NEW ORLEANS — Adams State continued to make its astounding climb towards the top of the NCAA Division II Men’s Computer Team Rankings, released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday, as the Grizzlies found themselves in 3rd for the first time since the 2015 campaign. Chico State held onto the top spot for the 5th-straight week, while Ashland crept back into 2nd place after slipping to 3rd a week ago. Tiffin held things down at 4th once again, while Saint Augustine’s jumped to 5th for its highest ranking this year.

But no team in the top-5 has had as meteoric of a rise as Adams State. Coming in at 52nd during the 2nd week of rankings, the Grizzlies have since moved from 8th to 5th to 3rd.
This week, the program’s leap can be attributed to a pair of distance runners who shined bright at the Mt. SAC Relays. Sydney Gidabuday and Kale Adams each recorded NCAA Division II leading marks in their races over the weekend. Gidabuday posted a time of 13:39.94 in the 5000 meters, placing 4th behind 3 NCAA Division I athletes. Adams’ time of 8:49.70 in the steeplechase was good enough for an NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying mark.
Ashland returned to the spot it held for all but one week so far this year after a slew of strong performances at the Akron-Northeast Ohio Quad meet. Bryn Campbell led the individuals with a hammer throw mark of 65.38m (214-6) that ranks 3rd in the nation (behind his two teammates, Daniel Roberts and Jordan Crayon). Additionally, the Eagles 4×100 relay team put together the 11th-best time on the season at 40.71.
Saint Augustine’s moved up 2 spots after 3 athletes recorded top-6 marks in their respective events in NCAA Division II this year at the Aggie Invitational over the weekend. Omar Johnson and Khari Herbert Jr. ran times of 46.82 (2nd) and 46.87 (3rd) in the 400 meters, respectively, to earn top-5 marks, while Jumonne Exeter’s 15.47m (50-9¼) triple jump leap sits 6th in the nation.
Lincoln (Mo.) found itself in the top-10 for the 1st time since the end of the 2014 campaign, as the Blue Tigers climbed 12 spots to 6th this week. Faedian Royes (20.85), Stephen Rose (20.93) and Miguel Barton (20.97) wrecked the 200 meter descending order list at the WJC Darrel Gourley Open, posting the 3rd, 5th and 6th-best times, respectively, in NCAA Division II this year. Roberto Smith (10.35) and Jakiel David (10.42) also had strong outings in the 100 meters, as they recorded the 4th and 10th-best times in the nation, respectively. Grand Valley State (7th) also made a significant jump into the top-10 after sitting 13th a week ago. Missouri Southern (9th) joined them as new faces in the top-10 this week. Angelo State dipped to 8th after peaking at 2nd a week ago, while Texas A&M-Commerce (10th) rounded out the top-10. Shorter (6th to 11th) and West Texas A&M (9th to 16th) both fell out of the top-10 on the week. Southern Indiana made its season debut in the top-25 this week, coming in at 22nd. The Eagles jumped 20 spots after Bastian Grau ran a 3:45.14 in the 1500 meters at the Bryan Clay Invite – good for 2nd on the descending order list – while Chase Broughton’s time of 8:57.02 at the Mt. SAC Relays in the steeplechase comes in at 9th in the nation.
The 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 25-27. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org each week throughout the season for updated rankings.
