NEW ORLEANS — One look at the results of the past seven years at the NCAA Division I Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships reveals the fact that Oregon has been simply dominant. The Ducks have won six of the past seven team titles with their lone loss coming in 2015 when they finished runner-up to Arkansas.

The Ducks are No. 1 in the preseason rankings for the first time since 2012. This is the third time in program history that Oregon is No. 1 in the preseason (2011 and 2012).
Following the Ducks in the rankings is No. 2 Arkansas, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Southern California and No. 5 Texas.

The closer an athlete is to the top of his or her event rankings, the more points he or she earns toward the team total. Points from all applicable athletes are added up to determine team scores.
The point system used in the rankings is not the same as the scoring system used for the NCAA Championships.
Oregon is No. 1 because of a healthy number of big point scorers. Leading the way for the Ducks is Hannah Cunliffe and Raevyn Rogers. Cunliffe is ranked 1st and 2nd in the 200 and 60 respectively, while Rogers is the two-time defending national champ in the 800. Don’t forget about the duo of Deajah Stevens or Ariana Washington either and Sasha Wallace and Alaysha Johnson provide a solid 1-2 punch in the 60 hurdles.
Arkansas will once again be led by a strong contingent in the combined events and field events. Taliyah Brooks and Payton Stumbaugh are ranked 2nd and 5th in the USTFCCCA Individual Rankings when it comes to the pentathlon and Lexi Weeks and her sister Victoria are 1-2 in the pole vault (Lexi swept the NCAA pole vault titles last year).
Georgia saw Tatiana Gusin post a NCAA-leading mark of 1.90m (6-2¾) in the high jump this past weekend and that pairs well with the horizontal jump duo of Keturah Orji (triple jump champ) and Iowa State transfer Kate Hall (No. 3 in the USTFCCCA Individual Rankings in the long jump). Two-time champ and current collegiate record holder Kendell Williams is a perennial threat in the pentathlon.
Southern California landed an impact transfer in Brittany Mann this offseason. Mann previously competed at Oregon and is ranked No. 3 in the shot put and No. 6 in the weight throw according to the USTFCCCA Individual Rankings. Amalie Iuel is strong in the pentathlon (ranked No. 3) and Deanna Hill showed signs of breaking out last year as a sophomore and is hoping to do even better as a junior.
Texas won’t have the luxury of trotting The Bowerman Award winner Courtney Okolo out in the 400 or 4×400 relay, but Chrisann Gordon showed her wheels last year and is ranked No. 3 in the USTFCCCA Individual Rankings in the 400. Teahna Daniels is the defending NCAA champ at 60 meters and is ranked No. 1 — and justifiably so.
No. 6 Florida, No. 7 LSU, No. 8 Kentucky, No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 10 Purdue round out the top-10. This is the highest preseason ranking for the Irish in program history and is led by Molly Seidel. The Boilermakers, paced by Devynne Chartlon and Brionna Thomas, has their highest ranking in program history at any point.
In just about two months we’ll see these teams duke it out at the 2017 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in College Station, Texas.
