Title: Head Track & Field and Cross Country Coach

Before his arrival at College of San Mateo, Layten served as an assistant coach for the cross country and distance track team for three years at San Jose State University. There, he helped in the resurrection of the track program in San Jose, assisting the men’s distance program in becoming a top-15 team in the West Region for cross country and achieving the highest Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championship finish in school history on the men’s and women’s side. Layten helped the Spartans produce their first qualifiers for Division I NCAA’s (regionals), including Jennifer Beckingham in the 800m and 1500m. Layten also helped coach Craig Huff, who finished 5th at the United States Junior National Championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 2015.
He is a USATF Level 2 Certified Coach in the endurance events and USTFCCCA Certified Coach in the jumping events as well as strength and conditioning. Layten holds a Master’s degree in kinesiology at San Jose State, and a Bachelor’s degree in political science from California Polytechnic State University.
