Johnny Gray's USATF Hall Of Fame Induction Speech

by Johnny Gray; 2008 USATF Hall of Fame inductee

I like to start by giving thanks to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ for what he has done to make my life worth living. If not for his sacrifice, my life as well as many of yours would be hopeless. Jesus defiantly took a Stand for all man kind……… 2008 is a special year for me in more ways then one; I became a Grandfather of a healthy little boy, Calib Vincent Gray. I also received my first Head coaching Cross Country job, and our team became the first in school history to make it to State. And I stand here before you today as a Hall of Fame Inductee, it’s truly a year of change; Our President elect Barack Obama exemplifies for many of us what can be accomplished when you stand for something and believe, and work hard for it.

I ask myself, what is it about myself, as a man, do I stand for? It’s a saying that a man who stands for nothing will fall for anything. Ask yourselves what is it in life you stand for?

• I like to give recognition to a few people who have taken a stand in my life. I like to thank Sharrieffa Barksdale, because it was she, who suggested I put my name on the hall of fame ballot. If not for her, I may not be standing here this evening. Sharireffa, I thank you for taking that stand …

• I also thank my beautiful wife for the stand she took in raising our three loving sons, and dealing with the inconveniences that track & field as well as, I myself has placed upon her throughout more than two decades, that it has taken for me to complete my track & field journey. Judy Thank you for taking a stand…

• I look back on my life, as well as my track & field career, and, thank you is not enough, when it comes to what my Mother has done for me. My mother not only took a stand when she raised three boys as a single parent. She also exemplified, what character, morals and values are, when she sacrificed two years of her life, to take care of her brother whom passed away a few months back. I thank you, and love you Mom, for you truly took a stand… Without you there’s no me.

• I like to thank a very special person whom without this individual, my career would not have been what it has. This individual not only has the patience of Joeb, but a heart of gold. If you will please, could you stand and give a hand to my coach Merell McGee because he truly took a stand…

Thank you for the acknowledgement of my coach, because this truly is his night as well as it is mine. I met my coach back in 1977 as he sat in the bleachers at Crenshaw High school. And it was that day my track career was born. I was committed to the sport of track & field, and my coach was committed to me, and I appreciate you for your loyalty coach. Even today I address him as coach, out of respect for him as a man as well as my coach. I think my respect for him played and important role in his commitment to me as and athlete. I like to tell you all a story, I don’t know if coach remembers this day, but it was after a race in which I lost to this particular athlete whom I knew was using steroids. I was so mad I lost that day, I was just fussing and carrying on, and I mentioned to coach; I should take steroids, because there doing it and getting away with it, so why don’t I? Coach said to me, Look you’re running 1:42 – 1:43 without the use of steroids and they need steroids just to run with you, so you think you need steroids? “That got me to thinking” God allows us to do plenty to protect us from ourselves.” I knew that taking steroids wasn’t right, what coach taught me on that day, was to take a stand for what I believe in. Because by taking a stand, I could one day make a difference in the lives of those who believe in hard work and commitment. See, proper preparation prevents poor performances not steroids. And it’s up to us to know when to take advantage of our blessings. If you know better then you’re expected to do better. When it comes to the use of steroids most athletes take them for lack of faith in their own ability, or for the love money. If you have no faith in self, then you might try anything. We all know that the love of money is the root to all evil. The tricky thing about the love of money is it often brings out the worst in people. I truly believe that it’s because of the love of money we have the problem with steroids in sports today. Every athlete knows that the use of steroids is against the rules, so that alone makes it cheating. When you cheat it makes all your accomplishments hopeless, and with hope comes joy, and you can only truly experience that joy through your hard work and commitment. The cheating in sports today I compare to a couple of Boy Scout troops that’s told, to go out in the woods to gather dry twigs and grass to make a fire for a marshmallow roast. See, you have one troop that follows the rules, and work hard by rubbing the dry sticks together along with the dry grass until they have a fire. Then there’s the other troop that cheats and bring a book matches, see both troops have there roast, but which troop really enjoyed it the most? Your actions reflect your Character, and Character is who you are when know ones watching; The reason most people fail instead of succeed, is that they trade what they want most, for what they want at the moment. When it comes to success, some people dream of it, while others wake up and work hard for it. I know there’s been many to stand where I stand this evening, as a Hall Of fame Inductee. And I can only imagine, if they took this stand as a cheater, the hopelessness they must have felt in not knowing; not knowing weather or not they could have accomplished this feat, by choosing to trust in their God given talent thru hard work over cheating.

Well I stand here today, as that Scout troop that went out and gathered those dry twigs and grass for my fire, proud of what I accomplished through the hard work, dedication and commitment that earned me this induction. And I can truly say that I was true to the sport of track & field, true to my coach, my competitors, fans and you the voters. I want you all to know tonight that it feels great, to know what truly can be accomplished when you work hard for something. See, the only place you’re ever going to fine success before work is in the dictionary. Today I take a stand by showing my appreciation, and I accept this honor from bottom of my heart. I’m proud to be a member of this 2008 Track & Field Hall Of Fame class. 2008 is truly a great year!

Thank you and God Bless……….

USATF Junior Olympic titles up for grabs Saturday

USA Track & Field's premiere youth cross country meet, the 2008 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, will crown individual and team champions this Saturday at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va.

Featuring more than 3,000 age-group youth athletes from around the country, the Junior Olympics will be contested over the challenging landscape of Pole Green Park, which consists of a 232-acre area in Hanover County. With rolling terrain and a challenging hill, Pole Green Park has proven to be an outstanding site for Virginia cross country meets.

Athletes aged 8 to 18 will compete for boys' and girls' titles in five age divisions. The USATF Junior Olympic program age divisions are bantam (10 and under) racing over 3 kilometers; midget (11-12) racing 3 km; youth (13-14) racing 4 km; intermediate (15-16) racing 5 km; and young men/women (17-18) racing 5 km.

Individual boys' winners from the 2007 Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Lawrence, Kan., were Marcus Garrow in bantam, 10:59.07; Colin Kerr in midget, 10:27.46; Lukas Verzbicas (Illinois) in youth, 13:16.04; Eric Fitzpatrick (Team Idaho) in intermediate, 16:26.09; and Patrick Casey (Bozeman Track Club) in young men, 15:59.73. Team champions were Equalizers Team A in bantam, youth and intermediate, Pops Track Club in midget, and Team Provo in young men. It was the second team title in a row for the Equalizers youth team.

Last year's girls winners included 2006 bantam champion Paige Rice of Oregon, CC who dominated the field in the midget girls 3 km race cruising to victory in 10 minutes 58.57 seconds. Other individual winners for girls included Hanna Blache (Corona Pan) in bantam, 11:46.62; Eleanor Fulton (Zoom Track Club) in youth, 14:55.43; Elizabeth Briascoe (Awesome Power) in intermediate, 18:34.38; and Emily Reese (Northside) in young women, 19:04.66.

Olympic stars set for Reebok Boston Indoor Games

Beijing medalists Jenn Stuczynski, Steve Hooker and Nick Willis will be among the headliners at the 2009 Reebok Boston Indoor Games on February 7 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. The second event of USA Track & Field's 2009 Indoor Visa Championship Series, tickets for the Reebok Boston Indoor Games are on sale now at www.BostonIndoorGames.com or by calling 1-877-TIX-TRAC.

Stuczynski, who won the Olympic silver medal in the women's pole vault last year in Beijing, is also the 2008 World Indoor Championships silver medalist and outdoor American recordholder. She is the #2 vaulter of all-time, a six-time U.S. champion, the reigning Olympic Trials champion and the defending Reebok Boston Indoor Games champion.

Hooker was victorious in one of the most exciting contests of the 2008 Olympics, winning the men's pole vault on his third and last attempt after repeatedly bouncing back from the brink of elimination. After securing the gold medal, the Australian went on to break the Olympic Record. This will be Hooker's second appearance at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, following a win in 2007.

Willis became the first New Zealand track athlete in 32 years to bring home an Olympic medal when he won the 1,500-meter bronze medal in Beijing. The 2006 Commonwealth Games champion and national record-holder at 1,500 meters, Willis also broke the New Zealand indoor mark and NCAA record for 3,000 meters here in 2004 while competing for the University of Michigan.

Since the Reebok Boston Indoor Games began in 1996, more than 100 Olympic and World Championship medalists have competed in the event, which has also played host to six world records and nine American records. More athletes for the 2009 event will be announced soon.

The 14th-annual Reebok Boston Indoor Games begins at 5:30 p.m. on February 7 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College, 1350 Tremont St. Information is now available on-line at www.BostonIndoorGames.com, and tickets are available on-line or by calling 1-877-TIX-TRAC. McMillan Elite takes men's team title; Boulder Running Co./adidas wins women's title at USATF National Club Cross Country Championships

SPOKANE - McMillan Elite and Boulder Running Company/adidas easily took the respective men's and women's titles Saturday at the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships at Plantes Ferry Recreation Park in Spokane, Wash.

Saturday's races were held under windy and blustery conditions, with a light dusting of snow that accumulated the night before. Temperatures were in the high 20s with the wind chill making it feel at least 10 degrees colder for the 900+ participants representing America's top post-collegiate club teams vying for top honors and bragging rights as the nation's top cross country team.

As the afternoon progressed, the wind picked up dramatically, and the temperature dropped to the mid-teens by the conclusion of the open men's 10-kilometer race.

Two-time NCAA Division II cross country champion Scott Bauhs, representing Transports adidas Racing Team eased his way into the lead in the open men's ten kilometer race, then held off a late challenge by Andrew Carlson of McMillan Elite to win his first national championship as a professional, clocking 30:47 to Carlson's 30:49.

Bauhs, an Olympic Trials qualifier this year at 10000 meters, and a member of this year's world cross country championships squad, took the lead shortly after the mile mark, while hotly pursued by several members of the winning McMillan Elite squad.

As the wind gusted up to speeds hovering around 30 miles per hour at times during the race, Bauhs began to extend his command over the rest of the field, except for Carlson, who hung on gamely to Bauhs through the final lap.

Carlson's runner-up finish, combined with Brett Gotcher and Gilliat Gebray's 4-5 finish led McMillan Elite to their first national title, as the Flagstaff-based squad scored 47 points, defeating the Bowerman Athletic Club by 17 points. Four-time men's team champions Hansons-Brooks finished third with 107 points.

In what can be best described as a race of attrition, Rebecca Donaghue survived the heavy winds and the early challenge of a group of four runners, including Toni Salucci, Kara June, Alisha Williams, and Jennifer Donovan to win the national title in a time of 21:38. The five women were the only ones to break 22 minutes for the 6-kilometer course.

Despite Donaghue's overall win, last year's third place team Boulder Running Company/adidas dominated the team competition with 69 points, defeating the women of New Balance Boston by 31 points. Three-time team champions Boston Athletic Association took third with 128 points.

In the day's opening race, Carmen Ayala-Troncoso of Austin, Texas, representing Rogue Running, won yet another masters championship, after taking an early lead over former Team USA cross country team member Liz Wilson of the Eastside Runners, extending the lead over the final lap.

Wilson won the individual age-group title in the 40-44 division. Other age-group winners included Regina Joyce (50-54); Suzanne Ray (55-59); and, Patty Foltz (60-64).

Team champions included Club Northwest (40-49) and the Impala Racing Team (50-59).

Simon Gutierrez of Alamosa, Colorado used a strong surge on the final lap of the race to break away from runner-up Dan Franek of the Dirigo RC to win his first national cross country title, running 33:50.

Gutierrez and 2006 champion Tracy Lokken were part of the lead group that broke away early from a chase pack that included the Fluffy Bunny TC trio of David Schumacher, last year's national champion Peter Magill, and Christian Cushing-Murray.

Other individual age-group titles went to Magill (45-49); Bob Winn (50-54); Mark Billett (55-59); Terry Delph (60-64); Doug Goodhue (65-69); Thom Weddle (70-74); and Mel Preedy (75-79).

Team titles were won by the Fluffy Bunny TC (40-49); Club Northwest (50-59); Boulder Road Runners (60-69); and the Snohomish TC (70+).

Clubs competed for a total prize purse of $24,000, with $19,000 going to the top open teams.

RACE QUOTES:

Scott Bauhs: I ran in snow at the NCAA D-II meet a few weeks ago, but this was worse.

I wanted to get out reasonably hard, then take the lead and go from there. I thought that I could hold off Andrew Carlson (on the final stretch). I wasn't completely confident with the conditions, but I felt that I could hold him off at the end.

Rebecca Donaghue: Truthfully, these were the worst conditions I've ever run in. I can't feel my face; I can't feel my fingers. The wind blew me over at about a mile and a half. I drafted off of other people, as the wind was absolutely brutal.

I ran in the NCAA cross country championships a few years ago where it was this cold, but never that windy. This is real cross country weather.

Carmen Ayala-Troncoso: I knew I was in great shape going into today. Liz Wilson and I have raced against each other for a long time, and she just move up into the masters category, so I'm going to have to train harder to keep up with her.

I originally planned to wear half tights, but when I got here and felt the wind, I decided to change my mind and wear as much stuff as I can and feel comfortable, even if that were the difference between losing seconds during the race. The footing wasn't bad; it was the wind.

Simon Gutierrez: I thought I would make a hard push in the fifth mile. I threw a couple of surges in the middle of the race to see how everyone else was feeling. People warned me not to let guys like (former champions) Tracy Lokken and Peter Magill near me towards the end because they're such good kickers.

I live in Alamosa, Colorado, and so the conditions were not that bad. The cold didn't bother me, and I was used to the hard surface.

Alex Mack Wins Draddy Trophy as Football's Top Scholar-Athlete

Alex Mack Wins Draddy Trophy as Football's Top Scholar-Athlete
Cal's Senior Center Accepts Honor at Ceremony in New York

Dec. 9, 2008

California senior center Alex Mack was named winner of the 2008 Draddy Trophy as the nation's top football scholar-athlete during a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York Tuesday night.

The Draddy Trophy, also referred to as the "Academic Heisman," is one of college football's most sought-after and competitive awards, recognizing an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and community leadership. The award comes with a 24-inch, 25-pound bronze trophy and a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship. A total of $277,000 was awarded to Mack and the other 14 Draddy Trophy finalists at the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's Annual Awards Dinner.

"I'm just very thankful to the National Football Foundation for this honor," Mack said, "and I am grateful for schools such as California for allowing us to excel. The university gave me the opportunity to excel on the field and in the classroom as well as offering time for community service."

Head coach Jeff Tedford and Alex Mack with the 2008 Draddy Trophy

"We are extremely proud to award this year's Draddy Trophy to Alex," said NFF Chairman Archie Manning, whose son Peyton claimed the 1997 Draddy Trophy. "He represents the best of the best in collegiate academics and athletics and epitomizes the leadership qualities learned playing our great sport."

Having already graduated with a 3.61 GPA and a bachelor's degree in legal studies, the 2008 Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for football is a four-time Academic All-Pac-10 selection currently pursuing a master's in education. In an article by Eric Gilmore of CalBears.com, several of Mack's teammates concurred that it has come to be expected to see Mack "walking around with a book all the time," and acknowledge that Mack "puts in the time to succeed" when it comes to school and football.

Equally impressive, the projected first round NFL Draft pick is a three-time first-team All-Pac-10 pick. Also a finalist for the 2008 Rimington Trophy presented to the top center in college football, Mack won the 2007 Morris Trophy last year as the conference's top offensive lineman.

A member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Mack was the literal poster boy for Cal's "Dancing with the Stars" fundraising event, which raised money for underprivileged children in the San Francisco area. He was selected as a summer guest columnist for the Sporting New Today and has participated in an after-school program with local elementary schools.

Mack follows Je'Rod Cherry (1995) and Donald Pat Newell (1959) as NFF National Scholar-Athletes for the Golden Bears.

Launched in 1959, the NFF scholar-athlete program became the first initiative in history to credit a player for both academic and athletic accomplishments. The centerpiece to the NFF's scholar-athlete program, which has awarded $8.9 million to 708 top athletes, the Draddy Trophy, first awarded in 1990, honors Manhattan College quarterback and former NFF Chairman Vincent dePaul Draddy.

"The NFF mission is to build leaders through football, and the 2008 NFF National Scholar-Athlete class members stand as a testament to that creed," said NFF President & CEO Steven J. Hatchell. "We look forward to supporting the bright futures of each of these fine young men, and we take great pride in holding them out as examples of football's unique ability to build tomorrow's leaders."

Candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

Past Draddy winners, including two Rhodes Scholars, a Rhodes Scholar finalist, a Heisman winner and a 3.7 average GPA, are: Chris Howard (Air Force, 1990 - Leader in Higher Education); John B. Brown remembered with Rico Lifetime Achievement Award

RENO, Nev. - Known worldwide as a pioneer in sports science and medicine, Dr. C. Harmon Brown, was posthumously named the recipient of the Heliodoro and Patricia Rico Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2008 USA Track & Field Annual Meeting at the Silver Legacy Resort in Reno, Nev.

Formerly known as USATF's Pacesetter Award, the award acknowledges an individual's long-term impact on and contribution to the sport of track and field in the United States. The name change was instituted by USATF President Bill Roe and CEO Craig Masback in June, 2006.

A well-respected author, coach, professor, speaker, endocrinologist, team administrator and track meet official, Dr. Brown, a resident of San Mateo, Calif., served the sport of track and field in countless ways. He died on November 11, 2008 at the age of 78,

A school record-holding hurdler in his younger days, Brown earned his M.D. from the George Washington School of Medicine in 1956. While pursuing his career in medicine in California, he coached in club, high school, collegiate, national and international levels. During his coaching career he mentored numerous All-Americans and three Olympic throwers. He served on coaching staffs with nine Team USA international teams from 1967-1986, including two Olympic and two Pan-American teams.

When he began coaching in 1962, women were not permitted to participate in collegiate competitions. Brown became a tireless advocate on behalf of women athletes and conducted pioneering research on the effects of strenuous exercise on the female body to demonstrate women's physiologic and performance capabilities.

Brown served TAC/USATF as chair of the organization's Sports Science and Medical Committee for two decades, where he was instrumental in developing USATF's innovative drug testing initiatives. The past few years he served as USATF's High Performance Sports Science Chair. Brown was also one of the co-architects of USATF's High Performance Programs philosophy of track and field being an athlete-centered, coach-driven and science-based sport.

Brown was a member of the IAAF Medical and Anti-Doping Commission, and in the early 1980s he helped to initiate and then chair the IAAF Medical Education Working Group, a forerunner to the current Medical and Anti-Doping Commission. In all, Brown's contribution to the IAAF's medical and anti-doping program consisted of 24 years of devoted service, a period which also involved many appointments as Medical Delegate to IAAF championships.

A contributing author to the USA Track & Field Coaching Manual, Brown was a well respected author. He served as the editor and co-author of the IAAF Medical Manual for Athletics and Road Running Competitions: A Practical Guide, a publication which is now in its third edition.
