The Canton, Conn., senior had to battle back for the win after crossing the halfway point at four kilometers in fifth-place. Less than two kilometers later, he was in a back-and-forth battle with Crain for the lead that lasted all the way until the very late stages of the race. LeDuc was able to pull away on the final stretch for the national crown.

His national title added to a 2013 resume that also includes a streak of five consecutive wins. He earned victories at the New England Region Championships, the NESCAC Championships and the Pre-National Invitational on this very course in Hanover. His women earned a race-best three All-America honors, led by fourth-place finish from Hannah Oneda.

The junior from Canon City, Colo., ran among the lead pack for the first five kilometers of the race, before breaking away with American International’s Mike Biwott. It wouldn’t be long before Stevens shook free of Biwott and ran an unchallenged 14:56.1 split over the last half of the race, 11 seconds faster than Olstad’s final push.

By the halfway point at three kilometers, she had already amassed what would be an insurmountable 12-second lead over Macy and the pack. She completed the first three kilometers in 10:22.9 and was able to maintain a 10:27.8 split over the second half, faster than all but one runner.

Cheserek, D'Agostino, Wetmore & Treacy Earn National Awards for Division I Cross Country
November 26, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday its National Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the NCAA Division I Cross Country season following the championships in Terre Haute, Ind., this past weekend, as voted on by the nation’s coaches.

NCAA Division I Cross Country individual champions Edward Cheserek of Oregon and Abbey D’Agostino of Dartmouth were named on Tuesday the men’s and women’s USTFCCCA National Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Mark Wetmore of Colorado and Ray Treacy of Providence earned the Bill Dellinger National Men’s Coach of the Year and the Peter Tegen National Women’s Coach of the Year, respectively, in leading their teams to national titles.

MEN’S NATIONAL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Edward Cheserek, Oregon
Cheserek did more than win a national championship, an impressive feat in its own right. In just his first NCAA championship race, the first-year man from Newark, N.J., dethroned the undefeated defending national champion Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech to become the first true freshman to claim the individual title since Indiana’s Bob Kennedy in 1988. He traversed the sloppy LaVern Gibson Championship Course — which ran 110 meters short of 10-kilometers to avoid staring in the mud — in Terre Haute, Ind., in 29:41.1, 18 seconds ahead of Kithuka.

After Kithuka made a move to break free of Cheserek mid-way through the race and looked to be well on his way to a second consecutive title, Cheserek made a devastating move of his own in the final two kilometers to overtake and pull away from Kithuka for the win. Behind his effort, the Ducks finished fifth in the team race.

Recent Winners:
2012: Kennedy Kithuka, Texas Tech
2011: Lawi Lalang, Arizona
2010: Sam Chelanga, Liberty
2009: Sam Chelanga, Liberty
2008: Galen Rupp, Oregon
Full Archive
The title avenged his loss to Kithuka earlier this season in a fourth-place finish at the Pre-National Invitational on the same course. He also won titles at the Pac-12 Championships and the West Region Championships, along with winning his collegiate debut at the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.

WOMEN’S NATIONAL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Courtesy: Image of Sport Abbey D’Agostino, Dartmouth
D’Agostino finished third at the NCAA Championships in 2011 and runner-up a year ago, and she completed the pattern and her collegiate cross country career with the individual title in 2013 in 20:00.3. The senior from Topsfield, Mass., bided her time through the first two-thirds of the six-kilometer race — shortened by 110 meters to avoid starting in the muck — in Terre Haute, Ind., before overtaking Iona’s Kate Avery for the lead.

Once she took the lead she didn’t look back, crossing the line more than three seconds ahead of Boise State’s Emma Bates in 20:03.9 and more than five seconds faster than Avery after handling the sloppy start/finish straight on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course with relative ease.

Recent Winners
2012: Betsy Saina, Iowa State
2011: Sheila Reid, Villanova
2010: Sheila Reid, Villanova
2009: Angela Bizzarri, Illinois
2008: Sally Kipyego, Texas Tech

The title caps an undefeated season that also included wins at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, the Ivy League Championship and the Northeast Regional Championship.

Recent Winners
2012: Dave Smith, Oklahoma State
2011: Mick Byrne, Wisconsin
2010: Dave Smith, Oklahoma State
2009: Dave Smith, Oklahoma State
2008: Vin Lananna, Oregon

Mark Wetmore, Colorado
Wetmore’s Colorado Buffaloes had to overtake both the No. 1 Northern Arizona Lumberjacks and the defending national champion No. 2 Oklahoma State Cowboys to claim the NCAA Division I Cross Country team title in 2013, which is exactly what they did. The Buffaloes posted a winning score of 149 points — the highest in Division I men’s history — to down Northern Arizona with 169 points.

Led by first-year runner Ben Saarel in ninth place, Wetmore guided a race-best four CU runners to All-American honors and led the Buffaloes to their fourth title in his 19-year tenure as head coach in Boulder, Colo.

His Colorado squad was ranked No. 1 in the nation following a win at the Pre-National Invitational on the same course in Terre Haute, and emerged victorious at the Pac-12 Championships.

In the men’s race, St. Olaf and North Central (Ill.) each finished with four All-Americans each, but it was St. Olaf that would take the title in a narrow, 84-86, victory over the 2011 and 2012 national champions. The women of Johns Hopkins, meanwhile, were able to defend their title with an 85-137 victory over Williams behind a race-best three All-Americans.

For men’s champion St. Olaf, third-place junior Grant Wintheiser and eighth-place junior Jake Brown led the way as the pre-meet No. 3 in the National Coaches Poll pulled the upset over North Central. Senior Brian Saska (17th) and sophomore Jake Campbell (31st) rounded out the Oles’ All-American honorees.

Runner-up senior John Crain and 10th-place senior Roger Klein paced the Cardinals, followed by senior Timothy Hird (33rd) and sophomore Troy Kelleher (35th).

Fourth-place Washington (Mo.) and sixth-place Central (Iowa) both put two All-Americans on the list.

Now the two-time-defending women’s champions, Johns Hopkins was led by fourth-place sophomore Hannah Oneda and the pair of senior Annie Monagle and junior Frances Loeb in 14th and 15th, respectively. The Blue Jays were just shy of a fourth with their No. 4 runner in 38th place.

Runner-up Williams, sixth-place NYU and eighth-place Oberlin were each represented by two All-Americans apiece.

In terms of conferences, both the CCIW and MIAC had five runners from their member schools in the men’s race earn All-America honors, and the UAA earned five nods in the women’s race.

St. Olaf’s four headline the MIAC, along with seventh-place junior Matt Berens of Bethel (Minn.), while North Central’s four and Elmhurst junior Will Cross (34th) represented the CCIW.

The NESCAC was next up with four honorees.

In the women’s race, the UAA was represented by fifth-place junior Lucy Cheadle of Washington (Mo.) and ninth-place Chicago sophomore Catherine Young, along with Brandeis senior Amelia Lundkvist (21st), and the NYU duo of sophomore Lily Corsaro (34th) and junior Emily Cousens (35th).

Johns Hopkins’ three All-Americans headlined the Centennial Conference’s four selections, and NESCAC also had four honorees.

Led by a nation-best four All-Americans, Colorado’s men claimed their third national crown in the past decade with a 149-169 victory over runner-up Northern Arizona. In his first NCAA Championships, Ben Saarel led the Buffaloes with an eighth-place overall finish, while sophomore Morgan Pearson (17th), senior Blake Theroux (23rd) and sophomore Pierce Murphy (39th) rounded out the team’s All-Americans.

The Buffaloes’ team score of 149 was the highest ever for a men’s Division I NCAA Champion cross country team.

Runner-up Northern Arizona placed three on the All-America list in fourth-place sophomore Futsum Zienasellassie, junior Matt McElroy (25th) and senior Brian Shrader (28th). Third-place Oklahoma State and fourth-place BYU each earned two All-America honors to round out the podium, as did 14th-place Texas and 18th-place Villanova.

In the women’s race, the Providence trio of senior Emily Sisson (seventh), senior Laura Nagel (27th) and sophomore Sarah Collins earned All-American honors for the second year in a row to lead the Friars to their first-ever NCAA women’s cross country title over Arizona, 141-197. Providence was the only women’s team in the nation with three All-America honorees.

Behind senior Elvin Kibet (15th) and junior Nicci Corbin (22nd), Arizona finished runner-up as one of five teams with two All-Americans. Tenth-place New Mexico, 11th-place Stanford, 13th-place Iowa State and 16th-place Dartmouth — led by individual champion Abbey D’Agostino — were the other teams with pairs of All-Americans.

By conference, the Pac-12 boasted seven All-Americans in both the men’s and women’s races to claim top honors for both genders. Individual champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon dethroned 2012 champion Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech in the men’s race in his first NCAA Championships to lead the conference, joined by Colorado’s nation-best four honorees, Stanford junior Jim Rosa (fifth) and Washington junior Aaron Nelson (20th).

The Big 12 was next in the men’s race with six honorees, and the Big Ten followed after that with four.

The Pac-12 posted four top-10 individuals in the women’s race, led by fourth-place Stanford junior Aisling Cuffe. Junior Shelby Houlihan of Arizona State (eighth), senior Shalaya Kipp of Colorado (ninth) and junior Kelsey Santisteban of California (10th) rounded out the top 10. Cuffe’s senior teammate Jessica Tonn was 16th to join Arizona’s pair as the other Pac-12 honorees.

Next in line with six All-Americans was the ACC, followed by the Big East with five, led by Providence’s trio. The Big 12 and Ivy League, headlined by D’Agostino’s title, both finished with four apiece.

In defending their national title from 2012, the 2013 NCAA Division II women’s champion Grand Valley State Lakers placed six individuals on the USTFCCCA All-America list — the most of any NCAA program this year regardless of division or gender — while the Adams State men, led by individual champion junior Tabor Stevens, earned five All-America nods en route to winning its fifth national title in the past six seasons.

Led by third-place junior Allyson Winchester, ninth-place sophomore Jessica Janecke and 11th-place freshman Kendra Foley, the Lakers posted a team score of 54 — the lowest by a women’s DII champion since Adams State posted the same score in 2005 –to Adams State’s 91. Rounding out the honorees for GVSU were senior Courtney Brewis (17th), junior Hannah Osborn (31st) and sophomore Jordan Chester (40th) The Lakers nearly put all seven runners on the All-America list, as their seventh crossed the line in 48th.

Runner-up Adams State was represented on the All-America list by four honorees. Third-place Western State, fourth-place Alaska Anchorage rounded out the podium with a pair of All-Americans each. Fifth-place Augustana (S.D.), seventh-place Simon Fraser, eighth-place Metro State, ninth-place Mansfield and 23rd-place Bentley also earned two All-America plaudits apiece.

Individual champ Tabor Stevens paced the Adams State men to the team title and five All-America selections as the Grizzlies took down Grand Valley State, 54-104. Senior Jovanny Godinez (10th), sophomore Kevin Batt (12th), sophomore Kyle Masterson (18th) and senior Naseem Haje (30th) also made the list of All-America honorees, with their sixth runner finished just outside the top-40 cutoff in 46th.

New Champions Emerge at XTERRA Trail Run Worlds KUALOA RANCH, Oahu, Hawaii (November 24, 2013) - Patrick Smyth (right) found his way in the sport of trail running, and Polina Babkina found her way at Kualoa Ranch. As a result, both ran away as the new champions of the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. More than 2,000 runners from 12 countries and 36 states participated in the event on an "Aloha from Hawaii" postcard-type of day at Kualoa Ranch. Smyth, who resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, was the overall winner, competing the 21-kilometer championship course in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 38 seconds. It was his first appearance at the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii, and it came just two months after he burst onto the trail running scene with a victory at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship in his home state of Utah. Babkina, who is originally from Russia but now resides in Honolulu, was the first overall female, with a time of 1:37:24. It was sweet redemption for Babkina, who was leading the race last year until she took a wrong turn and eventually finished third. Read the rest of the story on RunningUSA.org Brosseau Victorious at Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas LAS VEGAS - The finish of the men's race at the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon was the most exciting show in town on Sunday night, Nov. 17, as 28-year-old Jason Brosseau of Colorado Springs, Colo. (right), pulled away from Andrew Duncan of Las Vegas over the final mile to win the race in 2 hours 35 minutes and 26 seconds. The 46-year-old Duncan finished 10 seconds back to the raucous cheers of the large crowds assembled on Las Vegas Boulevard. "I'm a track runner. I knew the closer and closer we got to the finish, the more it was my race," Brosseau said afterward. "I had a kick and went for it with one mile to go." Yon Yilma, 25, of Edmonds, Wash., led most of the way, passing halfway in 1:13:29 and 20 miles in 1:55:45 before the wheels fell off. Brosseau and Duncan, who were running together at 20 miles (1:58:27) caught a fading Yilma at mile 23 and battled back and forth the rest of the way to the finish line. Michael Wardian, 39, of Arlington, Va., who won the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon on Sunday morning in 2:31:19, ran 2:57:56 to finish tenth in Las Vegas. Wardian, who hopped on a plane immediately after the San Antonio race, went through halfway in 1:18:23 before the day's tall task took its toll on his legs. Elite athletes representing five countries will toe the starting line including a half dozen current and former Olympians, 10 women with 5K personal bests under 15:30 (5-minutes per mile pace), and nine men with personal bests under 13:45 (4:26 per mile pace). Lightning fast times are expected in the elite races, bolstering the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot's reputation as a global standout that showcases top athletic talent. The Association of Road Race Statisticians ranked the elite men's race at the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot among the four most competitive road 5Ks in the world for the past three years. The elite women's race at the Turkey Trot was ranked as the ninth most competitive in the world in 2012. Find out who will be running on RunningUSA.org Newly Formed Collegiate Running Association to Include Trail and Mountain Running RICHMOND, Va . - Steve Taylor, cross country and track & field coach at the University of Richmond, had a vision. "About five years ago the idea came to mind that there was a need to create additional competitive and social opportunities for college students who enjoy running," said Taylor. "Given restrictions placed on college coaches with roster limits as well as the elimination of track & field programs at the college level, there was a need for action to increase opportunity. In January 2012, when the NCAA passed legislation that allowed NCAA DI athletes to accept prize money to cover actual and necessary expenses for participation in their individual sport over a full calendar year, I decided the timing was right and that we needed to make this happen." What happened was the formation of a new non profit, the Collegiate Running Association. Founded by Taylor along with Jon Molz, assistant women's track & field coach at the University of Richmond, the Association was introduced to the public on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. (Nov. 17, 2013) - Members of the AmeriKenyan Running Club dominated the top spots at the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay, held Sunday, Nov. 17. Jacob Chemtai, 26, nearly broke the course record with a blistering time of one hour, 2 minutes, 44 seconds. His teammate, Nelson Oyugi (pictured below), 21, finished just six seconds behind at 1:02:50. The top two female runners, Sarah Kiptoo, 24, and Everlyne Lagat, 32, Kenyans from the same running club, finished at 1:11:21 and 1:13:49. Both male and female times were the second-fastest ever in this race, now in its 11thyear. With more than 35 top elite runners competing, 2013 brought the deepest field of half marathoners ever assembled for this race and the fastest overall course competition. A total of nine male runners finished under 1:05 this year after a total of only 13 runners breaking 1:05 in the past six years combined. A prize purse of $17,850, the largest half marathon purse in the western U.S., was distributed between the top eight male and female and top three masters' runners. Overall, 7,200 runners crossed the finish line under perfect race conditions. A thin cloud cover, windless skies and temperatures in the low-50's at the start helped hundreds run personal records along the rolling course that mostly tours the scenic and historic coastlines of Monterey and Pacific Grove. In the elite competition, the first mile of the race saw a pack of 14 runners take the lead, including Kiptoo, a very fast woman among the elite men. They reached the one mile mark in 4:53 with last year's champion Ben Bruce in front. At mile two, a five-man pack emerged including Uyogi and Chemtai, fellow Kenyans Geofrey Terer and Benson Cheruiyot, and Californian Fernando Cabada.
