas, and the USATF Junior Nationals in Eugene, Ore.
Barron, a member of the South Park Track Club near Pittsburgh, Pa., went on to finish fourth at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy in an American record time, one of three new American junior records he demolished during 2009.
A resident of Dayton, Ohio, and member of the Miami Valley Track, Allison Chin placed ninth at the Americas Race Walk Cup in El Salvador, finished fifth at the Junior Pan Am Games in Trinidad and roared to a new personal best time with a second place finish at the annual USA vs Canada Junior Dual.
Salvage named Riban Award winner
Race organizer, photographer, and writer, Jeff Salvage of Philadelphia has been named the 2009 winner of the Mike Riban Award for outstanding contributions to race walking in the U.S. by an individual. Salvage has tirelessly contributed to race walking thru his coverage of national and international competitions and the production of numerous books on coaching. A Quick Guide to Race Walking is his latest work in this area.
The Mike Riban Award for outstanding contributions by a USATF Association will be awarded to the South Texas Association, which strongly supported the 2009 Junior Camp and played host to the Americas Race Walk Cup Trials.

Ryan and Sara Hall named Visa Humanitarian Athletes of the Year
INDIANAPOLIS - 2008 Olympian Ryan Hall and his wife, 1,500m runner Sara Hall, who in 2009 started The STEPS Foundation, have been named Visa Humanitarian Athletes of the Year by USA Track & Field.
The Halls will be honored on Saturday, December 5 at the Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Indianapolis, Ind. The event is held in conjunction with USA Track & Field's 2009 Annual Meeting.
In 2009, Ryan Hall finished third in the Boston Marathon, running 2:09:40. It was the first time an American male has finished on the podium since 1984. Hall then finished fourth overall in the ING NYC Marathon in 2:10:36 to take second in the USA Championship race. Also in New York this year, Sara Hall took third place in the Fifth Avenue Mile in a race that was so close that first through fourth place all finished in 4:23.
In September of this year, the Halls launched the Hall Steps Foundation, which will fund programs to create a better life for youth living in poverty in the United States and abroad. The foundation aims to use running's lessons to encourage people to take "small steps" toward the goal of tackling issues like clean water, sex trafficking, and leadership development. Domestically, the foundation plans to create mentoring programs for at-risk youth to train for a race with an adult runner.
Said Sara, "Ryan and I are very honored to receive this award, and wish we could be there to accept it in person! Both of us hope through our charitable work, including founding The Hall Steps Foundation, to leave a positive mark on our sport and inspire lives along the way! Our goal through The Hall Steps Foundation is to engage the running community is social justice efforts, and we are excited to see the response of the running community so far! We are very thankful to Visa and USATF for providing us with events and a platform on which to compete, and it is great to give back with all we've been blessed with. We will be using the funds from the award to go towards our social justice efforts through The Hall Steps Foundation. Thank you very much!"
The Halls announced their foundation in September in New York, where Sara ran the Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile that weekend and Ryan the ING New York City Marathon on November 1. They donated their winnings from those races to the foundation. Their charitable venture is a function of Fun 4 Kidz, an organization providing opportunities for disadvantaged children.
The Hall Steps Foundation, in connection with the New York Road Runners, also funded a Young Runners program in each of the five boroughs in New York City, helping more than 200 children learn the value of running.
"Ours can by its very nature be a selfish sport, but we are blessed that many American track and field athletes give back to their communities," USATF CEO Doug Logan said, "Sarah and Ryan Hall are incredible examples of how a humble selflessness can make running a vehicle to help others. That charity is a prime motivator for both of them is an example we can all learn from, in running and in life. It is with great admiration that I congratulate Ryan and Sara on receiving this richly deserved award."
"As a long-standing partner of USA Track & Field, Visa is proud to present the Visa Humanitarian of the Year to Ryan and Sara," said Michael Lynch, Head of Global Sponsorship Management, Visa Inc. "They are amazing role models and continue to inspire in and out of competition. We're proud to recognize their work with this award."
