Jim Ryun smiling in Los Angeles Coliseum in 1966

CANDID COOL...a week after the 3:51.3 in Berkeley (7-17-66), the 19 year old Kansan headed south to the L.A. Coliseum where he scratched out a leisurely 1:46.2 victory at 880 yards (his world record at the time was 1:44.9y Terra Haute 6/10/1966)...this post-race photo was labeled "Momentarily mortal, Ryun sits in Coliseum and grins beneath a silly hat"...I LOVE it!

Tom Lux Greatest miler EVER!

Larry Grecian He was just a kid with the weight of the world on his slim shoulders.

Larry Grecian Was this a Rich Clarkson photo?

Dean Matthews Humble and innocent. The love of running. Look at those massive crowds. Did Jim know they came to see him?
