AMES, Iowa – Day one of the 25th annual Iowa State Classic was a fantastic day for the Cyclones and the competitors at the Lied Recreation Center. Iowa State’s distance squad had many great performances to take away from the weekend, while the meet itself featured a couple of meet and facility records and a pair of No. 1 times in the NCAA in 2016.
Iowa State Classic
In the men’s 5,000-meter run, Daniel Everett showed his immense talent against one of the top fields in the country, which produced the five-fastest times in the NCAA this season. Everett, a graduate transfer from Columbia University, Everett held his own against the high-level competition, taking sixth place in 13:44.90. His time ranks him third in ISU history in the event, with only ISU legends Jonah Koech and Jon Brown having gone faster before.
The women’s 5K did not disappoint either, as Erin Hooker lowered her indoor 5,000-meter personal best by 12 seconds with a 16:12.96, good for ninth place. Freshman Anne Frisbie also impressed in her first collegiate 5,000, taking 18th in 16:29.46.
In Iowa State’s final event of the day, Nathan Rodriguez closed with a big finish in his section of the men’s 3,000-meter run to take third in 8:04.20, moving him into ISU’s all-time top-10 for the event in ninth. Toby Hardwick (8:08.87) and Dan Curts (8:09.98) also impressed for the Cyclones.
Iowa State freshman Emma Whigham continues to make nice progress early in her ISU career, as she recorded an indoor personal best of 24.82 in the 200-meter dash. The time moves Whigham up to sixth in ISU history for the event.
In other action around the ISU Classic, Virginia Tech’s Thomas Curtin set the ISU Classic and Lied Recreation Center record in the men’s 5,000-meter run with an NCAA-best 13:37.10. The men’s 3,000-meter run saw Syracuse’s Justyn Knight do the same treble: breaking records and taking the NCAA lead in the event in 7:48.71. In the men’s weight throw, three-time U.S. Olympian AG Kruger III, a Sheldon, Iowa native, put up the second-furthest weight throw of 2016 in the world with a toss of 77-7 1/4.
Tyson Invitational
At the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the Cyclones put up strong performances against an elite field. Freshman sensation Kate Hall had a couple of strong performances on the day, finishing 10th in the 60-meter dash in 7.37 and taking sixth in the invitational long jump with a best leap of 20-10. Her teammate Jhoanmy Luque took ninth in the invitational long jump at 20-5.
