SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Sarah Sumpter placed second among 156 finishers in the women's 5-kilometer race while sophomore Brandon Pugh took seventh in the 134-runner field in the men's 8K, leading their respective UC Davis teams at the Sacramento State Inter-Regional Jamboree held at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.

The Aggie women finished third as a team with 88 points, behind only UCLA (77) and Cal Poly (78). The UC Davis men placed fourth at 111 points, just ahead of Cal's 123. UCLA and Cal Poly also took the top two team places on the men's side with scores of 54 and 67 respectively.

Sumpter held off a late charge by UCLA junior Kelsey Smith near the finish chute to cross in 16 minutes, 36 seconds. Katie Fry and Anna Welch were the next Aggies through in 12th (17:11) and 15th (17:16), respectively. Senior Shannon Harcus finished among the next pack in 28th overall with freshman Hannah Kirkegaard close behind in 31st, rounding out the UC Davis team scoring. Sophomores Erika Barr (50th) and Christine Hoffman (56th) were the Aggies' displacing finishers.

Pugh was the lone UC Davis runner in the front pack during the final stretch, crossing in 23:48 just behind Sac State's Reesey Byers and just ahead of Long Beach State's Chris Enriquez for seventh. Junior Trevor Halsted came through with the next group at 24:09 for 19th place, then junior Will Melton finished 27th in 24:33. Sophomore Jordon Rushing and senior Grayson Hough finished neck-and-neck in 30th and 31st place with times of 24:42. Sophomores Nick Ratto and Cody Nguyen posted the displacing finishes of 39th and 75th for UC Davis.

"Going in we talked about wanting to get a measure of where both teams were fitness-wise, and then jelling and meshing and seeing how we work together in a competitive context without forgetting that we were racing other teams," said UC Davis head coach Drew Wartenburg. "It has been a while since we have engaged in a competitive context. We came out and we had race plans. We talked about taking some risks today and trying some new things. We definitely found out a lot about where both groups stand, and we go away with some things to work on."

The Inter-Regional Jamboree serves as a preview for the NCAA West Regional, held at the same course and featuring many of the same teams as the Nov. 15 event.

UC Davis returns to action in a split-squad weekend on Oct. 19, competing at the Santa Clara Invitational, the Pre-National meet at Indiana State and the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational.
