Watson & De Beer Shine; ASU Tops Cats in Duel of the Desert
TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona hosted their rival Sun Devils today for the annual Arizona-ASU Duel in the Desert. ASU won the women’s meet by a score of 105-92 and the men’s meet by a score of 110-87.
“This is the time where we have to be at our very best.” Head Coach Fred Harvey said. “If you’re trying to put it all together right now with multis and the Pac-12 Championships coming up, it is going to be a lot more difficult.”
“I am really fired up with where we are at right now. We are healthy, for the most part we are making good decisions as a staff and as a team.”
Sage Watson ran the ninth best collegiate time this year in the 400-meter race with a personal record at 52.01 seconds. That mark is currently the ninth best in the country.
“I feel good. I was happy to run my third personal best of the year.” Sage Watson said. “This is just gearing me up for a better time in the hurdles and I think that this was a great competition leading up to the Pac-12 Championships.”
Gerhard De Beer had a huge personal record in the discus at 198 ft. - 7 in. (60.52m) for first place. That mark is currently ninth-best in the country.
Gia Trevisan also competed in the 400-meter race and had a stellar personal record at 53.28 seconds. Jasper Gray took third at 54.34 seconds, her second-best outdoor mark to date.
Miles Parish took first in the 400-meter race at 46.84 seconds. Bryce Houston took second at 47.42 seconds.
Nnenya Hailey had another great mark in the 100-meter hurdle race at 13.06 seconds for a first place finish. Traci Hicks finished second at 13.57 seconds.
Hicks also set a personal record in the long jump at 19 ft. - 10.75 in. (6.06m) for second place.
In the 200-meter race Gia Trevisan took second with another great personal record at 24.03 seconds. Jasper Gray took fourth at 24.30 seconds.
Blake Eicher competed in the 200-meter race for the men and took second place at 21.40 seconds.
Claire Green took first in the 1,500-meter race at 4:25.22, Hanna Peterson took fourth at 4:36.36, and Kate Penney took fifth at 4:38.74.
Morgan Struble came in first place in the 400-meter hurdles at 59.50 seconds. Tiana Bonds took second place at 62.05 seconds.
Collins Kibet took first in the 1,500-meter race at 3:48.90, Sam Willis took second at 3:50.22. Kibet also competed in the 800-meter race where he also took first place at 1:49.80.
Savaughn Christman ran a personal record in the 100-meter race at 11.91 seconds for third place.
Bailey Roth took second in the men’s steeplechase at 9:14.26.
Katelin Warren set a personal record in the 800-meter race at 2:09.46 for first place. Lizzie Smith took second place with a personal record at 2:09.95.
Addi Zerrenner ran a personal record in the 3,000-meter at 9:51.25 for second place.
Aaron Castle took first in the shot put with a mark of 61 ft. - 0.25 in. (18.60m).
Lisanne Hagens placed first in the high jump at 5 ft. - 7 in. (1.70m). Tiana Bonds set a personal record at 5 ft. - 5 in. (1.65m) for second place.
Pau Tonnesen took second in the long jump at 24 ft. - 2.25 in (7.37m). Harry Zimmerman took fourth at 19 ft. - 11 in. (6.07m).
Clay Cashman set his fifth personal record of the season in the hammer throw at 181 ft. - 11 in. (55.45m). Cody Dalton took third at 164 ft. - 6 in. (50.14m).
Amarissa Hawker took third in the shot put at 45 ft. - 0.25 in. (13.72m).
Arizona’s men 4x100-meter relay team took second at 40.58 seconds headed by Isaac Hing, Blake Eichler, Bryce Houston, and Harry Zimmerman.
The women’s 4x100-meter relay team took first at 45.14 seconds headed by Traci Hicks, Jasper Gray, Gia Trevisan, and Savaughn Christman.
Arizona had two women’s squads compete in the 4x400-meter relay. The first team, made up of Trevisan, Hailey, Gray, and Watson took first at 3:35.82. The second squad of Warren, Thompson, Struble and Bonds took second place at 3:46.02.
The men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Houston, Eichler, Demby and Parish took place with a time of 3:08.03.
Next up for the Cats will be the Pac-12 Multis Championships in Seattle, Washington. Pau Tonnesen will look to repeat as the Pac-12 decathlon champion.
