AMES, Iowa – The visions of the future of Iowa State track and field were on display Saturday afternoon at the Iowa State Classic. Fans at the Harry Hoak Track saw many young Cyclone student-athletes put up strong performances, and also saw an all-time collegiate record around the meet.
Iowa State Classic
Jasmine Staebler has already shown glimpses of her tremendous potential, and added to that on Saturday with her performance in the 800-meter run. Running in section two, Staebler minded her own business among the middle of the pack until 200 meters to go, when she made a big move to the outside and used the momentum around the corner to win the heat in 2:06.14. The time moves her into fifth all-time at Iowa State in the indoor half-mile.
Against a strong field in the men’s mile, Brian Llamas held his own, taking sixth place in a personal best of 4:01.43. The run moves him up to ninth on Iowa State’s all-time list for the mile. Brandon Wheat improved on his personal best in the 800-meter run from a few weeks ago, going under 1:50 for the first time in his career with a 1:49.86.

The Iowa State men's distance squad had a great weekend across the board. All of ISU's men's competitors from 800 meters and longer recorded personal bests in their events.
The Cyclones closed out the meet out in style with the 4x400-meter relay team of Jacob Hoogensen, Deon Sanders, Trever Ryen and Derek Jones winning their heat in 3:13.62.
Fans were witnesses to an collegiate record Saturday afternoon, as Ole Miss shot putter Raven Saunders recorded the collegiate level’s all-time furthest throw in the indoor shot put, tossing it 63-1 (19.23m). The previous record was held by Oklahoma’s Tia Brooks at 63-0 3/4 (19.22m).
Tyson Invitational
A couple of Cyclones recorded strong performances on Saturday afternoon. In the men’s shot put, Jan Jeuschede started to regain form, finishing in third place with a season-best toss of 61-9 3/4.
Jhoanmy Luque has made her way to second on Iowa State’s all-time performers list for the indoor triple jump. She just missed out on her career-best mark of 42-2 3/4 she set two weeks ago, recording a 42-1 1/4 to finish eighth in the invitational women’s triple jump.
In the women’s shot put, Christina Hillman took third place with a best toss of 56-5 1/4.
Up Next
Iowa State will be in action next weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. Events will take place next Saturday, Feb. 20.
